Barcelona has a large foreign-born community. Pakistani families in the Raval, Filipino workers in hotels and homes, Indian engineers in tech offices around 22@, Bangladeshi shopkeepers and Nigerian students all apply for visas from here. Most of them share one advantage and one trap. The advantage: a valid Spanish residence card already opens most of Europe. The trap: the countries that still want a visa from you (the UK, the US, Canada) process applications in Madrid or online, and each treats flight bookings differently. This guide sorts that out city by city, quoting the official pages. We are an online service; there is no DummyTicketPrice desk in Barcelona.

Do you need a flight booking to visit Paris or Rome from Barcelona?
Usually not, because you need no visa at all. The EU's Your Europe portal lists the Schengen entry conditions and notes that the visa is required "if needed, except if you hold a valid residence permit".[6] In plain terms, a Pakistani or Indian national with a valid Spanish TIE and passport can take the train to Paris or fly to Rome for a short stay without applying anywhere. The same page says a Schengen residence permit also works for Cyprus, which applies its own visa rules.[6]
Two things still catch people. First, Ireland is outside Schengen, so your Spanish card does not get you into Dublin.[6] Second, the 90-days-in-180 limit still applies to time spent in other Schengen states. Border guards can ask for proof of your onward plans, and Your Europe mentions a "return or round-trip ticket" among the documents travellers may have to show on arrival.[6] For a residence-card holder that question is rare, but your real return booking should be on your phone.
Which visas do Barcelona residents still apply for?
The table below covers the applications we see most from Catalonia. It compares what each authority actually writes about travel plans and what we would do in your place.
| Destination | Where a Barcelona resident applies | What the official page says about flights | Our suggestion |
|---|---|---|---|
| United States | US Embassy Madrid; no visa work in Barcelona[1] | Don't buy tickets until the visa is issued[3] | Nothing required; a reservation is optional |
| United Kingdom | Online with UKVI, biometrics in Spain[5] | "flight bookings (unless transiting)" listed as less useful[4] | Usually leave it out |
| UK transit | Same process[4] | Outward journey "confirmed and is within 48 hours of arrival"[4] | Show the onward booking clearly |
| Canada | Online, biometrics at the VFS centre in Madrid[11] | Follow your IRCC document list | A reservation if the list asks for travel plans |
| Schengen countries | No application with a valid TIE[6] | Not applicable | Carry your real return booking |

Where do Barcelona residents interview for a US visa?
In Madrid. The US Consulate General in Barcelona states that "All U.S. visa services in Spain and Andorra are provided at the U.S. Embassy in Madrid."[1] So a visitor visa from Barcelona means a trip to the capital, usually by AVE train or a short flight, for the interview.
Can a non-Spaniard apply there? The embassy's visa page says applicants "should schedule their visa interview appointments at the U.S. Embassy or Consulate in their country of residence or nationality".[2] Living legally in Spain counts as residence, so bring your TIE to the interview along with your passport. The same page flags Presidential Proclamation 10998, under which visas for citizens of 39 countries are restricted, so look at the State Department's list if that could include you.[2]
As for flights, the State Department would rather you held your money back until the visa is printed.[3] The DS-160 asks for your intended dates, not a booking. Our honest view: skip the $9 reservation for this interview unless a defined itinerary genuinely helps you explain a short visit, for example a parent going for a graduation.
What does a UK visitor visa from Spain need instead of flights?
Proof that you live here legally, mainly. GOV.UK's supporting-documents guide asks for "confirmation of legal residence, if you are not a national of the country in which you are applying".[4] For most Barcelona expats that means a clear copy of both sides of the TIE, plus something that shows your Barcelona address, such as a padrón certificate or rental contract.
The same guide places "flight bookings (unless transiting)" on its list of documents that are less useful as evidence, next to hotel bookings and travel insurance.[4] A reservation will not hurt a visitor application, but it will not help it either, and we would rather you spent the effort on payslips, your contract and bank statements.
The exception is the Visitor in Transit route. There, the guide wants evidence that your outward journey from the UK "has been confirmed and is within 48 hours of arrival".[4] If you are, say, a Filipino resident flying Barcelona–London–Manila on separate bookings, the onward sector is the heart of that file. Note the word "confirmed": a held reservation may not be enough for a transit case, and a paid onward ticket is the safer choice.
Where do you give biometrics? GOV.UK's "Find a visa application centre" tool lists the current centres in Spain once you choose your country.[5] Reports of a premium centre in Barcelona have circulated; no official page we could load in October 2026 confirmed it, so trust the tool over word of mouth.
Travelling while your TIE is being renewed
This is where Barcelona residents most often need a flight plan in writing, and it has nothing to do with embassies.
If your residence card has expired and the renewal is still pending, the Policía Nacional can issue an autorización de regreso. Its official page describes it as a document that lets you leave Spain and come back within 90 days, for people whose residence authorisation is being renewed or extended.[7] It is also available if your valid TIE is stolen, lost or damaged and you have applied for a duplicate.[7] You apply in person at an Oficina de Extranjería or police station using form EX-13 and the fee form 790, code 012.[7] If the trip is urgent, the page says it is processed with priority.[7]
Now the detail that matters for your route. The police page states that the return authorisation is valid only for entry through Spanish border crossings.[7] That changes how you should book. Coming back from Lahore through Doha or Dubai straight into El Prat is fine. Coming back through Frankfurt or Paris means your Schengen entry happens in Germany or France, and the document is not designed for that. When we hold a reservation for someone travelling on a return authorisation, we suggest the final sector lands in Spain.
The official page does not list a flight booking among the required documents.[7] Still, many people like to show the date of their trip when asking for priority. If your local office asks for travel details, a reservation lets you show dates without buying a non-refundable fare while the outcome is uncertain.
Which flights from El Prat suit a visa reservation?
Pick a route a Barcelona resident would really fly. A few published by the airlines themselves:
- Dubai: Emirates says it runs 21 flights a week between Barcelona and Dubai.[9] That hub connects onward to Pakistan, India, Bangladesh and the Philippines.
- Singapore: Singapore Airlines says it operates a nonstop Barcelona–Singapore flight, plus a one-stop service through Milan Malpensa.[10] Useful for Manila or Australia itineraries.
- London: many carriers fly BCN to London airports. For a UK file the exact airline matters less than dates that match your form.
There are no nonstop flights from Barcelona to Karachi, Lagos or Manila that we could confirm on airline pages, so a one-stop routing is normal and nobody will query it. El Prat has two terminals, T1 and T2, with a free shuttle between them, according to Aena.[8] Your reservation PDF shows the terminal when the airline publishes it.

Example: a Raval family visiting cousins in Birmingham
Picture a Pakistani couple living in the Raval with two children, all holding Spanish residence cards, planning ten days with relatives in Birmingham over Easter. They need UK visitor visas.
They apply online, then book biometrics at the centre GOV.UK's finder shows for Spain.[5] Their strongest documents are the TIE copies, the father's work contract and nóminas, six months of bank statements, the children's school letter and an invitation from the cousins with a copy of their British passports. A flight booking adds little, since GOV.UK calls it less useful.[4] If they want the application form's dates to look concrete, a reservation ordered a few days before biometrics, with all four names, is enough. They buy real seats only once the visas arrive.
Example: a renewal pending and a wedding in Manila
Imagine a Filipino carer in Gràcia whose TIE expired in August. She applied to renew on time but has no decision, and her sister's wedding in Manila is on 20 November.
She asks the Oficina de Extranjería for a return authorisation, explaining the urgency so it is treated with priority.[7] To show her travel dates without committing money, she orders a reservation: Barcelona–Dubai–Manila out, Manila–Dubai–Barcelona back. The return lands at El Prat, not in another Schengen country, which fits the rule about Spanish border crossings.[7] Once the authorisation is granted, she buys the actual ticket for dates inside its 90-day window. That is how we would advise anyone in her position.
How to order from Barcelona
- Check which authority decides using the table above. If it is a Schengen trip, you probably need nothing.
- Read the latest checklist for your category and see how it phrases the travel item.
- Fill in route, dates and names on our booking page. Copy names exactly from each passport, not from the TIE, if the spellings differ.
- Settle $9 for each person with a card at the Razorpay checkout.
- Watch your inbox for about 10 minutes, including the spam folder.
- Look the PNR up on the airline's website with your surname. Our guide on verifying a reservation shows how.
Our tracking page shows where an order stands, and the price page converts the fee into other currencies.
How close to the appointment should you book?
A few days before, not weeks. Your PNR remains live for up to 2 weeks at most; the exact cut-off is each airline's call, and some fares end sooner. With a Madrid interview fixed for a Thursday, Monday of that week is when we would place the order. If the slot moves, a new hold matched to the revised date is safer than trusting the old PNR.
Mistakes we see from Barcelona applicants
- Filing a Schengen application for no reason. A valid TIE and passport already cover short stays.
- Routing a return-authorisation trip through another Schengen airport. The document is for entry at Spanish crossings.
- Calling a reservation a ticket. On any form, describe it as a reservation.
- Using a name spelt as on the TIE when the passport differs. Airlines go by the passport.
- Edited PDFs or "free generator" bookings. If the airline's site cannot find it, the document works against you.
Barcelona FAQ
Do I need a visa for France or Italy if I live in Barcelona?
Not for a short stay if your Spanish residence permit and passport are valid. The EU's Your Europe portal says the visa requirement does not apply to holders of a valid residence permit. The 90-days-in-180 rule still limits time spent in other Schengen countries, and Ireland is outside Schengen, so Dublin needs its own check.
Can I get a US visa interview in Barcelona?
No. The US Consulate General in Barcelona says all US visa services in Spain and Andorra are provided at the embassy in Madrid. You apply online, pay the fee and travel to Madrid for the interview. Since the State Department says to hold back on tickets until a visa is granted, no booking is needed for the interview.
Will a flight reservation help my UK visitor application?
It is optional and not much use. GOV.UK lists flight bookings, except for transit cases, among documents that are less useful as evidence. Put your energy into proof of legal residence in Spain, employment, funds and ties. For a transit visa it is different: the guide wants proof that you leave the UK within 48 hours on a confirmed booking.
What is an autorización de regreso and when do I need one?
It is a Policía Nacional document for foreigners whose residence permit is in renewal or extension, or whose valid TIE was lost or stolen with a duplicate requested. It lets you leave Spain and return within 90 days. You apply in person with form EX-13 and fee 790 code 012. It is only valid for entry through Spanish border crossings.
Is there a DummyTicketPrice office in Barcelona?
No. We work only online. Barcelona customers order through the website and settle the $9 fee for each traveller with a card at the Razorpay checkout. The PDF lands in your inbox, typically ten minutes later, ready to print at any copy shop. For help, our WhatsApp line and support email sit in the footer of every page.
Can I board a flight at El Prat with this reservation?
No. The PNR is genuine, yet nobody has paid the fare, which means check-in staff at El Prat will turn it away. When your visa or return authorisation is granted, buy the actual ticket for dates that match. Many people buy on the same route they reserved, though you are free to choose another airline.
How long will my reservation stay live?
A fortnight at the outside, with each carrier deciding its own limit; some drop earlier. Our advice is to order a few days ahead of the Madrid interview or the Oficina de Extranjería visit. If the date slips, order a new reservation nearer the new day so the PNR is still live when someone checks it.
Order your Barcelona reservation
No office, no queue: $9 a head, and you can check it on the carrier's website.
Please note: a reservation supports a plan; it does not decide anything. Describe it accurately, keep dates consistent across your papers, and accept that the embassy, the police or the airline makes the call.
