Adelaide's migrant community has grown fast. Students at Adelaide, Flinders and UniSA, nurses at the big hospitals, tradespeople on regional skilled visas, and families from India, Nepal, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Nigeria now apply for overseas visas from South Australia every week. Their biggest practical question is often not "what document?" but "do I have to fly to Melbourne for this?" Some visas can be lodged in Adelaide; several cannot. Below we set out which is which, quote what each authority writes about flights, and explain how we would plan the bookings. We work online and have no office in Adelaide.

What does the Italian consulate in Adelaide ask for?
Adelaide is lucky to have a working Italian consulate, not just an honorary office. The consulate says it is "competent to receive visa applications exclusively from people residing in South Australia" and that visas are lodged only by appointment at 3/215 Port Road, Hindmarsh.[3] Italy's consular network page confirms its jurisdiction is South Australia.[5]
Its tourism checklist, updated in August 2026, is unusually specific about flights. Item A.5 reads: "Reservation of return or round ticket (from Adelaide into Schengen area and back), with proof of transport showing entry to/exit from Italy. Please include detailed itinerary of the whole trip".[4]
Three things follow from that wording:
- It says reservation. A held booking with a live PNR is the kind of document the line describes.
- The route should start and end in Adelaide. A Melbourne departure would contradict "from Adelaide", unless you genuinely plan to start there and explain it.
- Italy must be visible. If you fly into Paris and take a train to Milan, include the train or flight that shows your entry to and exit from Italy in the itinerary.
The same checklist asks for "Proof of residence" (A.2) and "Proof of Australian visa status – current VEVO" (A.4), plus a hotel reservation or invitation, three months of bank statements and travel insurance of at least €30,000.[4] Bring originals and copies, and book the slot early, because appointments are limited to set hours each week.[3]
Which visas send South Australians interstate?
This table answers the question we get most often from Adelaide.
| Destination | Can you lodge in Adelaide? | What the official page says about flights | Our suggestion |
|---|---|---|---|
| Italy | Yes, Hindmarsh consulate[3] | "Reservation of return or round ticket (from Adelaide into Schengen area and back)"[4] | Held reservation from ADL |
| Germany | Via VFS or the Austrian Embassy; check VFS for the nearest centre[6] | "reservation OR booking; presentation of a paid ticket is not required"[8] | Held reservation |
| Netherlands | No: Melbourne, Perth or Sydney[9] | "You do not need a paid travel ticket"[10] | Held reservation |
| United States | No: Melbourne, Perth or Sydney[1] | Buy flights only after the visa is granted[2] | Not needed for the interview |
| United Kingdom | Online, then biometrics at the centre UKVI offers | "flight bookings (unless transiting)" less useful[11] | Usually leave out |

German visas: Austria, VFS and the honorary consul
There is a German honorary consul in Adelaide, on Pirie Street, and people naturally assume they can drop a visa file there.[7] They cannot. German missions state that honorary consuls in Australia "cannot accept any visa applications or give any information on visa issues".[6]
Instead, "The Austrian Embassy in Canberra is responsible for issuing Schengen Visas on behalf of Germany in all States and Territories of Australia", with files handed in by the applicant at VFS Global or the embassy in Canberra.[6] You must also have been legally resident in Australia for over 6 months.[6] The Austrian Embassy's list then asks for "Proof of the means of transport (reservation OR booking; presentation of a paid ticket is not required)".[8] Its timing rule: lodge within the six months before departure and at least 15 calendar days ahead.[8]
We could not confirm on an official page we could open whether VFS currently has an Austria-Germany counter in Adelaide. Check the VFS booking site when you start. If the nearest centre is interstate, your reservation should still start from Adelaide, because that is where you live and will fly from.
Dutch visas mean a trip east or west
Netherlands Worldwide says that to apply for a Schengen visa in Australia you "go to the VFS Global application centre in Melbourne, Perth or Sydney".[9] There is no Adelaide option on that page. You can apply up to six months before your trip.[9]
The Dutch tourism checklist is relaxed about flights: it wants "a reservation in your name for your travel to and from the Schengen area", and says "You do not need a paid travel ticket".[10] Our practical tip for South Australians: book the interstate appointment first, then order the reservation about three days before you fly to Melbourne or Sydney for it. Keep the domestic hop off the reservation; it is your own travel, not part of the trip to Europe.
US visitor visas from Adelaide
According to the US Embassy, only its Melbourne, Perth and Sydney consulates provide consular services in Australia, and Canberra handles no visa applications.[1] There is no US visa post in Adelaide, so most South Australians fly to Melbourne for the interview. Its notice tells people to interview in the country where they reside or hold citizenship, and warns that visa issuance is curtailed for citizens of 39 countries under Presidential Proclamation 10998.[1]
For the interview itself, skip the international reservation. Washington's guidance is to leave tickets until the visa is granted.[2] Spend the money on a flexible domestic fare to Melbourne instead, because interview dates sometimes move.
UK visas from South Australia
The GOV.UK supporting-documents guide treats flights as weak evidence for visitors, listing "flight bookings (unless transiting)" with other less useful items.[11] It does want "confirmation of legal residence, if you are not a national of the country in which you are applying", which for most Adelaide expats is a VEVO printout and visa grant notice.[11] If you are transiting through London and need a transit visa, the guide expects an onward journey "confirmed and is within 48 hours of arrival".[11] For that case we would recommend a paid onward ticket rather than a hold.
Routes from Adelaide Airport that fit a visa itinerary
Adelaide Airport's airline contacts page lists, among others, Cathay Pacific, China Southern, Emirates, Malaysia Airlines, Qatar Airways and Singapore Airlines.[12] Two routes the airlines describe themselves:
- Dubai: Emirates says it operates 7 flights a week between Adelaide and Dubai,[13] which connects to Rome, Milan, Frankfurt and Amsterdam.
- Singapore: Singapore Airlines says it flies nonstop from Adelaide to Singapore.[14] From there its network reaches most European capitals.
A one-stop itinerary from ADL to Europe is what consulates expect to see. Make sure each sector has the dates that match your hotel bookings and insurance.

Example: a Glenelg couple heading to Sicily
Imagine a Filipino couple in Glenelg, both permanent residents, planning three weeks in Sicily and Rome in May. They live in South Australia, so their file goes to the Italian consulate in Hindmarsh.[3]
They book the earliest appointment they can, so a decision has time to arrive before May. Four days before it, they order one reservation for both names: Adelaide–Singapore–Rome out, Catania–Rome–Singapore–Adelaide back, which shows entry to and exit from Italy exactly as item A.5 asks.[4] VEVO printouts, a council rates notice for proof of residence, and hotel bookings complete the travel part. They buy the actual tickets after the visas come through, keeping the same dates.
Example: an Indian nurse and a Dutch conference
Now picture an Indian nurse in Mawson Lakes invited to a conference in Rotterdam. The Netherlands is her main destination, so she cannot lodge in Adelaide; she books VFS in Melbourne.[9]
She takes a domestic flight for the appointment and orders a reservation Adelaide–Dubai–Amsterdam and back three days before it. The Dutch list says a reservation in her name is enough and no paid ticket is needed.[10] If her appointment is postponed, she orders a fresh reservation; she does not reuse an old PNR that may have lapsed.
How to order from Adelaide
- Identify the deciding authority and whether you can lodge in Adelaide or must go interstate.
- Read its checklist and note any routing it expects, such as "from Adelaide".
- Enter the trip on our booking page, starting from ADL, with names exactly as in each passport.
- Pay $9 per passenger with a debit or credit card through Razorpay.
- Expect our email in about 10 minutes; look in junk mail if not.
- Look the PNR up on the airline's site. Here is how to verify a reservation.
The tracking page shows order status, and the price page lists other currencies.
How long does it stay valid?
For as long as 2 weeks, though each carrier picks its own limit and some let go earlier. If the consulate takes longer than a fortnight to decide, the hold may lapse before the result. That is expected for a reservation. Order it close to your appointment, not when you first book the slot.
What to avoid in Adelaide
- Taking a visa file to the German honorary consul. They cannot accept it.
- Starting the reservation in Melbourne just because the appointment is there.
- Leaving Italy off the itinerary when you enter Schengen elsewhere.
- Booking an Adelaide slot for a Dutch visa. Only Melbourne, Perth or Sydney are listed.
- Calling the reservation a paid ticket, or submitting an edited PDF.
Adelaide FAQ
Can I apply for an Italian visa in Adelaide?
Yes, if you live in South Australia. The Consulate of Italy in Adelaide accepts visa applications only from South Australian residents, by appointment, at 3/215 Port Road, Hindmarsh. Its tourism checklist asks for a reservation of a return or round ticket from Adelaide into the Schengen area and back, with proof of entry to and exit from Italy.
Do I have to go to Melbourne for a US visa interview?
You have to go to one of the three US consulates that handle visas in Australia: Melbourne, Perth or Sydney. There is no US visa post in Adelaide, and the Canberra embassy does not process visas. Leave the international booking out; US guidance is to settle the visa before any ticket.
Can the German honorary consul in Adelaide take my Schengen application?
No. German missions say honorary consuls in Australia cannot accept visa applications or give visa information. German Schengen visas for Australian residents are issued by the Austrian Embassy in Canberra, with applications handed over in person to VFS Global or the Austrian Embassy once you have lived here legally for over 6 months.
Where do South Australians apply for a Dutch visa?
At a VFS Global centre in Melbourne, Perth or Sydney; Netherlands Worldwide lists no Adelaide centre. On flights, the Dutch list is easy-going: a reservation under your name for the trip to Europe and back is enough, and nothing has to be paid. Book the interstate appointment first, then the reservation.
Is there a DummyTicketPrice office in Adelaide?
No. We have no premises in South Australia and serve everyone online. Complete the form, pay $9 a passenger with any major card, and the reservation is emailed to you, normally inside 10 minutes. You can print it anywhere before your consulate or VFS appointment.
Can I fly from ADL on this reservation?
No. A reservation holds a seat under a real PNR without payment, so you cannot check in with it. Once the visa is granted, pay for a real fare on matching dates. Many people choose the same airline, but you do not have to.
Should my reservation start in Adelaide if my appointment is interstate?
Yes, in most cases. Your trip to Europe will start from Adelaide, and the Italian checklist even spells out "from Adelaide". The domestic flight to an appointment in Melbourne or Sydney is separate personal travel and does not belong on the itinerary you submit.

$9 per traveller, ordered from your couch, checkable on the airline's website.
Please note: the consulate decides on the whole file, and no flight document changes that. Call it a reservation, keep every date consistent, and follow your checklist where it differs from general advice.
