Paris is home to a huge number of foreign residents: Indian and Chinese engineers in La Défense, Moroccan, Algerian and Senegalese families across Seine-Saint-Denis, Filipino carers in the western suburbs, Pakistani and Bangladeshi shopkeepers around Gare du Nord, and students at every university in the Île-de-France. Many of them search for a dummy ticket before a trip and then find they do not need one. Others need one and do not realise it. This guide sorts out which is which for people holding a French residence permit. We work online only and have no office in Paris.

| UK visit visa | Apply online; enrol biometrics at a UK visa centre listed by GOV.UK[4] |
| US visa | Interview at the US Embassy, 4 avenue Gabriel[5] |
| Canada visa | VFS Global centres in Paris (rue d'Hauteville) and Lyon[7] |
| Our fee | $9 per passenger; card payment online |
Do you need anything to visit Spain, Italy or Germany?
Not a visa. Service-public.fr is clear that a foreigner with a residence permit from a Schengen state can cross into other member countries on presentation of a valid passport and that permit.[1] So a Senegalese engineer in Boulogne heading to Barcelona for a weekend needs no Spanish visa and no flight reservation for a consulate. What matters is that the titre de séjour is in date and the passport is valid.
The Entry/Exit System, fully live since 10 April 2026, does not register people holding long-stay visas or residence permits.[2] You show your passport and permit as before.
Two practical cautions from experience. First, keep these trips short; the residence permit lets you visit, it does not let you move to another Schengen country. Second, if all you hold is a receipt for a pending renewal, ask your préfecture before you book anything. We have not found an official page we could confirm on travel with a récépissé, so we will not guess.
New arrivals on a long-stay visa
Students and workers in their first year often hold a long-stay visa rather than a card. Service-public.fr says a French long-stay visa also lets you travel through the Schengen area without any other visa, as long as you do not exceed 90 days during its validity.[10] So a Nigerian master's student at Sciences Po who arrived in September can visit friends in Brussels at Toussaint without applying for anything.
Count your days if you travel a lot in that first year. Ninety days sounds generous until a student spends every holiday abroad. And if the long-stay visa is close to expiry while the residence card is still being processed, treat it like the récépissé case above: ask the préfecture before you leave France, because we could not confirm the rule for that gap on an official page.
Where Paris residents really need a reservation
The need appears when you leave the Schengen area, or when you visit a country that checks onward travel at the airport. The table sums up the common cases.
| Trip from Paris | Official position on flights | Our view |
|---|---|---|
| United Kingdom (visa nationals) | Home Office guide files "Flight bookings (unless transiting)" under weaker evidence[3] | Usually skip it; focus on money and ties |
| United States | State Department: don't "buy tickets until you have a visa"[6] | Optional at most |
| Canada | IRCC suggests itinerary documents that can include flight details[8] | A reservation is a good fit |
| Schengen country | No visa with a French titre de séjour[1] | Nothing to order |
| Visa-free or arrival-visa destinations | Airlines may check onward or return travel at check-in | See our onward travel list |
Applying for a Canadian visitor visa from Paris?
A CDG hold showing your dates costs $9 per person and is emailed within minutes.
The UK from Paris: is a booking worth it?
Rarely. The UK has never been part of Schengen, and a French titre de séjour does not get a Moroccan, Indian or Algerian national across the Channel. You apply online for a Standard Visitor visa and then attend a visa centre for biometrics; GOV.UK's finder shows which centres in France take UK applications.[4]
On flights, GOV.UK is unusually frank: its guide places flight bookings among documents that are not useful, unless you are transiting.[3] Many Paris residents go by Eurostar anyway. We would put that effort into payslips, your residence permit, an employer's letter and bank statements. If you want something to show dates on the form, a reservation will not hurt, but it is not what decides a UK visit visa.
The US from Paris
The US Embassy's consular section in Paris handles non-immigrant visas; most applicants, including many children and older people, are interviewed in person at 4 avenue Gabriel.[5] French citizens use the Visa Waiver Program, but residents of other nationalities usually need a B1/B2 visa.
The State Department's line is simple: no tickets before the visa.[6] The DS-160 asks for intended dates, not a booking. Some applicants still bring a reservation to show a planned trip, which is fine as long as it is described as a reservation. We would not insist on it.
Canada from Paris: where a reservation earns its keep
Canada is the destination where Paris residents most sensibly use a held booking. VFS Global runs the Canada Visa Application Centre in France, with an address on rue d'Hauteville in the 10th arrondissement and another centre in Lyon, and appointments are required for biometrics.[7]
IRCC's supporting-documents guidance describes itinerary evidence that can include flight details, alongside accommodation or event registrations.[8] Buying a non-refundable fare to Montréal before a decision is a gamble; a reservation shows the plan without the risk. Our Canada visa guide goes deeper.
Routes from CDG that read well on a reservation
The itinerary should look like a trip someone in Paris would book. Air France publishes nonstop Paris–Delhi, Paris–Mumbai and Paris–Bengaluru services.[9] That matters for Indian residents planning a family visit home on the way to somewhere else. For Canada, a return from CDG to Montréal or Toronto is the obvious choice.

Orly works just as well when it is your genuine departure point. Aim for consistency: departure airport, home address and what you tell the officer ought to tell one story.
Example: an Indian engineer in Courbevoie visiting Toronto
Say Rahul, an Indian national on a French multi-year residence card, works in La Défense and lives in Courbevoie. His sister lives in Toronto and he wants ten days there in May. He applies online to IRCC and books biometrics at the Paris VAC.[7]
He uploads a letter from his employer, recent payslips, his titre de séjour and passport, his sister's invitation, and a reservation CDG–Toronto–CDG ordered the week he submits. The reservation shows his intended dates without committing several hundred euros. If the visa comes through, he buys a real ticket, perhaps on the same flights, perhaps not.
Two small details make his file tidier. His covering letter says the flight document is a reservation, in those words. And the dates on the reservation match the dates in his sister's invitation and in his leave approval from work, so the officer never has to work out which version of the trip is real. If IRCC takes longer than expected and his dates slip, he replaces the booking with one for the revised dates instead of defending a stale printout.
Example: a Moroccan family in Saint-Denis going to London
Now take a Moroccan couple with two children living in Saint-Denis, all on French residence permits, who want a week in London at Easter. They need UK visitor visas. Here we would tell them honestly that GOV.UK does not value flight bookings for this purpose.[3] They should spend their time on a solid covering letter, bank statements, the children's school letters and evidence of their jobs. Eurostar tickets bought after the visa are the natural way to travel. Our Moroccan travellers guide covers trips where a reservation does help.
Holidays from Paris where the airline checks onward travel
Not every reservation is for a consulate. Some Paris residents fly one way to Asia or Latin America, planning to decide the return later, and meet a check-in agent at CDG who asks how they will leave the destination. Airlines ask because they usually have to fly a refused passenger back. Our check-in versus immigration guide explains who checks what.
Rules vary by country and change often, so we keep them in separate guides rather than repeat them here: Thailand, Indonesia and Bali, the Philippines and New Zealand. Some destinations accept a held booking as evidence of plans, while others say onward travel must be paid. Read the guide for your destination before you rely on a reservation at the airport.
A tip from the desk: if you are travelling one way on purpose, say so to the agent, and show your residence permit too. It explains why you will be coming back to France at some point, which is often the real question behind the request.
What to take to a VAC or embassy appointment in Paris
Whatever the destination, Paris residents should bring four things that prove where they live and why they will return.
- Your titre de séjour and a photocopy, checking the expiry date against your trip.
- Proof of address in Paris, such as a recent electricity bill or rental contract.
- Work or study evidence: an attestation employeur, payslips, or a certificat de scolarité.
- The reservation printout, if you are using one, with every traveller's name visible.
The night before, retrieve the booking on the airline's site once more. A changed schedule or released hold is easier to fix at home than at the counter.
How to order from Paris
- Decide whether you need it at all using the sections above.
- Fill in the booking form with CDG or ORY, your destination and dates.
- Type every name exactly as on the passport, not as on the titre de séjour if they differ.
- Pay $9 per traveller by card via Razorpay; the fee table lists every currency.
- Read the PDF when it arrives, usually within 10 minutes.
- Find the booking yourself on the carrier's website, as described in checking a reservation before you submit it.
If anything is delayed, track the order or message us on WhatsApp.
When to book it
Validity is capped at 2 weeks, and the carrier picks the exact end date. For Canada, we would order it the day you upload your application or the day before your VAC appointment. For anything else, book it in the final days before you submit. If a decision drags on and someone asks for an updated itinerary, order a fresh one rather than resending a lapsed booking.
Mistakes Paris residents make
- Buying a reservation for a Schengen trip that needs no visa at all.
- Travelling on an expired titre de séjour because the new card has not arrived.
- Presenting a reservation as a ticket to a US or UK officer.
- Names spelt the French way on the booking but differently in the passport.
- Buying non-refundable fares before a Canadian or US decision.
Paris FAQ
I live in Paris with a titre de séjour. Do I need a visa for Italy?
No visa is needed for a short visit. Service-public.fr says holders of a residence permit issued by a Schengen state may enter other member countries with a valid passport and that permit. You will not need a flight reservation for a consulate either, because there is no application. Carry both documents when you travel.
Will a UK visitor application from France need flights?
Usually not. Britain's own evidence guide gives flight bookings little weight unless you are merely changing planes. Concentrate on proof of income, savings, your French residence status and your reasons to come back. You can add a reservation if it helps explain dates, but it will not carry the application.
Does a hold help an IRCC visitor application filed in France?
Yes, it is one of the better uses. IRCC describes itinerary documents that can include flight details. A held booking from CDG shows your planned dates without buying a fare before a decision. Fingerprints and photo are done by appointment at VFS in Paris or Lyon.
Can I pay in euros?
Our checkout shows $9 per passenger, and your card issuer converts it to euros at its own rate. Payment runs through Razorpay and accepts most international debit and credit cards. Singles and returns share one price, while longer multi-stop routes are charged per two sectors.
Is there a DummyTicketPrice office in Paris?
No. We are an online service without a counter in France or anywhere else. Orders are placed on the site and the PDF is emailed, typically inside ten minutes. If something looks wrong, reply to the email or message our WhatsApp support.
Can I check in at CDG with the reservation?
No. Nobody has paid for that seat, so although the PNR is genuine, no boarding pass can come from it. Once you have the visa, or once you are sure of your plans, buy an actual ticket. You do not have to use the same flights.
How long does the reservation stay valid?
At most 2 weeks, and the carrier chooses the precise span. Book near your submission or appointment date; reorder if plans slide.
Need a reservation from Paris?
One flat dollar price, a real airline PNR, no visit to any office.
Please note: officers and airlines decide; a held seat never does. Present ours honestly, and where a destination's own list wants something stronger, provide that.
