Countries That Require Proof of Onward Travel (2026): Checked Against Official Sources

Many do. Official sources name a return or onward ticket as an entry condition for visitors to the Philippines, Thailand, Indonesia, New Zealand, Costa Rica, Fiji, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, Mauritius, Seychelles, Kenya, South Africa, Panama and the US Visa Waiver Program, among others. Some want a paid or confirmed ticket. Airlines usually enforce it at check-in.

Lists of "onward ticket countries" are everywhere online, and most of them are copied from each other with no sources. We wanted something you could actually check. So every row in the table below links to a government page: an immigration department, a foreign ministry or embassy, an official tourism board, or another government's travel advice. Where we couldn't find an official source, the row says so, in red, rather than guessing.

We've also recorded how strongly each country words its rule, because that's what decides whether a cheap reservation is enough or whether you need to buy a ticket. "May ask for a return ticket" and "onward tickets must be paid for" are very different instructions.

Which countries require proof of onward travel?

The three South-East Asian destinations we cover in detailed guides come first. "Strength" is our label for the official wording: Paid (must be paid or pre-purchased), Confirmed (the word "confirmed" appears), Ticket (a ticket is required, status not specified), and May ask (officers can request one). Paraphrased from the official sources listed at the end. Last checked: October 2026. Rules depend on nationality and entry route; airlines may apply stricter policies.

Two things to keep in mind when reading it. First, the rule usually applies to visa-free or visa-on-arrival visitors. If you're applying for a visa in advance, the consulate's checklist takes over, and that checklist may ask for a flight reservation rather than a paid ticket. Our flight reservation requirements by country page covers that visa-application side. Second, a country not appearing here doesn't mean nobody will ask. Your airline can.

How strict is each country's wording?

This is the part most lists skip, and it's the part that decides what you should actually carry.

Wording strengthCountriesWhat we'd carry
Paid or pre-purchasedNew Zealand, Costa Rica; Thailand for visa on arrivalA paid ticket. A refundable fare if your plans may change. A reservation will not meet this wording.
ConfirmedMaldives, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Thailand (Bern embassy)A paid ticket is safest. A verifiable reservation is a confirmed booking, not a paid one; the airline and officer decide whether it's enough.
Ticket, status not statedPhilippines, Indonesia, Fiji, Singapore, Mauritius, Seychelles, Tanzania, Kenya, South Africa, US VWP, Panama, Peru, CambodiaA paid ticket fully meets it. A verifiable reservation often answers the check-in question, but it isn't a ticket.
May askColombia, BrazilSomething showing your exit, because you might be asked.
Our grouping of the official wording. Last checked: October 2026.

Our honest view is that the middle two rows are where people get caught out. The rule says "ticket", the traveller shows a reservation, and the outcome depends on the person behind the counter. Most of the time a verifiable booking out of the country is what the agent wants to see. Sometimes it isn't. If a refusal would wreck your trip, pay for something.

Who actually checks, and at which stage?

There are three different checkpoints, and they're often confused.

The visa stage only applies if you need a visa before travelling. The consulate looks at your itinerary as part of the application. That's a separate question from the onward-ticket rule, and many consulates are content with a reservation at that stage.

Airline check-in is where onward-ticket rules mostly bite. Agents look up your passport and destination in Timatic, which IATA describes as real-time information on travel-document requirements, used by airlines, ground handlers and government officials.[25] If Timatic shows a return or onward requirement, the agent asks to see it. Airlines take this seriously because a passenger refused entry usually has to be flown back by the carrier that brought them, and the carrier can be penalised.

Immigration on arrival has the final say on entry. Officers ask less often than airlines do, but when they ask, they tend to ask about everything at once: accommodation, money, how long you're staying, and how you're leaving.

What happens if you're refused boarding?

You don't get a boarding pass for that flight until you show something the airline accepts. That's it. There's no appeal at the desk, and fare rules usually put a documents-related missed flight on you.

Say you're flying from London to Auckland on a one-way fare, planning to travel on to Australia by some route you haven't chosen yet. New Zealand's wording is "paid". If you turn up with an unpaid reservation, you should expect to be told to buy a ticket before you can board. That's not the airline being awkward. It's the rule.

Does a bus, train or ferry ticket count?

Only a handful of official sources address this directly:

  • Costa Rica names a pre-purchased bus ticket and proof of cruise passage, as well as flights.[5]
  • Thailand: the Swiss-based Thai embassy accepts confirmed rail, road or sea tickets as well as air.[2]
  • South Africa's wording refers to a return air ticket.[15]
  • The US Visa Waiver Program doesn't require a round-trip ticket at land borders, only for air and sea arrivals.[14]

Everywhere else, the rules say "ticket" without naming a mode, and we couldn't find official confirmation either way. Realistically, airline staff want to see a flight. If you plan to leave overland or by sea, carry that ticket, and be ready with a flight booking in case the agent insists.

How many days ahead must the onward ticket be?

Few countries publish a number, but the logic is the same everywhere: the exit date must fall within the stay you're allowed. The explicit figures we found are:

  • Thailand: within 30 days of arrival for the visa exemption; within 15 days for visa on arrival.[1]
  • Philippines: within 30 days for most visa-free visitors; 14 days for Indian nationals without a qualifying visa.[3]
  • Costa Rica: a return dated more than 90 days after arrival isn't accepted.[5]
  • Seychelles: the ticket must cover the duration of the visit.[16]

For everywhere else, check your nationality's permitted stay and pick a date comfortably inside it. A booking dated the day after your permission expires is the one detail a check-in agent will spot immediately.

Where a flight reservation fits, and where it doesn't

We sell flight reservations, so you might expect us to say they work everywhere. They don't, and pretending otherwise would cost you a flight.

A reservation from us is a real booking held in an airline's system under a PNR in your name. The PNR is searchable on the carrier's website by anyone holding it and your surname.

That suits situations where officials only need evidence of a planned departure. It is not a fit where the rule says paid or pre-purchased (New Zealand, Costa Rica, Thailand's visa on arrival), and it may not satisfy an agent or officer reading "ticket" or "confirmed" strictly. Ultimately the check-in agent rules on it. For certainty, consider these genuine alternatives:

  1. A cheap ticket out that you'd really use, such as a budget flight to a neighbouring country.
  2. A fully refundable fare, cancelled after arrival. Read the refund rules: some return a voucher, charge a fee or take weeks.
  3. A normal return ticket, if your dates are fixed.
  4. An airline's own paid hold, where a carrier offers one. It's still unpaid as a ticket until you buy it.

How to check a country that isn't on this list

  1. Find the government source. Search the immigration department or foreign ministry site of the country you're visiting, or your own government's travel advice page for it.
  2. Read the exact wording. Note whether it says "ticket", "confirmed", "paid" or "may be asked".
  3. Check your nationality's stay. The onward date must fall within it.
  4. Ask your airline. Its customer service can tell you what Timatic shows for your passport and route, and whether the airline has stricter rules of its own.
  5. Match the proof to the wording. Paid wording needs a paid ticket; otherwise choose from the options above.

Detailed guides for the most-asked countries

Three destinations generate most onward-ticket questions, so we've written each up in depth: Thailand under the new 30-day exemption, the Philippines, including India's 14-day rule, and Bali and the rest of Indonesia. For a short overview, see our onward ticket page, and for the broader background read the proof of onward travel guide.

Always be straight with officials. Call a reservation a reservation. Never alter a booking or present it as a paid ticket. No document guarantees entry; the officer at the border decides.

Onward travel by country: frequently asked questions

Which countries need an onward ticket?

Official sources we checked name a return or onward ticket for visitors to Thailand, the Philippines, Indonesia, New Zealand, Costa Rica, Fiji, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Singapore, Mauritius, Seychelles, Tanzania, Kenya, South Africa, Panama, Peru and the US Visa Waiver Program. Colombia and Brazil say officers may ask. Rules vary by nationality, so confirm with your airline.

Which countries require a paid onward ticket?

Of the official sources we checked, New Zealand says onward tickets must be paid for before travel, and Costa Rica asks for pre-purchased tickets. Thailand requires fully paid tickets for visa-on-arrival holders. In these cases a held reservation does not meet the wording; buy a ticket, ideally refundable if your plans might change.

Do airlines check onward tickets even if the country doesn't?

They can. Airlines check every passenger against IATA Timatic and may apply their own policies on top. Because a carrier usually has to fly a refused passenger back, agents tend to be cautious, especially on one-way fares. If you're unsure, contact the airline before your travel date and ask what it needs to see.

Does a return ticket have to go back to my home country?

Usually not. Most rules accept a ticket onwards to any third country, such as Manila to Singapore. A few are worded around your country of origin or residence: Mauritius refers to a return passage ticket, and Panama to a return to your country of origin or residence. Read the exact wording for your destination.

Can I use a bus or ferry ticket as proof of onward travel?

Costa Rica explicitly accepts pre-purchased bus tickets and cruise passage, and Thailand's embassy in Bern lists train, bus and boat tickets. South Africa refers to an air ticket. Elsewhere the rules don't specify, and airline agents often prefer a flight, so carry a flight booking as a backup if you're leaving overland.

Why do some rows say "Not confirmed"?

Because we couldn't open or find an official government page confirming a ticket rule for that country when we checked in October 2026. Rather than repeat claims from unofficial websites, we've marked those rows clearly. For Japan, Hong Kong, Australia and Vietnam, ask your airline what Timatic shows for your passport.

Is a flight reservation enough for proof of onward travel?

Sometimes. A reservation with a live PNR is a real, checkable booking, which answers many check-in requests. It isn't a paid ticket, so it won't meet rules worded "paid" or "pre-purchased", and an agent or officer reading "ticket" strictly may reject it. The airline decides at check-in.
