Manchester has something London lacks for many visa applicants: Schengen application centres within a tram ride, plus a Spanish consulate of its own. If you live in Greater Manchester, Lancashire, Merseyside, Yorkshire or the Midlands, you may never need to travel south for a European visa. This guide is written for people settled here on a UK visa or with settled status: nurses, doctors, students, engineers and families with Indian, Pakistani, Nigerian, Bangladeshi, Filipino or Chinese passports. British citizens can skip most of it, as Schengen states let them in visa-free for short stays.[1] We sell reservations online only; there is no Manchester office to drop into.

Can you apply from Manchester if you are not British?
Yes, provided you live in the UK lawfully. Germany's London mission limits applications to people who live here, and it explicitly includes "foreign residents" holding UK permission.[1] Italy and Spain take the same approach. What changes from one country to another is how long your UK permission must last after you come home.
| Country | Residence rule on the official page | Where a Manchester resident applies |
|---|---|---|
| Germany | Residence permit valid "at least one month after the end date of the trip"; bring a share code printout from UKVI[2] | TLScontact Manchester or London[2] |
| Italy | Residence cards or share code valid "at least three months beyond the last day" of the Schengen trip[4] | VFS Manchester or London (England and Wales)[4] |
| Spain | Residence permit valid "at least another 90 days beyond your return date"[6] | BLS Manchester, for the Manchester consulate[6] |
| France | Set by France-Visas for your profile | Any TLScontact centre in the UK[3] |
Physical BRP cards have gone. GOV.UK says all BRPs have now expired and been replaced by eVisas, and that you generate a share code to prove your status, which lasts 90 days.[10] Generate a fresh one shortly before your appointment so it has not lapsed when the officer looks at it. If your leave ends soon after your planned trip, sort out the extension first; a Schengen file built on a permit that runs out too early is a waste of the fee.
What do the checklists say about flights?
This is where Manchester applicants need to read carefully, because the four Schengen countries most people apply to say four different things.
- Germany (London mission): "Reserved return airline/ ferry/ train ticket." The page adds that a complete application does not guarantee a visa.[2]
- Italy (London consulate): the ticket "must be printed directly from the airline/trainline/bus operator showing passenger name, dates, from/to and price".[5]
- Spain (BLS Manchester): "tickets or email confirmation (reservation will not be accepted)" issued by the carrier.[6]
- France: France-Visas generates the document list for your situation; follow that list.[3]
So, plainly: for Germany, an airline hold carrying your name and a working PNR matches the word "reserved". For Spain, BLS says a reservation will not be accepted, so our product is the wrong tool and you should buy a refundable ticket from the airline. Italy asks for a printout from the airline that shows the price; a held booking may not show a fare in the way the consulate expects, so we would treat Italy like Spain and buy a refundable fare. We would rather lose the sale than see your appointment wasted.

Why Spain is different for the North West
Spain opened a Consulate General in Manchester, and its district covers Wales, the Isle of Man and a large slice of England: the North West except Cumbria, Yorkshire and the Humber, the East Midlands and the West Midlands.[7] If you live in Bolton, Leeds, Nottingham or Birmingham, your Spanish file goes there. BLS forwards Manchester applications to that consulate the next working morning.[6]
BLS also warns that a decision can take six to eight weeks from the day after submission, and longer in peak season.[6] That is far beyond the life of any held reservation, which is one more reason the Spanish checklist wants a real ticket. If you are going to Spain for summer, apply in spring and buy a fare you can cancel.
Italy: the Manchester centre is a satellite
Italy's consulate in London covers England, Wales, the Isle of Man, the Channel Islands and Gibraltar; Scotland goes to Edinburgh.[4] The Manchester VFS centre on Devonshire Street North takes biometrics and documents, then sends them to London. Allow a couple of extra working days for that hop.
Also note the residence rule: Italy wants your status valid three months beyond the end of the trip, which is stricter than Germany's one month.[2][4] A Pakistani student whose leave ends in late January cannot comfortably apply for a December trip to Rome. Check the dates before paying the visa fee.
What about a US visa from Manchester?
There is no US consulate in Manchester. Non-immigrant visas are handled at the Embassy in London or the Consulate General in Belfast, and if you are in the UK you may book at either post whatever your nationality.[8] Compare slot dates at both before you settle on London out of habit.
Flights play no formal part in the US interview. Washington's visitor guidance puts the ticket purchase after the visa, not before.[9] If you want something on paper to show your dates, a reservation does no harm, but it is optional and should be described honestly if asked.
Routes from Manchester that suit a reservation
Book something that matches how people from the North actually travel. Two long-haul examples from airline pages:
- Dubai: Emirates lists 21 flights a week between Manchester and Dubai.[11] Good for onward trips to South Asia or the Gulf.
- Singapore: Singapore Airlines runs a nonstop Manchester–Singapore service.[12]
For a Schengen trip, tell us the city you are visiting and we will hold whatever is bookable from MAN on your dates, direct where a direct flight exists and with one sensible stop where it does not. A simple there-and-back between Manchester and your main destination is the easiest itinerary for an officer to read.

Example: a nurse in Salford going to Berlin
Take Grace, a Nigerian nurse living in Salford on a Health and Care Worker visa that runs until 2028. She wants five days in Berlin in March to see a cousin. Germany is her only destination, so she applies to the German Embassy in London through TLScontact in Manchester.[2]
Her appointment is on 3 February. We would suggest she orders a reservation on 30 or 31 January, MAN–Berlin and back, her name exactly as printed in her passport. Her share code is generated the same week. Hotel or invitation letter, insurance and NHS leave approval show identical dates. Her permit easily clears Germany's one-month rule, and the reserved return matches the checklist wording. After the visa is issued she buys a real ticket, on that route or another.
Example: a family in Bradford going to Málaga
Now picture a Pakistani family of four in Bradford planning a fortnight on the Costa del Sol. West Yorkshire is in the Spanish Manchester district, so they apply at BLS Manchester.[6][7] The BLS page says a reservation will not be accepted, so we would tell them not to order one from us. A refundable return from the airline, bought in all four names, is the safer path, along with confirmed accommodation. Our Pakistani travellers guide covers their other trips.
Students, dependants and children
Manchester's universities draw students from all over the world, and plenty arrive with partners and children. Each family member needs a separate Schengen application, a separate residence check and a seat on the itinerary. Germany's rule about UK residence permits applies to every applicant, not just the main visa holder.[2]
Two things catch student families out. First, a student visa often ends a few months after the course, and Italy's three-month buffer or Spain's 90 days can rule out a trip near the end of the degree.[4][6] Second, each person's share code is separate; generate one for every adult and check the children's status too. On our side, put the whole family on one booking so the PNR shows everyone flying together.
What to bring to TLScontact, VFS or BLS in Manchester
- Passport with enough validity and blank pages for the country you are applying to.
- Share code printout from the UKVI status service, generated within the last few days.
- Employer or university letter confirming your role or course and your approved leave.
- Bank statements for the period the checklist names.
- The flight document the checklist asks for: our reservation for Germany, a refundable ticket for Spain or Italy.
- Hotel bookings or an invitation covering every night.
Spend two minutes on the carrier's website the evening before, confirming the hold still shows. If anything has changed, you have time to sort it before you set off for the centre.
Ordering from Manchester
- Read your checklist's flight line. If it rules out reservations or wants a price shown, buy a refundable fare instead.
- Enter your route on the booking form, starting from MAN or wherever you will really fly from.
- Add every traveller with names copied from the passport's data page.
- Pay £7 per passenger by card through Razorpay.
- Watch your inbox; the PDF normally lands within ten minutes.
- Retrieve the PNR yourself on the carrier's website, following our PNR checking guide.
Need an update on an order? Try order tracking. Rupee, dirham, riyal and dollar prices sit beside sterling on our fees page.
How far ahead should you book?
Each hold is good for up to 2 weeks. Where it ends inside that window is the airline's choice. Order it during the final stretch before handing over your documents, rather than on the evening a TLScontact slot pops up. Under Schengen rules a file can go in as early as six months before departure, and should be lodged at least 15 days before you fly.[13] If the centre loses a week or the consulate asks for more papers, order a replacement rather than submit something that has lapsed.
Manchester-specific pitfalls
- Sending a reservation to Spain. BLS says it will not be accepted.
- A share code that has expired by the time the file is opened.
- UK leave that ends too soon for Italy's or Spain's three-month buffer.
- Booking London when you live in Scotland. Germany and Italy split jurisdiction with Edinburgh.
- Mismatched dates between rota, leave letter, hotel and flight.
Manchester FAQ
Is it possible to skip London and lodge a Schengen file here?
For several countries, yes. Germany and France use TLScontact centres in Manchester, Italy has a VFS satellite centre on Devonshire Street North, and Spain has a full consulate in the city with a BLS centre. Each mission sets its own district rules, so check whether your postcode falls under London, Manchester or Edinburgh before booking a slot.
Does the German Embassy accept a flight reservation?
Its UK document list asks for a "reserved return airline/ ferry/ train ticket", which an unpaid hold under your own name and a working PNR satisfies on its face. The page also reminds applicants that a complete file does not guarantee a visa, which is why we never call our document a guarantee. The decision is the embassy's.
Can I use a reservation for a Spanish visa at BLS Manchester?
No. The BLS Manchester tourist page says reservations will not be accepted and asks for tickets or the carrier's email confirmation. Buy a refundable fare directly from the airline, keep the refund terms, and cancel if the visa is refused. We would not sell you a reservation for this file.
I no longer have a BRP card. What do I show?
Your eVisa. GOV.UK explains that BRPs have been replaced and that you prove your status with a share code, valid for 90 days. Germany asks for the printout from the UKVI "Prove your immigration status" service. Generate it close to the appointment and make sure your passport is linked to your UKVI account.
How much does it cost in pounds?
Seven pounds per person, single or return alike, with multi-city journeys charged for each two sectors. Card payment goes through Razorpay at checkout, and your document follows by email roughly ten minutes later. We have no shop in Manchester and cannot take cash.
Will London or Belfast want to see my flights?
No. American guidance warns against paying for travel ahead of a decision, and the officer is far more interested in your ties and purpose. Manchester residents can book either London or Belfast. Carrying a reservation is optional; if you do, call it a reservation and keep the dates consistent with your DS-160.
How long will the reservation last?
No more than 2 weeks, and each airline picks its own limit within that. Order during the week of your appointment, and get a replacement if the date is moved.

Please note: what we issue is an unpaid hold, and no hold has ever earned anyone a visa on its own. Name it honestly, match it to the rest of the file, and pay for a proper fare whenever the list says so.
