Dummy Ticket for Visa in the San Francisco Bay Area: Consulates, US Status Rules and SFO Routes

If you live in the Bay Area on an H-1B, L-1, F-1 or green card, a $9 airline hold under a live PNR covers each traveller and lands in your inbox around 10 minutes after payment. Germany's US checklist asks for confirmed round-trip reservations; Italy's San Francisco consulate asks for a ticket, which a reservation may not satisfy.

This page is for people who live and work around the Bay, from the Mission to Milpitas, and need to apply for someone else's visa while holding US status. Most of our Bay Area customers are on H-1B, L-1 or F-1 papers, or hold a green card, and their passports are Indian, Chinese, Filipino, Vietnamese, Mexican, Nigerian or Pakistani. US citizens rarely need us, because Europe and the UK let them in visa-free for short trips. We are an online service with no office in California; you order and pay on the website and the booking arrives by email.

Which office takes a Bay Area application?

Short answer: the consulate of your main destination, through whatever provider it uses in San Francisco. Your address decides the district, not your passport. A Bengaluru-born engineer living in Sunnyvale sits inside the San Francisco districts that Germany, Italy and France each publish.

Germany no longer accepts Schengen files at the consulate itself. Its own page says applications "can only be submitted through" BLS International, and the district covers Northern California, Alaska, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Washington and Wyoming.[1] German consular appointments across the US are booked via BLS, apart from Atlanta.[3]

Italy is the opposite. You go in person to the consulate, book through Prenot@Mi, and the page is blunt that a resident of the district "cannot apply at another Consulate".[4] The Italian district runs from Northern and Central California up to Alaska and across to Utah and Hawaii; ten southern California counties belong to Los Angeles instead.[6]

France sends visa questions away from the consulate altogether. The consulate's page points applicants to france-visas.gouv.fr and to its provider, TLS VISA, and lists a district that includes Northern California and Northern Nevada.[7]

For a trip that touches several Schengen countries, the German checklist spells out the rule: your application belongs with the country that gets the largest share of nights, and the first-entry rule kicks in only on a perfect tie.[2]

What US status do the consulates want to see?

This is where Bay Area files most often go wrong, and it has nothing to do with flights. Each mission sets its own rule about your US status.

  • Germany (US checklist, May 2024): asks for a "US alien registration card or valid US resident visa", listing types A, E, F with an endorsed I-20, G, H, I, J, L, O and R, plus proof of address such as a driver's licence or lease.[2]
  • Italy (San Francisco): wants a green card or a long-term US visa "valid for at least three months beyond the intended departure" from Schengen, and states that B1/B2 holders cannot apply there.[5]
  • Italy, address: proof of physical residence in the district, such as a driver's licence, state ID or a utility bill.[5]

A practical point we hear about often: H-1B workers whose visa stamp has expired but whose I-797 approval is still current. The checklists above talk about a "valid" visa, and we cannot tell you how a given officer reads that. Our advice is to email the mission before you pay for anything, including our booking. It costs nothing to ask, and the answer decides whether you apply now or after your next stamping trip.

What do the San Francisco checklists say about flights?

Wording varies a lot between missions, and one asks for something we do not sell.

DestinationWhere Bay Area residents applyExact wording on travelWhat that means for you
GermanyBLS International, San Francisco[1]"Confirmed flight (roundtrip)/travel reservations with the name of passenger"[2]A held booking with your name and a live PNR fits this wording
ItalyConsulate, in person[4]"Round trip ticket, originating in this jurisdiction"; "The thirteen-digit paid ticket number must be visible and legible on the ticket."[5]A held reservation will probably not satisfy this. Buy a refundable fare instead
FranceTLS VISA, Market Street[7]Document list is generated by France-Visas for your profileFollow the list you are given
UKVFS Global, San Francisco[8]"Flight bookings (unless transiting)" appear under less useful documents[9]Usually leave it out
CanadaOnline, biometrics in the US[10]Itinerary evidence may include copies of flight details[11]Optional; a reservation shows your dates
Wording copied from each official page, last checked October 2026.

The Italian line deserves a second read. The consulate wants a ticket that starts in its district, and its wording describes an issued, paid ticket. We will not pretend our reservation is one, and we would steer you to a refundable fare bought directly from the airline. The same document also asks for every internal leg, rail pass or car hire inside Europe, with names matching the passports.[5]

Germany, on the other hand, says "reservations". Its general US visa page also warns that forged documents or itineraries can lead to refusal.[3] That is the whole case for a real PNR rather than an edited PDF: an officer can look it up.

Which SFO routes look natural on a reservation?

Pick a routing a Bay Area resident would actually fly. Officers see thousands of these; an odd itinerary invites a question you then have to answer.

  • Frankfurt: Lufthansa sells nonstop SFO–Frankfurt, roughly 19 flights a week at the time we looked.[12]
  • Munich: Lufthansa also flies SFO–Munich nonstop, about 13 times a week.[13]
  • India: Air India lists nonstop service between San Francisco and Delhi, and from Bengaluru and Mumbai into SFO.[14] Useful when the trip home to India is part of a longer journey.

For Italy or France, a connection through Frankfurt or Munich is ordinary. A Germany-bound engineer from Fremont flying SFO–Frankfurt and back on a Lufthansa hold is about as unremarkable as a file gets, which is exactly what you want.

Example: a Sunnyvale couple heading to Munich

Suppose Priya and Arjun live in Sunnyvale. She is on an H-1B with a current stamp, he holds an H-4. They plan ten days in Bavaria over Christmas, with two nights in Salzburg. Germany has more days, so Germany it is, and their address puts them in the San Francisco district.[1][2]

Their BLS appointment is on 20 November. We would have them order the reservation on 17 or 18 November: SFO–Munich, return from Munich, both names on one PNR, spelt exactly as in their Indian passports. The hotel bookings, insurance certificate and employer letter all carry the same dates. They print the BLS checklist the night before and tick each line against the German list, including the H-4 and I-797 copies.

Once the visas arrive, they buy real tickets. Same route if the price is right, different if not. Nothing obliges them to fly the exact flights on the reservation, though we would keep the dates within the visa's validity.

Example: a green-card holder in Oakland going to Florence

Now take Marisol, a Filipino national with a green card, living in Oakland. She wants two weeks in Tuscany. Her address puts her under the Italian consulate on Webster Street, and she cannot apply in Los Angeles or New York instead.[4][6]

Here we would be honest with her: Italy's San Francisco list asks for an issued round trip ticket starting in the district.[5] What we sell is an unpaid hold, so it falls short of that wording. The safer route is a fully refundable fare from SFO, bought from the airline, plus the train tickets between cities the list also asks for. She keeps the refund terms in her own records in case the visa is refused.

Notes for common Bay Area passports

Indian passport holders make up a large share of H-1B and F-1 applicants here. You need Schengen and UK visas; Canada requires a visitor visa too. Our guide for US-based Indians covers trips home and onward travel in more depth.

Chinese passport holders face the same Schengen and UK visa rules. See our guide for Chinese travellers for destinations outside Europe.

Filipino and Vietnamese passport holders on green cards often assume the card replaces a Schengen visa. It does not. The card is your residence proof in the file, nothing more. Our Filipino travellers guide and Vietnamese travellers guide go further.

Mexican passport holders do not need a Schengen visa for short trips, but airlines may still check onward plans on one-way journeys. See our Mexican travellers guide.

UK and Canada from the Bay Area

Both are common side trips for Bay Area residents, and neither turns on a flight booking.

For the UK, VFS Global opened 38 visa centres across the US on 15 July 2025, including San Francisco, replacing the old DHS support centres.[8] You book, attend, give biometrics and hand in your passport at the same place. GOV.UK's own guidance lists flight bookings among documents that do not help a normal visit application, so we would usually leave them out and spend the effort on finances and employment evidence.[9] If you are only changing planes at Heathrow, that is different, and the onward booking matters.

For Canada, you give biometrics at a US Application Support Center or a VAC, and IRCC says you "must already be legally in the US" to do so.[10] IRCC's supporting-document guidance describes itinerary evidence that can include flight details.[11] A reservation is a sensible way to show dates without buying anything before a decision.

How to order from the Bay Area

  1. Confirm your consulate and provider using the table above and the mission's own page.
  2. Check the flight line on your checklist. If it demands an issued or paid ticket, stop and buy a refundable fare instead.
  3. Fill in the booking form with SFO as origin, your destination, dates and every traveller, names copied from each passport.
  4. Pay $9 per passenger by card through Razorpay. Non-dollar prices sit on our pricing page.
  5. Open the email that arrives in about 10 minutes and check names, dates and routing.
  6. Look the PNR up with your surname on the carrier's own site; this walk-through on checking a PNR helps.

Email gone missing? Use order lookup and your reference number.

When should you book it?

Close to the appointment, not the day you snag the slot. Expect it to remain valid for up to 2 weeks; how long exactly is the airline's decision. The EU lets a Schengen file go in half a year before departure at the earliest and 15 days before it at the latest; a standard decision takes 15 days.[15] BLS slots in San Francisco can be weeks out, so a booking made on the day you grab a slot may lapse long before anyone looks at it. Three or four days before the appointment is our sweet spot.

Bay Area mistakes we would avoid

  • Applying in Los Angeles because the slot came sooner. Italy says you cannot, and other missions draw districts too, so check before you book.
  • A reservation starting in India when you live in Cupertino. Italy wants travel that starts in its district, and every consulate expects your trip to begin where you live.
  • Leaving the H-4 spouse or a child off the PNR. Every applicant needs a place on the itinerary.
  • Using our reservation where an issued ticket is demanded. Read the line first.
  • Ignoring status expiry dates that fall inside the three months after your trip.

San Francisco Bay Area FAQ

Do I need a flight reservation for a German Schengen visa from San Francisco?

The German missions' US checklist lists "Confirmed flight (roundtrip)/travel reservations with the name of passenger". A held booking under a live PNR, in your name, matches that wording. You submit through BLS International, not at the consulate. Order it a few days before your appointment so the hold is current while BLS and the consulate handle your papers.

Can I use a reservation for the Italian consulate in San Francisco?

Probably not. Its tourist checklist asks for an issued round trip ticket that starts in the district. An unpaid hold is not that, so buy a refundable fare from the airline instead, and keep the refund conditions with your papers in case the visa is refused.

I am on an H-1B. Can I apply for a Schengen visa in San Francisco?

Yes, if you live in the relevant district. Germany lists H visas among accepted US resident visas, and Italy accepts long-term visas valid at least three months past your exit from Schengen. Bring proof of address too. If your stamp has expired but your approval notice is current, ask the mission in writing before you book anything.

Do green-card holders still need a Schengen visa?

Your passport decides that, not the card. A green card does not exempt an Indian, Chinese or Filipino national from the Schengen visa. It does count as your proof of lawful residence in the application, and Italy names the alien registration card specifically. Check the visa list for your nationality first.

Is there a DummyTicketPrice office in the Bay Area?

No. We work only online, with no counter in San Francisco or anywhere else. Orders go through our website form, a card payment of $9 a passenger runs via Razorpay, and you receive a PDF by email in about 10 minutes. Support is on WhatsApp and email if something looks wrong.

Can I board a flight at SFO with this reservation?

No. The airline is holding a seat under a PNR, but nothing has been paid, so check-in will not accept it. Once the visa is approved, buy your ticket for dates inside the visa's validity. You are free to pick a different flight or airline from the one on the reservation.

Should a Bay Area UK visitor visa file include flights?

Usually not. The Home Office guide rates flight bookings as weak evidence for an ordinary visit, transit cases aside. Your money and time are better spent on bank statements, an employer letter and proof of US status. You enrol biometrics at the VFS Global centre in San Francisco.

How long will a Bay Area reservation stay valid?

For up to 2 weeks. The airline, not us, fixes the precise length. Order it in the run-up to your BLS, TLS or VFS slot, and if that slot shifts, buy a replacement timed to the new date instead of leaning on the old hold.

Dummy ticket price for applicants in United States

If your phone number is a United States number (+1), a flight reservation costs $9 per passenger, one way or round trip. The price follows the country of your phone number, not where you are flying, so a San Francisco applicant pays the same for Dubai, London or Toronto. Multi-city itineraries are priced per pair of flights and a hotel booking costs the same per stay.

Why a live reservation beats a free "ticket generator"

A generated ticket has no PNR. A visa officer who checks it finds nothing, and a refusal for a false document is the hardest kind to appeal.
