Dummy Ticket for Family and Spouse Visit Visas: What the Official Checklists Say

To visit a spouse or relative abroad, most countries accept a flight reservation rather than a paid ticket. Dutch and German family-visit checklists ask for a reservation, Canada wants the leaving date in the invitation letter, and the UK and Australia barely weigh flights. The UAE relative visa is the exception: ICP lists a return travel ticket.

Visiting a husband, wife, parent or grown-up child abroad feels like the simplest trip there is. You know where you are staying, you know who is paying, and you know why you are going. Yet family visit files get refused for reasons that have little to do with the family: dates that do not match the invitation, a host's documents missing, or a return that is not clear. This guide compares family-visit rules from six places (Europe's Schengen zone, the UK, the US, Canada, Australia and the UAE) on flights, with quotes and links, and explains where a held reservation fits and where the rules ask for a ticket. Indian passport holders are our main example, as they need a visa or entry permit for all six; we note other cases along the way.

One boundary first. This page is about short visits. Moving abroad to live with a spouse is a settlement or residence application with its own rules, and it is not covered here.

Do you need a flight ticket to visit your spouse or family abroad?

Across Europe, Britain, the US, Canada and Australia, nothing official asks you to buy one before the decision. A reservation, or simply clear dates, is what fits. The UAE is different: the visit visa is filed by your relative in the UAE, and ICP lists a return travel ticket among its conditions. A held reservation may not satisfy that, so ask the typing centre or your relative what they will upload.

In every case, the flight plays a supporting role. What carries a family visit file is the relationship proof, the host's status, the money, and a convincing reason you will go home on the date you say.

Schengen family visit: the host does a lot of the work

For a Schengen visit to relatives, the flight wording is the same relaxed wording as for tourism, but the host's side of the file becomes central. The Dutch checklist asks for a booking covering your journey in and out, or other evidence of your travel plans, says plainly that no paid ticket is needed, and asks for at least €55 per day in funds.[1] If you stay with the person who invited you, a completed proof of sponsorship and/or private accommodation form is needed, together with their Dutch ID or residence permit.[1]

  • Germany (India): an "Original signed invitation letter from the family member/friend in Germany" with their address, the intended period and duration of stay, and evidence of their legal residence; item 14 is "Flight reservation".[3]
  • Germany, sponsored by a spouse: where your spouse in Germany sponsors you, the checklist asks for a sponsor letter, their passport copy, the German residence permit if they are not German, and the marriage certificate.[3]
  • Spain (Mumbai): round-trip flight bookings and, for visits to family, an invitation letter from the resident in Spain.[4]

The usual Schengen timing applies: apply between six months and 15 days before the trip, and allow 15 days for a decision, sometimes up to 45.[5]

Spouse of an EU citizen: a lighter route

If your husband or wife is an EU, EEA or Swiss citizen, and they live in or are travelling to a Schengen country other than their own, you may qualify for visa facilitation. Netherlands Worldwide says that if you meet the requirements "you do not need to pay any visa fees", though external service providers still charge their service fee.[2]

The flight wording is precise and worth reading twice. Show a booking under your own name for arriving in and leaving the Schengen zone; paying for it is not required. If you travel with your EU spouse, you also need to show "a reservation in their name" or another document showing their travel plans.[2] In practice, that means one booking listing both of you is the neatest evidence. If the EU spouse is already living in the Netherlands, you show their residence instead of their flight.

Spouses of Dutch citizens visiting the Netherlands generally use the ordinary route, with some exceptions explained on the same page.[2]

UK family visit: the sponsor matters more than the flight

A spouse or parent visiting family in the UK applies as a Standard Visitor, which costs £135 for up to six months; you can apply up to three months before you travel.[7] Flight bookings sit on the Home Office's list of documents that add little.[6] When a UK relative funds your trip, food or stay, the Home Office wants proof of the kind of support, the way it is given, how you are related, and the supporter's lawful status in Britain.[6]

So spend your effort on the marriage or birth certificate, your relative's passport or residence document, and their bank evidence if they are paying. A reservation is optional. Our UK visa application guide covers the visitor route in full.

US B-2 visit to family

Visiting relatives is part of the B-2 category; the State Department lists visits with friends or relatives among tourism purposes.[8] Its flight advice is the one every visitor gets: wait for the visa before buying tickets or fixing final plans.[8] The interview is where your ties at home and the purpose of the visit are tested. Know your dates and who you are visiting; a reservation is a convenience, not a requirement. Our US visa interview guide has more.

Canada: the invitation letter states the leaving date

Canada is the destination where the host's letter and your flight overlap most directly. IRCC's guidance says an invitation letter should include, among other details, "how long the person plans to stay in Canada", "where the person will stay, and how he or she will pay for things", and "when the person plans to leave Canada".[9] It also cautions: "A letter of invitation doesn't guarantee that we'll issue a visa."[9]

Separately, the visitor visa page suggests including flight details and proof of accommodation.[10] Our advice: make the reservation's return date and the letter's leaving date identical. If your daughter in Toronto writes that you will leave on 18 March, your reservation should fly out on 18 March, not 25. The fee is CAN$100 per person plus CAN$85 biometrics.[10] See our Canada visa guide.

Australia: two family routes, neither asks for flights

You can visit family on the Visitor visa (subclass 600) Tourist stream, which covers visiting family or friends for up to 12 months and does not need a sponsor. Its document list suggests a letter from your relative in Australia stating their relationship to you, the purpose and length of the visit, and if you will stay with them.[11]

The Sponsored Family stream is the alternative where a relative formally sponsors you. Your sponsor completes Form 1149, you provide documents proving the relationship, such as birth or marriage certificates, and the department "might ask your sponsor to pay a security bond".[12] Neither stream's list includes a flight booking. If your married name differs from the name on older documents, both pages list a marriage certificate as acceptable proof of a change of name.[11][12] Our Australia visa guide covers the visitor visa further.

UAE: your relative applies, and a return ticket is listed

In the UAE, a resident sponsors a relative's visit visa. ICP's service page sets income thresholds for the sponsor: AED 4,000 a month for first-degree relatives, AED 8,000 for second- and third-degree relatives, and AED 15,000 for friends, with proof of kinship. First degree covers father, mother, spouse, son and daughter. Alongside UAE health insurance and six months of passport validity, the conditions name a "Return Travel Ticket".[13] ICP announced these income levels in September 2025.[15]

GDRFA Dubai's single-entry relative visa lists a marriage contract, birth certificate and the sponsor's salary certificate or employment contract, with fees of AED 200, 300 or 400 for 30, 60 or 90 days, plus VAT, insurance and an AED 1,000 security deposit.[14]

Because the condition says ticket, we will not suggest that a held reservation will satisfy it. Ask the person filing the application what they will upload. If they need a ticket, a refundable fare protects you if plans change. More in our UAE visa guide.

Spouse visits: names, children and travelling together

Couples run into a few problems that single travellers never meet. Most come from names.

  • Book each person exactly as in their own passport. If the wife's passport still shows her maiden name, the reservation uses the maiden name. The marriage certificate connects the two names.
  • Put a travelling couple on one booking. It shows at a glance that you are travelling together, as the Dutch EU-spouse checklist effectively expects.[2]
  • Include children on the same reservation, with infants shown as infants. Our guide to reservations for several passengers covers name formats.
  • If only one spouse is applying, the reservation is in that person's name alone, and the invitation explains who they are visiting.
  • Match the host's letter. Arrival and leaving dates in the reservation and the invitation should be the same days.

How long should a family visit be?

Long visits to children abroad, especially by retired parents, are common and allowed: Schengen permits up to 90 days in any 180, the UK up to six months, and Australia's family routes up to 12 months.[5][7][11] The officer still wants the length to make sense. A working applicant with three weeks of leave and a 75-day reservation will be asked why. A retired parent visiting for a grandchild's birth, with a 60-day plan and a return to a home they own, tells a coherent story. Say the reason in the covering letter.

Say your son in Frankfurt is expecting a baby on 20 January. A plan to arrive on 10 January and leave on 25 February, with his invitation giving the same dates and a note on the birth, is easy to follow. A reservation that leaves on 9 April, past the 90-day limit, would be refused on that alone.

Step by step: a family visit file, flight included

  1. Agree the dates with your host before anyone writes a letter.
  2. Ask the host for their documents: invitation, ID or residence permit, and the sponsorship form or financial proof the checklist asks for.
  3. Gather relationship proof: marriage certificate, birth certificates, or a family register.
  4. Check the flight wording on your checklist: reservation, flight details, or ticket.
  5. Book a reservation for all travellers on the agreed dates, a few days before the appointment, or a refundable ticket where a ticket is required.
  6. Verify it on the airline's website; our verification guide shows how.
  7. Once the visa arrives, purchase the actual fare for dates inside the permitted stay.

Frequently asked questions

Is a flight reservation enough to visit my husband in Germany?

For the ordinary Schengen route from India, Germany's family-visit checklist lists a "Flight reservation", so a verifiable reservation fits. If your husband is a German citizen, ask the mission whether a different checklist applies to you. If he is a citizen of another EU country living in Germany, the visa facilitation route may apply, and that also accepts a reservation.

Does my wife need to be on the same reservation if she is already abroad?

No. If she already lives in the destination country, the reservation is only for the person travelling. Her residence permit or ID and her invitation letter show where she is. Only travellers on this trip go on the booking, so a single applicant has a single name on it.

Can my son in Canada book the reservation for me?

Yes. Anyone can make the booking, as long as the name matches your passport and the dates match his invitation letter. IRCC's letter guidance asks him to state when you plan to leave Canada, so the two documents should agree on that date exactly.

Do parents visiting children need a return flight?

They need to show they will return, and a return reservation is the simplest way to show the date. For the UAE, a return ticket is a listed condition. Elsewhere the wording is reservation, flight details or simply travel plans. Either way, the stronger evidence is the parent's home, pension or property and family ties at home.

Is this the same as a spouse visa?

No. A family visit visa is a short stay, with a fixed return. A spouse or partner visa to live together is a residence application with separate requirements, and flight reservations play a different role there, if any. This guide covers visits only.

What if my host changes the dates after I apply?

Before the appointment, update both the invitation and the reservation so they match. After you have applied, there is usually no need to resubmit; plan your real ticket inside whatever validity is granted. If the visa cannot be used for the new dates, contact the mission that issued it.

Can I use one reservation for a family of five?

Yes. One booking can list several passengers, which is the clearest way to show you travel together. Prices are per passenger. Infants are shown on the booking as infants, and names must follow each passport exactly. Our visit visa guide also covers staying with relatives.
