Dummy Ticket for Visa in Zimbabwe: A Guide for Applicants in Bulawayo, Victoria Falls, Mutare and Gweru

Outside Harare, a Schengen visa means a trip to the capital: Germany wants you in person and the Dutch VFS centre is there. US routine visas left Harare on 1 August 2026. Order our held booking with a live PNR from Bulawayo, Mutare or anywhere else for $9 a head by card; the PDF follows in roughly 10 minutes.

Zimbabwe's visa geography is lopsided. The embassies and visa centres that matter are clustered in Harare, while a big share of applicants live in Bulawayo, Victoria Falls, Mutare, Gweru, Masvingo or Beitbridge. On top of that, the United States moved its routine visa work out of the country in August 2026. This guide is written for people who live anywhere in Zimbabwe and have to plan around those distances. It covers which mission takes which file, where it is decided, how the flight evidence is worded, and when our $9 reservation makes sense. If you are based in the capital, our separate Harare guide covers the city in more detail. Everything we do happens online; you will not find us on any Zimbabwean high street.

Which missions take files, and where are they decided?

For a resident of Bulawayo or Mutare, the honest answer is "Harare, or further". Here is the picture from official pages.

United KingdomOnline, then VFS biometrics in Harare or, on Saturdays, the Bulawayo premium centre[8][13]"flight bookings (unless transiting)" among less useful evidence[3]Usually skip it
Last checked: October 2026. Apart from the UK's Bulawayo premium centre, we found no official mention of a visa desk outside Harare for these countries.

Two details here trip people up. First, the German Embassy says it no longer issues visas on behalf of Austria, so an Austria-first trip needs a different desk.[4] Second, the Dutch page notes that Norway, Poland and Slovenia can also be applied for at the Netherlands' location in Zimbabwe, but tells you to check those countries' own requirements.[6]

Why the Harare trip cannot be skipped

The German Embassy states that applications must be submitted personally, and that every person needs an individual appointment.[4][5] Appointments are released four weeks in advance through the online system only, and the embassy says it does not work with brokers or agencies.[4] For a family of four from Bulawayo, that is four slots, ideally on the same morning, and an overnight stay.

The Netherlands sends Zimbabwe applicants to VFS Global in Harare and asks each person to book separately as well.[6] It also warns against booking through intermediaries.[6]

The UK is the exception for the south-west. VFS Global opened a UK premium application centre at Bulawayo Rainbow, on Josiah Tongogara and 10th Avenue, in July 2025. It opens only on Saturdays, from 9 AM to 3 PM, alongside the main centre at Sam Levy's Village in Borrowdale.[13] Premium centres usually cost extra, so compare that with a trip to Harare.

Our practical tip: get the appointment first, then arrange transport to Harare, then order the reservation last, a couple of days before you set off. That order saves money and keeps the PNR live on the day it is looked at.

US visas after 1 August 2026: looking south

Harare is one of the posts where the State Department ended routine visa services on 1 August 2026, as part of moving visa work to regional hubs. The embassy itself stays open for other consular services.[1] The hubs in the region include Johannesburg and Cape Town; your appointment booking will tell you which one handles your case.[1]

There is a second, more serious point. Zimbabwe sits on the list of 19 countries where, from 1 January 2026, US visitor, student, exchange and immigrant visas are only partly being issued under Presidential Proclamation 10998.[14] Look at the latest notice first; a wasted fee and bus fare to Johannesburg add up.

For those who can still apply, the change is mostly about the journey. Zimbabwean citizens are exempt from South African visas for up to 90 days, according to South Africa's Department of Home Affairs.[9] A Beitbridge or Bulawayo resident may find Johannesburg easier to reach than Harare. Foreign nationals living in Zimbabwe should check South Africa's list for their own passport.

No reservation is needed for the interview. Buying tickets before approval is something the State Department tells applicants to avoid.[2] What you do need is a way to get to the hub on the right day, and any South African entry document your passport requires.

How Germany and the Netherlands word the flight item

Germany's tourist checklist in Harare asks for "Proof of your plans to leave Germany e.g. a flight ticket or flight reservation."[5] The phrase "or flight reservation" is the important bit. A paid ticket is not demanded, and a held booking that shows your return date answers the question being asked: will you leave on time?

Next to the reservation, the German list wants a passport with three months' validity beyond your Schengen exit, 30,000 euros of insurance cover, and three months of stamped, signed bank statements no older than a fortnight.[4][5] Your flight dates should match the insurance cover exactly.

The Dutch checklist goes further. It needs "a reservation in your name" for the trip into and out of Schengen, or another document that shows your plans, and says "You do not need a paid travel ticket."[7]

If any checklist you are given asks for a confirmed or paid ticket, take it literally. Our reservation may not satisfy that wording, and a refundable fare is the better choice there.

Which airport should your reservation start from?

Start the itinerary where you would really board. Zimbabwe has three international airports run by the Airports Company of Zimbabwe: Robert Gabriel Mugabe in Harare, Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo in Bulawayo and Victoria Falls.[10] Airlink's network page lists all three.[11]

Where you liveNatural departure pointExample routing for a Schengen file
Bulawayo, Gwanda, PlumtreeBulawayo (Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo)Bulawayo–Johannesburg–Amsterdam
Victoria Falls, HwangeVictoria FallsVictoria Falls–Johannesburg–Frankfurt
Mutare, Gweru, Masvingo, KwekweHarare, after the trip for your appointmentHarare–Addis Ababa or Johannesburg–Europe
Beitbridge and the far southJohannesburg, reached by roadJohannesburg–Europe direct
Example routings only. Check the airline's own site for current schedules.

Starting a reservation in Johannesburg is fine if that is honestly how you will travel. A single sentence in the cover letter saying so avoids any puzzlement.

Example: a Bulawayo teacher visiting Rotterdam

A secondary-school teacher in Bulawayo plans to visit her brother in Rotterdam over the August school holiday. The Netherlands is her only destination, so she applies at VFS Global in Harare.[6] She books her VFS slot for 2 June and the overnight bus to Harare for 1 June.

On 30 May she orders a reservation: Bulawayo to Amsterdam via Johannesburg, out on 2 August and back on 23 August. Her brother's invitation, her insurance and the school's leave letter all cite those dates. The Dutch list asks for a reservation in her name and not a paid ticket, so nothing more is needed on the flight side.[7]

Example: a Victoria Falls guide invited to a Berlin fair

Now a safari guide in Victoria Falls who has been invited to a tourism trade fair in Berlin. Germany is the main destination, so the German Embassy in Harare takes the file, and he must hand it in personally.[5]

He grabs the first appointment released four weeks ahead.[4] His reservation runs Victoria Falls–Johannesburg–Berlin, matching the fair dates plus two days. Germany's checklist accepts a flight reservation as proof he will leave, so he does not buy a ticket until the visa is in his passport.[5] If his employer is paying, the invitation and company letter should say so.

Foreign residents across Zimbabwe

If you hold an Indian, Pakistani, Nigerian, Zambian, Chinese or other foreign passport and live in Zimbabwe, your residence status gets checked before anything else.

  • Germany requires foreign nationals to prove lawful Zimbabwean residence lasting three months or more past the day they exit Schengen.[5]
  • The Netherlands accepts applications at its Harare location only from people who live in Zimbabwe.[6] A visitor passing through must apply in their own country of residence.
  • South Africa is visa-free for Zimbabwean citizens, but not for every passport; check the exemption list if a US interview or transit takes you there.[9]

If your permit is close to expiry, renew before you apply. And let the return flight on your reservation land in Zimbabwe, since that is where your permit says you live.

When to order around a trip to Harare

Last, and close to the appointment. A hold survives for 2 weeks at most; the carrier fixes the real length, and some give less. If you travel up from Masvingo on Monday for a Wednesday slot, order on the weekend before.

The appointment is what you book early. Germany releases dates four weeks ahead and accepts applications up to six months before the trip; its tourist page says processing can take 7 days, or up to 45 working days for some nationalities.[4][5] The EU's general rule is to apply at least 15 days before travel.[12]

Pitfalls for applicants outside Harare

  • One appointment for the whole family at the German Embassy. Each person needs their own.[4]
  • Applying to Germany for an Austria-first trip. The embassy no longer covers Austria.[4]
  • Paying a "fixer" for a slot. Both Germany and the Netherlands warn against it.[4][6]
  • Ordering the reservation when you book the bus rather than just before the appointment.
  • Old bank statements. Germany wants them no older than two weeks on submission day.[5]

Zimbabwe FAQ

Can I apply for a Schengen visa in Bulawayo?

Not as far as official pages showed in October 2026. Germany takes files in person in Harare, and the Netherlands uses VFS Global in Harare. Bulawayo does have a Saturday-only UK premium centre run by VFS, opened in July 2025, but that serves UK applicants only. For Schengen, plan on travelling to the capital.

Where do Zimbabwe residents go for a US visa interview now?

To a regional hub outside Zimbabwe. The State Department ended routine visa services in Harare on 1 August 2026; the hubs nearby include Johannesburg and Cape Town. Zimbabwean citizens do not need a South African visa for stays of up to 90 days. No flight reservation is needed for the interview itself.

Will Germany accept a reservation from a Bulawayo applicant?

Where you live inside Zimbabwe makes no difference to the wording. The embassy's tourist list wants evidence that you will leave Germany, with "a flight ticket or flight reservation" given as the example. A held reservation in your name, on your planned dates, fits that wording. The embassy still decides the application on all the evidence, and a reservation cannot guarantee a visa.

Can my reservation start in Bulawayo or Victoria Falls?

Yes, if that is where you would really fly from. Both are international airports run by the Airports Company of Zimbabwe, and Airlink lists both in its network. The route should look natural for where you live, and the dates must match your form, insurance and leave letter.

How do I pay from Zimbabwe?

Online, with a Visa or Mastercard debit or credit card, through our Razorpay checkout. One way or return, each traveller costs $9. A multi-city itinerary is charged $9 for each pair of legs. We have no agent or cash desk anywhere in Zimbabwe.

I applied to Germany for Malta. Is that right?

It can be. The German Embassy in Harare says it handles Schengen applications when the main destination is Germany or Malta. If Malta is your sole or main destination, Harare's German Embassy is the stated desk. Austria is no longer covered there, so check carefully if your plans include it.

What if my appointment is moved after I order?

Check whether the PNR is still live on the airline's site. Holds last up to 2 weeks and sometimes less, at the airline's discretion. If the new date falls after it lapses, order a fresh reservation a few days before the rescheduled slot.

Dummy ticket price for applicants in Zimbabwe

If your phone number is a Zimbabwe number (+263), a flight reservation costs $9 per passenger, one way or round trip. The price follows the country of your phone number, not where you are flying, so a Chiredzi applicant pays the same for Dubai, London or Toronto. Multi-city itineraries are priced per pair of flights and a hotel booking costs the same per stay.

Why a live reservation beats a free "ticket generator"

A generated ticket has no PNR. A visa officer who checks it finds nothing, and a refusal for a false document is the hardest kind to appeal.
