Applying for a visa from Harare has changed shape. The US Embassy no longer offers routine visa interviews, and since August 2026 Zimbabweans have been formally directed to South Africa for them. European missions, on the other hand, still take applications in Harare, either at the embassy itself or through a visa centre in Borrowdale. This page is for people who live in Harare and the surrounding provinces, whether Zimbabwean or foreign: who takes your file, the exact words each office uses about flights, which routes out of Robert Gabriel Mugabe International make sense on a reservation, and how to order one from us. We are an online service; we have no office in Harare.

What does the German Embassy in Harare ask for?
Evidence that you will leave, and it names a reservation as acceptable. On the embassy's tourist visa page, under "Travel arrangements", the requirement reads: "Proof of your plans to leave Germany e.g. a flight ticket or flight reservation."[2] Few embassies put it so plainly. A held reservation with a live PNR fits it.
Harare is one of the few places where you deal directly with the German Embassy rather than an outsourced centre. Appointments are booked only through the embassy's online system, and the embassy states it does not work with brokers or agencies, who cannot secure appointments.[1] Slots are released four weeks in advance, and you can apply up to six months before you travel.[1]
Some other details from the tourist page that Harare applicants should know:
- Fee. EUR 90 for an adult, charged as the US dollar equivalent and paid in cash at the appointment. Bring small notes.[2]
- Processing. As little as 7 days for a complete file, but up to 45 working days for some nationalities. Submit at least 15 days before departure.[2]
- Bank statements. Original, stamped, signed on every page and accompanied by a bank letter; the embassy's visa page sets out these rules in detail.[1]
- Hotels. The page asks for confirmed hotel bookings for the full stay, or proof of means to cover accommodation.[2]
Going to Malta? The German Embassy in Harare also handles Schengen applications where Malta is the main destination.[1] Our Malta guide covers the island's own requirements.
How does the Dutch application centre in Harare handle flights?
A booking will do; buying is not required. Netherlands Worldwide directs people to VFS Global in Harare, and the desk there serves Zimbabwe residents only.[3] According to the Dutch tourist list, a reservation bearing your name for the journey in and out of Schengen meets the requirement, and no ticket has to be bought.[4]
The same VFS desk also takes Schengen applications for Norway, Poland and Slovenia, though you should check those countries' own requirements.[3] That is useful for Harare residents with family in Oslo or Warsaw, who might otherwise assume they need to travel to South Africa.
Do Harare residents need a flight booking for a UK visa?
Generally not. Britain's visitor-documents guidance from the Home Office treats flight bookings as surplus unless you are passing through the UK in transit.[6] Put your intended dates on the form and spend the effort on income, savings, property and family ties.
Biometrics take place at the VFS centre in Sam Levy's Village, Borrowdale, which has operated since November 2024. VFS also opened a premium centre in Bulawayo in July 2025, open on Saturdays from 9 AM to 3 PM; the announcement described bookings "for the summer season", so check whether it is running when you apply.[5] Our UK visa guide has more on what to send.
How do Zimbabweans apply for a US visa now?
In South Africa. From 1 August 2026 the State Department moved routine visa work from 25 African posts, Harare among them, to regional hubs.[7] The embassy's notice is direct: citizens and residents of Zimbabwe must book and pay at the US Consulates in Johannesburg or Cape Town.[7]
Two consequences follow. First, the interview itself involves international travel, so you will need a real ticket to South Africa and whatever entry permission your passport requires there; see our South Africa guide. Second, Zimbabwean citizens have been subject since 1 January 2026 to a partial halt on US visitor, student and exchange visas, one of 19 nationalities affected.[8] Applicants may still apply, but issuance may be refused, so check the current position before you spend money on fees and flights to Johannesburg.
On the visa trip itself, the State Department's general advice applies: don't buy tickets to the US until the visa is issued.[9] A reservation for the US journey is optional at the interview.
Embassy or VFS appointment in Harare soon?
Order your $9 reservation a few days before and check the PNR on the airline's website.
How do the destinations compare for Harare applicants?
| Destination | Where you apply | Official flight wording | What we'd do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Germany, Malta | German Embassy Harare[1] | "a flight ticket or flight reservation"[2] | Held reservation |
| Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Slovenia | VFS Global Harare[3] | Reservation in your name; paid ticket not needed (Dutch list)[4] | Held reservation; check the other three countries' lists |
| United Kingdom | VFS Borrowdale or Bulawayo[5] | Not needed except for transit[6] | Usually leave out |
| United States | Johannesburg or Cape Town[7] | Don't buy until the visa is issued[9] | Optional; check the suspension first |
What if you live in Harare on a foreign passport?
Then your Zimbabwean residence document is the first thing to check. Germany asks non-Zimbabweans for proof of legal residence in Zimbabwe, valid for at least 3 months beyond the intended departure from the Schengen area.[2] The Dutch checklist uses the same three-month yardstick for residence permits.[4]
That rule shapes the reservation. Say you are an Indian engineer in Harare whose permit expires on 30 June. A trip ending on 15 June would leave only two weeks, short of the three-month margin both lists mention. Renew the permit first, or plan the trip earlier. And route the return to Harare, because that is where your work and permit are.
Germany also notes that processing can take up to 45 working days for some nationalities.[2] If yours is one of them, apply well before the 15-day minimum, and expect to order a fresh reservation if the embassy asks for current flight details later.
Applying with children from Harare
Expect extra paperwork for every child, and put every child on the reservation. The German tourist page says both parents must sign a minor's application form unless one parent has sole custody or both have provided an affidavit.[2] Where one parent has sole custody, you show proof such as a court decision or adoption papers, and you bring passports or ID cards for the parents and the child's birth certificate.[2]
If one parent cannot come to the interview, the child needs a notarised travel-consent affidavit from the parents, with notarised signatures and copies of their passports.[2] Getting that done in Harare can take a few days, so arrange it before you think about flights.
On the reservation itself, list each child under their own name exactly as printed in their passport, on the same PNR as the parents. A family of four needs four names on one booking, and the price is $9 for each of them. A booking that leaves a child off invites the obvious question: who is travelling with whom?
Which routes from Harare look natural?
The connections Harare travellers really use. Emirates' Harare page lists Dubai and Lusaka among its routes from HRE, alongside onward cities such as London and Frankfurt, so an HRE–Dubai–Europe itinerary is ordinary.[10] Ethiopian sells flights to Harare connecting through Addis Ababa.[11] Plenty of Harare travellers also connect through Johannesburg.
Whichever you choose, check whether the connecting country requires a transit visa for your passport. That is a frequent snag for Zimbabwean travellers, and airlines check it at the Harare check-in desk. Our notes on Emirates and Ethiopian bookings explain how each airline's reservations look.

Example: a Mount Pleasant nurse visiting a sister in Berlin
Imagine Rudo, a nurse in Mount Pleasant, whose sister lives in Berlin. She plans two weeks there in May. Germany is her only destination, so she applies at the German Embassy in Harare.[1] She watches the online calendar, because slots appear four weeks ahead, and secures one for 14 April.[1]
Her file includes the invitation, her hospital employment letter, original stamped bank statements with the bank's covering letter, and insurance covering at least EUR 30,000.[1][2] We'd suggest ordering the reservation on 10 or 11 April: Harare to Berlin via Dubai on 8 May, back on 22 May. She brings small US dollar notes for the fee.[2] If the visa comes through, she then buys her ticket for those dates or others inside the visa.
When should a Harare applicant order?
Close to the appointment. Expect any hold to lapse within two weeks; precisely when is up to the carrier. With German appointments released four weeks ahead, it is tempting to order as soon as you secure a slot. Don't. Wait until the last few days, then order and check the booking on the airline's site the evening before.
How do you order from Harare?

- Enter your route on our booking page, normally HRE out and HRE back.
- Copy names from the passport, exactly as printed, for every traveller.
- Pay $9 per passenger online; a return costs the same as one way.
- Expect the email in about 10 minutes, and look in spam if it hasn't arrived.

Order progress is on the tracking page, prices in other currencies on the price page, and accommodation help under hotel reservations.
Which mistakes do we see from Harare?
- Paying an agent for a German appointment. The embassy says such agents cannot secure slots.[1]
- Photocopied bank statements when Germany asks for stamped originals with a bank letter.
- Forgetting small dollar notes for the cash fee.
- Booking the US interview without checking the suspension that applies to Zimbabwean nationals.
- Describing the reservation as a ticket on any form or at the interview.
Harare FAQ
Is there a DummyTicketPrice office in Harare?
No, we are online only, with no desk in Harare, Bulawayo or anywhere else. You complete the booking form, pay $9 per passenger online, and the reservation lands in your email inbox, typically ten minutes after payment, ready for you to print. For help, message us on WhatsApp or send an email.
Does the German Embassy in Harare accept a flight reservation?
Its tourist visa page asks for proof of your plans to leave Germany and gives "a flight ticket or flight reservation" as examples. So a reservation is named as acceptable. The embassy still decides the application and can request more documents. The booking must be genuine and retrievable on the airline's site.
Can Zimbabweans still get a US visa interview in Harare?
Not for routine visas. The US Embassy in Zimbabwe says citizens and residents must book and pay at the consulates in Johannesburg or Cape Town, following the August 2026 move to regional hubs. Holders of Zimbabwean passports must factor in the restrictions on US visitor and student visas that began in January 2026.
Which office in Zimbabwe takes Netherlands visa applications?
At the VFS Global centre in Harare, which only accepts people living in Zimbabwe. The same location takes applications for Norway, Poland and Slovenia. Dutch guidance accepts a booking under your name and spells out that paying for the flight first isn't necessary.
Is there a UK visa centre outside Harare?
VFS opened a premium centre in Bulawayo in July 2025, open on Saturdays from 9 AM to 3 PM, in addition to the main centre in Borrowdale, Harare. Check the VFS site for current availability. For a UK visitor visa, flight bookings are generally not needed, so the location matters more than the reservation.
Can I board a flight at Harare with the reservation?
No. Your seat sits under a live PNR, yet the fare is unpaid, and the check-in desk at HRE will say no. Buy your ticket after the visa is issued, for dates the visa covers. Many travellers keep the routing they reserved, but you are free to change it.
How long does the reservation last?
Up to two weeks; the airline decides precisely. That is why we recommend ordering a few days before your appointment rather than when the slot is first released. If the date moves or the embassy asks for updated flight details, buy a new reservation nearer the time.
Order your Harare reservation
$9 per passenger, online, with a PNR you can check yourself.
Please remember: a reservation is one supporting document, never a ticket and never a guarantee. Keep it truthful and consistent, and accept that the embassy makes the decision.
