Mexican travellers are in an unusual spot. You can land in Madrid, Paris or London without applying for a visa, yet the two countries next door are the ones that ask the most questions. The United States wants a visa and an interview. Canada brought its visa requirement back in February 2024 and now sorts Mexican visitors into eTA holders and visa applicants. So the question "do I need a dummy ticket?" has a different answer depending on where you are going. This guide goes destination by destination, using the governments' own pages, and tells you honestly where a held reservation is worth the $9 and where it adds nothing.

Which trips actually call for a flight reservation?
Short version: Canada visa files, US interviews if you like having dates in hand, and arrival in Europe if you are flying one way or haven't paid for the return yet. Everything else is optional.
A held reservation is a booking created inside an airline's reservation system, carrying your name and a booking reference (PNR) that the airline's website will find. No fare has been paid, so you can't board with it. That is precisely why it suits a visa file: you show a believable plan without spending money on a flight you may not take if the visa is refused.
For a Mexican passport the situations break down roughly like this:
- Canada visitor visa: IRCC asks for evidence of your travel plans, and flight details are one way to show them.[8]
- US B1/B2 visa: not required. Some applicants like to bring a printed itinerary so their dates are consistent when the officer asks.
- Arriving in the Schengen area: a return or round-trip ticket is one of the documents officers can ask to see.[1]
- UK with an ETA: the ETA application itself doesn't ask for flight evidence; carry your real travel details for the border.
Do Mexicans need a return ticket to enter Europe without a visa?
Not by law in every case, but you should be ready to show one. The EU's Your Europe portal tells non-EU visitors that they may be asked to justify the purpose and conditions of their stay, including proof of enough money, and to show documents such as an invitation letter, proof of lodging or a return or round-trip ticket.[1]
In practice, most Mexican tourists fly to Europe on a paid round-trip fare, and the question never arises. It matters when you are doing something less tidy: flying into Lisbon one way because you will take a train to Morocco, or booking a flexible open-jaw trip where the return isn't paid yet. In those cases the officer at the desk in Madrid-Barajas has to decide whether you will leave within 90 days. A reservation leaving the Schengen area, booked under your name on dates that fit, gives them something concrete to look at.
Two newer systems sit in the background. The Entry/Exit System now records your face, fingerprints and dates of entry and exit instead of stamping the passport, and it became fully operational on 10 April 2026.[2] ETIAS, the online travel authorisation for visa-free visitors, is not running yet; the official site says operations will start in the last quarter of 2026 and that the EU will announce the exact date months ahead.[3] Neither system asks you to upload a flight booking, as far as the official pages describe them.
Be accurate at the desk. If an officer asks whether your return is paid, say what it is: a reservation. Officers can work with an honest answer. They react badly to a document that turns out to be something other than what you claimed.
What changed for Mexicans flying to Canada?
Since 11:30 p.m. Eastern time on 29 February 2024, most Mexican visitors need a visitor visa again. IRCC's page for Mexican citizens says you can still use an eTA, but only if all three of these are true: you are flying to Canada or transiting a Canadian airport on a valid Mexican passport, the stay is temporary, and you either hold a valid US non-immigrant visa now or had a visitor visa for Canada at some point in the last 10 years.[7]
The same page makes two points people miss. An eTA covers air travel only, so a road trip across the border from Detroit needs a visa. And having had an eTA before is not the same as having had a visa. It lists the visitor visa fee at CAD 100 plus CAD 85 for biometrics.[7]
If you end up on the visa route, this is where a reservation earns its keep. IRCC's supporting-documents page for visitors suggests including your travel itinerary, and flight bookings are a natural part of that.[8] Canadian processing times can stretch, so we would not hold a reservation for the whole wait. Should you book flights before a US visa interview?
No paid ticket, and a reservation is optional. On its visitor visa page, the State Department warns applicants against purchasing travel tickets before the visa is issued.[9] The DS-160 asks for your intended arrival date and length of stay, not a booking reference.
Where a reservation can help is consistency. Say you told the DS-160 you would arrive in Houston on 20 December for ten days. At the consulate in Monterrey the officer asks when you're travelling. Having a printed itinerary that matches what you typed months earlier keeps your answer straight. It doesn't make the decision for you; the interview turns on your purpose, your ties to Mexico and your finances. Our US visa interview guide covers this in more depth.
What about the UK: visa or ETA?
An ETA. GOV.UK lists Mexico among the nationalities who can apply now.[4] An ETA costs £20 and lets you visit for up to six months, covering the UK, Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man.[5] It is an online permission, not a visa file, so there is no checklist where a flight reservation would go.

Does Mexico check anything when you leave?
For adults, we found no official rule that you must show a return ticket to Mexican immigration on the way out. The airline checks that you can enter your destination, which is a different question covered in the next sections.
Children are the exception worth knowing about. The Formato de Salida de Menores (SAM) from the Instituto Nacional de Migración is the document that lets a Mexican minor, or a minor with Mexican residence, travel abroad alone or with an adult other than their parents. Mexico's consulate in Montreal describes it, and notes that the rules turn on whether a parent lives in Mexico.[10] If you are sending a teenager on a school trip to Spain, sort the SAM out before you think about flights.

Will the airline in Mexico City ask for proof of return?
It can. Check-in agents sometimes ask how you'll leave a country you're entering visa-free, particularly when the booking is one way. Nobody publishes a single rule for this; it depends on the airline and the destination. If you fly AICM to Madrid on a one-way fare, having an onward reservation ready on your phone is a sensible precaution. How do you prepare the flight part of your file?
- Find out which permission you need. eTA or visa for Canada, ETA for the UK, nothing in advance for Schengen (until ETIAS starts).
- Write down your real dates, including leave from work, so the reservation, hotel and insurance line up.
- Enter both surnames exactly as printed. Mexican passports usually show apellido paterno and apellido materno; don't drop one.
- Order the reservation one or two days before you submit or before you fly, not weeks earlier.
- Look it up under Manage booking on the carrier's site, using the reference plus your surname. Screenshot the result.
- Describe it correctly in forms and at the border: a flight reservation.
- Once approved, buy the ticket you will fly on.
An example to make it concrete. Suppose you live in Guadalajara, don't qualify for the Canadian eTA, and plan to see Toronto from 3 to 17 March. You'd prepare the visa application in January, order the reservation for those dates the day before you upload it, and buy the real fare once the visa is in your passport. That's an illustration of timing, not a real customer.
Mistakes we'd steer you away from
- Merging or dropping a surname, so the booking says "Garcia" while the passport says "García López".
- Assuming an old eTA still works for Canada. IRCC says eTAs issued before 29 February 2024 were cancelled, apart from some permit holders.[7]
- Buying a non-refundable US ticket before the interview.
- Flying to Europe one way with no plan to show.
- Paying a stranger online for a PDF that doesn't open on any airline site. Run through our provider checklist first.

How do you get a reservation from Mexico, and what does it cost?
Use the booking page. Enter your route, say Mexico City to Toronto and back, and each passenger's name as the passport shows it. Each traveller costs $9, whether you need one leg or a return; for multi-city plans we charge for every pair of legs. Payment is by card via Razorpay, with your bank turning the dollar amount into pesos at whatever rate it applies. Expect an email with the PDF, naming the airline and showing the PNR, roughly ten minutes later; you can watch progress on order tracking.
How long does it last? The airline fixes the hold, which runs two weeks at most, so order near the date you submit or fly. Do Mexicans need a dummy ticket for a Schengen trip?
Not for a visa, because Mexicans don't need one for short stays. At the border, though, the EU says officers may ask for supporting documents such as a return or round-trip ticket. If your return is already paid, bring that. If you're flying one way, a reservation out of the Schengen area shows your planned exit.
Can I still get a Canadian eTA with a Mexican passport?
Only if you fly, the stay is temporary, and you either hold a valid US non-immigrant visa or were issued a Canadian visitor visa within the last decade. Otherwise IRCC requires a visitor visa, which costs CAD 100 plus CAD 85 for biometrics. An earlier eTA does not count as a previous visa.
Does a flight reservation help a Canadian visa application?
It can. IRCC's supporting-documents guidance for visitors suggests including your travel itinerary, and a flight reservation shows dates and routing without buying a ticket before a decision. Upload one made shortly before you submit, keep the dates consistent with your other documents, and book the real flight once approved.
Should I bring a reservation to my US visa interview in Mexico?
It's optional. Buy no tickets before the visa, the State Department says; the officer's real interest is your reason for going and your reasons to return. A printed reservation can keep your dates consistent with your DS-160, but it is not requested and will not decide the outcome.
Do I need a visa for the UK as a Mexican?
No visa for a visit, but you do need an Electronic Travel Authorisation. GOV.UK lists Mexico among eligible nationalities, the ETA costs £20, and it covers visits of up to six months. The online application doesn't ask for flight evidence.
What is the SAM format?
It is the Instituto Nacional de Migración's form for minors leaving Mexico alone or with an adult who isn't their parent or guardian. Mexico's consular pages describe when it applies, which depends partly on whether a parent lives in Mexico. Arrange it before the trip; it is separate from any flight booking.
How much does a reservation cost in pesos?
Every traveller is $9, single leg or return alike, and your card issuer turns that into pesos at its own exchange rate, sometimes adding a foreign-transaction fee. Multi-city journeys cost $9 for each pair of legs. Payment goes through Razorpay, and the PDF usually arrives in about 10 minutes.
