Lusaka is where nearly every foreign mission in Zambia sits, so most visa journeys for Zambians and for the expatriates who live here start somewhere between Kabulonga, Ibex Hill and Rhodes Park. The catch in 2026 is that "start" no longer means "finish". Some files are decided in Nairobi, US interviews now happen in South Africa, and a few Schengen countries are handled at another country's desk. This guide sorts out who takes your application, what each one writes about flights, and where a $9 reservation from us fits. We are an online service; there is no DummyTicketPrice office in Lusaka.

Which mission takes a Lusaka resident's application?
For most destinations the answer is still "someone in Lusaka", but not always the country you are visiting. Here is how the main ones line up.
| Destination | Where a Lusaka resident applies | Official wording on flights | Our view |
|---|---|---|---|
| Germany, Austria, Hungary, Slovenia | German Embassy Lusaka, by appointment[3][4] | "Flight Reservation and complete intended itinerary"; no proof of purchase needed before the visa[4] | A held reservation matches this |
| Netherlands | Swedish application centre of VFS Global, Lusaka[5] | A reservation in your name; "You do not need a paid travel ticket"[6] | A held reservation matches this |
| Sweden | VFS Lusaka; files handled by the Swedish Embassy in Nairobi[7] | Follow the checklist VFS issues for your purpose | Reservation, unless told otherwise |
| United States | Interview booked and fee paid in Johannesburg since 1 August 2026[1] | State Department advice: don't buy tickets before the visa[14] | Not required; optional at most |
| United Kingdom | Online form, then biometrics with VFS Global[8] | "flight bookings (unless transiting)" listed as less useful evidence[9] | Usually leave it out |
Two of these wordings are as friendly to a held booking as official text ever gets. Germany and the Netherlands both say outright that they do not want a bought ticket at this stage. If a list you are given for another country says "confirmed" or "paid" instead, take that at face value: a held booking from us may fall short, and buying a refundable fare protects you better.
What does the German Embassy in Lusaka ask for?
The embassy handles short-stay files from people who reside in Zambia and are heading mainly to Germany, Austria, Hungary or Slovenia. If your time is split evenly between several Schengen countries, it also takes the file when your first entry point is in one of those four.[4] It works by appointment only, and the application form is filled online but printed and handed in on paper.[3][4]
On flights, the checklist asks for a flight reservation plus your complete intended itinerary, showing when you enter and leave the Schengen area, and flight details for the whole trip if you will visit more than one country. Then comes the line we wish every mission printed: "You are NOT required to provide proof of purchase of a flight ticket before a visa is issued." The embassy adds that it strongly advises buying only after the visa is granted.[4]
A few other items on the same list matter for planning. Travel insurance must cover at least 30,000 euros for the whole Schengen area. The visa fee of 90 euros is collected in kwacha, in cash or by Visa or Mastercard, and is not refunded if you are refused.[4] Employees bring a contract or employer letter, payslips and NAPSA records; company owners bring PACRA registration and tax forms.[4] Your itinerary dates should line up with all of these.
US visas: why Lusaka applicants now look to Johannesburg
Routine US visa work ended at the Lusaka embassy on 1 August 2026. Its own visa page tells citizens and residents of Zambia to schedule the appointment and pay the fee in Johannesburg.[1] The State Department describes this as a realignment to regional hubs; Lusaka is one of more than twenty African posts on the list, and the embassy itself stays open for other consular work.[2]
Two more points are worth knowing before you plan the trip south. Zambian nationals found eligible for a B1/B2 visa must post a bond; the page cites amounts of up to $15,000 in one paragraph and up to $20,000 in another, and says the officer will explain how to pay only after the interview.[1] Never pay a bond through a third-party site. The bigger issue is Presidential Proclamation 10998. Since 1 January 2026, Zambian citizens have been caught by a partial US suspension: few visitor (B-1/B-2), student or exchange (F, M, J) or immigrant visas are being issued to them, bar limited exceptions.[15] You may still be able to apply, but read the current notice before paying fees or travel costs to Johannesburg.
What about flights for the interview itself? The US does not ask for a booking. The State Department's visitor page warns against buying travel before you have the visa.[14] The trip you do need to organise is the one to Johannesburg. On a Zambian passport you need no South African visa for stays totalling 90 days a year.[10] If you are an expat in Lusaka on, say, an Indian or Pakistani passport, check South Africa's exemption list first; you may need a South African visa just to attend the US interview.

The Netherlands and Sweden share a desk in Lusaka
There is no separate Dutch visa counter in Zambia. The Dutch government's page says residents of Zambia apply for a Netherlands Schengen visa at the Swedish application centre of VFS Global in Lusaka, and that questions or complaints also go to that centre.[5] One case is excluded: a parent seeking to join a Dutch child under 18 has to apply outside Zambia.[5]
Sweden itself no longer decides files in Lusaka. The Swedish Embassy says its Nairobi embassy is now a migration hub for Schengen visas in Africa and handles all applications from Zambia.[7] In practice you still hand in your documents in Lusaka; the decision is made in Kenya, which is one more reason not to buy a non-refundable fare while you wait.
The Dutch tourism checklist is unusually clear on travel. It wants "a reservation in your name" covering your trip into and out of Schengen territory, or some other proof of your plans, and adds: "You do not need a paid travel ticket."[6] That is precisely what a held booking with a checkable PNR is.
UK visitor visas from Lusaka
UK applications are made online first. GOV.UK's centre finder then points Zambia applicants to VFS Global for the biometrics appointment.[8] Look at the centre details on the VFS page you are directed to before you book a slot.
On flights, the UK is the opposite of Germany. Among the documents the Home Office calls less useful for a visit, its guide names "flight bookings (unless transiting)".[9] So for a normal visit we would not spend $9 on a reservation for the UK file. Put the effort into bank statements, employer letters and the reason you will come back to Lusaka. If you are transiting the UK to somewhere else, a booking showing the onward flight does matter.
Living in Lusaka on a foreign passport
Plenty of people applying from Lusaka are not Zambian. Indian engineers, Pakistani and Bangladeshi traders, Nigerian and Zimbabwean professionals and Chinese contractors all apply from here. Residence status is the first thing a mission looks at.
- Germany wants non-Zambians to show Zambian residence (visa, work permit or residence permit) that stays valid for three months or more beyond the date they exit Schengen, backed by the residence card and passport stamp.[4]
- Germany adds a rule for people not coming back to Zambia: prove that your home country, or some third country, will let you in.[4] Your return flight on the reservation should then end where you will actually go.
- The Netherlands says that if you don't live in Zambia, you must apply in your country of residence.[5] A short-term visitor to Lusaka cannot use the Lusaka desk.
- Germany applies a similar rule: it only accepts applicants who reside in Zambia, plus Malawi residents for long-term visas.[3]
Our advice for expats is simple. Renew the Zambian permit before you apply if it will run out within about three months of your return. And make the reservation's return leg land in Lusaka, because that is the story your permit tells.
Flights from Kenneth Kaunda International
LUN is 27 km from the city centre and handles domestic, regional and international traffic.[11] The Zambia Airports Corporation's directory of active airlines includes Emirates, Qatar Airways, Turkish Airlines, Ethiopian Airlines, Kenya Airways, RwandAir, South African Airways, Airlink, Air Tanzania, Uganda Airlines, Air Botswana, Zambia Airways and Proflight Zambia, among others.[12]
That gives you natural one-stop routings for most visa files:
- Germany or Austria: via Dubai on Emirates, Doha on Qatar Airways, Istanbul on Turkish Airlines or Addis Ababa on Ethiopian.
- The Netherlands or Sweden: the same Gulf, Istanbul or Addis connections, or via Nairobi on Kenya Airways.
- The US interview in Johannesburg: South African Airways or Airlink, both on the ZACL directory.[12]
Pick whichever routing you would really fly. A consular officer is reassured by an itinerary that looks like a normal Lusaka trip, not by an exotic one.

Example: a Lusaka accountant visiting a sister in Munich
Take a Zambian accountant in Woodlands whose sister lives in Munich. She wants 16 days in Germany over Christmas and has an embassy appointment on 3 November. With Germany as her sole destination, her file belongs at the German Embassy in Lusaka.[4]
She orders a reservation on 31 October: Lusaka to Munich via Dubai, out on 18 December, back on 3 January. Her insurance runs for exactly those dates, her employer letter grants the same leave, and her sister's invitation mentions the same period. On the form she calls the flight a reservation, because that is what it is. Once the visa arrives she purchases proper tickets on those dates; if not, she has lost $9 rather than a non-refundable fare.
Example: an Indian engineer in Lusaka going to Amsterdam
Now picture an Indian civil engineer on a Zambian employment permit, invited to a five-day trade event in Amsterdam. He applies at the Swedish VFS centre in Lusaka, because the Netherlands handles Zambia residents there.[5] His permit expires in February and the trip is in late January, so before anything else he renews the permit. That one step heads off a frequent expat snag.
His reservation shows Lusaka to Amsterdam via Nairobi and straight back to Lusaka, not on to India, since his life and job are in Zambia. The Dutch checklist asks only for a reservation in his name, and says a paid ticket is not needed.[6]

When should you order it?
Close to the appointment, not when you first plan the trip. Expect a held booking to survive for up to 2 weeks; the carrier sets the precise period, and some fares give less. For Lusaka this matters more than usual: Schengen decisions usually come within 15 days but may take up to 45, and Swedish files from Zambia are now decided in Nairobi.[13][7] Our habit: order it two or three days ahead of handing in the file. If the decision drags on and the embassy asks for updated travel plans, order a new one then.
Schengen applications can go in up to six months ahead and should go in at least 15 days before travel.[13] German appointments in Lusaka are limited, so secure the slot early and the reservation late.
What to avoid in Lusaka
- Buying a non-refundable fare before the decision. Germany explicitly tells you not to.[4]
- Going to the wrong desk, such as looking for a Dutch counter that does not exist in Zambia.
- Letting a work permit lapse during or soon after the trip.
- Edited PDFs or "free" generators. A PNR the airline's own site cannot find will count against you.
- Dates that disagree across flight, insurance, leave letter and invitation.
Lusaka FAQ
Can I still have my US visa interview in Lusaka?
Not for routine visas. The US Embassy in Lusaka says that from 1 August 2026, citizens and residents of Zambia schedule the appointment and pay the fee in Johannesburg. Holders of Zambian passports may spend up to 90 days a year in South Africa visa-free, so the trip south is straightforward. Before paying, though, read the notice on the partial suspension of visitor, student and immigrant visas for Zambian nationals that began on 1 January 2026.
Does the German Embassy in Lusaka accept a flight reservation?
Yes. Its Schengen checklist asks for a flight reservation and full itinerary, and states that you are not required to show proof of purchase of a ticket before the visa is issued. It also advises buying only after approval. A held booking with a real PNR, in your name and on your planned dates, is what that wording describes.
Which desk in Zambia handles Netherlands Schengen visas?
At the Swedish application centre of VFS Global in Lusaka, according to the Netherlands government. Questions and complaints about the application also go there. Parents joining a Dutch child under 18 are the exception and must apply abroad. The Dutch checklist asks for a reservation and says a paid ticket is not needed.
Is there a DummyTicketPrice office in Lusaka?
No. Everything happens on our website. Enter the journey and names, settle $9 a head by card, and the PDF lands in your inbox, normally within 10 minutes. If you need help, our WhatsApp and email support are listed at the foot of every page. Printing at home or a Cairo Road copy shop is fine.
I am an expat in Lusaka. What must my residence permit show?
Germany looks for Zambian residence papers that remain valid three months past your Schengen exit, with the card and passport stamp to prove it. Other countries set their own rules, so read your checklist. If your permit runs out soon, renew it before applying, and make your return flight end in Lusaka.
Does a UK visit application from Lusaka need a flight booking?
Usually not. For a visit, the Home Office gives flight bookings little weight; transit is the exception. Spend the time on financial documents and proof of your ties to Zambia instead. If you are passing through the UK to a third country, show the onward booking, because that one is relevant.
How long will my reservation last?
Up to 2 weeks, with the exact time set by the airline and sometimes shorter. Buy it a few days ahead of the appointment and it should still be live while officers review the file. When the appointment shifts or the decision drags, buy a replacement near the new date instead of trusting an old PNR.
Book your Lusaka reservation
Online only. $9 a head, and the PNR shows on the airline's website.
Please note: our document is a held booking rather than a paid fare, and check-in staff will not accept it for travel. It cannot guarantee any visa; the embassy decides. Describe it honestly on every form.
