Serbia sits outside the Schengen area and runs its own visa system, so the rules about flights are not the ones you may know from a French or German application. The short version: Serbia's official visa list never names a flight ticket, but it does ask for evidence that you will leave, and border police can ask for a return ticket on arrival. This guide walks through who needs a Serbian visa, what the Ministry of Foreign Affairs actually publishes, the shortcut for people who already hold a Schengen, UK or US visa, and where a held reservation fits. Each official point links to its source, listed at the end.
Serbia visa key facts for 2026
| Question | Official answer |
|---|---|
| Do Indian passport holders need a visa? | Yes. The Ministry's India entry reads "Visas required" for ordinary passports; diplomatic and official passports are exempt for up to 90 days.[1] |
| Is there a shortcut? | Holders of a valid Schengen, UK or US visa, or a residence permit from the Schengen area, EU or USA, may enter without a Serbian visa for up to 90 days in 180, but not past the expiry of that visa or permit.[4] |
| Short-stay visa type | Visa C, up to 90 days in any 180-day period.[2] |
| Does the visa list mention flights? | No ticket is named. Applicants must show funds for the stay "and for return", plus evidence of intent to leave before the visa expires.[2] |
| What can border police ask for? | "A return flight ticket, a proof of paid hotel booking or a certificate verifying the private residence address", plus funds of 50 euros per day.[3] |
| Can I apply online? | Yes. Since 23 April 2025 Serbia issues Digital Travel Authorizations through welcometoserbia.gov.rs, alongside visa stickers from its missions.[2][5] |
| Insurance | Required for a visa; for entry, the Ministry recommends cover of at least 20,000 euros.[2][3] |
Who needs a visa for Serbia?
If you hold an ordinary Indian passport and no other qualifying visa, you need one. The Serbian Ministry of Foreign Affairs keeps a country-by-country table, and the India row is brief: diplomatic and official passports travel visa-free for up to 90 days, while ordinary passports need visas.[1]
The rules are different for many other nationalities. Some can visit visa-free, some have tighter limits. If you are reading this with a passport from Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, the Philippines or anywhere else, open the same table, pick your country and read your own row before planning anything.[1]
Your country of residence matters too. An Indian living in Dubai or Riyadh is still assessed on an Indian passport, but may be able to apply at a Serbian mission in the Gulf rather than travelling home. A UK or Schengen residence permit can remove the need for a visa altogether, which brings us to the shortcut.
Can you enter Serbia with a Schengen, UK or US visa?
Yes, and for many Indian travellers this is the easiest route. The Ministry's frequently asked questions say that holders of foreign passports with a valid visa or residence permit for the Schengen area, the EU or the USA, or a valid UK visa, may enter, transit or stay in Serbia without applying for a Serbian visa. The limit is 90 days within 180 days, and never beyond the date the qualifying visa or permit expires.[4]
Three practical points follow from that wording.
- The visa must still be valid on every day you are in Serbia. Say your Schengen visa ends on 20 May. Your Serbian stay must end by then too, even if you have used only a week of your 90 days.
- The Ministry's text does not say the visa must be multiple-entry or already used. That is looser than Albania, which asks for both. Do check the entries on your Schengen visa, though, for a different reason, explained next.
- You still meet the normal border conditions. Visa-free entry does not switch off the officer's right to ask about money, accommodation or your way out.[3]
Watch your Schengen entries: Serbia is outside Schengen. If you fly Paris to Belgrade on a single-entry Schengen visa, that entry is spent. You could not return to Paris, Vienna or Budapest afterwards on the same sticker. Plan the order of your trip, or apply for the entries you actually need.
Our guide to multiple-entry visas explains how to show a multi-stop plan when you ask for more than one entry, and booking flights across several Schengen countries covers routing inside the area.
What does Serbia's official visa list say about flights?
Nothing directly, which surprises people. The Ministry's visa requirements page lists the documents for a Visa C: the online application form, a passport valid at least 90 days past your departure with two blank pages, a 3.5 x 4.5 cm photo, the fee, proof of the purpose of the trip, travel medical insurance and evidence of funds.[2] For tourism, the purpose document is a travel agency voucher; for a private visit, a certified invitation letter; for business, a company invitation.[2]
The flight question hides inside two phrases. Funds must cover the stay "and for return to the country of origin or place of usual residence". And the consulate can ask for other evidence to verify your intent to leave Serbia before the visa expires.[2] A return flight booking is the most natural way to show both. It tells the officer the date you leave and that the cost of getting home is accounted for.
So nothing in the Ministry's text asks for a paid ticket, and nothing forbids one. A verifiable return reservation in your name answers the "intent to leave" point honestly without committing you to a non-refundable fare before you know the outcome. If the mission handling your file hands you a written checklist that says "confirmed" or "paid" ticket, follow that list instead. The paper in your hand from the mission outranks a general web page.
Will Serbian border police check your return ticket?
They can. The Ministry's general entry requirements say border authorities may request a return flight ticket, proof of a paid hotel booking, or a certificate showing a private address where you will stay.[3] The same page sets sufficient funds at 50 euros per day of stay, proved by cash or a bank statement, and recommends health insurance covering at least 20,000 euros.[3]
Notice the word "may". It is a power, not a routine step for every passenger. Before you ever meet that officer, though, you meet an airline agent. Airlines check that each passenger meets the destination's entry rules before issuing a boarding pass, and a passenger relying on the Schengen shortcut is exactly the kind of case they look at closely.
Here is the difference that matters. For the visa application, a held reservation is evidence of a plan. At the border, an officer asking for a "return flight ticket" is asking how you are leaving now, at the end of a real trip. By then you should hold your actual paid ticket home. Don't arrive in Serbia relying on a reservation made for a visa file weeks ago; it will usually have lapsed by then anyway. Read more in check-in versus immigration onward-ticket checks.

Your name, your dates, and a PNR the airline's site will find. ₹699 / $9 per traveller.
How do you apply for a Serbian visa from India?
There are two doors. You can apply in person at a Serbian diplomatic mission abroad, which for most Indian residents means the Embassy of Serbia in New Delhi.[2][6] Or you can apply online through the government's Welcome to Serbia portal, which offers electronic applications for C and D visas.[5] Since 23 April 2025 Serbia has issued Digital Travel Authorizations as well as visa stickers; to use the online route you need a registered account on the government's eID system.[2]
The Ministry pages we read in October 2026 did not state a visa fee or a standard processing time. Ask the Embassy directly, or read the figures shown in the portal before you submit, and give yourself several weeks. We would not book anything firm until you know how long your mission is actually taking.
Whichever door you use, the flight evidence is the same: a return booking that matches the dates on your form, your hotel voucher and your insurance.
Reservation or paid ticket: which fits each stage?
| Stage | What the official text says | Does a held reservation fit? |
|---|---|---|
| Visa C application at the Embassy | Funds for the stay and return; evidence of intent to leave before expiry[2] | Yes, as evidence of your planned exit, unless your mission's own checklist demands a paid ticket |
| Online application through the portal | Same visa rules; upload documents online[2][5] | Yes, upload a clear PDF of the reservation with the PNR visible |
| Visa-free entry on a Schengen, UK or US visa | No application; normal entry conditions still apply[3][4] | Not for the trip itself. Fly with your paid ticket out of Serbia |
| Arrival at the border | Officers may ask for a return flight ticket[3] | No. By travel day you should hold the real ticket |
| Airline check-in in India or the Gulf | Airline applies entry rules for your nationality | No. Check-in staff look for your actual onward or return booking |
The pattern is simple. A reservation helps before the decision, when buying a ticket would be a gamble. Once the visa is issued, or if you are entering visa-free, buy the ticket you will actually fly.
Routes to Belgrade and transit visas on the way
There is no single routing from India to Serbia that suits everyone, and schedules change by season, so check current flights on the airlines' own sites. Most itineraries involve one connection, typically through a Gulf hub, Istanbul or a European airport. The connection point matters more than people expect.
- Connecting inside the Schengen area: if your change of plane is at Frankfurt, Vienna or Zurich, check whether your nationality needs an airport transit visa there, and whether your connection keeps you airside. Leaving the airport, changing terminals that involve passport control, or holding separate bookings may mean you need a Schengen visa just to pass through. Our transit visa guide sets out the rules by country.
- Connecting through the Gulf or Turkey: an airside connection on one booking is the cleanest option. If you split the trip into two bookings, you may need to collect bags and enter the country, which brings its own visa question.
- Overland from neighbouring countries: if your plan is Budapest to Belgrade by train, or a bus from Sarajevo, that leg is your exit or entry evidence instead of a flight. See proof of onward travel by bus, ferry or train.
Your reservation should show the routing you will really use. A file showing Delhi to Belgrade via Istanbul, while your covering letter talks about arriving by train from Budapest, invites questions you don't need.
What should your Serbia flight reservation show?
- Your name exactly as printed in the passport, surname and given names in the right fields.
- Arrival in Serbia and departure from Serbia on the dates in your application, or the arrival and departure of the wider trip if Serbia is one stop of several.
- A stay that fits the visa you request, within 90 days in 180, and for the shortcut route, ending before your Schengen, UK or US visa expires.[4]
- Dates that agree with the travel agency voucher or invitation letter, the hotel bookings and the insurance period.
- Every traveller, including children, on one reservation or on matching reservations.
- A booking reference (PNR) and airline name so the record can be found on the airline's site.
Funds are counted against the length of stay too. At 50 euros per day, a 10-day visit implies at least 500 euros of available money for border purposes.[3] If your reservation shows a three-week stay, your bank statement should support three weeks.
Preparing the flight side of a Serbia application
Confirm you need a visa at all. A valid Schengen, UK or US visa may let you skip it.
Pick arrival and departure days, then book refundable hotels for exactly those nights.
Book a day or two before your appointment or online submission, so the hold is live when you file.
On the carrier's "Manage booking" screen, type the PNR with your surname and compare every name and date.
Use the visa's validity dates, then carry that ticket for check-in and the border.
On step three: a hold from us remains usable for at most two weeks, and exactly how long is the airline's call. Hence the timing. Picture an Embassy slot on 21 November: reserve on the 19th or 20th, and leave October alone. The booking timing guide goes into more detail, and how long a reservation lasts explains why holds expire.
Mistakes that weaken a Serbia file
- Using a single-entry Schengen visa for a side trip to Belgrade and then trying to go back into Schengen.
- Staying past the expiry of the visa that let you in visa-free.
- A return date that doesn't match the voucher, invitation or hotel.
- Thin funds for the length of stay shown on the booking.
- A PDF from a "ticket generator" with a booking code no airline recognises. Officers and airline staff can look a PNR up, and an invented one is a false document.
- Arriving with only an old reservation instead of a paid ticket out.
If you are unsure whether a reservation is the right tool for your situation at all, our honest list of when not to use a dummy ticket is worth two minutes.
Serbia visa and flight reservation: common questions
Do I need a flight ticket to apply for a Serbian visa?
The Ministry's document list doesn't name one. It asks for funds covering your stay and return, and lets the consulate request evidence that you will leave before the visa ends. A verifiable return reservation covers that. If the Embassy gives you a written checklist asking for a paid ticket, follow the checklist.
Can I visit Serbia on my Schengen visa?
Yes, if it is valid. Holders of a valid Schengen, UK or US visa, or certain residence permits, may stay up to 90 days in 180 without a Serbian visa, but not beyond the qualifying visa's expiry. Remember that leaving Schengen for Serbia uses one of your Schengen entries.
Does the Schengen visa need to be multiple-entry for Serbia?
The Ministry's published wording only says "valid". It does not require multiple entries or prior use, unlike Albania's rule. The catch is on the Schengen side: a single-entry visa is used up when you leave for Serbia, so you could not return to a Schengen country on it.
How much money must I show at the Serbian border?
The Ministry treats 50 euros per day of stay as sufficient, shown by cash or a bank statement. Officers may also ask for a return flight ticket and a paid hotel booking or proof of a private address. Carry printouts, because phone batteries and airport Wi-Fi are not reliable at passport control.
Can I apply for a Serbian visa online?
Yes. The government's Welcome to Serbia portal accepts electronic applications for C and D visas, and since 23 April 2025 Serbia issues Digital Travel Authorizations. You need an account on the eID system. Missions abroad, including the Embassy in New Delhi, still accept applications in person.
Will my reservation still be live when the visa is decided?
Possibly not. Each hold we create can last as long as a fortnight, though the carrier fixes its real end date. The test is whether it is real and live on the day you file. After approval, buy the ticket you will actually fly, ideally after checking the visa's dates.
I live in the UAE. Does my residence visa let me into Serbia?
A UAE residence permit is not on the Ministry's exemption list, which covers Schengen, EU, US and UK visas and Schengen, EU or US residence permits. On an Indian passport with only UAE residence, expect to need a Serbian visa. Our guide for Gulf-based Indians covers applying from the Gulf.
Getting a Serbia reservation, and the price
Our Serbia reservation carries a live PNR, issued in the passport spelling you give, for whichever dates and airports you choose: usually a return between your home city and Belgrade, or a multi-city plan when Serbia is one stop in the Balkans. Anyone can pull it up on the carrier's site. It stays a held booking, unpaid, and nobody boards on it.
Each traveller pays once, whether the booking is one way or return, and a multi-city plan is charged for every pair of legs. Indian customers settle through Razorpay using UPI, a card or netbanking. Expect the PDF in roughly 10 minutes. Track an order on the order tracking page, see full pricing, or read how a flight reservation for visa differs from a refundable fare. If your hotel nights need covering too, there is a hotel booking service priced per stay.

Names and dates exactly as you enter them, checkable on the airline's site.
For neighbouring countries, see our guides to Montenegro, North Macedonia, Albania and Bosnia and Herzegovina. For the Schengen side of a combined trip, start with the Schengen visa guide or the Croatia guide. A wider table lives on flight reservation requirements by country, and travellers without a return plan should read about the onward ticket.
Honesty first: book a reservation that reflects the trip you intend to take, and describe it as a reservation. No document guarantees a visa or entry; the Embassy and Serbian border police decide.
