Albania is one of the few countries whose official visa list uses the exact phrase you are probably searching for: a "round-trip ticket booking". That is booking, not purchase. It is also one of the more generous neighbours for people who already travel a lot, because a used multiple-entry Schengen, UK or US visa can replace an Albanian one. This guide covers both routes for Indian passport holders, quotes what the Albanian Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs publishes, and explains where a held reservation is the right document and where you need a paid fare. One caveat up front: the Ministry's current website blocked automated access in October 2026, so we quote the Ministry's own archived pages and link the live ones for you to check.[3]

Do Indian passport holders need a visa for Albania?
An ordinary Indian passport on its own is not on Albania's visa-free list in the Ministry material we could read, so plan for a visa unless you meet one of the conditions below. Holders of Indian diplomatic and service passports are a separate case.
Albania has sometimes opened seasonal visa-free windows for particular nationalities. The Ministry's archived regime page, for example, shows a 2024 window for Saudi, Bahraini, Omani, Qatari and Thai citizens and a later one for Indonesia.[2] We found no such window for Indian citizens on an official page in October 2026. If you read about one elsewhere, verify it on the Ministry's live visa regime page before you rely on it.
When can you enter Albania without an Albanian visa?
The Ministry lists four main groups who may enter and stay for up to 90 days in 180 without an Albanian visa:[1][2]
- Schengen visa holders whose visa is valid, multiple-entry and has already been used in a Schengen state; or anyone with a valid Schengen residence permit.
- US or UK visa holders whose visa is valid, multiple-entry and already used in the issuing country; or holders of a US or UK residence permit.
- People who can enter Schengen without a visa because of their nationality.
- UAE long-term residents with a 10-year residence permit valid for at least one year from entry (listed on the archived regime page).[2]
Read the Schengen and US/UK conditions slowly, because each has three parts. Valid, multiple-entry and used. A fresh single-entry Schengen visa that you have not yet travelled on does not qualify. Neither does a brand-new US B1/B2 visa if you have never entered the United States on it.
Two illustrations. Say you hold a two-year multiple-entry Schengen visa and visited Italy on it last spring, and now want five days in Tirana and Berat. Your visa is valid, multiple-entry and used, so the exemption applies. Now say a friend received a first Schengen visa last week, single entry and untouched. That friend needs an Albanian visa, or a different order of travel.
Passport rules apply to visa-free travellers too: valid at least three months after the day you leave Albania, and issued within the previous ten years.[2]
What does the Albanian checklist say about flight tickets?
For a tourist visa, the Ministry lists four documents on top of the general ones. The first is a "Document of round-trip ticket booking". The others are a hotel booking or other accommodation details, proof of sufficient income through bank statements, and proof of employment in your country of birth or residence, or other evidence that you will return.[1]
The general documents for every C and D visa are the online application form (printed and signed), one photo no older than six months, a copy of a passport valid three months beyond the visa, travel health insurance for the visa's duration and, for children under 18, parental consent.[1]
The key word is "booking". The Ministry does not ask for a purchased or issued ticket for a tourist visa; it asks for a document showing a round-trip booking. A genuine reservation held in the airline's system, in your name, with a booking reference you can look up, fits that description. It shows the officer the day you arrive, the day you leave, and that the trip is round, not open-ended.
Other visa types do not mention flights at all. A business visa leans on the invitation and company papers; a visa for cultural or sports reasons asks for funds for your stay "and return to their country of origin".[1] Even so, including a return reservation keeps the file consistent.

How the Albanian e-visa process works, step by step
Albania runs its visa applications online through the e-visa portal, with documents uploaded first and originals shown later.[1][4] The Ministry describes two phases.
Fill in the form and upload every document, including the round-trip booking.
You get "application has been accepted" with the fee to pay, a request for a missing document, or a refusal with reasons.
Amounts follow reciprocity under Decision No. 569 of 3 October 2018; children up to six are exempt.
Bring your passport, every original you uploaded, the signed form and the payment invoice.
All of that comes from the Ministry's visa application page.[1] Two details are worth underlining. First, the Ministry says a visa is issued up to 15 days from the acceptance of the application, exceptionally up to 30. The clock starts at acceptance, not at upload. Second, you bring the originals of what you uploaded. If you uploaded a reservation PDF, have the same PDF printed, and expect that the booking you uploaded may no longer be live on collection day. That is normal for a hold, as long as it was genuine when you filed.
Applicants who applied for an Albanian visa within the previous 59 months are among those excused from appearing in person.[1]
Applying from Dubai, Riyadh or another country you live in
You may apply somewhere other than your country of birth if you have lived there for more than 12 months. You then add a copy of your residence permit, valid for at least three months beyond the end of the visa you request.[1]
For many Indians in Dubai or Abu Dhabi the bigger question is whether they need to apply at all. A 10-year UAE residence permit with a year or more left was listed on the Ministry's archived regime page as a visa-free route.[2] A standard two- or three-year UAE residence was not. The Ministry is clear that holding a visa does not guarantee entry.[1] That line is the reason we always say: a reservation is for the file, a paid ticket is for the journey. Our onward versus return ticket guide explains how airlines read the two.
Routes to Tirana and what to check on the way
Tirana International Airport is the main gateway, and many visitors also cross by road from Montenegro, North Macedonia, Kosovo or Greece, or by ferry from Italy. From India there is normally at least one connection. Before you reserve anything, decide:
- Where you connect. If the change of planes is at a Schengen airport, check airport transit visa rules for your passport and stay airside on one booking. Our transit visa guide has the detail.
- Whether Albania is the whole trip. Many itineraries combine Albania with Montenegro or Greece. Then the booking should enter the region at one point and leave at another, and you should check each country's entry rule separately.
- Whether a ferry or bus is part of it. An Italy-to-Durrës ferry or a Tirana-to-Skopje bus can be your entry or exit evidence. See onward travel by bus, ferry or train.
Make the booking match the rest of the file
- Same spelling as the passport for every name.
- Arrival and departure dates that match the online form and the hotel booking night for night.
- Insurance covering the whole visa period, as the Ministry asks.[1]
- Bank statements that make the trip length plausible.
- Proof of employment or other ties showing you will go home.[1]
- A PNR you have checked on the airline's "Manage booking" page using your surname.
Timing matters because uploads happen before the consul's check. A hold we issue survives a fortnight at most, and the carrier picks the true expiry, so reserve a day or two before you upload rather than a month ahead. If the consul asks for a document correction later, a fresh booking with the same dates is easy to supply. What happens after a refusal?
If the consul refuses, you receive a standard refusal message with an explanation. You may reapply only after the appeal process ends or three months after receiving the decision.[1] That three-month wait is a strong reason not to rush an incomplete file. A refusal over a missing employment letter costs you a whole season. Flight-related problems we would avoid are the usual ones: dates that clash with the hotel, a one-way booking with no return, or a PDF whose booking code no airline can find.
Albania visa and flight booking: your questions
Does Albania accept a flight reservation instead of a ticket?
For a tourist visa, the Ministry's list asks for a "document of round-trip ticket booking", not a purchased ticket. A genuine reservation in your name, with a booking reference the airline recognises, matches that wording. Buy the real ticket after the visa is issued, because a reservation cannot be used to fly.
Can I enter Albania with my Schengen visa?
Only if it is valid, multiple-entry and already used in a Schengen country, or if you hold a Schengen residence permit. A single-entry visa, or a multiple-entry one you have not travelled on yet, does not qualify. The same "used" condition applies to US and UK visas.
How long does an Albanian visa take?
The Ministry says up to 15 days from acceptance of the application, and up to 30 days in exceptional cases. Acceptance follows the consul's first review of your upload, so allow extra time for that step and for any request to add documents.
How much is the Albania visa fee for Indians?
The Ministry says fees follow reciprocity under Decision No. 569 of 3 October 2018 and are waived for children up to six. It did not publish an amount on the pages we could read. The portal shows the fee when your application is accepted, before you pay.
I live in Dubai. Can I visit Albania without a visa?
The archived Ministry list included holders of a 10-year UAE residence permit valid at least a year from entry. Ordinary UAE residence permits were not listed. If you have a used multiple-entry Schengen, UK or US visa, that route also works. Otherwise apply online and state your UAE residence.
Do I need to show a return ticket on arrival in Tirana?
The Ministry warns that a visa does not guarantee entry, and border officers can ask about your plans. Carry your paid return or onward ticket, accommodation details and evidence of funds. A reservation made weeks earlier for the visa file is not a substitute for the ticket you will fly on.
Can I combine Albania and Montenegro in one booking?
Yes. An open-jaw reservation, flying into Tirana and out of Podgorica, or the reverse, shows the route clearly. Each country has its own entry rules, so check both, and show the road leg in your itinerary. Our Montenegro guide covers that side.
