North Macedonia has the most precise visa wording in the region, and the shortest visa-free window. Its Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade asks applicants to prove their "means of transport and the intention to return", and it lets holders of certain foreign visas visit for only 15 days per entry. Both details shape how you book flights. This guide covers who needs a visa, the Schengen, British, American and Canadian visa routes (including a decision that runs only to 31 December 2026), what the document list really asks for, and when a held reservation is the right fit. Sources are numbered at the end.

Who needs a visa for North Macedonia?
EU citizens and nationals of Schengen states do not; they can even enter with a national identity card.[1] Most other travellers either need a visa or must qualify through a visa or residence permit issued elsewhere.
For Indian passport holders, plan on needing either a visa or one of the substitutions below. The Ministry's country-by-country tool ("Do you need a visa?") is interactive, and we could not load the India entry in October 2026, so check your own nationality there before applying.[4] In practice, many Indian visitors travel on a Schengen, UK, US or Canadian visa they already hold rather than applying separately.
Can a Schengen, UK, US or Canadian visa replace a Macedonian one?
Yes, with conditions that are tighter than in Serbia or Montenegro. There are three separate routes on the Ministry's entry page.[1]
Route 1: a multiple-entry Schengen visa
You need a Schengen type C visa that is multiple-entry and stays valid for at least five days after your planned stay in North Macedonia ends. Each visit may last up to 15 days, with no more than 90 days in any 180.[1] Single-entry Schengen visas do not count, and neither does a visa ending the day after you leave Skopje.
Route 2: a multiple-entry British, American or Canadian visa
The government adopted a decision temporarily abolishing short-stay visas for third-country nationals holding a valid multiple-entry British, American or Canadian visa "inserted in the passport". The stay may be up to 15 days, and the visa must stay valid five days longer than the planned stay. The decision is valid from 1 January 2026 to 31 December 2026.[1] "Inserted in the passport" matters: a visa that exists only digitally, or a separate residence card, is not what this route describes.
Route 3: residence in the EU or Schengen area
Temporary or permanent residence in an EU member state or a Schengen country gives up to 15 days per entry, within 90 in 180.[1]
Worked dates: say your multiple-entry Schengen visa expires on 30 September. To enter on it, your stay in North Macedonia must end by 25 September, five days earlier. Arrive on 12 September and you can stay until the 25th, inside the 15-day limit too.
Because the five-day buffer and 15-day cap are both strict, your reservation dates here do real work. They are what an airline agent or border officer compares with the expiry date on your other visa.
What North Macedonia's visa rules say about flights
The Ministry's application procedure lists the documents that go with every visa application:[2]
- a passport valid at least three months longer than the visa, issued within the last 10 years, with two empty pages, plus one 35 x 45 mm photograph;
- proof of valid travel medical insurance;
- proof of fees paid;
- documents proving the purpose of the visit, secured accommodation, means of subsistence for the stay and the return or onward journey, and "means of transport and the intention to return to the country of origin or the intention to travel to a third country".
That last phrase is the flight requirement. It asks you to show how you will travel and that you plan to go home or on to another country. It does not say "paid ticket", "issued ticket" or "confirmed ticket". A verifiable return reservation addresses both halves at once: the means of transport (named flights) and the intention to return (a dated flight home).
The separate page on visa types gives a shorter list for a C visa: travel document, insurance from an insurer in your country of residence, a notarised guarantee or invitation letter from a person or company in North Macedonia, proof of sufficient funds such as a credit card or bank statement, a colour photo, proof of fee payment and the completed form.[3] It does not name flights, but the procedure page's transport requirement still applies. Include the reservation.
Note the invitation point. Unlike Albania's tourist route, the Macedonian C list expects a notarised letter of guarantee or an invitation from someone in the country.[3] A flight reservation cannot stand in for that, so sort the invitation out first.

When should you apply and book?
The application goes to the competent North Macedonian diplomatic or consular mission, resident or non-resident, between six months and 15 days before the trip starts. It is lodged in person; a proxy is allowed only for disabled applicants or well-known persons, and a parent or guardian lodges a minor's application.[2]
We'd treat the 15-day minimum as an absolute floor, not a target. If your appointment is set, reserve the flights a day or two before it. Our bookings hold for no longer than two weeks, the precise lapse date being up to the airline, so reserving at the last sensible moment means the PNR is live on the day the officer looks. Say your appointment is on 3 November for a trip starting 1 December: reserve on 1 or 2 November, with travel dates of 1 to 10 December.
If the visa is refused, the Ministry says you can appeal within eight days of receiving the decision to the State Commission for second-instance decisions, in writing and in Macedonian Cyrillic, with an administrative fee. The appeal does not pause the decision.[2] Eight days is short. Keep copies of everything you submitted.

If you are doing a loop through the Balkans on one Schengen visa, North Macedonia is usually the country that sets the tightest limit. Build the itinerary around its 15 days, and around the five-day buffer before your Schengen visa ends.
Onward and return checks when you fly
Skopje International Airport is the main entry point by air, with Ohrid also handling international flights, and many travellers arrive by road from Serbia, Kosovo, Albania, Greece or Bulgaria. Whichever way you come, the person who checks your documents first is usually the airline or bus operator.
For anyone entering on a Schengen, UK, US or Canadian visa, expect check-in staff to look at three things: that the visa is multiple-entry, that it will still be valid five days after you leave, and that your trip is no longer than 15 days. The easiest way to prove the last two is a paid ticket out of the country. A reservation you made for a visa file is not that ticket; it has probably expired and was never meant to be flown. Leaving North Macedonia by bus to Sofia or Thessaloniki? That counts as onward travel too. Keep the bus booking printed, and read proof of onward travel by bus, ferry or train.
Transit through North Macedonia and on the way there
North Macedonia issues an airport transit visa (A) and a C visa that also covers transit of up to five days.[3] If your passport needs a visa and you are crossing by road to another country, the transit C visa is the relevant one, and your onward booking out of the country becomes the key evidence.

Building the flight part of the file
- Check which route you are on: visa, Schengen substitution, UK/US/Canada substitution or EU residence.
- Fix the dates with the 15-day cap and five-day buffer in mind if you rely on another visa.
- Arrange the invitation or guarantee letter and have it notarised if you apply for a visa.
- Book accommodation and insurance for exactly those dates.
- Reserve the flights close to your appointment and check the PNR on the airline's "Manage booking" page.
- Lodge the application in person at least 15 days before travel.
- After approval, buy the ticket you will fly on, within the visa's dates.

North Macedonia visa and flights: frequent questions
Is a flight reservation enough for a North Macedonia visa?
The Ministry asks for documents proving your means of transport and your intention to return or travel on. It does not say the ticket must be paid. A verifiable return reservation in your name shows both. If the mission handling your file asks for a paid ticket in writing, a held reservation may not satisfy it.
Can I enter North Macedonia on a single-entry Schengen visa?
No. The rule covers multiple-entry Schengen type C visas valid at least five days beyond your stay. A single-entry visa, even a valid one, does not qualify. You would need a Macedonian visa, or a different qualifying visa or residence permit.
Does my US visa let me into North Macedonia?
Under a temporary decision valid from 1 January to 31 December 2026, a multiple-entry American, British or Canadian visa inserted in your passport allows a stay of up to 15 days, if it stays valid five days longer than your trip. Check whether the decision is extended before travelling in 2027.
How early can I apply for a North Macedonia visa?
Between six months and 15 days ahead of departure, lodged in person at the competent mission. Fifteen days is the legal minimum, not a comfortable margin, so apply earlier, and reserve flights a day or two before your appointment.
What is the North Macedonia visa fee?
The Ministry lists 60 euros for a short-stay or transit C visa, and 35 euros for children aged 6 to 12. A long-stay D visa costs 70 euros. Pay exactly as the mission tells you and keep the proof, which is itself one of the required documents.
How long can I stay on my Schengen visa?
Up to 15 days on each entry, with no more than 90 days in any 180-day period. Your Schengen visa must remain valid at least five days after you leave. Plan the return or onward flight with both limits in mind.
Can I appeal a refusal?
Yes, within eight days of receiving the decision, to the State Commission that handles second-instance administrative decisions. The appeal is written in Macedonian Cyrillic and carries a fee, and it does not suspend the refusal. Depending on the reason, fixing the gap and reapplying may be quicker.
