Dummy Ticket for Bosnia and Herzegovina Visa (2026): Schengen Route, Ticket Wording and Money Rules

For most Indian travellers, the Bosnia and Herzegovina question is really a Schengen question. Anyone whose passport carries a current Schengen visa marked for multiple entries, or who has a residence permit from a Schengen state, an EU member state or the United States, the Embassy of India in Budapest says you can enter Bosnia and Herzegovina without a separate visa.^[2] If you do not, you apply for a Bosnian visa before travelling, and that is where the flight wording becomes important, because some Bosnian missions ask for a copy of a return air ticket rather than a reservation. Here is what the official pages say and how to handle each case honestly.

Bosnia and Herzegovina visa key facts

Entering Bosnia on a Schengen, EU or US visa or permit

This is the easiest route, and the one we would check first. The Embassy of India in Budapest, which publishes advice for Indians visiting Bosnia and Herzegovina, says Indian nationals holding a valid multiple-entry Schengen visa, or a valid residence permit from a Schengen state, an EU member state or the United States, may enter, transit and stay without a separate Bosnian visa.^[2]

Three details make or break it:

• Multiple entry matters. A single-entry Schengen visa does not qualify under that wording. Look at the "Number of entries" field on the sticker: it should say "MULT".
• The visa must still be valid while you are in Bosnia. The Oslo embassy page describes stays of up to 30 days for holders of qualifying visas and permits.^[3] Keep your Bosnian days well inside both limits.
• A US or UK visa is a different matter. The Budapest page names US residence permits, not US or UK visas. If you hold only a US or UK visa, check with a Bosnian mission before you travel.

Picture this: a German-issued Schengen visa, valid for two years with MULT entries, and a holiday covering Croatia and Bosnia. You fly into Zagreb, take the road to Mostar and Sarajevo for five days, then fly home from Sarajevo. No Bosnian visa is needed on those facts. What you should carry is a believable exit plan and money for the stay, because border officers can ask for both.

Applying for a Bosnian visa: what the missions ask for

If the Schengen route does not apply, you need a Bosnian short-stay visa (type C) from a BiH embassy or consulate before travelling.^[2] Each mission publishes its own document list, and they are not identical. Two that we could read in October 2026 show the range:

• BiH Embassy in Doha (for Qatar residents): passport, application form, a copy of the Qatar ID, a 35×45 mm photo, "Fotokopija povratne avio-karte" (a photocopy of the return air ticket), and travel insurance of 30,000 EUR or 50,000 USD. For tourism it also lists paid travel documentation, a bank statement and the insurance. Fee for a type C visa: 60 EUR. Processing: 5 to 7 days, and 30 to 40 days for certain nationalities.^[4]
• BiH Consulate General in Chicago: passport, one photo, "Copy of round trip ticket or itinerary", and for tourists a travel agency voucher stating the trip has been paid in full plus the last bank statement. Fees of $35 single and $65 multiple entry.^[5]

The Foreign Ministry adds a figure that applies across the board: foreigners need KM 150 for each day of the intended stay, or the equivalent in a convertible currency.^[1] For a seven-day trip that is KM 1,050, so your bank statement should comfortably cover it.

Reservation or paid ticket: what the wording means for you

This is the part where we need to be straight with you. Bosnian mission lists use wording that is stricter than many Schengen checklists.

Where the wording says "ticket" and nothing else, the safest route is to email the mission and ask whether a confirmed reservation is accepted. If they say no, pick a refundable fare, and check what cancelling would cost before paying. Where "itinerary" is offered, a genuine reservation with a PNR does the job without risking a fare before the decision.

Which Bosnia route suits your situation?

Consider a couple living in Bengaluru. One holds a multiple-entry French visa and the other a single-entry one from the same trip. Only the first can rely on the Schengen route; the second needs to check with a Bosnian mission or apply for a visa. Families often miss this because they assume everyone's sticker is the same.

Where do Indian residents apply?

Apply at the Bosnian embassy or consulate responsible for the country where you live. Indians resident in Qatar, for example, use the Doha embassy's list quoted above.^[4] For residents of India, check the Foreign Ministry's list of diplomatic missions to find which BiH embassy covers India, and download its current checklist before collecting documents.^[1] No checklist written for applicants in India turned up on an official BiH page when we looked in October 2026; rather than guess, we leave it out.

Processing at the Doha embassy is listed as 5 to 7 days, but 30 to 40 days for certain nationalities.^[4] Ask early whether your nationality falls in the longer group, because it changes when you should book anything.

What a Bosnia reservation or itinerary should show

• Your full name exactly as in the passport.
• Arrival into Bosnia and departure from it, or the border crossing plan if you arrive by road.
• Dates matching the insurance, which at the Doha embassy must be 30,000 EUR or 50,000 USD cover.^[4]
• A stay you can fund at KM 150 per day.^[1]
• A PNR that opens on the airline website.

Getting to Sarajevo, and the overland option

Most flights land at Sarajevo International Airport, though plenty of travellers come in by road from Croatia, Serbia or Montenegro. Overland entry is popular because the region is compact: Dubrovnik to Mostar, Belgrade to Sarajevo and Kotor to Trebinje are all common legs.

If you go overland, your flight documents will show a different arrival or departure city. That is normal, but put a short day-by-day plan in your file so the Bosnian leg is clear. Check-in and the border: what to carry

Airlines check that your documents allow entry to Bosnia before boarding. For an Indian passport that means either the Bosnian visa or the qualifying multiple-entry Schengen visa or EU/Schengen/US residence permit. Agents and border officers can also ask how you will leave and how you will fund the stay.

1. Passport with the Bosnian visa or qualifying Schengen visa or permit.
2. A paid onward or return ticket for travel day. A reservation belongs to the application stage.
3. Travel insurance certificate.
4. Bank card or cash covering KM 150 per day.^[1]
5. Hotel bookings for each night.

The Doha embassy page closes with a blunt reminder: a visa does not guarantee entry into Bosnia and Herzegovina.^[4] Border police make the final call.

Building a Bosnian visa file in order

A Bosnian itinerary booked with us holds for two weeks at the most, and the carrier picks the exact length. • Assuming a single-entry Schengen visa counts. The wording is multiple-entry.
• Staying past 30 days on the Schengen/EU/US route.
• Submitting a reservation where the list demands a ticket, without asking first.
• Insurance below the stated cover.
• Bank balance too thin for KM 150 a day.
• Itinerary that skips the overland leg, leaving the Bosnian days unexplained.

Bosnia and Herzegovina visa: your questions

Can I visit Bosnia with a Schengen visa on an Indian passport?

Yes, if it is a valid multiple-entry Schengen visa, according to the Embassy of India in Budapest. A valid residence permit from a Schengen state, an EU member state or the USA also qualifies. The BiH Embassy in Oslo's page describes stays of up to 30 days on this basis. Single-entry Schengen visas are not covered by that wording.

Does a UK or US visa let me enter Bosnia?

The Embassy of India in Budapest names a multiple-entry Schengen visa and residence permits from Schengen states, the EU or the USA. It does not name UK or US visas. If that is all you hold, ask a Bosnian mission before you book, and plan on applying for a Bosnian visa.

Is a flight reservation accepted for a Bosnian visa?

It depends on the mission. Chicago accepts a copy of a round-trip ticket or an itinerary, which a held reservation fits. Doha asks for a photocopy of the return air ticket, which suggests an issued ticket; a reservation may not satisfy that. Read your mission's list, and if it says ticket, ask before submitting.

How much money do I need for Bosnia?

The BiH Foreign Ministry sets the minimum at KM 150 for each day of the intended stay, or the equivalent in a convertible currency. Show it through bank statements with the application, and carry a card or cash that covers it when you cross the border.

How long does a Bosnian visa take?

Can I enter Bosnia by bus from Croatia or Serbia?

Yes, overland entry is common, and the same visa rules apply at land borders. Your file should show the whole route, including the bus or car leg into Bosnia and your exit, so officers can see how the Bosnian days fit the trip.
