Delta Dummy Ticket: A Delta Reservation for US and Schengen Visas

Delta comes up in two kinds of conversations at our visa desk. The first is from people outside the US preparing a B1/B2 interview who want flights on paper without paying hundreds of dollars. The second is from people living in the US, often on H-1B or F-1 status, who need an itinerary from Atlanta, New York or Detroit for a Schengen or UK visa. Both groups also ask about Delta's 24-hour cancellation and the US government rule behind it. We'll cover all of that here, quoting Delta, the State Department and the federal regulation itself.

Delta reservation: key facts

Do you need a Delta booking for a US B1/B2 visa?

No paid ticket, and arguably no reservation at all. The State Department's visitor visa page tells applicants to wait for the visa before they finalise travel or pay for tickets.^[5] The interview at a US embassy or consulate turns on your circumstances: why you're going, how you'll pay, and what brings you home. Flights are a small detail in that conversation.

Where a reservation earns its place is in your own preparation. A sponsor or employer letter usually names travel dates, you'll be asked about your plans, and having real Delta flight numbers and times makes those answers concrete and consistent. Some applicants also like to carry a printed itinerary to the interview. That's a personal choice, not a requirement we've seen in official guidance. A small example of how we'd use it. Say your interview at the US consulate in Mumbai is on 9 December, and your cousin's wedding in Atlanta is on 15 February. A Delta reservation for early February, ordered a few days before the interview, lets you answer "when are you travelling?" with real flight numbers and dates that match the wedding invitation. If the officer asks, you can say plainly that you haven't bought the ticket yet because you're waiting for the visa.

Our honest view: if you're applying from India, Nigeria or elsewhere, don't spend on a Delta fare before the visa. If you want an itinerary for planning, a reservation is cheap and enough.

Visa Waiver and ESTA travellers: a reservation won't do

This is the one Delta scenario where we'd steer you away from us. People who travel to the US on the Visa Waiver Program with an ESTA don't apply for a visa, but federal rules expect them to hold a round trip ticket. The regulation, 8 CFR 217.2, defines it as a return trip transportation ticket in the traveller's name on a participating carrier, "valid for at least 1 year".^[6]

A held reservation is not a ticket under that definition. Example: say you're an Australian passport holder flying Sydney to Atlanta one way on Delta, planning to leave the US later by bus to Canada. The sample further down shows exactly that kind of one-way routing. Before you board, the airline may want to see how you leave, and the legal test is a ticket. What is the US DOT 24-hour reservation rule?

It's a federal consumer-protection rule, and it explains why almost every airline selling flights in the US has some 24-hour promise. The Department of Transportation requires each "covered carrier" to adopt a customer service plan and stick to it. The definition, in 14 CFR 259.3, covers US airlines and also any "foreign air carrier operating to, from or within the United States" that runs scheduled or public charter service with at least one aircraft of 30 or more seats.^[3]

Item (b)(4) of section 259.5 is the 24-hour part. The plan must commit to:

• 14 CFR 259.5(b)(4): "Allowing reservations to be held at the quoted fare without payment, or cancelled without penalty, for at least twenty-four hours after the reservation is made if the reservation is made one week or more prior to a flight's departure."^[3]

Two things follow from the wording. First, it's an either/or: an airline can offer a free hold or a penalty-free cancellation, and both Delta and United publish the cancellation version. Second, bookings made less than a week before departure fall outside the federal minimum, although an airline is free to be more generous.

How does Delta's 24-Hour Risk-Free Cancellation work?

Delta's version is a refund window rather than a hold. On its change and cancel overview, Delta says customers qualify "by purchasing a qualifying ticket on travel from the U.S.", and then: "You have one day from the time of purchase to change your flight for any reason or to cancel and receive a full refund with no cancellation fee." Elsewhere on the same page, it adds that you need to book directly with Delta and cancel before departure.^[2]

Notice the scope. "Travel from the U.S." means a Mumbai–Atlanta booking made in India isn't described as covered on that page. After the one-day window, Delta's table shows that Basic and Classic tickets return only remaining value as an eCredit minus a cancellation charge, unless the fare is refundable.^[2]

A day of protection doesn't match a visa timeline. If your interview is three weeks away, a ticket cancelled after 24 hours shows nothing on the day, and one kept beyond 24 hours has cost you real money. That's the gap a reservation fills.

How do you check a Delta reservation in My Trips?

Delta's support page spells out the search: type first name, last name and confirmation number, then click Search.^[1]

1. On delta.com, choose My Trips at the top of the page.
2. Enter the passenger's first name and last name as booked.
3. Enter the six-character confirmation number from your itinerary PDF.
4. Click Search and wait for the trip summary.
5. Hold the result up against your application: each flight, each date, each spelling.

Delta's search uses both names, unlike airlines that ask only for a surname. So if the trip doesn't load, the first-name field is the usual culprit: a middle name typed into it, or a missing one. Try the first name exactly as it appears on the PDF. More tips in checking a reservation before you submit.

What name rules apply on Delta?

US Secure Flight rules. Delta's travel agent guidance says the full name "must be provided as it appears on non-expired government issued ID used for traveling", along with date of birth and gender. The same page reassures that small differences, such as a middle initial instead of a full middle name, or no middle name at all, "should not cause a problem".^[4]

For a visa reservation, aim higher than "no problem". Use the passport's spelling, with the surname in the last-name field. Using Delta for a Schengen visa from the US

If you live in the US and apply for a Schengen visa at a consulate there, a Delta return from your home airport to Europe is a natural itinerary, and Delta's SkyTeam partners include Air France and KLM if you'd connect in Paris or Amsterdam.^[8] Brussels' guidance gives a window from six months down to 15 days before departure for lodging the application, and a normal 15-day decision period that can stretch to 45.^[7]

Example: say you're in Atlanta on an H-1B, your consulate appointment is on 3 December, and you want to fly to Rome on 20 December. We'd order the Delta reservation around 30 November or 1 December. It stays valid for up to 2 weeks, with Delta deciding the exact period, so that timing keeps it live on appointment day. After the visa decision

When the visa is issued, buy the Delta ticket you actually want, with dates inside the visa's validity. For a Schengen visa, check the "from" and "until" dates and the number of days granted before you book.

Before the interview or submission

• The trip opens in Delta's My Trips with first name, last name and confirmation number.
• Names match the passport, with the surname in the right field.
• Dates agree with your visa form answers, invitation letters or Schengen form.
• The routing makes sense from where you actually live.

• Flying into the US on ESTA with only a reservation for the way out.
• Buying a non-refundable Delta fare before the visa interview.
• A confirmation number that Delta's search can't find.

1. Start on the order page: route, dates, and Delta as your airline.
2. Type each passenger's name the way the passport prints it.
3. Check out via Razorpay using a card, UPI or netbanking.
