British Airways Dummy Ticket: When a BA Reservation Helps a Visa File

A British Airways dummy ticket is a held reservation on BA flights, not a paid ticket, which you can open in Find my booking on ba.com with the reference and surname. For a UK visitor visa, GOV.UK treats flight bookings as less useful unless you are transiting. It is most useful for Schengen and transit applications.

People usually search for a British Airways dummy ticket for one of two reasons. Some are applying for a UK visitor visa and assume the Home Office wants flights. Others live in the UK, or route through London, and need an itinerary for a Schengen or other visa. The first group may not need a reservation at all, and we'll say so plainly below. For the second, a held BA booking with a reference you can open on ba.com is the sensible choice. Here's how British Airways' own tools, name rules and hold option work, with every policy linked to BA or GOV.UK.

Do you need a British Airways reservation for a UK visitor visa?

Usually, no. This surprises people, so here is the source. The Home Office guide to supporting documents for visiting the UK has a section headed "Documents you should not use as evidence". It says some documents are less useful in visit applications, and the list includes hotel bookings, travel insurance and "flight bookings (unless transiting)".[5]

What the UK cares about is whether you're a genuine visitor who will leave: your job, your money, your ties at home, the purpose of the trip. A flight booking doesn't prove any of that. So if you're applying for a Standard Visitor visa from India, Nigeria or anywhere else, don't buy a BA ticket before the decision, and you don't need a reservation from us either. You can describe your planned dates in the form and cover letter. We'd rather lose a sale than have you spend money on paper the caseworker won't weigh. More on this in our UK visa application guide.

The exception is the one GOV.UK names: transit.

When does a BA booking matter for UK transit?

If you're changing flights in the UK, the onward flight is the whole point. GOV.UK says you might need a Visitor in Transit visa if you're changing flights in the UK on the way to another country, going through UK border control (for example to check in luggage for the connection), and leaving within 48 hours. It costs £74.50, and whether you need one depends on your nationality.[6]

Example: say you're flying Lagos to London on one booking, then London to Toronto on another the next morning. You'd pass through border control to recheck bags. The application has to show that you are genuinely passing through, so your onward flight details are central evidence here, not an extra. A held reservation shows the planned connection. Whether a reservation or a paid ticket is expected for the onward leg is something to confirm with the visa guidance for your nationality, and the destination country may want a paid onward ticket at its own border. How do you look up a reservation on ba.com?

British Airways calls the page "Find my booking". It asks for two things and a tick-box.[1]

  1. Go to ba.com and open Manage My Booking, which takes you to "Find my booking".
  2. Type the booking reference from your reservation PDF. BA says references are 6 or 10 characters long.[1]
  3. Enter the last name of a passenger exactly as it is shown on the booking.
  4. If you're opening a group booking, tick the box confirming you have the other passengers' consent.
  5. Click Find my booking and compare the flights, dates and names with your application.

BA's site occasionally shows a "high demand" holding page. That's the website queuing visitors, not a problem with your booking; wait a minute and try again. If the booking itself won't load, check the surname first. Other airlines' lookup pages are covered in our reservation-checking walkthrough.

What does British Airways say about names?

BA's rules are relaxed about middle names and strict about everything else. Its manage-booking FAQ says you don't need to add middle names, provided your first (given) name and last (family) name are correct and match your passport. If a middle name has been joined onto the first name with no space, that's not a problem; BA's systems can't show the spaces and the names appear as one.[2]

The strict part: your ticket and passport must match. BA says you can't travel on a ticket in your married name with a passport in your maiden name, and that visas and ESTAs must be in the same name as the ticket. Where a name needs changing to match a new passport, BA makes no charge, but you pay any rise in taxes, fees and carrier charges, and may need to prove your identity.[2]

For a visa reservation, that boils down to one habit. Enter the name exactly as it reads on the passport you're applying with. Say your passport was renewed after marriage and now reads FERNANDES rather than D'SOUZA. Use Fernandes, even if your old visas say otherwise. Our name format guide and the page on name changes after marriage go into the edge cases.

Can BA hold a fare or refund you within 24 hours?

Both exist, and both are aimed at people who intend to buy.

Hold your flight price. BA lets you hold flights and the price for up to 72 hours. The deposit is £5 per person for short-haul and £10 for long-haul ($5/€5 or $10/€10 elsewhere), and BA refunds the deposit once you pay for the booking. It's only on selected British Airways and Iberia routes; if the option doesn't appear next to the price, you can't hold that booking.[3]

The 24-hour guarantee. If you booked directly with BA and need to change a passenger within 24 hours, you can cancel and get a full refund. It doesn't cover flights departing within 24 hours of booking, bookings where immediate payment isn't required, or packages with hotels or car hire. After 24 hours, flight-only tickets are non-transferable.[2]

Our honest view: the 24-hour refund is not a visa tool. It exists to fix mistakes, and paying a full fare to cancel it a day later only covers you for a day, while visa decisions take far longer. If a checklist wants a paid ticket, buy a flexible fare you'd be happy to keep.

Using a BA reservation for a Schengen visa

This is where a BA reservation earns its keep. If you live in the UK on a visa or residence permit and need a Schengen visa, a return from London on British Airways is often the natural itinerary. The same applies if you're in India and your real plan is a BA routing to Europe through London. Schengen rules don't care which airline you choose. They care that the trip is coherent. Send the application to your main destination's consulate somewhere between six months and 15 days before you fly; 15 days is the usual processing time, with 45 as the upper limit.[7]

Checklists generally ask for a reservation rather than a paid fare. The Netherlands, for example, is satisfied by a held booking in the applicant's name that shows how they arrive and leave, and its checklist rules out any need for a paid fare.[8] Our Schengen visa guide sets out what other consulates write, and UK versus Schengen flight bookings compares the two systems side by side.

What about proof of onward travel?

Certain countries test for an exit plan when you land or when you check in, and their wording matters more than the airline's. New Zealand, for instance, tells visa-waiver visitors that any onward ticket has to be paid for before they set off.[9] A held BA reservation will not meet that. For rules like this, buy a refundable ticket. Our onward ticket page explains where a reservation is and isn't enough.

What happens after the decision?

If a Schengen or transit visa comes through, buy your real British Airways ticket for dates that fall inside the visa's validity. Visas are sometimes issued for a slightly different period from the one requested. Say you applied for 3 to 17 June and the sticker reads 5 to 17 June. Book the outbound for the 5th or later; the reservation you submitted has done its job and needs nothing further. If the visa is refused, there's nothing to cancel with BA, because no fare was paid. Order a fresh reservation if you reapply. See what to do after a refusal.

Checks before you hand the file in

  • The booking loads on ba.com's Find my booking with your reference and surname.
  • First and last names match the passport you're applying with.
  • Dates agree with the form, the hotel and your leave letter.
  • For Schengen, the route enters and leaves the Schengen area; for transit, it shows the onward flight within the time limit.
  • Adding a BA reservation to a UK visitor application in the belief that it strengthens it. GOV.UK says otherwise.[5]
  • Booking a fortnight ahead. Book within a few days of the appointment.
  • Any PDF with an invented reference. If ba.com can't find it, an officer can't either.

British Airways dummy ticket FAQ

Do I need a flight booking for a UK visitor visa?

Generally not. The GOV.UK supporting-documents guide names flight bookings as weak evidence for a visit, with an exception for transit. Focus your application on your finances, job and ties at home. Don't buy a ticket before the decision. If you want to mention planned dates, put them in the form and your cover letter.

How do I check a British Airways reservation?

Go to ba.com and choose Manage My Booking, which opens Find my booking. Enter the booking reference from your PDF and a passenger's last name as shown on the booking, and press the button. The flights, dates and names ought to appear. Do this within a day of your appointment.

Can I hold a British Airways fare without buying?

On selected routes, yes. BA's Hold your flight price keeps flights and the fare for up to 72 hours for a £5 short-haul or £10 long-haul deposit per person, refunded when you complete payment. It is designed for people deciding whether to buy, and 72 hours is rarely long enough for a visa decision.

Does BA give a refund if I cancel within 24 hours?

If you booked directly with BA, you can cancel within 24 hours of booking and receive a full refund. The guarantee excludes flights departing within 24 hours of booking, bookings without immediate payment and package bookings. After that, refunds follow the fare rules of the ticket you bought.

Do I have to include my middle name on a BA booking?

No. British Airways says middle names aren't needed as long as your first and last names are correct and match your passport. If a middle name ends up joined to your first name with no space, BA says that is not a problem, because its systems cannot display the separating space.

Is a BA reservation enough for a UK transit visa?

Your onward flight is key evidence for a Visitor in Transit visa, which covers travellers changing flights and leaving the UK within 48 hours. A held reservation shows the plan. Check the current guidance for your nationality, and check whether your final destination demands a paid onward ticket at its border.

Can I board a British Airways flight with this reservation?

No. Nothing has been paid on it, so BA's check-in will not accept it. It exists to show a consulate or caseworker your planned route and dates. Once your visa is granted, buy a ticket from BA or a travel agent for the flights you actually want.

Can I use a BA reservation for a Schengen visa from the UK?

Yes, if British Airways is how you plan to travel. Schengen checklists usually ask for a reservation covering entry and exit, and the Netherlands states that a paid ticket is not needed. Apply to your main destination's consulate and make sure the dates match your hotels and insurance.
