Fiji Airways comes up in two very different kinds of paperwork. The first is visa applications made from Fiji and its neighbours, where a Nadi–Sydney or Nadi–Los Angeles round trip is the obvious way to show a planned journey. The second is the onward-travel question: travellers arriving in Fiji, or passing through it, who must prove they will leave. The airline's own pages and Fiji's immigration rules treat those two cases quite differently, and getting them mixed up is the most common mistake we see. Below we cover how a Fiji Airways booking can be looked up, the airline's paid hold, the routes, and what officials ask for. Every source is listed at the bottom.
Fiji Airways at a glance for visa applicants
| Question | What the official source says |
|---|---|
| What does Manage Your Booking ask for? | "Reference" and "Last Name".[1] |
| Is there a paid fare hold? | Yes: Time To Think: up to 72 hours, for a non-refundable fee, on the Fiji Airways website and on Fiji Airways' own flights only.[2] |
| Hold fee | FJD20 per passenger for international flights, FJD10 domestic; the airline notes that rates vary by market. Not offered when departure is less than 5 days away.[2] |
| Network | 25 destinations in 14 countries and territories; a oneworld member. Fiji Link flies domestic routes and to Tonga, Samoa, Tuvalu and Vanuatu.[4] |
| Fiji visa checklist (holiday) | "A copy of the travel itinerary/ticket"; transit applicants need "Proof of onward ticket to the next destination".[5] |
| Arriving in Fiji | Arrivals need an onward ticket to wherever they go after Fiji, plus a visa there if one is required; visitor permits issued on clearance run up to 4 months.[5] |
| Our price | $9 a passenger anywhere, or ₹699 in India, single or return. |
Does Fiji Airways let you hold a fare?
Yes, for a short while and a small fee. Fiji Airways calls it Time To Think. On the payment page of its website you are asked "Do you need time to think?", and if you say yes the fare is held for a maximum of 72 hours at the same price.[2] The listed fee is FJD20 per passenger for an international flight and FJD10 for a domestic one, with rates varying by market.
The fine print matters for a visa file:
- The fee is charged for each passenger and is not refunded.
- You complete payment through Manage my Booking within the 72 hours.
- Miss that window and the booking cancels automatically; the fee is lost.
- It only covers Fiji Airways' own direct flights, booked on its website.
- It isn't offered when the flight leaves in less than 5 days.[2]
Time To Think suits a traveller who is already committed and just needs three days to clear leave with an employer. It is a weaker fit for a visa application, where the wait between lodging and decision is usually measured in weeks. Three days of hold won't still be there when an officer looks at the file.
Our reservation is built for that gap. You get a held booking under a live PNR, each traveller named, emailed in about 10 minutes for $9 a head. It doesn't fix a fare and it isn't a ticket. The airline decides how long the hold stays alive, at most 2 weeks, so place the order a couple of days before you lodge.
Which visa applications usually involve Fiji Airways?
From Nadi, Fiji Airways' own fare pages this month list flights to eight Australian cities (Sydney, Western Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, Gold Coast, Cairns, Canberra and Adelaide), three in New Zealand (Auckland, Christchurch and Wellington), Los Angeles, San Francisco and Honolulu in the United States, Vancouver in Canada, and Tokyo Narita, Singapore and Hong Kong in Asia. Regional services reach Apia, Nukuʻalofa, Honiara and Port Vila.[3] Some routes run only in set seasons, so check the dates.
Fiji residents applying abroad. A Suva teacher visiting a sister in Brisbane, or a Lautoka family going to a wedding in Auckland, will usually fly Fiji Airways. Showing an FJ round trip in that visa file is simply showing the trip as it will happen. Our Suva and Fiji-wide guides cover where residents lodge applications.
Pacific Islanders connecting through Nadi. Someone from Tonga or Samoa heading to Los Angeles or Vancouver may route via Nadi. The reservation should show the whole journey from the first airport, because the officer needs to see the full route.
Visitors heading into Fiji. Travellers from India, South-East Asia or North America often reach Nadi via Singapore, Hong Kong, Sydney or Los Angeles. For them the question is usually the onward leg out of Fiji, which we deal with in its own section below.
What do official rules say about flights?
These are the rules we read this month for the countries Fiji Airways passengers most often apply to. The airline name on the reservation makes no difference; the wording on the checklist does.
| Destination | Official wording on flights | Does a held reservation fit? |
|---|---|---|
| New Zealand | Each visitor needs onward travel covered: the ticket itself, bank evidence of money to buy it, or a sponsor's promise to pay for it.[6] | For the application, as a travel plan. At the border, carry a real ticket or the funds evidence. |
| Fiji (visa applicants) | "A copy of the travel itinerary/ticket" for holidays and business.[5] | The wording allows an itinerary. Fiji's processing time is 14 working days. |
| United States | US consular guidance: wait for the visa before you pay for flights.[7] | Helpful for showing dates; not required. |
| Australia | See our Australia visa guide for the Home Affairs wording. | As a travel plan. |
If your list insists on a "confirmed" or "paid" ticket, our reservation could fall short of it; buying a flexible Fiji Airways fare is then the straightforward answer. Country wording is collected in flight reservation requirements by country.
What does Fiji ask for at the border?
This is where people slip up. Fiji's Ministry of Immigration lists, for entry, "Proof of approved visa and onward ticket for the next country of destination after Fiji".[5] Visitors from exempt countries receive a visitor permit on immigration clearance, valid for up to 4 months. India, for example, appears on the ministry's visa-exempt list.[8] For transit stays the checklist goes further: proof of the flight to your next stop, and of the flight out of that next country as well.[5]
Our advice is plain. A reservation can help you plan and can sit in a visa file. When you actually board for Nadi, carry a paid ticket out of Fiji, because the airline at check-in and the officer on arrival may both ask for it. Our Fiji visa guide goes deeper, and onward ticket explains how airlines check this.
Flying Fiji Airways for your visa trip?
Nadi to Sydney, Auckland, Los Angeles or Vancouver, sent with a live PNR in around ten minutes. $9 per person.
How do you look up a Fiji Airways reservation?
On fijiairways.com, under Manage. The form has just two boxes.
- Open Manage Your Booking on fijiairways.com.[1]
- Enter the Reference from our PDF, character by character.
- Enter the Last Name exactly as shown on the reservation, then press Search.
- Check the details: every passenger, the FJ flight numbers, dates, and the full routing including any connection in Nadi.
- Screenshot the result with today's date showing; it answers any later question about how you verified it.
Don't be thrown by the page's notes on online changes. Fiji Airways says only certain bookings can be changed online: those made directly with the airline, not yet started, simple one-way or return trips, and carrying an email address. Agent bookings and multi-city trips with stopovers are listed as not eligible.[1] Those rules concern changes, not viewing. If a lookup fails, check the surname spelling first, then contact us. Our article on verifying a reservation before submission covers the usual causes.
What if you live away from Nadi or Suva?
Then the trip starts on a domestic flight, and the reservation should say so. Fiji Link, the airline's wholly owned subsidiary, flies within Fiji to places such as Labasa, Taveuni and Kadavu as well as Suva and Nadi.[4] Picture a Labasa shopkeeper visiting a cousin in Auckland. A booking that begins in Labasa, connects in Nadi and continues to Auckland tells the officer exactly how the journey works. Leaving the first leg out isn't wrong, but showing it makes the plan easier to follow. Ask us to include the domestic sector when you order; we hold it where the schedules link up on your dates.
Do names need special care?
Yes. The lookup runs on the last name, so it must match the passport and the reservation exactly. Whatever the passport data page shows as the surname goes in that field, even if family members use it differently. Each child travelling gets their own line under their own passport name. If you've married recently, book under the name in your current passport. More examples are in our name format guide.
Which is better: our reservation, Time To Think or buying?
Here's how the three compare for one adult on a Nadi–Auckland return.
| Option | Up-front cost | Hold length | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Held reservation from us | $9 per passenger | Set by the airline, up to 2 weeks | Unpaid booking; price can still move. |
| Time To Think | FJD20 per passenger on international routes[2] | Up to 72 hours | Fee forfeited if you don't buy; not within 5 days of departure. |
| Paid fare | Full fare | Not applicable | Refund terms depend on the fare type. |
Our view: for a visa file, a held booking from us is the right size of document. When you're ready to commit to a fare, Time To Think is cheap insurance for a few days. When you board, have a real ticket.
When should you book it?
A day or two before you lodge. Suppose your New Zealand visitor application goes in online on 6 November. We'd order the reservation on the 5th, look it up on fijiairways.com that evening, and upload it with the rest.
For a Fiji visa, the ministry gives 14 working days for processing, so pick travel dates that leave room for that.[5] Keep the trip length identical on the form, reservation and hotel or sponsor letter.
What mistakes do we see with Fiji Airways itineraries?
- Using a reservation as a boarding document. At check-in for Nadi, a held booking is not a ticket out.
- Forgetting the regional leg. A Tongan applicant showing only Nadi–Los Angeles leaves out how they reach Nadi.
- Seasonal routes on the wrong dates. Some services run only in certain months.
- One reservation, several applicants. Every applicant must be on a reservation.
- Self-edited PDFs. Changing dates on a PDF yourself is never acceptable; we'll issue a fresh one.
How to get a Fiji Airways-route reservation from us
On our booking form, give the route, the dates and every passenger's name as the passport shows it. Add "Fiji Airways" in the notes if you want that airline. Whether FJ seats can be held comes down to the route and what's open that day; check with us first if the airline matters.
Customers in Fiji and across the Pacific are charged $9. Return trips cost no more than one-way ones, and multi-city plans are billed by every two legs. Pay with a card, UPI or netbanking through Razorpay, then watch the status on order tracking. Details on dummy ticket price; how a held booking differs from a paid one on flight reservation for visa; hotels on hotel booking for visa.
Please note: a reservation backs up your plan; it doesn't decide anything. That's for the visa officer, the airline or the border officer, and nothing from us can promise a visa or entry.
Fiji Airways reservation questions
Is a Fiji Airways dummy ticket a real reservation?
Yes. Fiji Airways' system holds it with your booking code, every traveller's name and scheduled FJ flights. Nothing has been paid, so it won't get you on a plane. On forms and letters, call it what it is, a flight reservation, and buy the ticket once you have the visa.
What do I type into Fiji Airways' Manage Your Booking?
Two things: the booking reference and the last name. Copy the reference straight from our PDF and type the surname exactly as it appears there. A lookup that fails is almost always a surname mismatch or a misread character such as zero for the letter O.
Would Time To Think work for my visa instead?
It could, but its hold lasts at most 72 hours, the fee isn't refunded, and it isn't available within 5 days of departure. Visa decisions normally take longer than three days, so the hold would lapse before an officer looks. It works better once you are ready to buy.
Will a reservation get me into Fiji?
Don't rely on it. Fiji's Ministry of Immigration says visitors entering need an onward ticket for their next country, plus a visa for that country if one is required. Carry a paid ticket out of Fiji when you travel; the airline may check it before you board for Nadi.
Can you show a route from Tonga or Samoa through Nadi?
Yes, where the schedules connect on your dates. Give us the full journey, say Nukuʻalofa to Nadi to Los Angeles and back, and we place it all on one itinerary. Showing the first leg helps the officer understand the trip.
Is Fiji Airways part of an alliance?
Yes. oneworld lists Fiji Airways as a member serving 25 destinations in 14 countries and territories, with Fiji Link as an affiliate covering domestic Fiji and nearby island nations. Booking lookups still happen on fijiairways.com.
How long does the reservation remain active?
Up to 2 weeks, and Fiji Airways decides the precise period, which can be shorter. Order it shortly before you lodge the application and check it the same day on fijiairways.com.
