Cathay Pacific Dummy Ticket: How to Look It Up and Which Visas It Suits

Most people who ask us for a Cathay Pacific reservation are applying for one of three things: a Hong Kong visit, a visa for somewhere Cathay reaches through Hong Kong, or a Schengen or North American visa where the cheapest sensible routing from India runs via Chek Lap Kok. In every case the visa office wants the same thing from the flight page of your file. It wants dates, a believable route and a booking it can look up. This guide explains how Cathay's own booking tools behave, what the airline says about names, holds and cancellations, and which official rules a held reservation does or doesn't satisfy. What does a Cathay Pacific dummy ticket actually contain?

It contains a live booking on scheduled CX flights, made in your name, with a six-character reference and no fare paid. We build it for your chosen cities and travel dates, then send a PDF that shows the flight numbers, times, cabin and that reference. Because the booking sits in Cathay's reservation system, the airline's own website can find it.

The word "dummy" is the trade's shorthand, and it is a bit misleading. Nothing about the booking is invented. What it lacks is payment, which means you can't fly on it, and it won't sit in the system for ever. A reservation like this stays valid for up to two weeks, and Cathay decides the exact period for each booking. On a visa form, call it a "flight reservation" or "itinerary". Never call it a ticket.

When does Cathay make sense? When you'd plausibly fly it. A Mumbai family heading to Hong Kong for Disneyland, a Chennai engineer with a conference in Vancouver, a Bengaluru couple doing Hong Kong then Tokyo: those routings read naturally. Choosing Cathay for Delhi to Dubai would not.

How do you find your booking on cathaypacific.com?

Cathay asks for slightly more than most airlines, and that catches people out. The "Find a booking" form wants your first name as well as your last name, plus the reference, and tells you to type everything exactly as it appears on the booking.^[1]

1. Go to cathaypacific.com, open Manage booking and pick the Find a booking tab rather than member sign-in.
2. Type the given name and the surname exactly as they appear on the reservation PDF. If the PDF shows "PRIYA LAKSHMI" as given names, enter both words.
3. Enter the six-character booking reference. Watch for 0 and O, and for 1 and I.
4. Check the result against your visa form: passengers, flight numbers, dates and airports.

Two practical notes. First, a booking made through an agency, which includes ours, can still be viewed in Manage booking provided at least one flight in it is operated by Cathay Pacific; changes and refunds are handled by whoever made the booking.^[1] Second, Cathay warns that flights operated by other airlines may not show in full. So if your itinerary includes a partner leg, don't panic if that segment looks thin on Cathay's site. That's one reason we keep CX reservations on CX-operated flights wherever the route allows.

If the lookup fails, the usual cause is a given name typed differently from the booking, not a missing reservation. Try again with the names copied letter for letter from the PDF, then message us with the reference if it still won't load. What are Cathay's rules on passenger names?

Cathay's position is simple: the name on the booking has to match your travel document. Its FAQ on wrong names is useful because it shows what the airline treats as a correction rather than a change. For tickets bought from Cathay, these are free if you send the booking reference and a copy of your passport:^[2]

• adding or deleting a middle name;
• swapping the order of surname, first name and middle name;
• adding a missing part of the name, or fixing typing mistakes;
• correcting title or gender;
• updating a name after marriage, divorce or adoption, with dates of birth checked across old and new documents.

Replacing the whole name with someone else's is not allowed without a legal reason, and agent-issued tickets go back to the agent.^[2]

What does that mean for a visa reservation? Mainly that you should get the order right before we issue it, because the officer compares the reservation with your passport, not with Cathay's FAQ. Indian passports often split names in ways that confuse booking forms. Say your passport shows surname KUMAR and given name RAHUL. Then the reservation should read KUMAR as surname and RAHUL as first name, even if everyone calls you Rahul Kumar Singh. Can you use Cathay's "Hold your fare" instead?

From India, generally not. Cathay's own page lists departures from India as ineligible.^[3] For other starting points the product works like this: after picking flights on the website, you pay a holding fee per passenger, per booking, and the fare is held for 72 hours. You then complete the purchase or let it lapse, and the booking cancels itself at the end of the window.^[3][4]

The fine print matters for visa applicants:

• The first flight must depart at least seven days (168 hours) after you choose the hold.^[4]
• Only itineraries made entirely of "CX" flights qualify; interline and award bookings don't.^[3][4]
• No changes at all are allowed on a held booking, including dates and names.^[4]
• The fee is not refunded, whether you buy or cancel, unless Cathay itself reschedules or cancels a flight.^[3]

Even where it is available, 72 hours is short for a visa file. Most embassies take far longer than three days to decide, so the hold would usually be gone well before anyone checked it.

Does Cathay Pacific let you cancel free within 24 hours?

Yes, but only if you're a member of the Cathay programme and you tick several boxes. The terms limit it to bookings made on cathaypacific.com, the Cathay app or its WeChat Mini Program, with your membership number applied when booking, at least eight days (192 hours) before the first flight, and paid with cash or cash plus Asia Miles. You cancel through Manage booking inside the first 24 hours, and the cut-off time shows on the payment page and in the confirmation email. Award tickets, package bookings and group bookings are excluded.^[5]

Could you buy a real Cathay ticket and cancel it the next morning to "prove" a booking? You could, but it would be pointless for most visas. The ticket would be cancelled long before the consulate looked at it, and the officer would be holding a document for a booking that no longer exists. If an embassy truly needs a paid ticket, buy one you're prepared to keep, ideally on a fare whose refund terms you have read.

Which visas does a Cathay Pacific reservation suit?

Cathay leaves visas to you. Its travel documents page says you may need a visa depending on nationality, purpose and connecting flights, and points travellers to consular offices and the IATA Travel Centre.^[7] So the question is always what the destination's own rules say about flights.

What should you check before the file goes in?

Sit down with three things open: your passport, your visa form and the reservation. Then go line by line.

• Given names and surname in the passport's order, for every traveller including infants.
• Dates that agree with the form, your hotel bookings and your insurance.
• A sensible connection in Hong Kong. A two-hour layover is fine; a fourteen-hour one invites questions about where you'll sleep.
• CX-operated flights, so Manage booking shows the whole journey.
• A booking that still loads on cathaypacific.com the evening before your appointment.

And the mistakes we'd steer you away from:

• Booking a fortnight early "to be safe". The safest reservation is a fresh one.
• A Hong Kong stopover longer than your transit plans explain, with no hotel to match.
• Typing a nickname or initials where the passport spells the name out in full.
• Using a generator site that invents codes. Cathay's system won't recognise them, and a fake document can end an application.

How close to the appointment should you book?

Close. Our rule of thumb is two to four days before the biometrics or submission date. Here's an example. Your VFS appointment is on Friday 14 November. Order the Cathay reservation on Tuesday the 11th, look it up on cathaypacific.com on Thursday evening, and print it that night. Booking on the 1st would leave the reservation close to its end by the time the file is opened, which is exactly when an officer might check it.

If the embassy asks for an updated itinerary later, order a new one rather than trying to stretch an old booking. It costs the same and avoids any gap.

What does a Cathay Pacific reservation cost?

You pay per traveller, and a return trip costs no more than a single flight:

2. Type names exactly as the passport shows them, surname in the surname box.
3. Pay by UPI, card or netbanking through Razorpay.
