Dummy Ticket for Fiji Visa (2026): Entry Rules, Onward Tickets and Transit

Indian passport holders need no visa for Fiji: India is on the visa-exempt list and a visitor's permit is issued on arrival. You still cannot enter one way. Fiji's Ministry of Immigration says visitors may be asked for a return or onward ticket, and visa applicants must show a confirmed return ticket, so carry a real ticket out.

Fiji is one of the easier Pacific trips for an Indian passport. India sits on the Ministry of Immigration's visa-exempt list, so there is no embassy file to build and no appointment to book.[1] What you cannot skip is proof that you will leave. The Ministry says plainly that you cannot enter on a one-way ticket, and that visitors may be asked for evidence of onward travel.[2] This guide walks through who needs a visa, what the official pages say about flights, what happens at check-in and at Nadi, and where a held reservation does and does not fit. Every rule links to the Fiji government page it comes from.

Who needs a visa for Fiji, and who doesn't?

If your passport country is on the Ministry's exempt list, you fly in and receive a visitor's permit at the border. Everyone else must have a visa approved before travelling. The Ministry is blunt about it: "All countries not listed here are required to apply for visa."[3]

Indian citizens are exempt. So are many travellers our customers often fly with or apply alongside, including citizens of Bangladesh, the Maldives, the UAE, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, the Philippines, the UK, the USA and most EU states.[1] When we checked in October 2026, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Nepal did not appear on the list, which means those passport holders apply in advance through the Ministry's online system, ImmiHub.[1][4] Lists change, so look at the current page for your own nationality rather than relying on ours.

One wording point is worth knowing. The Fiji High Commission in New Delhi describes Indian nationals as receiving a "VISA On Arrival" at Nadi, while the Ministry calls the same thing a visitor's permit for an exempt nationality.[5][1] Either way the practical result is the same: nothing to apply for before you go, and an officer decides on your permit when you land.

Return, onward or confirmed: how does Fiji word the ticket rule?

This is the part people get wrong, because Fiji uses different wording for different travellers. Here it is, quoted from the Ministry of Immigration:

  • Exempt visitors (including Indians): asked "Can I enter Fiji on a one-way ticket?", the FAQ answers "No." It adds that visitors "may be asked to provide evidence of their onward travel", and that they may be required to provide "a return or onward ticket".[2]
  • Visa applicants (non-exempt nationals): the visa page lists "Confirmed return air ticket" among eligibility points, asks for "A copy of travel itinerary/ticket" for a holiday visit, and repeats: "Submit a copy of the confirmed return air ticket."[3]
  • Transit visa applicants (3 to 72 hours): "Proof of onward ticket to the next destination and another outward ticket if traveling out of that destination", plus a visa or permit for that next country.[3]
  • A timing note on the Entering Fiji page: passport holders who need a visa or permit should lodge it "prior to purchasing your ticket".[6]

Read those together and the picture is clear. For a visa file, Fiji's own word is confirmed. For an exempt traveller at the border, the word is ticket, and the FAQ says you may be asked for it. Neither describes an unpaid hold.

Our honest view: if you are flying to Fiji, carry a real return or onward ticket. Should a Fiji officer or a check-in agent insist on something paid, an unpaid hold might fall short, and the departure counter in Singapore is a poor place to learn that.

What happens at check-in for a Fiji flight?

Airlines check entry rules before they let you board, because they carry the cost of flying back anyone refused at the border. For Fiji that means the agent will usually want to see how you leave. If your booking is a single one-way flight into Nadi, expect questions.

A typical problem looks like this. Say you bought Delhi to Singapore to Nadi on one ticket, planning to decide later between flying home or going on to New Zealand. The agent sees a one-way booking into a country whose own FAQ says no to one-way entry. Unless you can show a paid onward ticket, you may be stuck. Buying a cheap refundable fare at the airport, on a phone with poor signal, is a bad way to start a holiday.

Why might the desk agent and the Nadi officer want different things? We unpack that in check-in desk versus border officer. For the general rules, see proof of onward travel and what happens if you are denied boarding.

What does the officer at Nadi check?

On arrival you show your passport and any travel documents. The Ministry's list is short. Bring a passport with over six months left; be ready to produce your way out, where you are staying and proof you can pay for the stay.[2] The officer then decides how long your permit runs, anywhere from several days up to four months.

Having an exemption is not the same as a guarantee. The Ministry's FAQ confirms that even a visa holder can be refused entry, because every traveller is "subject to immigration clearance".[2] In practice the things that help are simple: a ticket out within the permit you are asking for, a hotel booking or host letter that matches your dates, and money to cover the stay.

If you want to stay longer, the Ministry allows a visitor's permit to be extended before it expires, applied for online through ImmiHub. Its services directory describes the extension as up to two months.[7][2] Don't plan a long stay around an extension you haven't been granted yet; book your outbound flight inside the first permit.

Applying for a Fiji visa if your passport is not exempt

For non-exempt nationals the process is online and paper-heavy. The Ministry asks you to apply three months before your planned travel date, and the application must be approved before you fly.[3] For a holiday visit of up to an initial four months, the documentary list includes:

  • Completed visitor visa application form and a certified copy of the passport bio page.[3]
  • Recent passport photos meeting the stated rules.
  • Confirmation of a pre-booked hotel, or a local sponsor letter and the sponsor's ID if staying with family or friends.
  • "A copy of travel itinerary/ticket", and elsewhere on the same page, "a copy of the confirmed return air ticket".
  • Proof of funds for the stay, such as a recent bank statement.
  • Consent letters where relevant (spouse travelling alone, minors), proof of relationship with companions and an approved leave letter.
  • An approved visa and onward ticket if you continue to another country that needs a visa.

The page also warns that "Providing false information in this application can lead to imprisonment or a fine or both."[3] Take that seriously. Describe every document for exactly what it is.

There is an obvious tension here. The Entering Fiji page says to lodge your visa before buying a ticket, yet the visa page asks for a confirmed return ticket.[6][3] We cannot tell you how a given officer reconciles the two. The safe options are to buy a fully refundable return fare for the application, or to email the Ministry and ask whether a reservation is acceptable at the lodging stage. Do not submit a held reservation and call it a confirmed ticket.

How do Indians usually fly to Fiji, and which transit rules apply?

There is no non-stop service from India, so every trip involves a connection. The most common routings pass through Singapore, Hong Kong, Sydney or Auckland. Each hub has its own transit rules for an Indian passport, and those rules matter more than Fiji's when you book.

Connecting throughWhat the official page says for Indian passportsWhat it means for your booking
SingaporeTravellers who stay in transit without clearing immigration do not submit the SG Arrival Card. The 96-hour Visa Free Transit Facility for Indians applies only with a valid visa from listed countries such as Australia, New Zealand, the UK or the USA.[8][9]Keep the whole journey on one booking and stay airside, or check ICA's conditions before planning a stopover.
AucklandA Transit Visa is needed when passing through Auckland unless you hold a valid NZ visa or a waiver-country passport. India is not on the waiver lists. Transit is up to 24 hours; fees start from NZD 235.[10]Apply before you fly. Allow time: Immigration New Zealand says 80% of these are processed within one week.
Sydney / BrisbaneAustralia has its own transit visa rules. We could not load the Home Affairs transit page in October 2026, so we cannot quote them here.Check the Department of Home Affairs before booking an Australian connection.

A transit visa application is one place where a flight reservation is often useful. You need to show the route you plan to fly, and you may not want to pay for an expensive Pacific fare before you know the transit visa is approved. Read the transit country's own checklist first; our guides on flight reservations for transit visas and onward-ticket rules for layovers cover the general picture. If the trip also includes New Zealand, see our New Zealand onward-ticket guide, since New Zealand requires onward travel to be booked and paid for.

When does a held reservation fit a Fiji trip, and when doesn't it?

We sell flight reservations, so we want to be straight about where they belong. For Fiji, the honest split looks like this.

SituationWhat the wording asks forDoes a held reservation fit?
Boarding a flight to Fiji as an Indian (exempt) travellerReturn or onward ticket; one-way entry not allowed[2]Not on its own. Carry a real ticket out of Fiji.
Arriving at Nadi and being asked for onward travel"Evidence of their onward travel"[2]Risky. An officer may expect a paid ticket.
Fiji visa application (non-exempt nationals)"Confirmed return air ticket"[3]May not satisfy it. Use a refundable paid fare or ask the Ministry.
Transit visa for a hub country (e.g. New Zealand)Depends on that country's checklistOften yes, when that list names a booking or itinerary.
Fiji as one stop on a trip needing another visa (Australia, Schengen, UK)That embassy's checklistOften yes, provided the embassy list mentions a reservation.
Planning, leave approval or a family itineraryNo official wordingYes, as a clear plan of dates and flights.

The pattern is simple. Where Fiji itself is checking you, a paid ticket is the safe choice. Where another country's visa officer wants to see your planned route before you commit money, a verifiable reservation is the usual tool. Rows one to three are classic examples of when a dummy ticket is the wrong choice.

Getting the flight side of a Fiji trip right

  1. Check your passport. It needs more than six months' validity from the date you travel.[2] Renew first if it is close.
  2. Confirm your status. Find your nationality on the Ministry's exempt list. If it is missing, you need an approved visa before you fly.
  3. Check every transit point. Look up the rules for each country you connect through, especially New Zealand and Australia.
  4. Apply for any transit or third-country visa first. This is where a held reservation can show your planned route without a paid fare.
  5. Buy the real ticket once visas are settled. Make sure it includes a flight out of Fiji inside the permit you will ask for.
  6. Book where you will stay. Keep the hotel confirmation or host letter with your passport.
  7. Carry proof of funds. A recent bank statement or card is the kind of evidence the Ministry mentions.[3]

Where Fiji trips tend to go wrong

  • A one-way ticket into Nadi with no plan to leave. The Ministry's own answer to that is "No."
  • Forgetting the Auckland transit visa on a route through New Zealand.
  • A passport with five months left. Fiji wants more than six from the date of travel.
  • Calling a reservation a ticket on a visa form. That is a misdescription, and the visa page warns about false information.
  • Planning a five-month stay on the assumption that an extension will be granted.
  • Hotel dates that don't match flights, which invites questions at the border.

Fiji flight and entry: common questions

Do Indian passport holders need a visa for Fiji?

No. India is on the Ministry of Immigration's visa-exempt list, so you receive a visitor's permit on arrival instead of applying beforehand. You still need a passport valid for more than six months, and you may be asked for a return or onward ticket, accommodation details and proof of funds.

Can I fly to Fiji on a one-way ticket?

The Ministry's answer is no. Its FAQ says travellers should be prepared to show onward or return travel, and visitors may be asked for evidence of it. Airlines know this, so a one-way booking into Nadi is likely to be questioned at check-in. Buy a ticket that takes you out of Fiji.

Is a dummy ticket enough to enter Fiji?

We would not rely on one. Fiji's rule speaks of a return or onward ticket; staff expecting a paid fare could reject an unpaid hold. Use reservations for transit or third-country visa applications, and carry a real ticket when you actually travel to Fiji.

How long can I stay in Fiji as an Indian tourist?

The visitor's permit can run from several days up to a maximum of four months, depending on your purpose and the officer's decision. You can apply online to extend it before it expires. Make sure your outbound flight falls within the period you expect to be granted, not a longer one you hope for.

Flying to Nadi through Auckland: is a transit visa needed?

Very likely, yes. Immigration New Zealand requires a Transit Visa for travellers passing through Auckland who don't hold a valid NZ visa and aren't from a waiver country. India is not on those lists. Transit is allowed for up to 24 hours, and fees start from NZD 235.

My nationality needs a Fiji visa. Can I submit a flight reservation?

Because the visa page says "confirmed return air ticket", an unpaid hold might not match it. The safest route is a fully refundable paid fare. You can also email the Ministry before lodging to ask what it accepts. Whatever you send, label it accurately on the form.

What does a Fiji visa cost if I'm not exempt?

The Ministry lists a single-entry fee of $93.00 and a multiple-entry fee of FJ$185.00. It asks applicants to apply three months before travel and to make sure the visa is approved before flying. Fees can change, so check the current figure on the Ministry's visa page when you apply.
