Singapore Airlines Dummy Ticket: How to Check It and When It Fits a Visa

A Singapore Airlines dummy ticket is a held flight reservation on SQ flights, not a paid ticket. It carries a six-character booking reference you can open in Manage booking on singaporeair.com with your surname. It suits visa files that ask for a reservation or itinerary, but not rules that demand a paid onward ticket.

A Singapore Airlines dummy ticket is a flight reservation on SQ-operated flights, held under a six-character booking reference in your name. Nobody has paid the fare, so it is not a ticket and you cannot check in with it. What it does give a visa officer is a route, dates and a record they can look up on singaporeair.com. This guide walks through how Singapore Airlines' own booking tools work, what its name rules mean for your reservation, which visa files it suits, and where a held booking falls short. Each airline or government rule links to the page we checked, listed at the end.

QuestionWhat Singapore Airlines or the authority says
Where do I look up the booking?Manage booking on singaporeair.com or the SingaporeAir app. You type either a six-character reference or a 13-digit e-ticket number, together with the last/family name "as in passport".[1][2]
How must names be typed?Full name as written in the passport, letters A to Z only, with a 25-character cap on given names and 30 on surnames. The airline suggests copying from the passport's machine-readable zone (MRZ).[2]
Does SQ sell a fare hold?Yes, Secure My Fare: the booking and fare are held for up to 3 days (sometimes 1 day on promotional fares) for a holding fee of around SGD 5–20 per passenger, which is not refunded or deducted from the fare.[3]
Free 24-hour cancellation?Only stated for tickets to or from the USA, booked one week or more before departure.[4]
Fixing a name after bookingContact Singapore Airlines; a USD 50 service fee applies.[2]

What is a Singapore Airlines dummy ticket?

It is a reservation, not a purchase. We create a booking on real Singapore Airlines flights for the route and dates you give us, in the names you enter, and send you a PDF showing the airline, flight numbers and booking reference. Because the booking sits in the airline's reservation system, the reference can be typed into Manage booking and should bring up your itinerary.

Two things it is not. It is not a paid ticket, so please never describe it as one on a visa form or cover letter; "flight reservation" or "flight itinerary" is the honest wording. And it is not permanent. A held booking has a limited life, and you'll see how long your route can be held on our form, before any payment.

Why pick Singapore Airlines at all? Pick it when SQ is the airline you would genuinely fly. If your real plan is Chennai to Singapore and back, or a connection through Changi to somewhere further, a reservation on SQ makes the file read naturally. Choosing an airline that makes no sense for your route invites a question you don't need.

How do you check a Singapore Airlines booking online?

Check it yourself before anyone else does. It takes two minutes and catches most problems while you still have time to fix them.

  1. Open singaporeair.com and choose Manage booking, or open the SingaporeAir app.[1]
  2. Type the six letters and numbers exactly as printed on your reservation PDF. Zero and the letter O are easy to confuse, so look twice.
  3. Enter the last/family name as it appears in your passport, the same way it was entered at booking.
  4. Compare what loads with your application: every passenger name, both flight dates, the flight numbers and the cities.

If the page shows an error, don't panic and don't retype twenty times. Check the spelling of the surname first, since that is the usual culprit, then message us with the reference. Our pre-submission verification guide covers other airlines and the less obvious error messages.

One practical point. Bookings that were not made on singaporeair.com, such as those made through travel agents, cannot be changed or cancelled on the website; Singapore Airlines tells customers to contact the agent instead.[2][4] That is normal and does not mean anything is wrong with the reservation. Looking it up is a different matter from changing it.

How should your name appear on a Singapore Airlines booking?

Singapore Airlines is unusually specific here, which is helpful. Its booking FAQ says to enter your full name as written in your passport, using only the letters A to Z, and capped at 25 characters for given names and 30 for family names.[2] The tip worth remembering is the MRZ: the two lines of chevrons and capitals at the bottom of your passport photo page. The surname sits before the double chevron (<<), and the given names follow it.

Some of the airline's rules surprise people:

  • Middle names: include one only if it appears in the MRZ. If it is not in the MRZ, leave it out.[2]
  • Single-name passports: if there is no double chevron, use the box for passports without a given name, and put the whole name in the last name field.[2]
  • One-letter surnames: double the letter, so a surname of "K" goes in as "KK".[2]
  • Patronyms such as bin, binte, s/o or d/o have their own instructions on the same FAQ page.[2]

Here is an illustration. Say the MRZ line reads P<INDRAMAN<<PRIYA<LAKSHMI<<<. The surname is RAMAN, and the given name is PRIYA LAKSHMI. On our form you would type Raman as the surname and Priya Lakshmi as the given name. When you later look up the booking, you use Raman.

Getting this wrong is not a disaster on a reservation, but it is a nuisance. A visa officer comparing your passport with a booking in a different name order will notice. On a paid Singapore Airlines ticket, fixing a name means contacting the airline and paying a USD 50 service fee.[2] With us, you simply tell us before the reservation is issued, which is why we ask you to check the preview. For more on spellings and order, see how to format names on a dummy ticket.

Can Singapore Airlines hold a fare for you instead?

Yes, for some itineraries. Secure My Fare lets you hold the booking and fare for up to 3 days by paying a holding fee, which Singapore Airlines puts at around SGD 5 to 20 per passenger. The fee is not refunded and is not deducted from the ticket if you go ahead. It is available only on flights operated by Singapore Airlines, for Economy and Premium Economy, and not on redemption bookings. Promotional fares may get a hold of just 1 day, and the final deadline is shown on the payment page. If you don't pay the full fare in time, the booking is cancelled automatically.[3]

So is Secure My Fare a substitute for a visa reservation? Sometimes. If your appointment is two days away and the route qualifies, it gives you a booking reference straight from the airline. The catch is the clock. Three days rarely covers the gap between appointment and decision, and the airline does not let you change a secured booking during the hold.[3]

Does Singapore Airlines offer free cancellation within 24 hours?

Only in a narrow case. Its refunds FAQ says tickets for flights to or from the USA can be cancelled without penalty within 24 hours of booking, provided the reservation was made one week or more before departure, and it asks you to contact the airline to get the full refund.[4] For other routes, the fare conditions decide. A refundable fare can be refunded on the website with possible fees; for a non-refundable ticket, only the taxes come back.[4]

That is why we don't suggest buying a Singapore Airlines ticket and cancelling it as a visa trick. Outside the US rule, you are relying on fare conditions you may not have read closely. If a consulate truly needs a paid ticket, buy a refundable fare, read the refund terms, and keep the receipt.

Which visa applications suit a Singapore Airlines reservation?

The airline does not decide your visa; the destination does. Singapore Airlines' own FAQ is blunt that each passenger needs a valid passport and any required visas, and that it is not responsible if someone is refused entry.[12] Here is how SQ bookings line up with the official wording for the places people most often fly it for.

DestinationWhat the official page says about travelIs a held reservation enough?
SingaporeICA advises short-term visitors to have enough cash plus "proof of onward travel (tickets, visas)".[6]For the visa application, usually a reservation shows your plan. At the checkpoint, ICA mentions tickets, so carry the real ticket once bought.
Transit at ChangiICA says transit travellers must meet the destination country's requirements, and some low-cost carrier passengers must clear immigration to collect onward tickets.[7]Depends on the final destination's rules, not Singapore's.
Schengen (via Singapore)Netherlands: a booking held in the applicant's name is enough, and paying for the ticket is not required.[9] German missions in India list "Flight reservation".[10]Yes, where the checklist uses this wording.
New ZealandImmigration NZ requires onward tickets to be paid in advance of the trip.[11]No. A held reservation does not meet a paid-ticket rule at the border.

A word on Singapore itself. If you apply through an authorised visa agent, that agent's checklist decides what goes in the file. If the list says "flight booking" or "itinerary", an SQ reservation fits. If it says "confirmed ticket", ask the agent whether a reservation is acceptable before you rely on one. Our Singapore visa guide goes deeper into that application.

For Europe, a reservation on Singapore Airlines makes sense when you really plan to fly from Singapore to one of the European cities SQ serves, perhaps at the end of a longer Asia trip. Schengen timing doesn't change with the carrier. Lodge it inside the window the Commission sets, which opens six months out and closes 15 days before you fly, and a decision normally takes 15 days, occasionally stretching to 45.[8] Our Schengen visa guide lists what each consulate's checklist says.

What should the reservation show before you submit it?

Run through this list with your passport and application form open side by side. It sounds fussy. It is also exactly what the officer will do.

  • Names in MRZ order, every traveller included, children too.
  • Arrival and departure dates that match the form, the hotel bookings and the insurance cover.
  • A route that makes sense: from where you live, to where you're applying, and back.
  • The booking reference printed clearly, so it can be looked up.
  • A live record when you open Manage booking within a day of your appointment.

And a short list of things that cause trouble:

  • Booking three weeks before the appointment, so the hold has lapsed by the time anyone looks.
  • An SQ itinerary via Singapore when your hotel bookings start in a city SQ doesn't reach on those dates.
  • Middle names added that are not in your MRZ, so the order no longer matches.
  • Calling the reservation a "ticket" in your cover letter.
  • Relying on a so-called generator that invents a booking code. It will not load on singaporeair.com, and a fabricated document can sink an application.

If something on the list catches you out, see common mistakes when booking a dummy ticket.

When should you book a Singapore Airlines reservation?

As late as you comfortably can. We'd book it one to three days before the appointment, not a fortnight. Say your biometrics appointment is on a Thursday morning. Order on Monday or Tuesday, check it in Manage booking on Wednesday evening, and print it then. If the visa is granted for other dates than the ones you requested, build the real trip around the visa and only then buy the ticket. Holding a reservation for weeks after submission achieves nothing, because the officer has already seen it.

How much does it cost and how do you order one?

The price is the same whichever airline you choose, and it covers one way or round trip per passenger:

₹699 India$9 worldwide£7 UKAED 33SAR 34QAR 33OMR 3.5KWD 2.75

For a multi-city route, each pair of legs is charged separately. Hotel bookings are priced per stay, per traveller, if you need one too; see dummy hotel booking. Full details are on the price page.

  1. Go to the booking page and choose your cities and dates. Say you would like Singapore Airlines flights.
  2. Type each name the way your passport's MRZ shows it.
  3. Look at the hold period on screen, then settle up by UPI, card or netbanking; Razorpay processes it.
  4. The PDF arrives by email, usually in about 10 minutes. You can follow progress at order tracking.
  5. Open Manage booking on singaporeair.com and confirm the details load.

We can't promise any visa outcome. The consulate decides, on the whole file. What we can do is make sure the flight part is genuine, checkable and consistent with what you've told them. Reservations versus tickets in general are covered under flight reservations for visas; our home page has the overview.

Singapore Airlines dummy ticket: common questions

Can I check a Singapore Airlines dummy ticket on singaporeair.com?

Yes. Open Manage booking, choose the booking reference option, and enter the six-character code from your PDF with your last name as in your passport. Your names, flights and dates should appear. Check this a day before your appointment, because a held reservation does not last indefinitely and the hold window is set when you book.

Is a Singapore Airlines reservation the same as a ticket?

No. Seats are held under a booking reference, yet nobody has paid a fare, so you cannot board with it. Where a checklist wants a reservation or an itinerary, that works. Where the wording says "paid" or "confirmed ticket", a held booking could fall short, so a refundable fare is the safer buy.

Should I use Secure My Fare instead of a dummy ticket?

Use it if you intend to buy that exact Singapore Airlines fare within a few days. It holds the fare for up to 3 days, sometimes 1, for a non-refundable fee. It suits buyers more than visa applicants, because most decisions take longer than the hold and the booking cannot be changed while secured.

Does Singapore Airlines let me cancel free within 24 hours?

Its FAQ offers that only for tickets to or from the USA, booked at least a week before departure, and you contact the airline to claim it. Other tickets follow their fare rules. Refundable fares can be refunded with possible fees, while non-refundable tickets return only the taxes.

Do I need to include my middle name?

Follow your passport's machine-readable zone. Singapore Airlines says to enter a middle name in the given-name field only if it appears in the MRZ, and to leave it out otherwise. Matching the MRZ keeps the reservation consistent with your passport and visa form.

Is a Singapore Airlines reservation accepted for a Singapore visa?

Acceptance is the decision of ICA and, in practice, of the checklist your visa agent gives you. Where the list asks for a flight booking or itinerary, a genuine reservation is the usual evidence. For arrival, ICA expects short-stay visitors to hold onward-travel proof, so buy your real ticket before you fly.

What if my visa is refused?

Nothing more is needed on the reservation side. You never paid for a fare, so the airline owes you nothing and expects nothing, and the held booking simply lapses. That is the main reason applicants choose a reservation over a non-refundable ticket. Reapplying later? Order a fresh one for whatever dates you choose then.
