If your trip starts in Amsterdam, KLM is the natural airline to show, and it also fits plenty of European itineraries that connect through Schiphol. A KLM dummy ticket is a held reservation on KLM flights with a booking code you can open in KLM's "My Trip". It is not a paid fare. The good news for Netherlands applicants is that the Dutch government states in plain terms that you needn't pay for one. What exactly is a KLM dummy ticket?
It's a booking held on KLM flights for the dates and route you choose, issued in your name, with a six-character booking code. We email it to you as a PDF. Anyone with the code and your surname can open it in My Trip on klm.com, which is what separates a real reservation from a made-up document.
What it isn't: a ticket. You can't check in or board with it, and it doesn't stay held forever. You'll see the hold period on our form at checkout, and we always suggest ordering it a short time before you submit. Use the words "flight reservation" on the form and in the letter. That's what it is, and it's what the Dutch checklist asks for anyway.
What does the Netherlands actually ask for?
The Netherlands is the clearest Schengen country on this point, and it's worth reading the words yourself rather than relying on a visa agent's summary.
- Netherlands Worldwide (all countries): the applicant should show a booking "in your name" for arrival and departure, or something else that sets out the plan; the page then rules out the need for a paid ticket.[6]
- VFS Global for the Netherlands in India: under "Proof of travel" the checklist recommends cancellable bookings in case of a refusal, wants a return or round-trip flight reservation, plus proof of travel between Schengen states if you're visiting several.[7]
Put those together and the advice is simple. Don't buy a KLM ticket before your visa is decided. Submit a genuine reservation that goes in and out of the Schengen area on your planned dates. If you're visiting Belgium or Germany on the same trip, show how you get there too, whether by train, bus or flight.
In India, Dutch Schengen files are handled by VFS Global at twelve centres, from Ahmedabad and Bangalore to Lucknow, Pune and New Delhi. The earliest you can apply is six months before departure (nine for seafarers), and the latest is 15 days before. How do you check a reservation in KLM My Trip?
KLM's My Trip page offers two doors: log in to a Flying Blue account, or "Log in with booking details". Use the second.[1]
- Go to klm.com and open My Trip.
- Choose Log in with booking details.
- Enter the booking code from your PDF. KLM's placeholder, ACQ167, shows the six-character format.[1]
- Enter the last name of a passenger on the booking, then press Search.
- Read the flights, dates and passenger names against your application form.
Two details trip people up. First, klm.com may redirect you to your country's site, such as klm.co.in, which is fine; the booking is the same. Second, KLM and Air France share the lookup, and the form itself asks where to find "my KLM or Air France booking code".[1] So if your itinerary includes an Air France flight, don't be surprised to see it. What are KLM's rules on names?
KLM is pragmatic about small differences. Its name-correction page lists three situations that don't need any correction:[2]
- You have several first names and only the first one shows on the booking.
- You booked in your maiden name, and that is the same surname that appears after your nationality code in the passport's machine-readable zone, which is what automated passport checks read.
- Your name is shown without spaces. KLM says its system does that, and it is not a typo.
For genuine typos, KLM corrects the name on request if you booked through KLM and fly with KLM, Air France or Delta. If one of the flights is operated by another partner, the request should reach KLM at least 72 hours before departure. You can't swap in someone else's name, and corrections requested at the airport carry a fee.[2]
For a visa reservation, aim higher than "acceptable to KLM". The officer compares the reservation with your passport and form, so match the passport exactly. Example: passport surname VAN DER BERG, given names ANNA MARIA. Enter "Van der Berg" and "Anna Maria", even though KLM's system may print VANDERBERG ANNAMARIA. Is KLM's Time to Think a better option?
It's a different tool. With Time to Think, you pay to lock a fare and its conditions for a maximum of 3 days. The exact period depends on when you book, where you're going and the fare, and KLM tells you when you take the option. The fee varies per ticket and is non-refundable. If you don't pay for the ticket before the period ends, the option is cancelled automatically.[3]
That suits someone choosing between two fares on the same week. It doesn't really suit a visa applicant, because the Dutch decision usually takes longer than 3 days and the option lapses either way. The Netherlands checklist doesn't ask for a locked fare, so you'd be paying for a feature the consulate doesn't need.
Picture the timing. You take Time to Think on a Monday, attend VFS on Wednesday, and the option expires on Thursday. The file then sits with the consulate for a couple of weeks. By the time anyone opens it, the option has gone and the fee is spent. A reservation ordered for the appointment does the same job without that wasted fee.

What if you've already bought a KLM ticket?
Then the fare rules decide what you get back. KLM's cancellation page says you can cancel all or part of a trip booked via KLM, Air France or Delta by requesting a refund, and that the amount depends on your route, class and ticket type. Its FAQ adds that a cancellation fee may apply depending on the ticket, and that in other cases cancellation is free. Bookings made through a travel agent have to be cancelled through that agent.[4] We could not confirm a general free 24-hour cancellation on KLM's pages for bookings made outside the United States, so don't count on one.
If the visa is still pending and the ticket is refundable, there's no need to cancel it just to swap in a reservation. Keep what you have and submit it truthfully.
Other trips where a KLM reservation fits
Any Schengen itinerary where you'd genuinely route through Amsterdam: a week in the Netherlands then on to Belgium, a Nordic trip via Schiphol, or a Germany visit flying into Amsterdam and taking the train. The EU rules stay the same. Booking for a family or a group
Put everyone who is applying on the reservation, and type each name from that person's own passport. Children count. For a family of four applying together, one reservation with four passengers keeps the file tidy: each application shows the same flights and the same booking code. Pricing stays per passenger, so four travellers means four times the single price.
KLM's own cancellation page notes that on bookings with several passengers, you can cancel flights for one person via My Trip, and that groups of 10 or more should contact KLM.[4] That's relevant only once you've bought tickets, but it's useful to know if one family member's visa is delayed. - The code opens in My Trip with your surname.
- Flights into and out of Schengen fall on your planned dates.
- Travel between Schengen countries is shown if you visit more than one.
- Insurance dates and hotel nights cover the same period.
- Every traveller in the application is on the reservation.
- Buying a non-refundable KLM fare because "it looks stronger". The Dutch checklist says a paid ticket isn't needed.[6]
- Ordering the reservation weeks before the appointment.
- Paying an agent for a VFS slot instead of booking it yourself.[8]
- Any generated PDF whose code doesn't open in My Trip.

No. Netherlands Worldwide wants a booking in the applicant's name showing entry and exit, or another record of the plan, and makes clear that buying the ticket isn't necessary. The VFS checklist for India goes further, recommending cancellable bookings should the visa be refused.

No. KLM says names displayed without spaces are a system feature and not a typo. Only one first name showing when you have several is also fine, according to KLM. Make sure the surname matches the one in your passport's machine-readable zone.
Can I use a KLM reservation for Belgium or Germany?
Yes, if you'd really fly KLM. Trips to neighbouring countries often route through Amsterdam. Your application belongs with whichever country gets most of your nights, and make sure the reservation's entry and exit dates match your application, hotels and insurance.
Does KLM refund tickets cancelled within 24 hours?
We couldn't confirm a general 24-hour free cancellation on KLM's own pages for bookings outside the United States. KLM says refunds depend on your route, class and ticket type, and some tickets carry a cancellation fee. That's one more reason not to buy before your visa is decided.
When should I order the KLM reservation?
One to three days before your VFS appointment works well. You'll see the hold period before paying, and ordering late keeps the booking active when an officer looks. If the appointment is pushed back by more than a few days, order a new reservation rather than relying on the old one.
Is it okay to submit a reservation instead of a ticket?
For the Netherlands, it's what the checklist asks for. Label it accurately as a "flight reservation" wherever you mention it. A genuine, checkable booking is fine; an edited or invented document is not, and can lead to refusal.
