If you apply for a visa in Ahmedabad, you hand your file in locally and someone in Mumbai reads it. That's the single most useful thing to understand about applying from Gujarat. The city has visa application centres for most of the countries Gujaratis visit, but for the major Schengen states, the US and Japan, the deciding mission sits in Mumbai. This guide maps that out from official pages, quotes what those Mumbai missions ask for about flights, looks at what Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport can realistically show on your itinerary, and explains how to time a reservation so it is live on your appointment day.

Why is your Ahmedabad file decided in Mumbai?
Because India's consular districts put Gujarat with Maharashtra. The German Consulate General in Mumbai lists Gujarat in its district. Germany does have an Honorary Consul in Ahmedabad, whose page sits under the Mumbai consulate as the supervising mission.[2] Schengen visa applications for Germany go through VFS, and German Missions say they can be filed at any VFS centre in India before travelling to Mumbai for a decision.[3]
Italy does the same. Its Mumbai consulate covers Gujarat, and its VFS partner collects files at four offices: Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Pune and Kochi.[5] Spain's BLS lists Gujarat under the Consulate General in Mumbai[7], France puts Gujarat in its Mumbai consulate's territory[16], and Japan's Mumbai consulate covers Gujarat too.[9]
For you, this has two consequences. First, the checklist you follow is the Mumbai one, even when you collect it at a counter on C.G. Road or in Navrangpura. Second, any rule the Mumbai consulates impose applies to you in full. Spain's is the one that trips people up, and we cover it below.

Japan's VFS page has a detail Gujarat applicants should note. If your passport was not issued in the Mumbai consulate's district, say you renewed it while working in Bengaluru, you can still apply in Ahmedabad by adding government address proof. A rent agreement, electricity bill or Aadhaar card qualifies.[10] The same page offers courier return of passports to your home or office for applications filed in Ahmedabad, at an extra charge.[10]
Coming in from Surat, Vadodara or Rajkot?
For several countries, Ahmedabad is the only centre in the state. BLS's list of Spain centres in India includes Ahmedabad and no other Gujarat city.[8] Italy's four VFS offices in its Mumbai district are Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Pune and Kochi.[5] Japan's Mumbai-district centres are Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Pune and Goa.[10] So a family in Surat has a real choice between a drive to Ahmedabad and a train to Mumbai, and the decision is made in Mumbai either way.
Pick the centre you can reach comfortably on the morning of the appointment, and book the reservation from the airport you would genuinely use. Surat sits roughly between Ahmedabad and Mumbai, so either airport can be a sensible starting point. The consulate will not mind which, as long as the trip makes sense.
What will the Mumbai consulates expect to see about flights?
A reservation, in every case we could check, and Spain goes further by telling you not to buy a ticket yet.
- Spain (Consulate General, Mumbai): "Flight bookings (roundtrip)", and a recommendation to wait for the visa before buying the actual ticket.[17]
- Italy (Consulate General, Mumbai): "Return flight details or airlines reservation printout", plus internal Schengen travel.[6]
- Germany (any centre, decided in Mumbai): "Flight reservation". A ticket you have already paid for gets no preferred processing.[4]
The US is different. The consulate covering Gujarat does not ask for a flight document at interview, and the State Department suggests waiting for the visa before paying for flights.[18] Our US visa guide has the detail. Where you do submit a reservation and the checklist uses the words "confirmed" or "paid", be careful. A held reservation may not satisfy that wording. Follow the checklist or ask the consulate.
Applying from Ahmedabad?
Live-PNR reservation, ₹699 a traveller. Paid via UPI, card or netbanking and emailed within roughly ten minutes.
Spain from Gujarat: the 15-day buffer
Since Gujarat falls under Spain's Mumbai consulate, the Mumbai-jurisdiction rule applies at the Navrangpura centre too. BLS says centres in that jurisdiction accept a file only where the travel date is after 15 calendar days from submission, unless the consulate has approved an exception by email beforehand.[7]
Here is how that plays out. Say you submit at BLS Ahmedabad on Thursday 5 November. Fifteen calendar days later is 20 November, so the outbound flight on your reservation should be the 21st or after. A departure the following week will not fit, so book the slot further ahead instead. BLS also wants six months' residence inside the jurisdiction.[7]
Flying from Ahmedabad: what your route can sensibly show
Show a departure from SVPI if that is how you would really travel. The airport's airline list shows international flights at Terminal 2. It names Emirates, Etihad Airways and flydubai as international carriers there, alongside Indian airlines that fly both domestic and international routes.[14] Since 29 March 2026, Air India and Air India Express also operate from Terminal 2 rather than Terminal 1.[14]
That shapes the routings that look natural for a Gujarat applicant. Emirates says it operates nine flights a week between Ahmedabad and Dubai.[15] A trip to Europe or North America with one stop in the Gulf, or a domestic hop to Delhi or Mumbai followed by a long-haul flight, is entirely believable. A reservation that begins in Mumbai with no mention of how you get there is not wrong, but it reads less cleanly. If you'd take a domestic connection, include it.
When to order for an Ahmedabad appointment
Two or three days ahead. Held bookings survive for no more than two weeks, with the airline choosing the precise length, so there is little point ordering the moment you get the slot.
The bigger timing risk in Ahmedabad is the gap between submission and decision. Your file is forwarded to Mumbai, and Japan's VFS page, for instance, gives Ahmedabad an indicative 12 days against 10 for files lodged in Mumbai itself.[10] That's fine. The reservation only has to be genuine and current when you submit, and consistent with your plan. When the visa comes through, book and pay for flights that fit its validity. Business trips from Gujarat
Travelling for a trade fair, a supplier visit or client meetings? Business visa checklists usually want an invitation from the host company and a covering letter from your employer or firm. The flight dates on your reservation should match the event dates in both. If the fair runs Tuesday to Friday, arriving on Monday and leaving on Saturday is a story an officer believes. Visiting family in Canada or the UK
Plenty of Gujarati families have relatives in Canada and the UK, and visits to them have their own paperwork habits. For Canada, IRCC's visitor visa page asks for evidence of the length and purpose of your stay, along with proof of funds and, where someone is inviting you, their letter.[19] If your Ahmedabad VFS appointment is mainly biometrics, the reservation still belongs in the online application. It shows you have a return date in mind and that it fits your leave or business commitments back home.
For the UK, keep it simpler. The Home Office does not need flight bookings for a standard visit, so a reservation adds little; a clear letter from your relative about where you will stay and who pays matters more. If you are travelling with parents in their seventies, list each person's dates separately when they differ. Officers notice when grandparents are shown flying home on the same day as a working son who has only ten days of leave.
Gujarati names on the reservation
Copy the passport letter for letter. Many Gujarati passports print the father's name as a middle name, and some include suffixes such as "bhai" or "ben" as part of the given name. If the passport shows Given name: Rameshbhai Kantilal, Surname: Patel, the reservation must show exactly that, not "Ramesh Patel". The same goes for children. A family of four needs four names on the booking, each matching its own passport, even if the children travel on the same itinerary.

Can I get a German visa decided in Ahmedabad?
No. Germany has an Honorary Consul in Ahmedabad, but Schengen visas are decided by the Consulate General in Mumbai, whose district includes Gujarat. German Missions accept Schengen files at VFS centres anywhere in India, the nearest included, and route them to Mumbai.
Is there a Spain visa centre in Ahmedabad?
Yes. BLS International lists a Spain visa application centre at Flexi Business Hub, Madhur Complex, near Stadium Cross Road in Navrangpura. Decisions come from Spain's Mumbai consulate, which brings its 15-day travel buffer and six-month residence rule with them.
Do I have to go to Mumbai for my US visa interview?
The US Consulate General in Mumbai represents the United States in western India, including Gujarat, so it is the natural post for Ahmedabad residents. Book through the official US visa appointment system and check which posts and dates it offers you. A flight reservation is not needed for the interview.
Can my reservation start in Ahmedabad and fly via Dubai?
Yes, if that is how you would travel. Emirates, Etihad and flydubai all operate international flights from SVPI's Terminal 2, so a one-stop routing through the Gulf is a normal shape for a trip from Gujarat. Keep the dates in line with the rest of your file.

Apply at the centre that suits you; the decision comes from Mumbai either way.
Does Italy's Ahmedabad office decide my visa?
No. Italy's consulate in Mumbai says its VFS partner collects documents at offices in Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Pune and Kochi and forwards them to the consulate, where the authority to evaluate applications rests solely. For tourists, the Mumbai list accepts flight details for the return or a printed airline reservation.
How long will the reservation be valid?
No more than two weeks, and the airline fixes the exact span. For an Ahmedabad appointment, ordering two or three days before is the safe choice. If BLS or VFS moves your slot, look the PNR up again; if the airline no longer shows it, order a fresh one.
