Dummy Ticket for Belgium Visa (2026): What Belgian Missions Ask For on Flights

The Embassy of Belgium's tourism checklist for India asks for a "Copy of flight ticket reservation", so a held booking with a live PNR fits at the application stage. Be aware of one catch elsewhere: Belgium's checklist for Qatar residents says the actual, non-refundable ticket may be requested when you collect the visa.

Belgium's checklist for Indian applicants is one of the shortest we have read: nine numbered items and a few remarks. The flight line takes six words. The weight of the file sits elsewhere, in what Belgium calls "guarantees for return", the evidence that you have a job, family and property to come home to. That is why a sensible, consistent itinerary matters more here than an expensive ticket. Below we quote the Belgian wording for India and for two Gulf states, explain where the rules differ, and show how to keep your Brussels, Bruges and Ghent plan coherent on paper. For rules that apply across Schengen, see our Schengen visa flight reservation guide.

What do Belgium's checklists say about flight tickets?

For India they ask for a copy of a reservation. In the Gulf, the wording grows longer and, in Qatar, adds a condition at the end. Here is each one in full:

  • Embassy of Belgium in India, "Tourism" checklist (2026 file): item 9 reads "Copy of flight ticket reservation". Item 4 asks for a "Full detailed itinerary", and item 5 for hotel reservations "for the total duration of the stay in Belgium and in other countries in Schengen".[3]
  • Belgium/Luxembourg tourism checklist at VFS Global, Qatar: under "Flight ticket reservation", "Only a round-trip flight reservation is required, the original ticket might be requested at the collection of the visa". A box at the end lists, at the time of collection if the visa is granted, an "Actual flight ticket (nonrefundable and non-transferable)."[6]
  • Tourist checklist for Belgium at VFS Global, Kuwait: "Air ticket booking and copy to any destination in Belgium or train tickets or Car reservation", with the reminder that "the majority of stay will have to be in Belgium."[7]

Plain reading: in India, a reservation is what Belgium asks for, and that is what we provide. The Qatar list is the one to plan around. A reservation is enough to lodge the file, but the visa section may ask to see a real, non-refundable ticket before handing over your passport. If you live in Qatar, budget for buying the fare once you hear the visa is approved, and do not assume the reservation will see you through collection.

"Only a round-trip flight reservation is required"Qatar, at submission[6]Yes, for lodging the application.
"Actual flight ticket (nonrefundable and non-transferable)" at collectionQatar, if granted[6]No. If asked, you will need a paid ticket at that point.

Our opinion for Indian applicants is simple. There is nothing in the Indian list that rewards paying early, and Belgian visa fees are not refunded on refusal.[3] Don't add a lost airfare to a lost visa fee.

Where do Indian residents apply for Belgium?

Applications go in at VFS Global centres across India, and VFS sends you to Belgium's New Delhi embassy or its Mumbai consulate for the document lists.[4] After Belgium closed its Consulate General in Chennai, the Embassy announced that Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Puducherry, Tamil Nadu and Telangana would be covered by Mumbai.[5] Check the jurisdiction page for your state before you book, since the Embassy does not set it out on one line.

Three practical VFS details are worth knowing.[4] Short-stay files need two complete sets of documents, so print your reservation twice. If you gave fingerprints for a Schengen visa within the last 59 months, you may not need to give them again. And if you are visiting the UK on the same trip with Belgium as your main Schengen destination, the New Delhi centre offers a "Single VAC Visit" that takes both applications in one appointment. Our UK visa guide covers that side.

Fees and timing for a Belgian visa

For a short stay you pay €90; for a child between 6 and 12, €45; under-sixes and qualifying family members of EU citizens pay nothing. VFS's own service fee was INR 2,700 per application when we checked.[4] The Embassy's list is blunt: "The visa fee is non-refundable if the visa is denied."[3]

On timing, the Indian checklist says to apply at least one month before travel and "at the earliest three months" before. VFS's Belgium page says six months.[3][4] The safe course is to apply inside both windows: between three months and one month ahead. Decisions are generally taken within 15 working days, but can run to 30 calendar days or, exceptionally, 60, in which case the file goes to the Immigration Office in Belgium for the final say.[4]

Here is how that plays out. Say you plan to land in Brussels on 6 March for a week in Antwerp and Ghent. Lodging in the first half of January keeps you within three months, leaves room for a 30-day extension, and still gets you the passport back in time to buy a ticket.

Is Belgium your main destination?

Belgium is the right country if it is your only Schengen stop, the longest stay, or the purpose of the trip. If two countries tie on nights, the first one you enter takes the application.[1][2] The Kuwait checklist puts it in one line: the majority of the stay has to be in Belgium.[7]

Belgium is small and well connected, so mixed trips are common. Brussels three nights, Bruges two, Ghent one, then Amsterdam two: six Belgian nights against two Dutch, so Belgium is correct. Swap it to Amsterdam four nights and Brussels two, and the Netherlands should take the file. Adding Luxembourg? Our Luxembourg guide covers it.

The India list asks for a full detailed itinerary and hotel bookings covering other Schengen countries too.[3] Show the trains between Brussels and Bruges, or between Brussels and Paris, as printed routes. If you fly out of a different city, a multi-city reservation keeps it on one page.

What should your Belgium reservation include?

  • Every traveller spelt as in the passport, with given names and surname in the right fields.
  • Return flights from and to your home city, because the Gulf lists say "round-trip" in terms and the India list expects a full itinerary.[3][6]
  • Dates matching your employer's letter, which Belgium wants to state your income and "vacation days allowed".[3]
  • Hotel reservations for the total stay, in Belgium and any other Schengen country.[3] Our hotel booking for visa helps with nights you have not fixed.
  • Insurance valid in Belgium and other Schengen countries, €30,000 or more.[3]
  • A booking reference that retrieves on the airline's own website.

The flight side of a Belgium file, in order

  1. Decide the main destination by counting nights.
  2. Download the Embassy's tourism list from the Belgian embassy site in India and read the remarks at the end.
  3. Pick an appointment between three months and one month before travel.
  4. Draft a day-by-day itinerary: arrival, trains, hotels, departure.
  5. Reserve the flights a few days before your appointment; our booking page shows the hold window before you pay.
  6. Retrieve the PNR yourself and compare names and dates. Our article on checking a booking before you submit gives a short checklist.
  7. Print two sets, one for each document bundle VFS asks for.

Mistakes that weaken Belgian applications

  • Thin "guarantees for return". Belgium asks for as much as possible on family, job, income and property.[3]
  • Hotel bookings that cover only Belgium when the trip includes Paris or Amsterdam.
  • Applying four or five months early, outside the Embassy's three-month window.
  • One set of documents instead of the two VFS requests.[4]
  • Expecting to change purpose or extend later. The Embassy says neither is possible; a new application is needed.[3]
  • In Qatar, no budget for a real ticket at the collection stage.[6]

At the airport and the Belgian border

Whatever list you followed, you travel on a ticket you have bought after the visa is granted. Airlines board passengers on paid tickets; a reservation is only paperwork for the application. On landing in Brussels, the border officer may want to see that you are going home, and the Borders Code's list of supporting documents names a return or round-trip ticket for that.[8] Keep a printout with your hotel confirmations.

Belgian posts do not explain how they check bookings, but a genuine PNR is visible on the airline's site to anyone holding the reference and surname. Doubts about the authenticity of supporting documents are a refusal ground in the Visa Code.[2] We only issue real reservations; we do not edit or invent tickets.

Applying for Belgium from Qatar, Kuwait or the UAE

You apply where you live legally, with a residence permit valid beyond your trip. The Qatar checklist asks for a letter from your employer confirming you will resume duties, bank statements stamped by the bank, and a travel programme with means of transport for multi-country trips. Its flight rule is the one quoted above: a round-trip reservation to apply, and possibly a real non-refundable ticket at collection.[6] The Kuwait list asks for a passport valid six months beyond your return and a residency valid three months after it.[7]

Belgium visa flight reservation: questions answered

Is a flight reservation enough for a Belgium visa from India?

Yes. The Embassy of Belgium's tourism checklist asks for a copy of a flight ticket reservation, together with a full detailed itinerary. A genuine held booking with your name, both directions and a retrievable PNR answers that item. Buy the ticket you will fly on only after the visa is issued, because the visa fee is not refunded on refusal.

Why might I need a paid ticket when collecting a Belgian visa in Qatar?

The Belgium and Luxembourg tourism checklist used at VFS in Qatar says only a round-trip reservation is needed to apply, but that the original ticket might be requested at visa collection, listing an actual non-refundable, non-transferable ticket. If you live in Qatar, be ready to buy the fare once you know the visa is approved.

How early can I apply for a Belgium tourist visa?

The Embassy's own checklist says at least one month before travel and at the earliest three months before. VFS's Belgium page mentions six months. Applying between three months and one month ahead satisfies both. Decisions usually take up to 15 working days, and can stretch to 30 or, exceptionally, 60 calendar days.

I live in Chennai. Which Belgian office handles my visa?

Belgium closed its Consulate General in Chennai, and the Embassy says Tamil Nadu, along with Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Puducherry and Telangana, is now covered by the Consulate General in Mumbai. You still lodge the application at a VFS centre near you; the file is then handled under Mumbai's jurisdiction.

Do I need hotel bookings for Paris if I also visit France?

Yes. The Indian checklist asks for hotel reservations covering the total duration of your stay in Belgium and in the other Schengen countries. Include every night of the trip, make sure the dates join up with your flights and trains, and keep Belgium as the place with most nights if you are applying to Belgium.

Can I apply for UK and Belgium visas together?

VFS India offers a Single VAC Visit service at its New Delhi centre for people applying as UK standard visitors and Belgian short-stay visitors, where Belgium is the main Schengen destination. You lodge both applications in one appointment and pay a small extra fee. Each country still decides its own visa separately.

Can I extend my Belgian visa if my plans change?

No. The Embassy's checklist states that a later change of purpose is not admissible and that a prolongation of the visa is not possible; in both cases a new application is needed. Plan realistic dates from the start and reserve flights that match them, with a day or two of margin inside the period you request.
