Searching for a "Liechtenstein visa" usually ends in mild confusion, because there isn't really one. The principality is in the Schengen area, but it does not issue its own visas. Its embassy in Washington says so directly and points visitors to the Swiss representation, adding that the same visa requirements apply to Liechtenstein as to Switzerland, without exception.[1] So a trip to Vaduz means a Schengen visa handled through Switzerland's network, and for Indian applicants that means the Swiss checklist, which asks for a "Flight reservation" with the names of all travellers.[3]

Why there is no separate Liechtenstein visa
Liechtenstein and Switzerland have no border controls between them, which is the reason the embassy gives for sharing visa rules.[1] You can drive or take a bus from the Swiss side into Liechtenstein without stopping at a checkpoint, so a separate visa would make little practical sense. The principality's own national administration site describes the process the same way: you apply at the Swiss representation where you live, and the decision involves both the Swiss authorities and Liechtenstein's Migration and Passport Office.[4] (That page blocked automated access when we checked, so we have relied on its embassy's wording for the quotes above.)
In practice this means the visa sticker in your passport will be a Schengen visa issued by a Swiss mission, and nothing in it will say "Liechtenstein". That is normal. A Schengen visa is valid for all 29 member states unless it is specifically limited.[2]
Who needs a visa to visit Liechtenstein?
Anyone who needs a Schengen visa for Switzerland needs one for Liechtenstein, and that includes Indian passport holders. If you already hold a valid Schengen visa issued by another member state, it also covers a visit to Liechtenstein within its validity and the 90 days in 180 rule; there is nothing extra to apply for.[2]
Holders of other passports should check Switzerland's visa list, since that is the list Liechtenstein follows. The embassy page sends readers to the Swiss representation in their area for that question.[1]
Which consulate handles your application?
This is where most people need a moment's thought. The Schengen rule is to apply at the consulate of the country you intend to visit. Visiting several? The one with most nights wins; on a tie, it's the first you enter.[2] Liechtenstein's applications go through Switzerland, so the decision tree looks like this:

What the Swiss checklist in India asks for
For Indian residents the Embassy of Switzerland to India and Bhutan publishes a tourist checklist, and applications are submitted at the VFS Global centre.[3] The travel part reads:
- Flight reservation: "With names of all travelers." "If applicable proof of intra-Schengen flights, train itinerary or car rental."[3]
- Accommodation: "Confirmation of hotel reservations, package tours, advance payments."[3]
- Families: the flight booking should mention "all the names of the travelling family members".[3]
The rest of the list covers a cover letter with your travel plan, an employer's introduction letter, travel insurance with at least €30,000 cover from an approved insurer, and three months of salary and bank statements with ITRs.[3] The full Swiss picture, including who decides and how long it takes, is in our Switzerland visa guide. The checklist uses the word "reservation", not "ticket". A verifiable held booking in every traveller's name fits that wording. Nobody is asking you to pay for flights before the consulate decides.
The Liechtenstein-specific details your file should show
Since the checklist is Swiss, the Liechtenstein part of your trip has to come through in your own documents. Three things make it clear:
- Your cover letter names Liechtenstein and explains how many nights you'll spend there, in which town, and why.
- Hotel confirmations for Liechtenstein nights sit alongside any Swiss or Austrian ones, with no gaps between dates.
- Ground transport is accounted for. Liechtenstein has no airport of its own, so your flights will land in a neighbouring country. The checklist's "train itinerary or car rental" line is where the onward leg to Liechtenstein belongs.[3]
An example. Say you fly Mumbai to Zurich on 10 May, spend three nights in Zurich, take the train and bus to Vaduz for three nights, then return to Zurich for a flight home on 16 May. Your file should show the return flight reservation, both hotels, and a short note or rail booking for the Zurich to Vaduz leg. Switzerland is the longest stay and Liechtenstein is covered by the Swiss process anyway, so you apply to Switzerland.
Reservation or paid ticket?
For the visa, a reservation. The Swiss checklist asks for one, and the EU Visa Code's Annex II accepts, as evidence that you'll leave, a booking for the return or round trip.[3][5] Buying a non-refundable fare before your visa is decided puts money at risk for no gain in the file.

What happens at the Schengen border
Because there are no controls between Switzerland and Liechtenstein, your real border check happens where you first enter the Schengen area, usually at the airport you fly into. The Schengen Borders Code says third-country nationals must justify the purpose and conditions of their stay and show sufficient means, and its Annex I lists the kinds of supporting documents a border guard may ask for, including a return or round-trip ticket.[6]
So the order of events matters. At the visa stage, a reservation answers the checklist. By the time you land, you should be holding a paid return ticket, your hotel confirmations and your insurance, ready to show if asked. A held reservation that has lapsed is no use at passport control, and you shouldn't try to use it there.
Two smaller notes from the Swiss checklist for India are worth knowing. It says only the documents mentioned on the checklist are accepted, and that the embassy may ask for additional documents or a personal interview.[3] If that happens and your reservation's hold has run out, order a new one with the same dates rather than resubmitting the old one.
If you are travelling on from Liechtenstein to a country outside Schengen, such as the UK, sort out that country's visa as well, and show the exit flight from Schengen in your reservation. A trip that ends somewhere other than home is fine; it just needs to be visible in the file.

Brussels sets the window: from six months ahead until 15 days before you fly.

- Searching for a Liechtenstein embassy visa form. There isn't one; apply through Switzerland's process.
- Applying to the wrong country. Six nights in Austria and two in Vaduz is an Austrian application.
- Leaving Liechtenstein out of the file. If it's part of the trip, show the nights and the ground leg.
- Missing a family member's name on the reservation. The Swiss checklist wants all travellers named.[3]
- Dates that don't match between flights, hotels, insurance and the employer's letter.
- Loose wording in the cover letter. Write "flight reservation", matching the Swiss list.
