SriLankan Airlines Dummy Ticket: How a SriLankan Reservation Works for a Visa

A SriLankan Airlines dummy ticket is an unpaid reservation on SriLankan (UL) flights, usually routed through Colombo, under your passport name. Look it up on srilankan.com using your surname and the six-character booking reference. It fits checklists that ask for a travel itinerary, and the German Embassy in Colombo explicitly asks applicants not to submit paid tickets.

SriLankan Airlines turns up in visa files from three directions. Sri Lankans applying for Germany, the UK or Australia show a UL flight out of Colombo. Indians in Chennai, Kochi or Trichy pick a one-stop routing through Colombo to reach Melbourne or Frankfurt. And travellers bound for the Maldives often connect at Colombo. Each group needs the same basics: what the airline's booking pages do with an unpaid booking, how to look a reservation up on srilankan.com, and what the relevant checklist actually asks for. That is what this page covers, using SriLankan's own pages and official visa sources listed at the end.

SriLankan Airlines: the facts a visa file needs

QuestionWhat the official source says
What does Manage My Booking need?"Your Last Name", as in the passport, and the "Booking Reference", described as the six-character code.[1]

Is there a way to hold a SriLankan fare?

Yes, briefly. SriLankan's Time To Think option lets you choose a hold on the payment page, pay a holding fee, and receive a booking reference with a payment deadline by email.[2] If you book more than a week before departure, the hold lasts 48 hours. Between 2 and 7 days out, it drops to 24 hours. Within 2 days of the flight, the option isn't offered.

Look closely at the conditions:

  • The fee is charged per passenger, isn't refunded and isn't deducted from the fare.
  • You can only finish paying through Manage My Booking, by credit or debit card. Ticket offices and the call centre can't take that payment.
  • The deadline can't be extended. Miss it and the booking is cancelled.
  • It applies only to UL-operated flights. Itineraries with codeshares or other airlines don't qualify.[2]

That's a sensible product for someone choosing between two dates. For a visa application it falls short, because two days is far less than any embassy's processing time. The hold would be gone long before the file reached an officer.

A reservation from us is made for that waiting period. It's a held booking with a live PNR in each traveller's name, emailed in about 10 minutes, for $9 per person. It isn't a ticket and won't lock the price. SriLankan decides how long it stays live, at most 2 weeks, so order it a day or two before you submit.

Can you buy a fare and cancel it free within 24 hours?

SriLankan does offer this, with conditions. A booking made on srilankan.com with a credit or debit card can be cancelled for a full refund if you act inside 24 hours of booking, as long as the first flight departs at least 72 hours after you booked.[3] You use a dedicated form with your last name and booking reference, not the standard refund request. Pay-in-cash bookings, Time to Think bookings, FlySmiLes redemptions and split bookings are excluded.

Some people buy a fare, print it and cancel the next day. We don't recommend it. Once cancelled, the booking no longer shows on Manage My Booking, so the document in your file stops matching anything the airline holds. And the German Embassy in Colombo has already said it doesn't want paid tickets at all.[6] Use the 24-hour window for its real purpose: fixing a booking you made by mistake.

Which visa applications usually involve SriLankan?

SriLankan's route map lists Colombo and Mattala in Sri Lanka, Malé and Gan Island in the Maldives, and Indian cities including Chennai, Mumbai, Trichy, Madurai, Cochin, Trivandrum, Hyderabad, Delhi and Bangalore. Beyond that: Karachi, Lahore, Kathmandu and Dhaka; seven Gulf cities; Tokyo, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Bangkok, Jakarta, Canton and Incheon; Melbourne and Sydney; and Frankfurt, Paris and London.[4]

Sri Lankans applying to Europe, the UK or Australia. A nonstop Colombo–London or Colombo–Melbourne return on UL is the most natural flight plan for many applicants. For Germany, a Colombo–Frankfurt booking matches the embassy's request for arrival and departure flight details.[6] Our Sri Lankan travellers guide covers the main destinations in detail.

South Indian travellers going further afield. With so many Indian cities on its map, SriLankan sells genuine one-stop journeys such as Trichy–Colombo–Melbourne or Kochi–Colombo–Paris. If that's the trip you'd take, it reads well. If you live in Delhi and Germany is your goal, a nonstop from Delhi probably makes more sense than a loop through Colombo.

Visitors to Sri Lanka itself. Sri Lanka's ETA terms list "A round trip ticket to show at the port of entry in Sri Lanka" for air arrivals.[8] A reservation helps you plan, but at the border carry the ticket you bought. Our Sri Lanka visa guide has the ETA detail.

Maldives via Colombo. The Maldives grants tourist visas on arrival but expects "confirmed return journey tickets" and a prepaid booking at a registered facility.[7] That is a real ticket requirement. Buy the fare before flying to Malé.

What do official checklists say about flights?

The wording on your checklist decides what to submit. These are the rules we checked this month.

DestinationOfficial wording on flightsDoes a held reservation fit?
Germany (Embassy, Colombo)Itinerary showing arrival and departure flights; "Please do not submit paid flight tickets".[6]Yes. This is the case it was made for.
Schengen, generalLodge from six months out up to the 15th day before travel; a standard decision takes 15 days.[10]Follow the consulate's own list.
United KingdomGOV.UK names flight bookings among documents that help little in a standard visit application; transit is different.[9]Optional.
Sri Lanka ETA"A round trip ticket to show at the port of entry" for air travellers.[8]Not at the border; carry a bought ticket.
Maldives (on arrival)"Confirmed return journey tickets" plus a prepaid confirmed booking.[7]No. Buy the return fare.
Last checked: October 2026. Your consulate's list always takes precedence.

If a list you're working from says "confirmed" or "paid", don't stretch it: buy a flexible fare instead of relying on our reservation. Wording for other countries is in flight reservation requirements by country, and consulate-level detail for Europe in the Schengen visa guide.

How do you check a SriLankan reservation on srilankan.com?

The Manage My Booking box sits on SriLankan's manage-your-booking page. It asks for two fields.

  1. Open the manage-your-booking page on srilankan.com.[1]
  2. Enter your last name as written in the passport. The form says so beside the field.
  3. Enter the booking reference, the six-character code from our PDF.
  4. Read every line: names, UL flight numbers, dates, and each Colombo connection.
  5. Save a dated screenshot for your own records.

A tip from experience: copy the reference rather than retyping it. One wrong character and the page simply returns nothing. If that happens, check the surname next, then message us. Our guide to verifying a reservation before submission lists other causes.

Example only: a Singapore Airlines layout, not SriLankan. SriLankan's page has a different design with the same key details. Other examples are on our sample reservations page.

Which name goes where on a SriLankan booking?

As the passport prints them, because SriLankan's lookup asks for the last name "as in the passport".[1] Follow the data page rather than the way family and friends write your name, and keep initials exactly where the passport puts them. Send us a photo of the passport page if you're unsure which part counts as the surname. Each child needs their own line. Our name format guide has more examples.

Reservation, Time To Think hold or a bought fare: which fits?

Each suits a different moment. Here they are side by side for a Colombo–Frankfurt return, one adult.

OptionUp-front costHow long it holdsMain drawback
Held reservation from us$9 per passengerAirline-set, up to 2 weeksNot a ticket; fare not fixed.
Time To ThinkHolding fee per passenger, non-refundable[2]48 hours, or 24 hours close to departureToo short for a visa wait.
Paid fareFull fareNot applicableGermany's Colombo embassy asks you not to submit one.
SriLankan doesn't publish a single holding-fee figure on its Time To Think page; it is shown when you book.

Our view: for the visa stage, a held booking from us fits. Once the visa arrives, buy the fare you'll fly. Time To Think is handy for that buying stage, when you need a day to compare dates. For most srilankan.com bookings, SriLankan also says the first date change is free, which helps if plans shift after you pay.[3]

Does a codeshare flight change anything?

It can. SriLankan marks codeshare services with a four-digit UL flight number, and its Time To Think page says such itineraries, along with those mixing in other airlines, can't use the hold.[2] For a visa file the practical point is simpler. A four-digit UL flight may actually be operated by a partner, so the plane, the terminal and sometimes the check-in desk belong to someone else. If your reservation shows one, the officer sees the trip as SriLankan sold it, which is fine. Just don't describe it as a nonstop SriLankan flight in your cover letter if the leg is flown by another carrier. Keep the wording neutral: name the route and dates, and let the reservation show who operates each sector.

When should you book it?

Shortly before the appointment. Say your German visa appointment in Colombo is on 18 November. We'd order the reservation on the 16th or 17th, check it on srilankan.com the same night, then add the printout to your file.

For the travel dates, use the trip you intend. The Schengen filing window runs from six months to fifteen days before departure.[10] Choose dates after the likely decision, and keep them identical across form, reservation and hotel.

What mistakes do we see with SriLankan itineraries?

  • Treating a reservation as a ticket for the Maldives. Malé wants confirmed return tickets on arrival.
  • A routing nobody would buy. A long detour via Colombo when a nonstop exists looks odd.
  • Codeshare confusion. Four-digit UL numbers can be flown by partners; show the trip as sold.
  • Buying and cancelling to get a document. The booking vanishes and the file no longer matches.
  • Doctoring the PDF. If something needs changing, request a new reservation from us.

Getting a SriLankan-route reservation from us

Put the route, the travel dates and each person's passport name into our booking form, writing "SriLankan" in the notes if you want UL. We can only hold UL where the route and that day's seats allow it, so ask before paying if it matters.

$9 worldwide₹699 India£7 UKAED 33SAR 34QAR 33OMR 3.5KWD 2.75

Sri Lanka falls under the $9 rate; Indian customers pay ₹699. A single or return journey costs one price per person, and multi-city plans add a fare for every further two legs, so a Chennai–Colombo–Melbourne return counts as one round trip. Razorpay handles card, UPI and netbanking payments, and order tracking follows your order. Prices are listed on dummy ticket price; how a held booking compares with a purchased fare is on flight reservation for visa; stays are on hotel booking for visa; border checks on onward ticket.

Please note: a reservation is supporting evidence, nothing more. The embassy, airline or border officer makes the decision, and we can't guarantee a visa or entry.

SriLankan Airlines reservation questions

Is a SriLankan Airlines dummy ticket a real booking?

It's a live reservation: SriLankan's system shows the booking reference, your names and the UL flights. What it lacks is payment, so nobody can travel on it. Label it a flight reservation in your paperwork and pay for the real fare once the visa comes through.

What do I need to check my booking on srilankan.com?

Your last name exactly as in the passport and the six-character booking reference from the PDF. Enter both on SriLankan's manage-your-booking page. If nothing comes up, recheck the reference character by character, then confirm the surname spelling against the reservation.

Does the German Embassy in Colombo accept a reservation?

Its tourist checklist wants an itinerary showing your arrival and departure flights, and it tells applicants not to submit paid flight tickets, because the embassy won't be liable for losses if the visa is refused. A reservation matching your planned dates fits that request.

Is Time To Think good enough for a visa?

Usually not. It holds a fare for 48 hours, or 24 hours when departure is between 2 and 7 days away, and the deadline can't be extended. Embassies take far longer than that to decide, so the hold would lapse before review. It's better used when you're ready to buy.

Can I use a reservation to enter the Maldives?

No. Maldives Immigration lists "confirmed return journey tickets" and "a prepaid confirmed booking" among its entry requirements for tourists. Buy your return fare before you fly to Malé, and keep the accommodation confirmation handy too.

Can you route me from India through Colombo?

Yes, where SriLankan's schedule connects on your dates, for example Madurai–Colombo–Sydney and back. A return through Colombo counts as one round trip at one price per person. Choose it only if it's the routing you'd really fly.

For how many days will it stay active?

At most 2 weeks, and SriLankan sets the exact period, which may be shorter. Place the order a day or two before your appointment, then look it up on srilankan.com that day so it's live at review time.

Why a live reservation beats a free "ticket generator"

A generated ticket has no PNR. A visa officer who checks it finds nothing, and a refusal for a false document is the hardest kind to appeal.
