Most people searching for a "dummy ticket for Mexico" are holding an Indian passport and wondering what to put in the flight section of their file. The short version: the visa itself is decided on your finances, and the flight question comes back at the arrival hall in Cancún or Mexico City. A good number of Indian travellers can skip the Mexican visa altogether because they already hold a US, UK, Canadian, Japanese or Schengen visa. We cover all three situations below, with the official wording quoted and linked.
Mexico visa key facts for Indian passport holders
| Question | What the official sources say |
|---|---|
| Does an Indian passport need a Mexican visa? | Yes, unless you qualify for the exemption in the next row.[2][3] |
| Who is exempt? | Any nationality holding a valid visa from Canada, the USA, Japan, the UK or a Schengen country, or permanent residence in one of those or in a Pacific Alliance country (Chile, Colombia, Peru). Stay up to 180 days, no paid work.[1][2] |
| What do visa checklists ask for? | Application form, passport, photo, fee and proof of economic solvency (bank balances or income over recent months). The published checklists we read contain no flight-ticket item.[5][6] |
| How do you book an appointment? | Through the foreign ministry's appointment system, citas.sre.gob.mx.[4][5] |
| What can INM ask on arrival? | Proof of the trip's purpose: "hotel reservation, return tickets (itinerary), tour tickets (itinerary)". Officers may also ask how you will leave.[1][2] |
| Who has the final say on entry? | The immigration officer at the port of entry. A visa or exemption does not guarantee admission.[2] |
Do Indians need a visa for Mexico?
Yes, an ordinary Indian passport on its own needs a Mexican visa for tourism or business. The visitor category used for holidays, meetings and short courses is called "visitor without permission to carry out paid activities", and it covers stays of up to 180 days.[1]
In India you apply at the Embassy of Mexico in New Delhi, and the embassy's visa page also points applicants to the Mexican consulate in Mumbai. We tried to open that page in October 2026 and were shown a security check instead of the text, so we have not quoted it here; open it yourself before you book.[3] Appointments run through the ministry's own booking site, citas.sre.gob.mx, which is free to use.[4]
Can you enter Mexico on your US, UK or Schengen visa?
This is the part many Indian travellers miss. Mexico's immigration institute lists documents that replace the Mexican visa for visitors of any nationality:[1]
- a valid visa from Canada, the United States, Japan, the United Kingdom or any Schengen country;
- permanent residence in one of those countries, or in Chile, Colombia or Peru;
- an APEC Business Travel Card approved by Mexico.
The Embassy of India in Mexico publishes an English summary of the same rules taken from Mexican migration law.[2] Say you hold a ten-year US B1/B2 visa and want a week in Mexico City. You fly in, show your passport with the US visa, and the officer can admit you as a visitor. No Mexican visa appointment, no solvency paperwork. The visa has to be valid on the day you arrive, so check its expiry against your dates.
Exempt travellers still face the arrival questions in the next sections. If anything, they matter more, because nobody looked at your plans in advance.
What do Mexican visa checklists say about flight tickets?
Nothing, in the ones we could read. Mexican consulates publish their checklists separately, and every list we opened in October 2026 was built around solvency rather than travel bookings. Two examples:
- Embassy of Mexico in the USA (Washington, 2026): form, passport, photo, a US$56 fee, and either bank or investment statements with a monthly balance of at least MXN 83,640 across the previous three months, or net monthly income of MXN 27,880 with a year in the same job. Bank statements must be originals; downloaded prints are refused.[5]
- Embassy of Mexico in Kenya: the same structure, with income of roughly US$1,500 a month after tax or an average balance of about US$4,500 for each of the last three months, or an invitation from an organisation that proves its own funds.[6]
Both lists exempt travellers aged 65 and over from the solvency proof when the trip is tourism.[5][6] Amounts and documents differ by mission, so treat these as illustrations of the format, not the New Delhi list.
So where does a flight reservation fit at the visa stage? It is optional. If your interviewer asks about dates, a reservation answers the question neatly and costs far less than a ticket you might not use. What it cannot do is replace the bank statements. We'd put the effort into clean, stamped statements first.
Plain advice: do not buy a non-refundable fare to Mexico before the visa is in your passport. Nothing in the published checklists rewards it, and you lose the money if the dates or the decision change.
What does INM check when you land in Mexico?
This is where tickets come in. INM's traveller guide says the immigration authority may ask you to prove the reason for your trip with one of several documents, and for tourists the first option is a "reservación de hospedaje, boletos de avión de regreso y/o boletos de tours": a lodging reservation, return plane tickets and/or tour tickets.[1]
Article 60 of the regulations to Mexico's Migration Law goes further. In case of doubt, officers may check your reason for travel, where you live, where you will stay, how you will support yourself and "the transport that will be used for their departure".[2] Anyone who does not satisfy the officer can be sent to a second review, which the regulations limit to four hours unless extended at the traveller's request.[2]
The UK government's advice for its own citizens describes the same checks: at Mexican border control you may need to show a return or onward ticket, accommodation proof and enough money for the stay.[7] Those rules are written for British passports, but the arrival practice is the same desk you will face.
INM's guide also lists sample questions: which places you will visit, how long you will stay, where you will sleep, who you know in Mexico.[1] Answer plainly and have the documents in hand, not buried in an email app.
Reservation or paid ticket: which one for each stage?
Here is how we'd think about it. The answer changes with the stage of the trip.
| Stage | Official wording | Held reservation | Paid return ticket |
|---|---|---|---|
| Visa appointment (Indian passport) | Solvency documents; no flight item on the checklists we read[5][6] | Optional; shows dates if asked | Not needed; risky before a decision |
| Airline check-in in India or the Gulf | Airline's own document check; visa or exemption document required | Often accepted as evidence of return; airline decides | Always satisfies a return-ticket question |
| INM arrival, visa holder | "Return tickets (itinerary)" listed as possible proof of purpose[1] | May or may not satisfy the officer | Safest |
| INM arrival, visa-exempt via US/UK/Schengen visa | Same purpose checks; transport for departure can be asked[2] | May or may not satisfy the officer | Safest |
Our honest read: a verifiable reservation is the right tool for the visa file, and for planning. For the moment you actually stand at an INM desk, the guide's wording says "boletos de avión de regreso", return plane tickets. A held booking that has lapsed proves nothing, and one that is live may still not be what the officer wants. Once your visa is approved, buy the real return flight you intend to take.
If you must travel before your return is fixed, for example a one-way trip continuing to Guatemala by bus, our guide to onward travel by bus, ferry or train covers the options.
Applying for a Mexican visa from the UAE, Saudi Arabia or elsewhere in the Gulf
Indians living in the Gulf generally apply at the Mexican embassy in their country of residence. The Embassy of Mexico in the UAE runs its own visa page; like the India page, it showed us a security check in October 2026, so read it directly.[8] The pattern on the checklists we could read is consistent: applicants who are not citizens of the country where they apply must also prove legal residence there. Washington asks for proof of legal US residence, and Nairobi for proof of legal entry into Kenya.[5][6] Expect to show your Emirates ID or Gulf residence permit in the same way.
Many Gulf-based Indian professionals already hold a valid US, UK or Schengen visa from earlier trips. If yours is valid on your arrival date, the exemption applies whatever your country of residence.[1] In that case your reservation or ticket should start and end in Dubai, Riyadh, Doha or wherever you live, since that's the city you'll be heading back to. Our guide for Gulf-based Indian expats covers residence-visa timing.
Routes from India and transit visas on the way
Flights from India to Mexico involve at least one connection, usually in North America, Europe or a Gulf hub. The connection point decides which extra paperwork you need:
- Via the United States: connecting through a US airport means passing US immigration, so you need a US visa for the transit. If you have one, you are also exempt from the Mexican visa, which makes this the simplest route for US-visa holders. See our US visa reservation guide.
- Via Europe: check whether the connecting Schengen country needs an airport transit visa for Indian passport holders before you book. Our transit and layover guide explains how to check.
- Via a Gulf hub: confirm the airline's transit rules for your passport on its own website.
Mexican visa holders should also know INM's electronic FMM form. Land arrivals fill it in at the border or online up to 30 days ahead; air arrivals get an entry stamp and can download the FMM from INM's portal within 60 days.[1][9] Keep it, since INM says it proves your legal stay.
What a Mexico flight reservation should show
- Your name exactly as printed in the passport, with every traveller in the group listed.
- Arrival in Mexico and departure from Mexico on the dates written on your visa form.
- Dates that agree with your hotel bookings, leave letter and any tour vouchers.
- A stay within the 180-day ceiling for visitors.[1]
- An airline code that loads on the carrier's website when you test it beforehand.
Don't do this: show INM a reservation that expired a week ago, or one made by a "ticket generator" with an invented code. Mexican law sends travellers with inconsistent or unauthentic documents to secondary review.[2] Check the booking yourself using our verification guide.
Step by step: Mexico visa from India
A valid US, UK, Canadian, Japanese or Schengen visa may make the Mexican visa unnecessary.
One appointment per person, on the ministry's own system.
Original, bank-stamped statements or salary evidence for the months the checklist names.
Make it shortly before the interview date, so it still opens then.
Carry it, plus hotel proof, to the INM desk.
How to get a verifiable reservation for Mexico, and the cost
We set up a held booking under your passport name, carrying a live PNR, for whichever dates and airports suit you: Delhi to Mexico City and back, say, or Dubai to Cancún. It loads on the airline's Manage booking screen. It is a reservation, not a paid ticket, so you cannot fly on it.
One traveller, one price, whether the route is single or round trip; add Oaxaca or Mérida as extra stops and those legs are billed in pairs (full price list). Settle the bill through Razorpay using UPI, a card or netbanking; the PDF reaches your inbox within roughly ten minutes. Holds last up to two weeks, with the exact length left to the airline, so time yours near the appointment. For hotel proof, see our hotel booking service; for how reservations differ from tickets, read flight reservation for visa.

Frequently asked questions
Is a flight ticket required for a Mexico visa from India?
The Mexican checklists we could read list no flight ticket; they rest on financial solvency. We could not open the New Delhi page itself in October 2026, so check it before your appointment. A reservation is a cheap way to show dates if you are asked, and it avoids paying for a ticket before you know the outcome.
Can I enter Mexico with a US visa on an Indian passport?
Yes. INM lets visitors of any nationality enter without a Mexican visa if they hold a valid US, Canadian, Japanese, UK or Schengen visa, or permanent residence in those countries or in Chile, Colombia or Peru. The visa must be valid on arrival. You still go through normal immigration questions and can be refused.
Will Mexican immigration ask for my return ticket?
It can. INM's guide says officers may ask you to prove your reason for travel with a hotel reservation, return plane tickets or tour tickets, and the migration regulations let them check how you will leave. Not every passenger is asked, but you should be ready to show it on paper or on your phone.
Is a held reservation enough at the Mexican border?
Sometimes, but we would not rely on it. The official wording is "return plane tickets", and the officer decides what satisfies it. A live, verifiable reservation is better than nothing; a paid return is better still. For the visa stage, a reservation is the sensible choice.
What bank balance does a Mexican visa need?
It depends on the mission. Washington's 2026 checklist asks for monthly balances of at least MXN 83,640 over three months or net income of MXN 27,880 a month; Nairobi's uses dollar approximations. The New Delhi figures were not readable to us, so take the amount from the embassy's own page.
I live in Dubai. Where do I apply?
Usually at the Mexican embassy serving the country where you legally reside, with proof of that residence. If you already hold a valid US, UK, Canadian, Japanese or Schengen visa, you may not need to apply at all. Start and end your reservation in your Gulf city.
How long can I stay in Mexico as a visitor?
Up to 180 days as a visitor without permission to work, whether on a visa or under the exemption. The officer decides the number of days on arrival and records it, so check your stamp or FMM before leaving the hall.
