Kolkata is the consular capital of eastern India. Applicants arrive from Patna, Ranchi, Bhubaneswar, Guwahati and Gangtok, because the missions here serve wide regions rather than one state. The catch is that every country draws its region differently. Odisha belongs to Kolkata for some countries and to Hyderabad for others; Sikkim is in for some and out for others. This guide maps that out, quotes each mission on flights, and explains which files a held reservation suits and which ones call for something more. Does your state belong to Kolkata? It depends on the country
This is the part people from outside the city get wrong. The table shows how the Kolkata missions treat three states that often cause confusion.

For a German short-stay Schengen visa none of this matters much: any VFS centre in India can take the file, and the Consulate General in Mumbai decides.[6] For national visas, though, a Sikkim address is not on the Kolkata German consulate's list, so check before you book a slot.
Italy from Kolkata: a checklist that asks for more
Most missions on this page ask for no more than a reservation. Italy's Kolkata tourist checklist for 2026 goes further. Under the air ticket heading it says: "It is recommended to provide fully paid and confirmed flight tickets," and it says the same for travel inside the Schengen area, including trains and car hire.[11]
Read that carefully. It is a recommendation, not a stated refusal rule, but it is clear about what the consulate prefers. A held reservation may not satisfy it. If you apply to Italy through VFS Kolkata or Bhubaneswar, our honest advice is to buy a refundable fare for the file, so you do not lose money if the visa is refused. Use a reservation only if your situation makes that impossible, and ask the VFS helpline what they will accept. The same checklist also wants a hotel reservation covering your dates and insurance of at least €30,000.[11]

Good news on German transit for Kolkata travellers
If your real journey changes planes in Frankfurt or Munich, note this change. The German consulate in Kolkata announced that from 3 June 2026 Indian nationals no longer need an airport transit visa to enter the transit area of a German airport during a stopover.[5] So a Kolkata–Frankfurt–Toronto routing no longer adds a German transit visa to your paperwork. It does not replace a Schengen visa if you leave the airport.
Which routes from CCU look natural?
Kolkata has fewer long-haul nonstops than Delhi or Mumbai, so most European and American itineraries connect. That's expected. Routes the airlines publish from Kolkata include:
- Dubai: Emirates sells Kolkata–Dubai, with onward connections to Europe and North America.[14]
- Singapore: Singapore Airlines flies Kolkata–Singapore nonstop.[15]
- Bangkok: Thai Airways sells Kolkata–Bangkok.[16]
- Dhaka: IndiGo flies Kolkata–Dhaka.[17]
For a Schengen file, a Kolkata–Dubai–Frankfurt or Kolkata–Delhi–Paris routing reads as perfectly ordinary. What the officer checks is the entry and exit dates, not how many stops you make.
Flying Kolkata to Bangkok? The onward-travel question
Bangkok is one of the most popular short trips from Kolkata, and here the question is the airline check-in desk, not a consulate. Thailand's embassies say that from 15 September 2026 visitors under the visa exemption scheme must be able to show they are leaving within 30 days, and those using visa on arrival need "fully paid onward travel tickets" within 15 days.[18] Every visitor also files the free TDAC within 3 days before arrival.[18] Check which scheme your passport falls under on the embassy page. Transiting the UK from Kolkata: the one case where GOV.UK wants a booking
For an ordinary UK visit, GOV.UK treats flight bookings as weak evidence. Transit is different. If you need a UK transit visa, for example on a Kolkata–London–Toronto journey with a change at Heathrow, its guidance asks for evidence that the onward flight out of Britain is "confirmed" and leaves no more than 48 hours after you land, and it mentions a travel booking confirmation as one way to show that.[4] You also need proof you can enter the country you are heading to, such as a valid visa or residence permit.[4]
Our advice for this specific case: the onward connection must be within the 48-hour window, and both legs should appear on one itinerary so the timing is obvious. Where the wording says "confirmed", a held booking may not be enough, so many travellers buy the actual ticket for a transit file, ideally after the destination visa is already in hand. Applications go through VFS Kolkata, or the premium centres in Guwahati and Bhubaneswar.[3]
Example: a Salt Lake couple applying for Germany
Say a couple in Salt Lake are visiting friends in Berlin from 2 to 16 January. They book VFS Kolkata for 12 December; the decision will come from Mumbai.[6] We would place the order on 9 or 10 December, both names on one booking, Kolkata to Berlin via a hub and back. The invitation letter, travel insurance and leave letters all show 2 to 16 January. If they had chosen Italy instead, we would tell them to buy a refundable fare, because of the Kolkata checklist wording above.

Timing a reservation around a Kolkata appointment
Its life is 2 weeks at the very most, and the operating airline determines exactly how long. If you are travelling into Kolkata from Guwahati or Patna for the appointment, order it two or three days before you set off, not the day you book the slot. If the appointment is postponed, order a new one closer to the revised date.
Coming from Guwahati, Gangtok or Shillong?
Northeast applicants often assume everything means a trip to Kolkata. Not always.
For UK visas, VFS runs a premium centre in Guwahati on Thursdays and Fridays, which can save the journey if you are willing to pay the premium fee.[3] Italy lists Guwahati among the VFS points that feed its Kolkata consulate.[19] For a US visa, all eight northeastern states are in the Kolkata district, so the interview will be in the city.[1]
Sikkim residents should look closely. The US, French and Italian consulates in Kolkata list Sikkim, but the German consulate's district does not, so for a German long-stay visa ask the embassy in New Delhi which office serves you.[1][5][8][10]
On the flight side, start the reservation where you will really begin the trip. A Guwahati–Kolkata–Dubai–Frankfurt itinerary is entirely believable. So is a plan to take the train down to Kolkata and fly from CCU, as long as the cover letter says so.
Nepal and Bhutan links
Two Kolkata consulates reach across the border. France's Kolkata district includes the whole Kingdom of Bhutan.[8] Italy's Kolkata consulate also serves Nepali citizens, and those living in Nepal apply through VFS in Kathmandu.[10] If you are a Nepali or Bhutanese national living in Kolkata, check the residence rules on the consulate page before booking, and make the reservation start from the city you will actually fly out of.
What else Italy's Kolkata checklist expects
Since Italy is the strictest mission here on flights, it helps to know the neighbouring items on the same 2026 list. It asks for overseas medical insurance with cover of €30,000 including repatriation and says a minimum of 10 days' insurance from the travel date is mandatory.[11] It wants a confirmed hotel reservation covering your dates, with bookings for any other Schengen country you visit, a travel itinerary, and a leave letter from your employer showing the sanctioned dates.[11] All of those must agree with the flights. If you buy a refundable fare, read its cancellation rules first, so you know what you would get back after a refusal.
Mistakes to avoid
- Assuming Kolkata covers your state for every country. Odisha and Sikkim are the usual surprises.
- Using a reservation where the checklist recommends a paid ticket without thinking it through.
- A route that skips your real departure city. If you live in Bhubaneswar, a Kolkata start is fine, but say so in the cover letter.
- Edited PDFs or invented PNRs. They fail a simple airline lookup.
Kolkata FAQ
Do you have a Kolkata office where I can pay in cash?

I live in Odisha. Which US consulate do I go to?
Hyderabad. The US mission places Odisha in the Hyderabad consular district, alongside Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. For Germany, France, Italy and Japan, though, Odisha is served from Kolkata, and Italy and the UK both have centres in Bhubaneswar.
Do I need a German transit visa if I connect in Frankfurt?
Not since 3 June 2026, according to the German consulate in Kolkata. Indian nationals can now stay in the transit area of a German airport during a stopover without an airport transit visa. If you leave the airport, you still need a Schengen visa.
Can I use your reservation as my onward ticket to Bangkok?
It depends on how you enter Thailand. Exemption entrants must show onward travel inside 30 days, while visa on arrival calls for fully paid onward tickets inside 15 days. Our unpaid hold may fall short of the second rule, and an airline can deny boarding over it, so purchase a proper ticket in that case.
How long is the reservation valid?
No longer than two weeks, and frequently shorter, because airlines set their own hold limits. Aim to order a couple of days before your appointment. When a date shifts, buy a fresh one for the new slot rather than trusting the earlier hold to last.
Which airlines can you use from Kolkata?
We book what is available on your dates, typically carriers that actually serve CCU, such as Emirates via Dubai, Singapore Airlines via Singapore, Thai Airways via Bangkok, or Indian carriers connecting through Delhi or Mumbai. A believable route matters more than the airline's name.
