Air France Dummy Ticket: Using an AF Reservation for a Schengen Visa

Air France is the obvious carrier to show on paper when your trip starts or ends in Paris, and a sensible one for reaching other European cities through Charles de Gaulle. Most people who ask us for an Air France reservation are building a Schengen visa file. A few are in the United States and want to know about Air France's 24-hour refund there. This guide covers both, and everything in it comes from Air France's own pages or from official French and EU sources, linked at the bottom.

Air France reservation: key facts

Does a France visa application need an Air France booking?

It needs evidence that you'll come home, and a flight reservation is the usual way to show it. You don't need Air France specifically. Any airline works, as long as the dates match the rest of your file.

The wording to know comes from a French government agency. Business France publishes a list of documents for a short-stay visa, dated May 2026, and one line wants proof of a "guarantee of repatriation", meaning a way back to where you normally live. The same list says it is indicative only and tells you to get the definitive list from the consulate handling your case.^[5] In practice, France-Visas generates that list for your profile when you fill in the online form.

At EU level, the Schengen Visa Code, in its list of proof of intent to leave, includes the line "reservation of or return or round ticket".^[7] That word "reservation" is why a held booking is normal in Schengen files. Some consulate checklists demand a paid or confirmed fare; in that case a held booking might fall short of that wording, so do what the list says. Which visa trips is Air France usually booked for?

Air France works from its Paris hub, so the reservation usually pairs one long-haul flight with a short European hop. Three patterns cover most of the requests we see.

• Paris as the main destination. A return to Charles de Gaulle for a France visa. The simplest file there is.
• Paris as a connection. An outbound to another Schengen country through Paris, like the Mumbai to Prague sample below. You still apply to the country where you'll spend the most time.^[6]
• Multi-country tours. In through Paris, out from Rome or Amsterdam. That calls for a multi-city reservation; see Schengen trips across several countries for picking the right consulate.

A practical tip from the visa desk: don't make the routing look clever. If you're from Delhi and going to Paris, a Delhi–Paris return reads naturally. A Delhi–Paris–Lyon–Nice routing with tight connections invites questions you then have to answer at the window.

How do you check an Air France booking online?

Air France calls the area My Bookings. When you're not logged in, it offers a second door labelled "Log in with my booking reference", and that's the one to use.^[1]

1. Open airfrance.com (any country version) and choose My Bookings.
2. Skip the account login and click Log in with my booking reference.
3. Type the booking reference from your PDF. Air France's own example, ACQ167, shows the format: six letters and digits.
4. Type the last name of one passenger on the booking, then press Search.
5. Check the flight numbers, dates, times and names against your visa form and hotel bookings.

The help link under that form talks about "Air France or KLM" booking references, which tells you the two partners' bookings are handled side by side. If a page asks you to accept marketing cookies first, rejecting them doesn't stop the lookup working. Our step-by-step check before submission covers other airlines too.

How should names appear on an Air France reservation?

Exactly as on the passport you're applying with. The lookup only asks for a last name, but the visa officer reads the whole name, and a mismatch with your passport is the kind of detail that sends a file back.

We couldn't find an Air France help page in October 2026 that sets out its name rules in detail, so we won't quote one. What we can say from experience is simple. Use the given names and surname in the order the passport prints them. If your passport has only one name, tell us when you order and we'll format it the way airline systems expect. What is Air France's "Time to Think" option?

It's a paid fare hold. For a fee, Air France guarantees the displayed fare, the itinerary, the cabin and the main fare conditions for a limited time, so you can finish buying later at that price.^[2]

The terms (effective 2 June 2026) are worth reading before you rely on it for a visa:

• The length of the hold isn't fixed. Air France tells you the period at the moment you pick the option, and it varies with booking date, destination and fare type.^[2]
• It can only be bought online, during booking, and some fares and passenger types can't have it.
• The fee is non-refundable and isn't deducted from the fare if you go on to buy.
• If no ticket is issued by the deadline, the booking and the guarantee expire automatically.
• Air France states plainly that the option "does not constitute the issuance of a ticket or a right to transportation".^[2]

Our view: Time to Think is a good tool for someone who has already decided to fly Air France and wants a few days to arrange the money. It isn't designed for visa files, because the hold may well run out while the consulate is still deciding, and you lose the fee whatever happens.

Does Air France offer a 24-hour refund?

Only on US routes. Air France's Customer Commitment, effective 22 January 2025, covers its flights to, from or within the USA. Under it, if you booked a flight to or from the USA on airfrance.us, "you can request a refund no later than 24 hours after completing your booking", including any paid option bought at the same time.^[3]

That commitment exists because of a US rule. The Department of Transportation requires each covered carrier, which includes foreign airlines flying to or from the United States, to adopt a customer service plan. Paragraph (b)(4) of 14 CFR 259.5 says that plan must let you keep a booking "held at the quoted fare without payment" for at least a day, or else cancel it free, provided you booked a week or more before departure.^[4] If you're booking Paris–Mumbai from India, none of this applies. Getting the Schengen dates right

The reservation only helps if it agrees with everything else. The EU's own page puts the window for applying between half a year and 15 days ahead of the flight, with a usual wait of 15 days that can run to 45 when extra checks are needed.^[6]

Here's how we'd time it. Say your VFS appointment in Bengaluru is on 20 October and you want to fly on 12 November. Order the Air France reservation on 17 or 18 October, not in September. Each booking remains live for up to 2 weeks, with Air France setting the exact period, so ordering close to the appointment means it is still live when you submit. Is an Air France reservation enough at the border?

For a visa application, it usually does its job. At an airport or a border, it may not. Some countries check for a paid exit ticket when you arrive or when you check in. New Zealand, for example, wants onward travel booked and paid for.^[9] For trips like those, buy a refundable fare. What to do once the visa is decided

Once the visa arrives, pay for the actual Air France flights, choosing dates the visa covers. Look at the sticker before you pay: if the consulate gave you 14 November to 28 November instead of the 12th to the 28th you asked for, fly on the 14th or later. Your submitted reservation needs no further action.

If the visa is refused, you have nothing to cancel with Air France because no fare was paid. Read the refusal reasons, fix what you can, and order a fresh reservation when you reapply. There's more in after a visa refusal.

A last look before you submit

• The reference opens on Air France's My Bookings page with your surname.
• Names read exactly as in the passport you're using for this application.
• Arrival and departure dates match your insurance, hotels and cover letter.
• The route ends where your file says you live.

• Paying for Time to Think and assuming it will still be live when the consulate looks.
• Ordering weeks early. Order within a few days of your appointment.
• Any document with a reference that doesn't open on airfrance.com. If you can't find it, nobody else can.

What does an Air France reservation cost with us?
