Volunteering abroad raises two separate questions, and people often mix them up. The first is which visa you need: a visitor visa, a special volunteer category, or a work-type permit. The second is what that visa's checklist asks for about flights. Get the first one wrong and no flight document will rescue the application. So this guide starts with the visa, using official rules for the UK, the US, Germany and some common volunteer destinations in Africa and Asia, then sets out exactly where a flight reservation is requested, where it is not mentioned, and where a paid ticket is the safer choice.

Which visa covers volunteering?
Start here, because it decides everything else. Most countries treat volunteering as a kind of activity, not a holiday, and many draw the line at a fixed number of days or at any form of benefit beyond expenses.
In the UK, the visitor rules allow volunteering only if it lasts 30 days or less in total and is for a charity registered with one of the three UK charity regulators.[1] Anything longer, or for an organisation outside that definition, needs a different route, usually the Charity Worker visa. In the US, the State Department's manual allows B-1 for participants in a voluntary service programme run by a recognised religious or nonprofit charitable body, provided no US salary is paid beyond an allowance for expenses.[6] Germany runs a specific national visa for structured voluntary service schemes.[8]
Elsewhere, governments are often blunter. GOV.UK's advice for Indonesia says the visa on arrival is not suitable for volunteering, and for Tanzania it says anyone planning to volunteer needs a work permit, which the host organisation should help arrange before travel.[9][10] If your placement agency suggests "just come on a tourist visa", ask it to point you to the official rule that allows that.
UK: visitor volunteering or the Charity Worker visa
As a visitor. The 30-day volunteering allowance sits in the Immigration Rules' list of permitted activities.[1] The visit visa application is then an ordinary one. Home Office guidance on visitor evidence puts "flight bookings (unless transiting)" in its weaker category.[2] So a reservation is optional. If you include one, it should simply show dates that fit inside your stated plans, including the volunteering days.
As a charity worker. GOV.UK lets you stay up to 12 months, or the length of your certificate of sponsorship plus 14 days if shorter. Applications open three months ahead of the start; the fee is £340, plus the healthcare surcharge.[3] You need £1,270 held for 28 days in a row, unless your sponsor certifies maintenance on the certificate.[4] The documents page asks for the certificate reference, passport, savings evidence, relationship proof for family, TB results where required, and translations. It does not mention flights.[5]
Plain answer for the UK: no flight document is required for either route. If you want to show your travel plan on a visit application, a reservation does that job without committing money before the decision.

USA: B-1 for voluntary service
The US Foreign Affairs Manual sets clear conditions for B-1 volunteers. You must be a member of, and committed to, a recognised religious or nonprofit charitable organisation. No salary or remuneration may come from a US source, other than an allowance or reimbursement for incidental expenses. The organisation provides a written statement giving your name, date and place of birth, foreign home address, first US destination and how long the assignment will last.[6]
None of that involves a flight. Washington's visitor guidance tells applicants to hold off buying fares until a visa is issued.[7] The written statement already tells the officer where you will be and for how long. If you want to show planned dates at the interview, a reservation matching the assignment period is enough; there is no reason to pay for a fare first.
Germany: the voluntary service national visa
German Missions in India publish a separate checklist for voluntary service. It asks for two identical sets: passport, application form and declaration, contact declaration, passport copies, a motivation letter, CV, the signed service contract and, for some schemes, proof of basic German or a statement that you do not need it. It also lists three biometric photos, a €75 fee in rupees, and travel health insurance from arrival until the service begins.[8]
The contract requirements depend on the scheme. For the Federal Voluntary Service, including weltwärts, it must be signed by you, the Federal Office of Family Affairs and Civil Society Functions, the placement and its central office. For the Voluntary Social or Ecological Year, it is you, the provider and possibly the placement.[8]
The checklist has no flight line at all.[8] Your insurance must start on arrival, though, so you need a sensible arrival date. That date belongs in your own planning and your insurance policy, not on a ticket. See our Germany visa guide for the short-stay side.
Popular volunteer destinations: what entry rules say about flights
Many volunteer placements are in East and West Africa or South-East Asia. There the volunteer status question comes first, and then the ordinary entry checks apply.
- Tanzania: GOV.UK says volunteers need a work permit, and that border officers may want to see your onward or return ticket.[10] That points to a paid ticket for the arrival itself. Read more in our Tanzania guide.

When a reservation fits a volunteer, and when it doesn't
It fits when the official wording is "itinerary", "reservation" or "booking", and when you want to show dates before the visa is decided. Say your placement in Nairobi runs from 3 March to 28 April. A reservation arriving 1 March and leaving 30 April, uploaded with the eTA alongside your host's accommodation letter, matches Kenya's "arrival & departure" request.
It does not fit when the rule is checked at the border. Tanzania's guidance about showing a return or onward ticket at border control is one example.[10] A reservation is held for a limited time, so by your arrival it may no longer exist. For border checks, carry a real ticket, ideally a fare you can change if the placement shifts.
It is unnecessary for sponsor-based routes like the UK Charity Worker visa or Germany's voluntary service visa, where the official lists have no flight line.[5][8] A clean file without extra paper is better.
Gap-year and student volunteers deserve one extra word. Parents frequently fund the trip, and placement agencies sometimes book flights as part of a package. If the agency is buying your ticket, ask it for the itinerary in writing and use that, rather than adding a separate reservation that shows different dates. Two flight documents with two sets of dates make an officer wonder which plan is real. If you are booking yourself, keep the single reservation aligned with the placement letter, the insurance start date and any accommodation note from the host.
Preparing the travel part of a volunteer application
- Confirm the right visa with your host. Ask which official rule allows your role, and how many days you will volunteer.
- Get the official document list. Look for the exact flight wording, or note that there is none.
- Match dates to the placement letter. Arrive a day or two before the start and leave soon after the end.
- Book a reservation only where it is requested or useful. Names must match passports; group volunteers can share one booking.
- Book it a few days before submitting. Expect a hold of no more than fourteen days, the length depending on the carrier.
- Check the PNR on the airline's website. Each volunteer can confirm it via the carrier's lookup page.
- Purchase the actual fare after approval. Carry it for any check-in or border question.
Volunteer travel mistakes we see
- Using a tourist visa for a role that needs a permit. No booking fixes the wrong visa.
- Dates longer than the rule allows. A UK visit with 45 days of volunteering breaks the 30-day limit.[1]
- A trip that does not match the host's letter. Officers compare dates across documents.
- Arriving with only a lapsed reservation. Border checks want travel that still exists.
- Calling a reservation a ticket. Describe it accurately in any form or letter.

Volunteer visa and flight questions
Can I volunteer in the UK on a visitor visa?
Yes, within limits. The Immigration Rules allow a visitor to volunteer for no more than 30 days in total, for a charity registered with the Charity Commission for England and Wales, the Charity Commission for Northern Ireland or the Scottish Charity Regulator. Longer or different roles need another route, such as the Charity Worker visa.
Does the UK Charity Worker visa need a flight booking?
No. GOV.UK's documents list covers the certificate of sponsorship reference, passport, savings evidence, family relationship proof, TB results where required and translations. It says nothing about flights. You need £1,270 held for 28 consecutive days unless your sponsor certifies maintenance on the certificate.
Can I volunteer in the US on a B visa?
Only in specific cases. The State Department's manual allows B-1 for members of a recognised religious or nonprofit charitable organisation taking part in its voluntary service programme, with no US salary beyond expense allowances. The organisation must give a written statement with your details and assignment length.
Is a flight reservation enough for a Kenya volunteer trip?
For the eTA form, Kenya wants arrival and departure details plus somewhere to stay, so a verifiable reservation fits that request. Whether your role needs a permit is a separate question to settle with your host and Kenya's immigration department. For the flight itself, buy a ticket once the eTA is approved.
Do German voluntary service visas ask for a ticket?
The German Missions in India checklist does not. It asks for a passport, forms, motivation letter, CV, the signed service contract, photos, a €75 fee and health insurance from arrival until the service starts. Plan your arrival date for the insurance, but there is no flight line to fill.
We are a group of volunteers. Can we share one reservation?
Yes. A team can travel on a single booking; we bill per volunteer and copy every passport name precisely. Make sure every volunteer's dates match their own placement letter. If some members arrive later, separate bookings are cleaner than one reservation that fits nobody.
How long is your reservation valid?
No longer than two weeks, and carriers set their own span. Book it shortly before you submit, and if your appointment or upload is delayed, take a new one for the right dates. Do not rely on it for arrival checks weeks later.
Price and how to order
Volunteers get a held seat on their chosen route and dates, in their own name, with a PNR the airline's website can find. Nothing is paid to the carrier, so it never works as a boarding pass.
