Dummy Ticket for Turkish Travellers: Exit Fee, Schengen Queues and Flights

Turkish citizens can usually use a flight reservation for visa applications: German missions in Türkiye ask for proof of flight or travel reservations, and the Netherlands says a paid ticket is not needed. Leaving Türkiye needs no return ticket, only the departure fee (TL 1,250 in 2026). Book the reservation a few days before your appointment.

Turkish passport holders deal with flights in a slightly unusual way. Leaving Türkiye is simple: there is no exit permit, just a departure fee you pay before the trip. The hard part is the Schengen queue. German missions in Türkiye now run waiting lists that can stretch for months, which changes when you should book anything at all. This guide walks through the departure fee, what the visa checklists for Germany, the Netherlands, the UK, the US and Canada actually say about flights, where Turkish citizens can travel without a visa, and how to time a flight reservation so it is live on the day it matters.

What do you need to leave Türkiye?

A valid passport, any visa your destination requires, and a paid departure fee. Türkiye does not ask its own citizens for an exit visa or a return ticket on the way out. Border police check your passport; the airline checks that you can enter where you are going.

The departure fee is the part people forget. It is called the yurt dışı çıkış harcı, and a communiqué in the Resmî Gazete of 31 December 2025 changed the amount to TL 1,250 with effect from 1 January 2026.[1] The Revenue Administration (GİB) lets you pay it online through its Digital Tax Office, alongside other channels.[2] Pay it a few days before you fly rather than at the airport, and keep the receipt on your phone. The amount can change at the start of a year, so check GİB before each trip.

None of this involves a flight reservation. Where flights matter for a Turkish traveller is at the consulate of the country you want to visit, and at check-in when you fly somewhere visa-free.

Why does the Schengen waiting list change how you book flights?

Because you may register months before you actually hand in documents. The German missions in Türkiye explain that you first register on the waiting list of the competent mission, and appointments are given out in order of registration. They say this wait can be up to eleven months, and that applying too late may mean the application is rejected as inadmissible or processed only after your trip.[3]

Here is the practical consequence. A flight reservation booked when you join the list will be long gone by the appointment. Each of our holds lasts two weeks at most, with the carrier setting the precise window, so an early booking buys you nothing. Register, wait, and book the reservation only when the appointment date is fixed and a few days away.

Say you register on the list in March and get an appointment for 6 November, for a trip from 10 to 24 December. We'd book the reservation on 3 or 4 November for those December dates, look it up on the carrier's site the same night, then file the printout with your other papers. That is an example of the timing, not a real case.

Which visas do Turkish citizens need, and how do the checklists word the flight item?

These are the destinations Turkish travellers most often need a visa for, with the flight wording we found on official pages this month.

Germany

The tourism page of the German missions in Türkiye is helpful because of how loosely it words the flight item. It asks for proof of flight bookings or reservations, other evidence of transport, or a travel plan.[4] In plain terms, a reservation in your name that shows how you reach the Schengen area and how you leave it is enough to answer that line. The same page asks for a hotel booking, hotel reservation or other proof of accommodation. Make sure the hotel nights and the flight dates line up exactly.

The page also stresses that the purpose you state must match your documents and the category you booked. A tourist file with a business invitation inside it is the kind of mismatch that causes trouble.[3]

The Netherlands and the rest of Schengen

The Dutch tourism checklist leaves least room for doubt. Dutch officials want the inbound and outbound legs held in your name, and they say plainly that you needn't pay for them yet.[7] Other states vary. EU-wide, you can lodge a file from six months out, and should do so by the fifteenth day before you leave; Brussels puts the normal decision time at 15 days, stretching to 45 in harder cases.[6] In Türkiye, the queue for an appointment is often the real constraint, so start early.

The cascade: why your next visa may be longer

The EU adopted more favourable rules for Turkish citizens in July 2025. Turkish nationals who live in Türkiye, apply there and have used two visas lawfully in the previous three years can get a one-year multiple-entry visa. After that, a three-year and then a five-year visa can follow, if each earlier visa was used properly and the passport is valid long enough. Truck drivers are excluded.[5]

This matters for flights in one way. Each visa you use correctly builds your record, and a file whose dates match the trip you really took is part of that. Book the reservation for the trip you intend, and if your plans change after the visa, travel within the visa's terms.

UK, US and Canada

For the UK, we'd leave flights out of a visitor application. The Home Office's own document guide for visitors puts flight bookings on its list of unhelpful evidence, transit applications aside.[9] Washington's advice to US visa applicants is to hold off on purchasing flights until the visa is in the passport.[10] Bringing a printed itinerary to the consulate is fine for quick reference on dates, yet no officer requires it. IRCC's supporting-documents page for Canadian visitor visas mentions an itinerary, and flight details can form part of that.[11]

Where can you go visa-free, and will anyone ask for onward travel?

Turkish passports open several visa-free trips where an onward or return flight is checked instead of a visa.

  • Thailand. Türkiye is on the list of countries covered by the revised 30-day exemption effective 15 September 2026.[12] Under that scheme, Thai guidance lists somewhere booked to stay, a departure booked inside the 30 days, THB 20,000 per head in funds, and a TDAC filed in the three days before landing.[13]
  • Japan. Türkiye appears on Japan's list of countries with visa exemption for short stays, with a 90-day period of stay; read the notes attached to the entry before you travel.[14]
  • Singapore. Turkish nationals are absent from the list of passports ICA requires to hold a visa. Singapore's immigration authority expects visitors to show how they will leave, and the SG Arrival Card goes in during the three days ahead of arrival.[15][16]

In these places the check usually happens twice: once at check-in in Istanbul, where the airline confirms you meet the entry rules, and again at the arrival desk. A reservation for an onward flight answers "proof of onward travel" in most cases. If you are flying one way to Bangkok and still choosing between Bali and Hanoi for the next leg, that is exactly the situation a reservation suits. With a fixed date home, just pay for the return flight. Our onward travel guide and onward ticket page explain the airline side.

Should a checklist ever demand a paid or confirmed ticket, a reservation on hold might fall short of that wording. None of the Turkish-facing lists we read in October 2026 went that far, though lists do get revised. Our reservation versus refundable fare page covers the middle column in detail.

How do you put the flight part of the file together?

  1. Get your appointment first. With German missions, that means registering on the waiting list and waiting for your slot.
  2. Download the checklist for your purpose. Use the mission's own page, not a copy from a forum.
  3. Fix dates that agree everywhere: leave letter, hotel, insurance and itinerary.
  4. Reserve the flights between two and four days ahead of the slot. Copy names exactly as printed in the passport, including both surnames if you have them.
  5. Open it on the airline's own website with the booking reference and surname, and save a screenshot.
  6. Describe it accurately as a flight reservation in the cover letter and forms.
  7. With the visa in hand, purchase your actual flights and settle the departure fee ahead of airport day.

A note on Turkish letters. Passports print names in capitals and the machine-readable zone drops letters such as Ş, Ğ and İ. Airline systems do the same, so ŞAHİN will appear as SAHIN on the reservation. That is normal. What matters is that the spelling matches the Latin form in your passport.

What goes wrong most often?

  • Booking when you join the waiting list. The hold ends months before the appointment.
  • Dates that drift. A hotel from 10 December and a flight on the 11th invite questions.
  • Sending flights to UK Visas and Immigration. GOV.UK says they don't help.
  • Buying a "ticket" that can't be found on the airline site. If the PNR doesn't open, don't submit it.
  • Forgetting the departure fee and queuing for it on the day of the flight.
  • Mixing purposes, such as a tourist application with business papers inside.

How do you order a reservation from Türkiye?

Use our booking form. Pick the route, for example Istanbul to Munich and back, and enter each passenger as the passport shows. Outside India and the Gulf we charge $9 for each traveller, the same for one-way and return; on a multi-city plan, each pair of legs counts as one unit. Payment goes through Razorpay by card; a Turkish card enabled for international online payments is the easiest option. Expect a PDF naming the carrier and the PNR within roughly 10 minutes of paying; meanwhile the order status page shows where it is.

Many reservations from Istanbul are built on Turkish Airlines flights, and those can be looked up on the carrier's own Manage booking page.[8] Our Turkish Airlines guide explains how its booking lookup works. Background reading: our visa reservation overview, local-currency prices, flight reservations for visa files and country-by-country requirements. If you need accommodation proof too, there are hotel bookings for visa files. Visitors coming the other way should read our Turkey visa guide.

Frequently asked questions

Do Turkish citizens need a return ticket to leave Türkiye?

No official rule we found asks Turkish citizens for a return ticket at exit control. You need a valid passport, any visa your destination requires, and a paid departure fee, which was TL 1,250 from 1 January 2026. At check-in, though, the carrier confirms you satisfy the arrival country's rules.

Does the German consulate in Istanbul accept a flight reservation?

The tourism page of the German missions in Türkiye asks for proof of flight or travel reservations, other transport evidence or a travel plan. That wording covers a reservation in your name. The consulate decides on the whole file, so make sure your dates, hotel and insurance agree and the booking opens on the airline site.

When should I book if the waiting list is months long?

Wait until the appointment is fixed, then book two to four days before it. Since our hold ends within a fortnight, on a date the airline chooses, reserving on registration day just burns $9. If the appointment moves, book again for the new date.

Can I get a five-year Schengen visa as a Turkish citizen?

Under the cascade adopted in July 2025, yes, eventually. After two visas used lawfully within three years, you can get a one-year visa, then a three-year and a five-year visa. It applies to Turkish nationals living and applying in Türkiye, excluding truck drivers, and the consulate still decides each case.

Do flight bookings help a Turkish UK visitor application?

Not really. The UK's guidance for visitors classes flight bookings as unhelpful evidence, transit applications being the one exception. Spend your effort on proof of funds, employment and ties to Türkiye instead, and buy the ticket after the visa is granted.

Is a reservation enough for a visa-free trip to Thailand?

The Thai scheme wants evidence that you depart within 30 days, and travellers commonly show a reservation under their own name to meet it. The airline at Istanbul may check it too. If you already know your return date, a paid return ticket removes any doubt at both ends.

How much does a reservation cost in Türkiye?

A Turkish traveller pays $9 per head, one way or return alike, while multi-city itineraries are billed per two legs. Card payment runs through Razorpay, the document reaches your inbox in about 10 minutes, and the booking form displays the hold length for your chosen route before checkout.
