If you're applying to visit Canada, Air Canada is the airline most people picture on their itinerary, and as a Star Alliance member it links up with many partner airlines abroad. We get two kinds of Air Canada requests. Applicants abroad want an itinerary into Toronto, Montréal or Vancouver for a visitor visa. People already living in Canada or the US want an Air Canada routing to Europe for a Schengen or other visa. Below, we take both in turn, quoting Air Canada and the Government of Canada directly.
Air Canada reservation: key facts
| Question | Air Canada or official answer |
|---|---|
| Where is the lookup? | "Manage my bookings" on aircanada.com: booking reference plus last name. Changing or cancelling a guest booking also asks for the card number used to pay.[1][2] |
| What is the booking reference? | "A sequence comprised of six letters and/or numbers", printed on the Itinerary/Receipt.[2] |
| Name rule | "The name on each passenger's passport must match the name used to make the reservation."[3] |
| 24-hour refund | Tickets can be cancelled up to 24 hours after purchase for a full refund without penalty.[4] |
| Paid fare hold | We didn't find one on aircanada.com in October 2026. |
| Canada visitor visa | IRCC's recommended "Itinerary" documents include flight details.[5] |
| Alliance | Star Alliance.[9] |
Does IRCC want a flight booking for a Canada visitor visa?
It recommends one, without demanding a paid ticket. On the "Apply for a visitor visa" page, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada has a section of recommended documents, and under the heading "Itinerary" it asks you to include copies of any of flight details, proof of accommodation, or registration for an event.[5] The point of them is to give the officer a picture of the length and purpose of your visit.
So a reservation is the right weight of evidence. It shows the officer your intended dates without you sinking money into a fare before you know the outcome. Canadian visitor visa processing times vary widely by country, and IRCC publishes the current estimate, so we wouldn't buy anything non-refundable while you wait. Our Canada visa guide covers the rest of the file: travel history, bank statements, invitation letters.
Let the dates tell one consistent story. Say your parents are visiting you in Brampton for six weeks from 10 December. The invitation letter, your proof of status in Canada, their leave or retirement papers and the Air Canada itinerary should all show that same window, arriving around the 10th and leaving in late January. An officer who sees a six-week invitation and a three-month flight plan will wonder which one is true. If plans are still fluid, pick the dates you'd genuinely aim for and use them everywhere. It's also fine to show a connection on a partner airline if that's how you'd really travel; what matters is that the route is believable from your home city.
A word on what matters more. A neat itinerary is supporting material. The officer is far more interested in your reasons to return home, your funds and your travel history. Spend your effort there.
What about the eTA and Canadian transit visas?
If your passport is visa-exempt, you don't apply for a visitor visa at all. Air Canada's travel documents page says visa-exempt foreign citizens "must obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) prior to boarding a flight to Canada".[3] The eTA form doesn't need a flight reservation, so you won't need one from us for that.
Transit is different. If you need a transit visa to change planes in Canada, IRCC's application guide says: "To obtain a transit visa you must provide specific evidence of your travel itinerary from your transportation company or travel agent."[6] Here the onward flight is central. Example: a traveller from Lagos going to Mexico City through Toronto would show both legs, with the connection timing clear. See transit visa reservations for more.

How do you look up an Air Canada booking?
Air Canada's site has a "Manage my bookings" area that opens a single booking without signing in to an account.[1][2]
- On aircanada.com, click Manage my bookings in the top bar.
- Choose the option to access a single flight booking.
- Type the booking reference: six letters and/or numbers, shown on the itinerary PDF.
- Type the passenger's last name and continue.
- Compare what loads with your application: route, date, flight numbers, names.
One quirk worth knowing. Air Canada's cancellation page says that for guest bookings it wants "your booking reference, last name, and the number of the credit card used to make the booking".[1] That card step is a safeguard before anyone can change or cancel. You only need to view the booking, so that card screen isn't something you have to get past. If anything won't load, message us on WhatsApp and we'll check it with you. The general walkthrough is in how to check a reservation before you submit.
How strict is Air Canada about names?
Strict. Its travel documents page is explicit that each passenger's passport name has to match the name on the reservation, and that the same applies to any other ID shown at check-in or the gate. Air Canada also sets minimums: a first name of at least 1 letter and a last name of at least 2.[3]
For a visa reservation, copy the passport. Given names go in the first-name field and the surname in the last-name field, in the passport's spelling. If your passport shows a single name only, flag it on our order form so we can set it up the way Air Canada's system accepts. Married recently? Use whichever surname is printed in the passport you'll submit, not the one you'd like to use later. The name format guide has more examples, including names with apostrophes and hyphens.
Can you cancel an Air Canada booking within 24 hours?
Yes, and Air Canada words it simply. Its Customer Service Plan states: "You may cancel your purchase of tickets up to 24 hours after purchase and Air Canada will provide you with a full refund without penalty."[4] The online cancellation page repeats the promise: cancel within 24 hours of purchase and the ticket price is refunded or the payment transaction is cancelled.[1]
Why a Canadian airline has a US-style plan: Washington's Department of Transportation makes every "covered carrier", which includes non-US airlines serving American airports, publish such a plan. Rule 14 CFR 259.5(b)(4) then sets the minimum: a booking made seven or more days out can be kept unpaid, or it can be "cancelled without penalty", during the first "twenty-four hours after the reservation is made".[7] Air Canada's own wording is broader than that minimum, since it doesn't mention the one-week condition.
What we found no sign of is a paid fare hold. In October 2026 we couldn't find an Air Canada product that locks a price for days without buying. If you see one on the site when you book, use Air Canada's terms, not ours.
| Approach | Money spent | Window | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Buy, then cancel within 24 hours | Full fare charged, refunded on cancellation[4] | 24 hours from purchase | Correcting a booking error |
| Reservation from us | ₹699 / $9 / £7 per passenger | Up to 2 weeks; Air Canada decides the exact period | Itineraries for visa files |
| Refundable Air Canada fare | Full fare; refund per fare rules | Until departure | Checklists that require a paid ticket |
| Paid fare hold | Not found on aircanada.com | n/a | n/a |
Plainly put, the 24-hour refund solves typos and second thoughts. It's no use for a visa that takes weeks, and buying a fare just to cancel it tomorrow leaves you with nothing to show by the time the officer opens your file.
Using Air Canada for a Schengen or UK visa from Canada
If you live in Canada on a work or study permit and need a Schengen visa, an Air Canada flight to Europe is the natural itinerary. Under EU guidance you may lodge the file as early as half a year before flying and with 15 days to spare at the latest; most decisions come in 15 calendar days, a few in up to 45.[8] Our Schengen guide quotes what individual consulates ask for.
The United Kingdom works differently. GOV.UK's guidance on supporting documents for visits names flight bookings, unless you're transiting, among the evidence it finds less useful.[10] So if your trip is Toronto to London on a Standard Visitor visa, you can leave the flights out and describe your dates in the application. Our UK visa guide explains why.

When should you order the Air Canada reservation?
A few days before you submit. Our bookings remain valid for up to 2 weeks, with Air Canada fixing the precise period, so a reservation ordered a month early may have lapsed when the officer looks.
Example: your biometrics appointment is booked for Friday, 6 November, and you plan to upload the application the same weekend. Order on Tuesday or Wednesday that week. If IRCC asks for more documents later, or your appointment slips, get a new reservation that matches the revised date instead of hoping the first is still open. For hotel nights to go with it, our hotel reservations are charged per stay.
Is it proof of onward travel at an airport?
Usually not, if the rule says paid. A visa officer reading an itinerary and a check-in agent applying an entry rule are doing different jobs. Some countries want a ticket you've paid for at arrival; New Zealand, for instance, says onward travel must be booked and paid for.[11] In those cases buy a refundable ticket. The onward ticket page sets out the difference, and one-way travellers have their own guide.
After IRCC or the consulate decides
Approved? Buy your Air Canada ticket for travel inside the visa's dates. Check the visa's expiry date before you pick a return date. Nothing further is needed for the reservation we sent.
Refused? There's no Air Canada fare to cancel, because none was bought. Read the officer's reasons, and if you reapply, order a new itinerary close to the new submission. Our page on reapplying after a refusal goes through it.
Pre-submission checklist

- First and last names agree, letter for letter, with your passport.
- Dates line up with the purpose of travel letter, hotels and leave approval.
- For transit, both legs and the connection time are visible.
- Paying a full fare only to cancel it after a day.

Price of an Air Canada reservation
Air Canada costs the same as any carrier with us, per traveller, whether one way or return:
For multi-city plans, each pair of legs is priced as one. Full details on the pricing page.
- Fill in route and dates on the reservation form and request Air Canada.
- Write each name precisely as printed in the passport.
- Pay through Razorpay with UPI, card or netbanking.

Air Canada dummy ticket FAQ
Is a flight booking required for a Canada visitor visa?
IRCC lists flight details as a recommended itinerary document, alongside proof of accommodation and event registration, rather than a mandatory paid ticket. A reservation shows your planned dates without committing money before the decision. Your ties to home, finances and travel history carry much more weight than the flights themselves.
How do I check an Air Canada reservation online?
Go to aircanada.com, open Manage my bookings and choose to access a single booking. Enter the six-character booking reference and the passenger's last name. If you're trying to change or cancel a guest booking, Air Canada also asks for the card used to pay, which is a security step.
Does Air Canada let you cancel within 24 hours for a refund?
Yes. Air Canada's Customer Service Plan says you can cancel tickets up to 24 hours after purchase for a full refund without penalty, and its cancellation page confirms the refund goes back to the payment. After 24 hours, what you get back depends on the fare you bought.
Can Air Canada hold a fare for me without payment?
We couldn't find a paid or free fare-hold product on aircanada.com in October 2026. What Air Canada offers instead is the 24-hour cancellation with a full refund. For a visa itinerary that needs to stay live longer than a day, a reservation is the more practical choice.
Do I need a flight reservation for a Canadian eTA?
No. The eTA is an online authorisation for visa-exempt travellers, and Air Canada notes it must be obtained before boarding a flight to Canada. The form doesn't ask you to upload flights. Keep your money for the real ticket once your trip is fixed.
What name should appear on the Air Canada booking?
The name printed in your passport. Air Canada says each passenger's passport name must match the name on the reservation, and it needs at least one letter for the first name and two for the last. Put given names and surname in the right fields, spelled the same way.
Can I board an Air Canada flight with this reservation?
No. It hasn't been paid for, so it isn't valid for travel and check-in won't accept it. Its job is to show a visa officer your planned flights. After approval, buy a ticket directly from Air Canada or a travel agent for the dates you'll fly.
