Dummy Ticket for Visa in Vancouver: Swiss-Run German Files, Italy's Strict Checklist and YVR Routes for BC Residents

Vancouver residents can get a $9 held flight reservation with a live PNR, paid by card and emailed in about 10 minutes. Italy's Vancouver consulate accepts a "personalized flight reservation" if you also prove you can pay for the ticket, and German Schengen files from BC go through the Swiss consulate's VFS Global centre.

Western Canada has its own visa map, and it is not a smaller copy of Toronto's. If you live in Vancouver, Surrey, Burnaby or Richmond on a PR card, work permit or study permit, several Schengen countries handle you through offices you might not expect, and one of them publishes the most detailed flight rules we have read anywhere in Canada. This guide walks through who takes your file, what each checklist says about flights word for word, the status papers BC applicants must show, and the routes out of YVR. We sell reservations online only; there is no Vancouver office.

Why does a German visa from BC start at the Swiss consulate?

Germany has a consulate general in Vancouver, but it does not take Schengen applications from western Canada. The German missions' own page sends residents of Alberta, British Columbia, the Northwest Territories, Saskatchewan and Yukon to the Consulate General of Switzerland in Vancouver instead.[1]

Two practical points follow. First, since 4 September 2025 VFS Global processes the Swiss visa applications. Second, the German page tells you to "choose Switzerland as your destination on the VFS website" when booking, even if Germany is where you are going.[1] People pick "Germany" on the VFS site, find nothing for Vancouver, and assume there are no slots. There are; they sit under Switzerland.

The residence rule is the same as elsewhere in Canada. Germany accepts only residents: permanent residents and holders of a valid study or work permit, plus long-term visitors who have been in Canada for six continuous months and can show a CBSA travel history.[2] For the document list, follow what the Swiss-run VFS centre gives you for your German application, and if anything is unclear, ask before the appointment rather than at the counter.

What does Italy's Vancouver checklist say about flights?

Italy's Vancouver visa office updated its tourism list on 9 March 2026, and it is unusually specific. Item 7 reads, in part: "A personalized round-trip flight ticket to Italy, or other proof of intended transport, must be provided." It then adds that, as an alternative, you "may submit a personalized flight reservation, booking confirmation, or detailed flight itinerary issued by a reputable travel agency for visa application purposes."[3]

There is a condition attached. If you choose the reservation route, you "must provide proof of sufficient financial resources to cover the cost of the airline ticket for the intended travel dates."[3] In plain terms: hold the seat, but show the officer you could buy it. A recent bank statement with a balance comfortably above the fare does that job.

The same item insists the booking carries your "LEGAL name, exactly as it appears in the passport (nicknames are not accepted)". The consulate also warns that buying a ticket early, or prepaying anything non-refundable, will not guarantee a visa.[3] We agree with that warning. A held booking plus a solid bank balance is the sensible combination for most BC applicants.

A few other lines on that list catch people out:

  • Provincial photo ID issued inside the consular area (AB, BC, SK or YT), such as a driver's licence or services card.[3]
  • Hard copies only. Screenshots, phones, laptops and USB drives are refused.[3]
  • A daily itinerary if you are visiting several Schengen states.[3]
  • Fee in Canadian dollars by cash, bank draft or money order payable to the consulate.[3]

Which Canadian status papers do BC applicants need?

Italy's Vancouver list is the clearest statement of this we found. It asks for a valid PR card, or a long-term Canadian residence permit issued for work or study, with a visitor record over six months accepted in a few listed cases.[3] The card or permit has to outlast your trip by three months or more, counted from your return to Canada.[3]

It also reminds you that a work permit, study permit or visitor record "is NOT a travel document" and that you may need a valid re-entry visa or an eTA to come back.[3] IRCC says the same: a work permit doesn't give you the right to travel to Canada, so you need a temporary resident visa or eTA alongside it.[9] Permanent residents flying home need a valid PR card plus passport, or a permanent resident travel document.[10]

The Netherlands, the UK and the US from Vancouver

Netherlands. Residents of Canada apply at VFS Global, and Vancouver is one of four Canadian locations.[4] The Dutch tourism checklist is relaxed about flights: it asks for a booking under your name that shows the way in and the way out, and states plainly: "You do not need a paid travel ticket".[5]

United Kingdom. GOV.UK wants non-nationals to show "confirmation of legal residence" in the country they apply from, and it files flight bookings under less useful evidence unless you are transiting.[6] So your PR card or permit goes in; the flight usually stays out.

United States. With Seattle just across the border, plenty of BC residents need a US visitor visa. Book where you live or where your passport is from, says the US mission in Canada; for applicants based elsewhere it quotes a wait of roughly 600 calendar days.[7] The interview itself needs no flight booking, and Washington recommends waiting for the visa before you spend anything on fares.[8]

Routes out of YVR that suit a visa itinerary

YVR describes itself as offering non-stop service to 103 global destinations for the 2025/2026 winter season.[13] Two routes matter to many of our Vancouver customers.

Manila. Air Canada launched a non-stop YVR–Manila service on 1 April 2025, announced as year-round and four times weekly on a Boeing 787.[11] For a Filipino family planning Europe and a stop at home, that gives a natural way to finish the itinerary.

Delhi. Air Canada flew the first non-stop from Vancouver to Delhi in October 2016.[12] Schedules on long routes change by season, so look at the airline's current timetable before choosing dates.

For Europe, a Vancouver itinerary usually connects somewhere, either in a European hub or in eastern Canada. That is fine for every checklist on this page. What the consulate cares about is that your arrival in and departure from Schengen match the form, and that the name matches the passport.

Example: a Surrey family visiting Italy

An illustration, not a real customer. Gurpreet and Simran are permanent residents in Surrey with two children, all on Indian passports. They plan Rome and Venice from 4 to 16 July. Italy is the only destination, they live in BC, so the Vancouver consulate is theirs.[3]

Their slot is on 10 June. On 7 June they order one reservation for all four, Vancouver to Rome and back, every name as printed in each passport. Because Italy asks for proof that they could pay for the fare, they add a fresh bank statement and an account summary stamped by the bank, which item 9 of the list asks for anyway.[3] The children's birth certificates show the family link. The Venice leg goes into a one-page daily itinerary. Everything is printed; nothing is shown on a phone.

Example: a Burnaby caregiver applying for Germany

Second illustration. Joy is a Filipino caregiver in Burnaby on a work permit, with a visitor visa counterfoil valid until next year. She wants a week in Berlin. Her file goes to the Swiss consulate's VFS centre, booked under "Switzerland" on the VFS site.[1]

She checks that her permit and counterfoil both run more than three months past her return, because a lapsed counterfoil would stop her boarding the flight home to YVR.[9] She places the order 48 hours ahead of her slot: a return booking from Vancouver to Berlin through a European hub, under her full passport name. After the visa arrives she buys a ticket, perhaps adding a stop in Manila on the way back.

What to bring to a Vancouver appointment

Italy's rule about paper copies is the strictest in town, so we'd prepare every Vancouver file as if it applied.

  • Printed reservation with every legal name and the airline's booking code.
  • Recent bank statements that make the fare obviously affordable.
  • PR card or permit, original and copy, plus the visitor visa page if you have one.
  • BC-issued photo ID such as a driver's licence or services card.
  • Insurance certificate showing at least €30,000 of cover for the whole stay.

Pull the booking up on the carrier's website the evening before you go. If the airline has shifted a flight, you can sort it out from home in Richmond instead of explaining it at the counter.

Ordering from Vancouver, step by step

  1. Work out the right office: Swiss VFS for Germany, the Italian consulate for Italy, VFS for the Netherlands.
  2. Check validity of your PR card or permit three months past your return.
  3. Open the latest checklist and note its exact wording on flights.
  4. Complete our booking form: route, dates, legal names.
  5. Pay $9 per passenger by card.
  6. Collect the PDF from your inbox about 10 minutes later.
  7. Retrieve the booking yourself on the airline's website; here is how.
  8. Print it, because Italy refuses screenshots and phones.

Order status is on our tracker. Other currencies are listed on the price page; hotel holds are on the hotel booking page.

When should a Vancouver applicant order?

About three days before the appointment. Holds last up to 2 weeks; the exact window is the airline's call. Consulate slots in Vancouver can be weeks out, so ordering on booking day risks a lapsed hold by the time you sit down. Italy also wants employer and enrolment letters dated within two weeks of the interview,[3] so it makes sense to gather the flight, the letters and the bank papers in the same week. The EU allows a Schengen file up to six months ahead and wants it at least 15 days before departure.[14]

Common slip-ups in BC

  • Searching VFS for "Germany" and finding no Vancouver option. Choose Switzerland.
  • Bringing an Ontario driver's licence to Italy's Vancouver office, which wants ID issued inside its area.
  • A reservation without proof of funds for an Italian file.
  • Nicknames such as "Joy" when the passport reads "Joyce".
  • Digital copies at a counter that only takes paper.

Vancouver FAQ

Does Italy's Vancouver consulate accept a flight reservation?

Yes, as an alternative to a paid ticket. Its March 2026 tourism list allows a personalised flight reservation, booking confirmation or detailed itinerary in your legal passport name. If you go that way, you must also prove you have enough money to buy the ticket for your travel dates, so include recent bank statements.

Where do I apply for a German Schengen visa if I live in BC?

At the Consulate General of Switzerland in Vancouver, through VFS Global since 4 September 2025. Germany's Canadian site tells BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Yukon and Northwest Territories residents to choose Switzerland on the VFS website when booking, even when Germany is the destination.

Can I apply in Vancouver if I live in Calgary?

For Germany, yes: Alberta residents use the Swiss consulate in Vancouver. For Italy, Alberta also falls within the Vancouver consulate's area, though the list gives a separate Edmonton email address for Alberta and Saskatchewan applicants' invitation letters. Check the latest page before you book.

Is a Filipino work permit holder able to fly home to YVR on a work permit alone?

No. In IRCC's words, the permit is not a document you can travel on. You also need a valid visitor visa counterfoil, or an eTA if your passport qualifies. Renew an expiring counterfoil before you travel, and pick Schengen dates that fall well inside its validity.

Should a UK visa file from Vancouver include flights?

Generally not. GOV.UK puts flight bookings on its list of less useful documents, except for transit cases. What it does want, if you are not Canadian, is confirmation of your legal residence in Canada, such as your PR card or permit.

How much is a reservation and how do I pay from Canada?

$9 per traveller, one way or return; a multi-city route costs $9 per pair of legs. You pay by card through Razorpay and receive a PDF with the airline and booking reference by email, usually within 10 minutes.

Can I fly out of YVR on it?

No. The seat is held under a real reference, but nobody has paid the fare, so the airline will not check you in. Buy the actual ticket once your visa is granted.

Applying from the Lower Mainland?

$9 per person, paid by card, checkable on the airline's own site.

A fair warning: a reservation shows a plan, nothing more. Present it as a reservation, back it with real funds and ties, and leave the verdict to the visa office.

Dummy ticket price for applicants in Canada

If your phone number is a Canada number (+1), a flight reservation costs $9 per passenger, one way or round trip. The price follows the country of your phone number, not where you are flying, so a Vancouver applicant pays the same for Dubai, London or Toronto. Multi-city itineraries are priced per pair of flights and a hotel booking costs the same per stay.

Why a live reservation beats a free "ticket generator"

A generated ticket has no PNR. A visa officer who checks it finds nothing, and a refusal for a false document is the hardest kind to appeal.
