If you hold an Omani residence card and need a Schengen, UK or US visa, Muscat is where the paperwork happens. The capital hosts the embassies and the outsourced centres, mostly clustered around Al-Khuwair and Al Wattaya, and residents from across the Sultanate come here to give fingerprints. This guide is written for people who live in the Muscat governorate: which centre takes your file, what each checklist really says about flights, which papers your employer must sign, and how to order a reservation from MCT. We work online only, with no counter in Oman.
Muscat applicants: quick reference
| Item | Detail (last checked October 2026) |
|---|---|
| Airport | Muscat International Airport (MCT), run by the state-owned Oman Airports.[1] |
| Germany and Iceland | VFS Global, Panorama Mall, Level 1, Dohat al Adab Street, Al-Khuwair; appointment required.[2] |
| Netherlands | VFS Global application centre in Muscat, for residents of Oman and Yemen.[3] |
| Italy | VFS Global is the only agency the embassy authorises to receive visa applications.[4] |
| Spain, Finland, Lithuania, Malta, Slovenia | BLS International, Al Tamimah Building, B Block, 4th floor, Al Wattaya.[6][7] |
| France | Embassy consular section decides; files lodged at VFS Global Oman.[8] |
| United Kingdom | VFS-run centre in Muscat.[9] |
| Our price | OMR 3.5 a passenger, whether single or return |
Which Muscat centre takes your file?
Under Schengen rules, your file goes to the state where you will stay longest, lodged with that state's mission for your place of residence.[10] In Muscat that splits roughly like this.
Al-Khuwair, Panorama Mall. The German Embassy points Oman residents to VFS on Level 1, and its Muscat mission also handles travellers whose main destination is Iceland.[2] France's centre has been at VFS Oman as well.[8]
Al Wattaya, Al Tamimah Building. BLS International handles Spain here, and its tourist checklist covers four more states: Finland, Lithuania, Malta and Slovenia.[7] That surprises people who expect Finland to sit with Germany or the Nordics.
VFS for Italy and the Netherlands. Italy names VFS Global as its only authorised agency for visa applications, though family, study and work visas can go straight to the embassy's visa section.[4] The Netherlands also uses VFS in Muscat.[3]
Living in Salalah or elsewhere in Dhofar? You still submit in Muscat. Our Salalah page deals with that trip, and the Oman country page covers the rest of the Sultanate.
The flight lines, quoted
| Destination | Checklist wording on flights | Our read |
|---|---|---|
| Italy (non-Omani residents, 2026 list) | "Return ticket (or booking)", or evidence of your own transport[5] | A booking is expressly enough |
| Italy (embassy page) | Evidence of the stay such as a "return airplane ticket, hotel reservation, invitation letters"[4] | Read with the checklist above |
| Spain and four others (BLS) | A full-page photocopy of "your booking of return ticket"[7] | A full-page copy of the booking |
| Netherlands | "You do not need a paid travel ticket."[11] | Reservation fits |
| United Kingdom | "flight bookings (unless transiting)" appear on the not-to-use list[12] | Leave it out |
| United States | Advises against buying tickets before the visa[13] | Not required |
Muscat is kinder on flights than some Gulf capitals. Italy's own checklist puts "booking" in brackets next to "ticket", and BLS asks for a photocopy of the booking. Where the German VFS list for your purpose asks for something stronger, follow it; we could not open a current German leaflet for Oman in October 2026.
Booked your Muscat appointment?
OMR 3.5 per passenger. Expect the PDF by email roughly 10 minutes later.
Germany from Muscat: what the embassy page adds
The German Embassy's Oman page is brief but has three useful points. Processing can take up to 15 working days from the moment your file reaches the embassy, so plan for that rather than calendar days.[2] You can apply as early as six months before you travel. And the page applies to people "residing permanently in Oman"; Omani students who live abroad for their studies must apply where they live, not in Muscat.[2]
The same mission also takes applications from people resident in Yemen.[2] We could not open a current German document list for Oman in October 2026, so download the one VFS gives you when you book and follow its flight line exactly.
Your residence card and the employer letter
For non-Omani applicants, the residence card matters as much as the passport. Italy's 2026 list wants three months of residence left after your planned departure, and the permit must sit in your current passport.[5] Renewed your passport recently? Get the residence transferred before you apply.
The same Italian list asks for an original no-objection letter from your employer. It must state your employment status, salary, position, start date and purpose of travel, plus an assurance that you will return to Oman and continue in the job, signed by a named person with contact details.[5] BLS, for its part, wants a letter from the sponsor and a copy of your valid labour card from non-Omani applicants, with six months of bank statements and a salary certificate.[7]
Give your HR team a few working days to produce these letters. We would request them before ordering anything else.
Timing rules that differ by centre
Muscat's centres do not agree on lead times, and that changes when you should order the flight reservation.
| Centre | Latest you should apply | Earliest |
|---|---|---|
| BLS (Spain group) | At least 30 days before travel[6] | Six months ahead[10] |
| Italy | At least 15 days before departure[4] | No more than six months ahead[4] |
| Germany | At least 15 days; processing up to 15 working days[2] | Six months before travel[2] |
| All Schengen states | 15 days; standard decision 15 days, up to 45[10] | Six months |
Bear in mind that our holds run for two weeks or less, and the carrier settles the exact length. So the trick is to order it close to the appointment, not close to the trip. For a BLS file that might mean the reservation is ordered five or six weeks before you fly, which is fine: what matters is that it is live when the file is examined.
Applying with children in Muscat
Families need to plan attendance as well as paperwork. Under Italy's list, children attend VFS together with both parents, and the application form needs the signature of both parents or the guardian. If one parent is abroad, the embassy asks you to contact its visa section by email.[5]
BLS wants a parental authorisation signed by both parents, with copies of both parents' passports attached.[7] On the flight side, every child on the application must appear on the reservation, under the name in their own passport. One PNR for the whole family is tidiest.
Held reservation or paid fare for a Muscat file?
| Your situation | Held reservation | Paid, refundable fare |
|---|---|---|
| Italy, tourist | Matches "ticket (or booking)" | Not needed |
| Spain group at BLS | A booking photocopy is what is asked for | Optional |
| Netherlands | Matches; no paid ticket needed | Not needed |
| UK visitor | Leave out | Buy after the decision |
| A centre tells you "ticket only" | May not satisfy it | Use this instead |
| Actually flying | Cannot be used | Required |
Flying from MCT: carriers and routes
Muscat International is the country's main gateway; Oman Airports also runs Salalah, Suhar and Duqm.[1] Oman Air's website features flights to London, Paris, Amsterdam and Rome, along with Frankfurt, Milan and Zurich.[14] For a Dutch or Italian application, a direct Oman Air routing is the most natural thing to hold. Our Oman Air guide shows how its manage-booking lookup works.
Schedules change, so check that the specific flight is on sale for your dates on the airline's own site before you order. If the airline will not sell the seat, we cannot hold it.

Living in Seeb, Bawshar, Muttrah or Amerat?
Everyone in the Muscat governorate uses the same handful of centres, so the advice above holds for Al Mawaleh, Ghala and Old Muttrah alike. The difference is mostly traffic. Al-Khuwair and Al Wattaya are central; from Seeb or Amerat, allow extra time for the morning rush and parking at Panorama Mall. Arriving late puts the slot at risk, and rebooking could push your trip back.
Residents further out, in Sohar, Nizwa or Sur, travel into the capital in the same way. Our Oman country page deals with them.
UK and US applications from Muscat
These two work differently from Schengen. For the UK, applications in Oman go through a centre in Muscat run under contract by VFS.[9] GOV.UK's supporting-documents guide is unusually blunt that flight bookings, other than for transit, should not be used as evidence.[12] Spend that energy on payslips, your Oman residence and proof of why you will come back.
American guidance, meanwhile, is to keep your money until the visa is granted.[13] The DS-160 records the dates you intend to travel; it does not ask for a booking. A reservation is optional and, if you carry one, should be described as exactly that.
Example: a Qurum couple bound for Malta
A Filipino couple working in Qurum plan a week in Valletta in March. Malta is not on the German or Italian lists here; BLS in Al Wattaya takes Maltese files.[7] BLS wants at least 30 days, so they book a slot on 10 February for travel on 14 March.[6]
They order a two-name reservation on 7 or 8 February: Muscat to Malta with one connection, and back. BLS asks for a full-page photocopy of the booking, so they print it single-sided. Each brings the sponsor letter, labour card copy and six months of statements. If the hold lapses while the file is with the embassy and they are asked, a new reservation costs OMR 3.5 per person.
Example: a Ruwi shop manager going to Italy
Now an Indian shop manager in Ruwi, residence valid to June 2027, heading to Rome for eight days in December. His passport was renewed in May. Italy's checklist says the residence permit must be on the current passport, so step one is confirming that the transfer to the new passport has been done.[5]
With that settled, his employer issues the no-objection letter with every field Italy lists. We hold MCT to Rome return on Oman Air three days before his VFS slot, name exactly as in the new passport. The hotel booking and insurance carry identical dates.

What not to do in Muscat
- Going to VFS for a Finnish visa. In Oman, Finland's tourist files sit with BLS.
- Using an old passport's residence page. Italy wants it on the current passport.
- Leaving BLS to the last fortnight. Spain's group asks for 30 days.
- Ordering the reservation when you book the slot. Order it in the final days before.
- Treating the reservation as a ticket. You need to buy one to fly.
Muscat FAQ
Where do I apply for a Finnish Schengen visa in Muscat?
According to the BLS International tourist checklist for Oman, Finland is one of five states, with Spain, Lithuania, Malta and Slovenia, handled at the BLS centre in the Al Tamimah Building, Al Wattaya. Check the BLS site when you book, since representation arrangements can change.
Does the Italian Embassy in Muscat accept a flight booking?
Its 2026 tourist checklist for non-Omani residents lists a "return ticket (or booking)" or proof of your own transport. A held reservation with a live PNR fits that wording. The embassy may still ask for more, and it alone decides the application.
How long must my Oman residence be valid for Italy?
At least three months after your intended departure date, and it must be in your current passport, according to the Italian Embassy's checklist. If your passport was recently renewed, transfer the residence first, then apply. Spain's BLS list likewise expects the Omani residence to be issued on your current passport, so the same step helps there.
What does a reservation cost in Oman?
Each passenger costs OMR 3.5, single or return alike. Multi-city plans cost that per pair of legs; hotels have their own per-stay, per-guest price. Razorpay processes the payment, by card or, for Indian bank customers, UPI and netbanking. We have no shop in Oman, so everything happens online.
Should a UK application from Oman include flights?
Not as a rule. GOV.UK's supporting-documents guidance advises against using flight bookings as evidence unless you are only transiting. Spend the effort on proof of income, your residence and ties to Oman instead, and buy the real ticket once the decision is in.
Can I fly with the reservation?
No. It is a held booking created for visa paperwork, and nothing has been paid to the airline, so you cannot check in. Buy a ticket after the visa is issued, for the dates the visa allows. You may choose the same flights or different ones.
When should I order if BLS wants 30 days' notice?
Order it a few days before your BLS appointment, not before your flight. Holds expire within a fortnight, at a time the airline chooses, so a late order means the PNR is still active while BLS and the embassy look at your file.
