Bangkok has the biggest cluster of embassies and visa centres in mainland South-East Asia, and the people using them are a mixed crowd: Thai families heading to Europe for the first time, Indian engineers on Non-B visas, Myanmar and Filipino professionals, retirees from everywhere. This page is for anyone who lives in Bangkok and needs a visa for another country. It covers which centres take your file, how their lists word the flight item, what foreign residents must add, and how to choose between the city's two airports. If you are flying into Thailand instead, our Thailand visa guide is the better read.

What does the common Schengen list for Thailand say?
It asks for a reservation, not a purchase. In 2017 the European Commission adopted a harmonised list of supporting documents for short-stay visas in several countries, Thailand among them. Annex V, the Thai list, names "proof of a round-trip airplane reservation" under tourism, next to accommodation, an itinerary if several countries are visited, and bank statements covering the last three months.[3]
Why this matters: every Schengen consulate in Bangkok starts from that same baseline. Individual embassies can add to it, and their own checklists often do, but the flight item is common ground. The Italian embassy publishes the list on its visa pages, which is where we read it.[3]
How each Bangkok desk words the flight item
| Country | Where Bangkok residents apply | Wording on flights | Our suggestion |
|---|---|---|---|
| Denmark | VFS Bangkok[5] | "Round trip ticket. Flight/train/ferry reservation with fixed travel dates", followed by "(Do not buy the ticket until a visa has been granted)"[6] | Held reservation with fixed dates |
| Germany | VFS Global in Thailand[8] | "Confirmed reservation of the round-trip flight ticket" plus "Please do not buy the ticket before the visa is issued" (list dated July 2019)[8] | Held reservation; check for a newer list |
| Netherlands | VFS Bangkok[4] | Booking in your name for the journey there and back; paid ticket not needed[10] | Held reservation |
| Italy | VFS Bangkok, Phuket or Chiang Mai[7] | Common EU list: round-trip airplane reservation[3] | Held reservation |
| UK | VFS centres in Thailand[9] | Flight bookings, unless you are transiting, are among documents GOV.UK calls not useful[12] | Usually leave out |
| USA | Embassy Bangkok or consulate Chiang Mai[11] | Advises waiting for the visa before buying any ticket[13] | Not needed |
A note on the German wording. "Confirmed reservation" sounds stricter than it is, because the very next line tells you not to buy. We read it as a booking that exists in the airline system under your name, which is what a held reservation is. The list is old, though, so if VFS gives you a newer version that asks for a paid ticket, a held seat may not be enough.

Expats in Bangkok: work permit, extension and re-entry permit
If you are not Thai, the first question is whether you may apply in Thailand at all. The Dutch page, for example, takes applications in Bangkok from people who live in Thailand and sends everyone else to the country where they live.[4] The US embassy says nonimmigrant applicants should interview in their country of residence or nationality.[11]
The second question is whether you can come back. The German list asks a foreign national residing in Thailand for the work permit, if applicable, and a "Re-entry stamp from Thai Immigration, valid after coming back from the Schengen states".[8] The Royal Thai Embassy explains why the stamp exists: if you leave before your permitted stay ends and want to keep it, you apply for a re-entry permit, which can be done at the airport before departure. Without one, the remaining permission is lost.[14]
Put those together and the rule for your reservation is simple. The return date must fall inside your current extension of stay, and you should have the re-entry permit before you fly. If your Non-B extension runs out on 30 November, a reservation returning on 3 December raises a question the officer should not have to ask.
Commuting in from Pattaya, Chonburi or the north
Plenty of people who list Bangkok on their forms actually live an hour or more away. For some countries that no longer means a trip into the capital. VFS runs a UK premium centre at the Dusit Thani Pattaya on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 10 am to 3 pm, and another in Chiang Mai on Mondays.[9] Premium centres cost extra, and VFS states plainly that choosing one has no bearing on the decision.[9] Italy also takes applications in Chiang Mai.[7]
For the Dutch and Danish desks, Bangkok is the only Thai centre named on their pages.[4][5] If you are coming in from Si Racha for the day, take an early slot and carry the printed reservation, so there is nothing left to print near the centre.
Suvarnabhumi or Don Mueang: which should the booking show?
Whichever you would really fly from. Both are international airports run by Airports of Thailand.[1][2] In our experience most full-service flights to Europe leave from Suvarnabhumi, while Don Mueang is where many budget and regional carriers sit. What matters to an officer is consistency: if the cover letter mentions Don Mueang and the reservation shows Suvarnabhumi, it looks careless.
A few routes to give you an idea of what reads naturally. Thai Airways sells Bangkok to Copenhagen and Bangkok to London on its own website,[15][16] which suits Danish and UK files. Singapore Airlines says it runs multiple daily nonstop services from Bangkok to Singapore, taking roughly 2 hours 20 to 2 hours 35 minutes,[17] a common first leg towards Australia or Europe. Gulf and other Asian carriers add plenty of one-stop options.

Buddhist-era years and Thai name spelling
Two small things trip up Bangkok files. Thai bank letters and employer certificates often print the year in the Buddhist era, so 2026 appears as 2569. Visa forms and airline bookings use the Western year. Check that the day and month agree across both, and do not leave the officer to do the conversion.
Romanised Thai names also vary from one document to the next. Copy your name onto the booking exactly as it appears on the passport data page, not as it appears on a staff card or a bank book.
Example: a Sathorn accountant visiting Copenhagen
Say an accountant living in Sathorn plans ten days in Denmark in late November, staying with a cousin. She books a VFS slot in Bangkok, then reads the 2026 tourist checklist, which wants a reservation with fixed travel dates and warns against buying before the visa.[6]
Five days before the appointment she orders a reservation: Bangkok to Copenhagen out, and back ten days later. She opens it on the airline's site with the PNR and her surname to check the spelling. Her cousin's invitation, the insurance certificate and her leave letter all show the same dates, written in the Western calendar. The embassy says it aims to decide within 15 days,[5] and once the visa arrives she buys a real ticket for those dates.
A second example: an Indian engineer on a Non-B visa going to Germany
Picture an Indian engineer working in Bang Na on a Non-B extension that runs to the end of next March. He wants two weeks in Germany at Christmas. Following the German list, he gathers his work permit and arranges a re-entry permit, so his stay in Thailand survives the trip.[8]
His reservation leaves Suvarnabhumi on 20 December and returns on 3 January, comfortably inside his extension. Because he lives in Thailand, he applies in Bangkok rather than flying home to India to do it. If he plans to stop in Mumbai to see family on the way back, the reservation should show that stopover, so his file matches the trip he will actually make.
Relatives coming to see you in Bangkok
Bangkok residents often host parents or friends from abroad. Since 15 September 2026, Thailand's visa exemption allows 30 days for tourism only, and visitors must show onward travel out of the country within those 30 days; every foreign arrival also completes the Thailand Digital Arrival Card within the three days before landing.[18] A reservation is not a paid ticket, so a visitor relying on the exemption should carry a real onward booking. Our onward ticket guide for Thailand covers this in detail.

When should a Bangkok applicant order?
In the week of the appointment. Expect up to 2 weeks of validity at most, with the precise period set by the airline; some holds end sooner. Since the Danish embassy works to a 15-day target,[5] a booking made a month before your slot may have lapsed while the file is still open. If the desk later wants fresher travel details, a replacement booking is quick to order.
What we would avoid
- A return date beyond your extension of stay, or travelling without a re-entry permit.
- Mixing BKK and DMK across the reservation, cover letter and insurance.
- Buddhist-era dates on one document and Western dates on another without a clear match.
- Adding a flight booking to a UK visit file when you are not transiting.
- Edited or generated PDFs. A booking the carrier's own site cannot show has no place in your folder.
Bangkok FAQ
Do Schengen consulates in Bangkok want a paid ticket?
The EU's common list for Thailand asks for proof of a round-trip airplane reservation, the Danish checklist says not to buy before the visa is granted, and the Dutch list confirms you need not pay for a ticket. A held booking matches that. If a newer list from your centre asks for a paid ticket, follow it.
I am a foreigner living in Bangkok. Can I apply here?
Usually, if Thailand is where you live. The Dutch page accepts applications in Bangkok from residents of Thailand, and the US embassy asks applicants to interview where they reside or hold nationality. Bring your work permit and arrange a re-entry permit so your Thai permission to stay survives the trip.
Where do I get a Thai re-entry permit?
The Royal Thai Embassy says you can apply for one at the airport before you leave, which keeps the rest of your permitted stay. Without it, that permission ends when you depart. Sort it out before your flight, because the German list expects to see it.
Should my reservation leave from Suvarnabhumi or Don Mueang?
From the airport you would actually use. In our experience, full-service flights to Europe mostly use Suvarnabhumi, and Don Mueang suits many budget routes. Keep the same airport on every document in the file so that nothing looks inconsistent.
Can I pay in baht?
We charge $9 per traveller and take cards through Razorpay; your card issuer converts the amount from baht. We cannot take cash or bank transfers at a counter, since we have no office in Bangkok. The reservation arrives by email in about 10 minutes.
Can relatives visiting me use this reservation to enter Thailand?
It is not a good idea. Thailand's exemption requires onward travel within 30 days, which a held, unpaid booking does not prove. Airlines and immigration may want to see a confirmed onward booking. Visitors should buy a real, ideally refundable, onward ticket.
How long does a Bangkok reservation last?
No more than two weeks, and often less, because the airline decides. Order it a few days before your appointment, then open it on the airline's pages the night before you submit. Should the consulate need more time and request a current booking, simply order another.

A reminder: a flight reservation is supporting evidence, nothing more. Call it a reservation, keep its dates consistent, and leave the decision to the consulate.
