People ask us this a lot, usually because they already know they will fly IndiGo, Air Arabia, flydubai or Ryanair once the visa comes through. It is a fair question. If the real trip will be on a budget carrier, shouldn't the reservation in the visa file be on one too? The short answer is no, it doesn't have to be. Below we explain why, how low-cost airlines handle holds and booking lookups differently from full-service ones, and how to keep your file consistent without paying for a seat you may never use. Every rule we quote links to the official page, listed at the end.
Low-cost carriers and visa reservations: key facts
| Question | What the official pages say |
|---|---|
| Do visa checklists name a type of airline? | None we checked does. Germany's India tourism list just says "Flight reservation" and adds that booking a real ticket brings no faster handling.[5] |
| Is a paid ticket needed for a Schengen visa? | Usually not. Dutch guidance states plainly that a paid ticket isn't required.[6] The Visa Code's Annex II accepts a reservation too.[8] |
| Can I hold an IndiGo fare? | Yes, for a fee. IndiGo's 6E Fare Hold blocks a fare for 48 or 72 hours on bookings made at least 7 days before departure.[1] |
| What does US law say about holds? | Carriers covered by 14 CFR 259.5 must hold a reservation at the quoted fare without payment, or allow penalty-free cancellation, for at least 24 hours if booked one week or more before departure.[2] |
| How do I look up a Ryanair booking? | With the six-character reservation number; Ryanair's help centre points you to the confirmation email for it.[3] |
| How do I look up an Emirates booking? | With the booking reference and last name on "Manage your booking".[4] |
Does the consulate care if you plan to fly a budget airline?
No checklist we have read asks which kind of airline you will use. What officers look at is whether your trip makes sense. Do the dates match your hotel, insurance and leave letter? Does the route enter and leave where your plan says it will? Is the name spelt as in the passport? An Air Arabia seat and a Lufthansa seat answer those questions equally well.
Several official sources go further and discourage buying before the decision. Germany's missions in India want a "Flight reservation" for tourism and note that holding a paid ticket won't put your file ahead of anyone else's.[5] The Netherlands tells tourism applicants they do not need a paid ticket.[6] GOV.UK puts flight bookings among the documents it calls less useful for a visit application, unless you are transiting.[7] The US State Department, for its part, warns against purchasing tickets before your visa is in hand.[12]
So the airline brand on your reservation is your choice. It only needs to be a real flight on your real dates. If you later buy a cheaper ticket on a budget carrier for the same days, that is normal. Plans firm up after a visa is issued, and nobody expects the paid ticket to be a carbon copy of the reservation.
Our view: keep the dates identical across every document. Swapping the airline later is harmless. Swapping the dates later, after the consulate has approved a specific trip, is what raises questions.
What makes a low-cost carrier different for a visa file?
Budget airlines are built around selling a seat, taking payment at once and charging separately for extras. That model affects three things that matter when you only want a reservation.
Payment comes first. On most budget websites the booking is created when the card payment succeeds. There is often no step where a seat sits unpaid in your name. IndiGo is an exception worth knowing about, covered in the next section.
Point-to-point selling. Many low-cost airlines sell single flights rather than through journeys. If you combine two of their flights yourself, they may be two separate bookings with two references. A consulate then sees two documents that only make sense together.
Different lookup rules. Some budget airlines retrieve bookings with the reservation number plus an email address rather than a surname. That is fine for the passenger, who has the email. It is awkward for anyone else trying to confirm that the booking exists.
None of this makes budget carriers a bad choice for your actual journey. It simply means a budget airline is often not the most practical place for a reservation that a third party may want to look up.
Can you hold a seat on a budget airline without paying?
Sometimes, and usually for a fee. Here is what official pages showed when we checked in October 2026.
IndiGo. IndiGo publishes an add-on called 6E Fare Hold. It blocks the fare for 48 or 72 hours for an upfront fee, listed at ₹99 for domestic and ₹199 for international flights. It applies to bookings made on goindigo.in at least 7 days before departure, and full payment is due within the hold period.[1] That is useful if you want to lock a price while you decide. It is a short window, though. Most visa decisions take longer than three days, so a hold made today will normally lapse well before the consulate rules.
US-regulated carriers. Under US rules, a covered airline must either keep your booking at the quoted price unpaid for a day, or refund it in full if you cancel within that first day, provided you book seven or more days ahead.[2] Most airlines meet this with free cancellation within 24 hours rather than an unpaid hold. Again, a single day rarely covers a visa process.
Ryanair and other European low-cost airlines. We could not find a published hold or reserve-without-paying option on Ryanair's official help pages. Treat their bookings as paid from the start.
The point to take away: a budget airline hold, where it exists, is measured in hours or a few days. A visa application runs for weeks. That mismatch is why people end up either buying a ticket too early or looking for a reservation designed for the visa file.
How booking lookups differ on budget and full-service sites
If an officer, a visa centre or you yourself want to confirm a booking, the airline's retrieve page is where that happens. The fields it asks for decide who can check.
- Ryanair: your booking reference, also called the reservation number, is a six-character code of letters and numbers. Ryanair says you can find it in the confirmation email, your myRyanair account, the app or the boarding pass, and that you may need it to manage your booking or check in.[3]
- Emirates: the "Manage your booking" tool asks for your booking reference and last name.[4] Anyone holding those two details can see that the booking exists.
A surname-based lookup is what most full-service airlines use. It is also what our reservations are designed around: you get an airline and a PNR, and anyone holding the reference and surname can pull it up on that airline's site. Step-by-step screenshots are in our pre-submission PNR check.
Say your appointment is at VFS on a Tuesday. On the Monday evening, open the airline's site, type the PNR and your surname, and check the name, flight numbers and dates. Five minutes, and you go in knowing the document matches.

Budget airline vs full-service airline for the visa file
| Point | Typical low-cost carrier | Typical full-service carrier | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|---|
| Unpaid hold | Rare; IndiGo sells a paid 48/72-hour hold[1] | Varies by airline and market | Neither lasts as long as a visa process |
| Lookup fields | Often reference plus email | Usually reference plus surname[4] | Surname lookups are easier for a third party to check |
| Connections | Often sold as single flights | Usually one booking for the whole journey | One reference reads more cleanly in a file |
| Changing dates later | Fees plus fare difference are common | Depends on fare rules | Buy the real ticket after the visa, either way |
| Fits a consulate checklist? | Yes, if dates and names match | Yes, if dates and names match | The checklist wording decides, not the brand[5][6] |
Budget airlines and onward-ticket checks at check-in
This is where budget travellers actually get caught, and it has nothing to do with the visa. On a one-way trip into a country that wants proof of onward travel, the airline checks your documents at the desk. Airlines use IATA's Timatic database for entry rules, and IATA says proper document checks help carriers avoid immigration fines.[9] A budget desk agent applies the same rules as anyone else.
Some destinations set a higher bar than a reservation:
- New Zealand: visitors without a visa need a ticket out at the end of their stay, and INZ's page insists the exit ticket is fully paid before departure.[10] A held reservation does not meet that wording.
- Thailand: the visa exemption for eligible nationalities is 30 days from 15 September 2026, with onward travel expected within that period.[11]
Our advice is plain. If the country's own page says the onward ticket must be paid, buy a paid onward ticket. A cheap budget fare for the exit leg is often the sensible answer there. Where the rule is less strict, a verifiable reservation is commonly used. Our pages on onward tickets and check-in versus immigration checks go into this country by country.
What about trips built from separate budget flights?
Lots of real trips are stitched together: a budget flight to Dubai, then another budget flight onward. That works for flying if you leave enough time between them. For a visa file it creates two problems.
First, the paperwork. Two unrelated bookings with different references, sometimes on different days, make the officer do the joining up. Second, protection. If the first flight is late on a self-transfer, the second airline is generally under no duty to rebook you, because you bought two separate contracts. Check each airline's conditions of carriage before you rely on a tight connection.
For the application, a single reservation showing the whole journey is easier to read. Example: you plan Kochi to Dubai on one budget airline, three nights there, then Dubai to Tbilisi on another. Show a reservation for the full routing on the visa file. After the visa arrives, buy the two budget tickets for those same dates. The plan the consulate saw and the trip you take stay the same; only the booking method changes.
Avoid this: paying for two non-refundable budget fares before your visa decision just to have "real" bookings in the file. If the visa is refused or delayed, both fares are usually lost, and the consulate gains nothing from them.
How to plan the file when you will fly a budget airline
- Fix your dates first. Match them to leave from work, hotel nights and insurance cover.
- Check the low-cost schedule. Make sure the budget airline actually flies on those days, so the real trip later is possible.
- Get a verifiable reservation for the same route and dates, with each traveller's name spelt as the passport shows it. See name format rules.
- Verify it yourself on the airline's website the evening before you go to the visa centre.
- Describe it honestly. Use the words "flight reservation" or "itinerary" on the form and in your letter, never "ticket".
- Buy the real budget ticket after the visa, on the dates the visa allows.
- For one-way trips to strict countries, buy a paid onward ticket if the official page requires it.
Timing matters more than airline. Your reservation holds for up to 2 weeks, though the airline sets the precise length, so order it near the appointment. Two or three days ahead is our usual suggestion. More detail on how long a reservation stays valid.
What a verifiable reservation costs, and how to get one
Our reservations carry a working PNR under your name for whatever route and dates you supply, and they open on the airline's "Manage booking" page. You can't board with one, because it is a held booking rather than a purchased fare. If you have a preferred airline, add it in the notes box on the booking form.
Each price covers one traveller for a single or return journey, while multi-city routes are billed leg-pair by leg-pair. Payment goes through Razorpay (UPI, card or netbanking) and the PDF usually follows within about 10 minutes. See the full price list, learn how visa flight reservations work, or start from our home page. Need a stay as well? We also do hotel bookings for visa files, priced per stay and per traveller.
Flying budget after the visa?
Show the same dates now with a reservation the consulate can look up.
Already ordered? You can follow progress on the order tracking page. For what each country's checklist asks, browse requirements by country; Schengen applicants should also read our Schengen guide.
Honesty note: no reservation can promise a visa or boarding. The consulate decides the visa and the airline decides at check-in.
Low-cost airline reservations: frequently asked questions
Can my visa reservation be on IndiGo or Air Arabia?
It can be on any airline that genuinely flies your route on your dates. Consulates check the dates, route and passenger names, not whether the carrier is low-cost. In practice a reservation that can be retrieved with a surname is easier for a third party to confirm, which is why many applicants use a full-service carrier for the file and buy the budget ticket later.
Will the officer object if my reservation airline differs from the one I fly?
No official checklist we have read says so. Visas are granted for a period, not for a flight, and travellers often buy a different fare after approval. What matters is that you travel within the visa's dates. Keep the dates in your file honest and consistent, and buy the actual ticket once the decision is made.
Does IndiGo let me hold a fare for my visa application?
IndiGo sells 6E Fare Hold, which blocks a fare for 48 or 72 hours for a fee of ₹99 domestic or ₹199 international, on bookings made at least 7 days before departure. Full payment is due within the hold period. That is handy for locking a price, but it usually expires long before a visa decision arrives.
Why can't I just buy the cheapest budget ticket now?
You can, but you risk losing it. Budget fares are often non-refundable, and the State Department recommends waiting for the visa before you purchase. Germany's missions say a booked ticket does not speed processing. If your plans or dates change after the decision, a cheap fare can turn expensive through change fees.
Is a budget airline reservation enough as proof of onward travel?
It depends on the country, not the airline. INZ wants that exit ticket bought outright before you set off, so a held booking falls short there. Other countries are less specific. Check the official entry page for your destination, and if it asks for a paid ticket, buy one; a low-cost exit fare is often the cheapest way.
How do I check a Ryanair booking?
Ryanair calls its six-character code the booking reference or reservation number. Its help centre lists the confirmation email, myRyanair account, the app and the boarding pass as places to find it, and says you need it to manage your booking or check in. Look in your own confirmation details for the exact fields the retrieve page asks for.
How long will my reservation stay valid?
Up to 2 weeks; the exact span is the airline's call. So get it shortly before the visa centre visit, not a month out. If your appointment moves, get a fresh reservation for the new date instead of relying on an old one.
