Dummy Ticket for Uganda Visa (2026): Itinerary, EATV and Entry Rules

Uganda runs its visas through one online portal, and the form makes you upload every supporting paper before an officer looks at anything. That makes the flight document more visible than in many countries: it sits in your file as a JPG next to your passport page and photo. This guide explains what Uganda's own missions list for each visa type, where a flight reservation is the right document, where the wording points to a bought ticket, and what the airline and the officer at Entebbe are likely to look for. Each rule links to the official page we read; the full list is at the end.

Uganda visa key facts for 2026

Do Indian passport holders need a visa for Uganda?

Yes. An ordinary Indian passport does not get visa-free entry, so you apply online before you fly. GOV.UK describes the same process for British travellers: apply on the immigration portal and receive an approval letter with a barcode, which you show on arrival.^[3] Many other nationalities follow the same route, so most of this guide applies whatever passport you hold.

A small number of neighbours, mainly East African Community citizens, travel under regional arrangements. If you hold one of those passports, check the portal's own guidance for your nationality before assuming you need the full application. We could not find a single official exemption list on the portal in October 2026, so we won't reproduce one from secondary sites.

What documents does the Uganda e-visa ask for?

The Uganda mission in Copenhagen publishes the clearest breakdown we found, by visa type. Here is the wording, quoted from that page:^[1]

• Single entry / tourist visa (USD 50): passport bio-data page "with at least 6 months validity", "Tour plan", "Travel itinerary/booking", a recent passport-size photograph, and "Hotel booking or reservation (if any other accommodation, provide an address)".
• East African Tourist Visa (USD 100): passport copy, photo, "Vaccination Certificate (Yellow fever)", "Return Ticket" and "Travel Itinerary". The mission adds: "The issuing country should be your first entry point".
• Transit visa (USD 50, 7 days): passport copy, photo, "A letter stating reason for transit and country of destination" and "Proof of permission to enter the country of destination".
• Multiple entry (USD 100 for 6–12 months, USD 200 for 24 months): police clearance, a recommendation from referees in Uganda, a cover letter and copies of previous Uganda visas. No flight document is listed.

Notice how different the single-entry and EATV lists are. One says "itinerary/booking". The other says "Return Ticket". That difference is the whole answer to the question this page is about.

Does Uganda want a flight reservation or a paid ticket?

For the ordinary single-entry visa, a reservation is a fair match for the wording. "Travel itinerary/booking" describes a planned route, held in your name, that an officer can look up. A genuine reservation with a live PNR does exactly that, and it saves you paying for a fare before you know the decision.

The EATV is different. "Return Ticket" reads like a purchased ticket, and we would not tell you otherwise. A held reservation may not satisfy that request. If you choose the EATV, either buy a refundable return fare or write to the mission handling your application and ask what they accept.

How do you apply on the Uganda immigration portal?

The mission page sets out nine steps. In short, and in order:^[1]

1. Open the Immigration Portal and choose "start new application".
2. Accept the disclaimer, then pick the visa type, category and sub-category.
3. Fill in the form. Keep arrival and departure dates identical to your flight reservation.
4. Upload the documents in JPG format. The portal generates an application ID; save it.
5. Pay where prepayment applies, then wait for the decision.
6. On approval, an approval letter is emailed. Some categories need a top-up payment first.
7. On arrival, report for biometric capture with your uploaded documents, receipts, the approval letter and your passport.

The JPG rule catches people out. Our reservations arrive as a PDF, so export each page as an image before you upload. Check the image is sharp enough to read the PNR, names and dates at normal zoom. A blurry upload is one of the few avoidable reasons for a query.

Step seven also matters for packing. The officer at the airport may ask to see the same documents you uploaded, so carry printouts. For the flight paper, that means your purchased ticket by the time you travel, plus a copy of what you submitted if the dates changed.

East Africa Tourist Visa: when is a reservation not enough?

The EATV lets you move between Uganda, Kenya and Rwanda on one visa for 90 days. It costs USD 100, it is for tourism, and the mission notes it is not renewable once it expires or once you leave the block.^[1] You apply to the country you will enter first.

Its checklist is stricter about flights: "Return Ticket". Say you plan Entebbe in, a road trip to Kigali, then home from Nairobi. That is a natural EATV trip, and the officer wants to see that you leave the region at the end. A held reservation from Nairobi back to Mumbai describes the plan, but it is not the ticket the list names. Our honest view is to treat the EATV as a "buy refundable" case.

Two practical points before you choose it. Kenya now runs an eTA for most visitors, and Rwanda gives many nationalities a visa on arrival, so the EATV is not always the cheapest option. Price the separate routes too. Our Kenya eTA guide and Rwanda visa guide cover those rules.

What happens at check-in and at Entebbe?

Two checks happen before you meet the Ugandan officer. First, the airline checks your documents at the departure desk. Carriers use IATA's Timatic database, which IATA describes as real-time information on passport, visa and health document rules.^[8] For Uganda, that means the approval letter and the yellow fever certificate are likely to be checked before you board.

Second, the approval is not the end of the process: the mission's steps end with biometric capture at the immigration office or border, where you present the documents you uploaded.^[1] We did not find an official page listing the exact questions officers ask at Entebbe. Our practical advice is to carry the approval letter, the yellow fever card, your hotel details and your real return or onward ticket in one folder.

Note the timing. A reservation is right for the application stage. On travel day, carry a ticket you have actually paid for, because you cannot board on a reservation and the officer may ask how you will leave.

Yellow fever: the certificate going in and coming back

Uganda requires a yellow fever vaccination certificate from every arriving traveller aged one year or older, according to the CDC's country page.^[4] GOV.UK says the same and suggests carrying the physical certificate.^[3] The EATV checklist lists it as an upload too.^[1]

Indian travellers have a second reason to keep it safe. India's Ministry of Health lists Uganda among yellow fever endemic countries.^[5] The CDC summary of India's rule says travellers aged nine months or more arriving within six days of leaving a risk area need the certificate, and those without one can be isolated for up to six days.^[6] Book the jab at an authorised vaccination centre early, and ask there when the certificate becomes usable.

Which routes and transit stops need checking?

Uganda's international gateway is Entebbe, and most trips from India connect once. Common patterns are through an East African hub such as Addis Ababa or Nairobi, or through a Gulf hub. Ethiopian Airlines, for one, advertises Entebbe via Addis Ababa on its own site.^[9] Check current schedules on the airline's site rather than relying on old route lists.

Transit rules sit on top of the Uganda visa. Kenya's eTA exempts passengers who transfer at a Kenyan airport and do not leave it, according to the Kenyan Embassy in Washington.^[7] If your connection means changing airports, collecting bags or staying overnight outside the airport, you need that country's entry permission instead. Your reservation should show the whole journey: India to Entebbe including the connection, and Entebbe back to India or on to your next country. Leaving out the return leg makes the itinerary look like a one-way move, which is the opposite of what a visitor file should show.

What should your Uganda flight reservation show?

• Your name exactly as in the passport. The portal matches your upload to your bio-data page. See our name format guide.
• Arrival at Entebbe on the date in your form, and a departure inside the visa's validity.
• A PNR that opens under "Manage booking" on the carrier's website.
• Dates that agree with the hotel booking and tour plan, because the single-entry list asks for both.
• Every traveller who is applying, including children.

The "Tour plan" item is worth a sentence of its own. If you are on a gorilla-trekking or safari package, the tour operator's day-by-day plan should start the day after your arrival flight and end before your departure flight. Mismatches of a day or two are the kind of thing an officer notices.

When should you book the reservation?

Book it shortly before you submit, ideally within a day or two. Its life is up to two weeks, with each airline setting the precise hold, so booking a month early gains nothing. Say you plan to upload on 10 November for a 2 December arrival: we would book the reservation on 8 or 9 November, not in October.

The portal does not publish a processing time on the mission page we read, so leave yourself a few weeks before travel. If the approval arrives and your reservation has lapsed, that is normal. Getting an Entebbe itinerary: cost and delivery
