Turkish Airlines turns up in visa files for an obvious reason: its Istanbul hub gives one-stop connections from India and the Gulf to a long list of European cities. For a Schengen trip that starts in Rome and ends in Amsterdam, or a holiday in Türkiye itself, a Turkish Airlines itinerary is often the cleanest way to show your plan. Unusually, Turkish Airlines also publishes its own rules for holding a fare before you pay. Those rules are worth knowing, because they show how the airline itself thinks about a reservation versus a ticket. This guide walks through them, then covers names, lookups and the visa rules that decide whether a reservation is enough.

How does Turkish Airlines' Hold the Price work?
It is a paid option on turkishairlines.com. After choosing your flights, you pick Hold the Price from the additional services and select how long to hold. Later you complete the purchase from "My Reservations". If you buy within the period, the holding fee comes back to you.[2]
The terms add details that matter for a visa applicant:[3]
- Ticket prices can change between reservation and ticketing without notice.
- You cannot change, extend or cancel the reservation through the website or app.
- If you let the period run out, the fee is not refunded.
- Seats and extra baggage can only be bought after ticketing.
- If several PNRs exist for the same flight or passengers, the system keeps one and cancels the rest, with no refund for the cancelled ones.
That last point is a practical warning. Don't stack several holds on the same flight for the same people "just in case". Turkish Airlines says duplicates get cancelled.
Is Hold the Price a good tool for a visa file? Sometimes. It is the airline's own reservation, which some applicants find reassuring. But you pay a fee you'll lose if you don't buy, and the period you can choose may not stretch to your appointment. Does the 24-hour free refund help with a visa?
Rarely. The airline's no-charge refund applies only to website or app purchases, only for 24 hours after buying, and only when the first flight is 168 hours or more away.[4] The exclusions are strict: not for tickets already changed, not after a name change, and not for tickets issued through Hold the Price.
The catch is timing again. You pay the full fare, and the free window closes a day later. Unless your appointment is tomorrow, you'll be holding a paid ticket outside that window when the consulate sees it.
How should you enter names for Turkish Airlines?
Turkish Airlines publishes clear name-entry rules, and they are worth following even on a reservation, because the surname is how the booking is found.[5]

The single-name rule catches many Indian passport holders. If your passport has a given name only, tell us when you book so the reservation follows the airline's format, and keep the visa form consistent with your passport.

Which visa routes does Turkish Airlines commonly serve?
Schengen trips via Istanbul. The Istanbul hub makes multi-country Europe trips easy to draw: in on one city, out of another. Under EU rules you apply to the country of your main destination, at least 15 days and no more than six months before you travel, and a decision usually takes 15 days.[8] German missions in India list a "Flight reservation" on their tourism checklist.[9] For routing across several countries, see reservations for multiple Schengen countries.
Visits to Türkiye. Indian passport holders need a visa. According to the Turkish foreign ministry, an Indian applicant who already holds a valid visa or residence permit from a Schengen state, the US, the UK or Ireland may be able to obtain a single-entry e-Visa for one month, "provided that they meet certain conditions".[6] The e-Visa site shows the extra conditions after you pick your nationality and dates.[7] Read them on the official site, not on a third-party page. How can you check a Turkish Airlines reservation?
- Open turkishairlines.com and go to Manage booking (you'll also see "Check-in / Ticket management" on the homepage).[1][3]
- Type the reservation code (PNR) from your document.
- Type the surname in the format the airline uses, following the rules above.
- Compare names, flight numbers, dates and the Istanbul connection time with your visa form.
- If a leg is operated by a partner, such as IndiGo, check that leg on the partner's site as well.

How far ahead should you book?
Close to the appointment. Here's a worked example. Your Italy appointment in Mumbai is on 20 November, and you fly Mumbai–Istanbul–Rome on 15 December, returning from Milan on 29 December. Order the reservation on 18 or 19 November, check it that day, and make sure the hotels cover 15 to 29 December. Ordering in October would only give the hold more time to lapse.
Which mistakes come up with Turkish Airlines itineraries?
- A very tight Istanbul connection that would never be sold as a real trip. Pick a sensible layover.
- Entering Schengen in one country, applying to another with no explanation of the main destination.
- Multiple holds for the same people on the airline's site. Turkish Airlines cancels duplicates.[3]
- Hyphens and accents left in names, so the lookup fails.
- Calling the reservation a paid ticket on the application or cover letter.
How should you describe a Turkish Airlines itinerary in your application?
As what it is: a reservation, routed through Istanbul, on the dates you intend to travel. On the Schengen form, the intended arrival date is the day you land in the Schengen area, not the day you leave India. With an overnight connection that can be a day later than your departure, so read the arrival date off the reservation rather than guessing.
In the cover letter, mention the connection if it's long. "I will fly Mumbai to Istanbul on 15 December and connect to Rome the same afternoon" reads well and answers a question before it's asked. If you plan to stop over in Istanbul for a few days, say that too, and remember that a stay in Türkiye needs its own entry permission.
Booking for a family or group?
Put everyone who applies together on one reservation. Consulates often process family files side by side, and a single PNR with every name makes the link obvious. Apply the Turkish Airlines name rules to each person: children with single names, spouses with hyphenated surnames and anyone with accents in their name are the usual trouble spots. The price stays per passenger, so a family of four on a round trip pays four times the single fee.
If some of the group apply in a different city or on a different date, tell us. It may make sense to issue separate reservations so that each one is current on its own appointment day.
After the decision: what next?
With the visa in hand, buy the real ticket, on Turkish Airlines or anyone else, within the dates the visa allows. Is Hold the Price the same as a dummy ticket?
They are close cousins. Both fix a booking without a paid ticket. Hold the Price is the airline's own paid option, created by you on turkishairlines.com; it can't be changed or extended online and the fee is lost if you don't buy. Our reservation is made for you, for a flat per-passenger price.
How do I find my booking on turkishairlines.com?
Use the reservation code (PNR) and the passenger's surname. Type the surname the way Turkish Airlines formats names: no hyphens, no accents, and for single-name passports the name goes in the surname field. A surname typed another way is the most common reason a valid booking doesn't appear.
Can I get the 24-hour free refund on a held fare?
No. Turkish Airlines says the free refund within 24 hours does not apply to tickets issued with the Hold the Price option. It covers tickets bought on the website or app, refunded within 24 hours of purchase, with the first flight at least 7 days away, and not changed in the meantime.
Do I need a flight reservation for a Türkiye e-Visa?
The foreign ministry says the one-month e-Visa for eligible Indian passport holders depends on meeting certain conditions, and the e-Visa website lists them once you choose your nationality and travel dates. Check there before you apply. For the sticker visa, follow the checklist from the visa centre that handles your application.
My name has a hyphen. How will it appear?
Turkish Airlines asks for a hyphen to be replaced with a space. So THOMPSON-JONES becomes THOMPSON JONES. Tell us the exact passport spelling and we'll follow the airline's rule. On your visa form, still write the name exactly as it appears in the passport.
Can a Turkish Airlines reservation show a multi-country Schengen trip?
Yes. A multi-city reservation can bring you into one Schengen city and out of another, with Istanbul as the connection. Make sure the consulate you apply to matches your main destination, and that hotels and insurance cover the same dates. Multi-city routes are priced per pair of legs.
What happens if I make two holds for the same flight?
On turkishairlines.com, the system keeps one PNR and cancels the others when several exist for the same flight or passengers, and there is no refund for the cancelled ones. Keep one reservation per trip. If a reservation from us needs changing, ask us rather than ordering a second one.
