Chandigarh punches far above its size for visa applications. Families from Mohali, Panchkula, Zirakpur, Ropar and half of Himachal come here to give biometrics for Canada, Europe and elsewhere. The city is convenient, but it is worth being clear about one thing early: Chandigarh hosts application centres, not embassies. The officers who decide your file, and any interview, are in New Delhi or further away. This guide sets out which centres the Tricity has, what each destination writes about flights, the airports you will realistically fly from, and the quickest way to order a reservation from your sofa in Sector 35 or Kharar. We sell online only, with no shop in Sector 17 or anywhere else.

Which visa steps still mean a trip to Delhi?
Anything that needs a consular officer face to face. The US mission's map puts Chandigarh, Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh in the New Delhi consular district, so a US visitor visa interview for a Tricity resident happens at the embassy on Shanti Path.[1] Germany draws the same line for long-stay visas: its New Delhi embassy covers Chandigarh, Punjab, Haryana and Himachal.[9]
Neither of those needs a flight booking at the interview stage. America's advice runs the other way round: visa first, airfare afterwards.[2] German student and work categories have their own checklists, and flights rarely feature at filing. If you are heading to Delhi for an interview, save the ₹699 unless a list in front of you asks for an itinerary.
What can you submit in Chandigarh itself?
Quite a lot, through private centres that pass your file on. Here is the picture from official pages, with what each destination says about flights.

Some category lists use stronger words such as "confirmed" or "paid". Treat those words at face value: our held booking might fall short of them, and a fare you can cancel for a refund protects you better.
Should a Canada visitor file from the Tricity include a flight plan?
It is one of the few cases where we would say yes. IRCC's visitor visa page suggests copies of flight details, a hotel booking or an event registration as evidence of what you intend to do.[7] It does not ask you to buy anything, and with processing times that can run long, a paid non-refundable fare is a real risk.
A typical case is a parent or relative visiting family in Brampton, Surrey or Winnipeg. For those, the itinerary simply has to agree with the invitation letter: arrival date, length of stay and a return that brings the visitor home in time for whatever ties them to India, such as a pension, land or a job. VFS in Chandigarh or Jalandhar then takes biometrics; the decision is made by IRCC, not the centre.[8]
Study permits and work permits are different animals. Their checklists focus on admission letters, funds and job offers, and we rarely see a flight requirement at the filing stage. Read your own list before ordering.

Do UK applications from Chandigarh need a flight booking?
Generally not. GOV.UK's guide to supporting documents puts flight bookings, unless transiting, among the things you should not send.[5] The application pages go further and advise against booking travel before a decision, adding that UKVI will not cover costs if it is refused or late.[6]
Where you give biometrics is your choice within VFS's network. GOV.UK's finder links India to VFS Global, and VFS announced in May 2026 that its twelve UK premium centres in India include Amritsar and Ludhiana, both in Punjab.[3][4] Premium centres cost extra and do not change the outcome, as VFS itself states. Compare that fee with the drive to a standard centre before picking.
What do Schengen countries want from Chandigarh applicants?
Most of them want a reservation, not a purchase. The German checklist used across India lists "Flight reservation" as item 11 for tourist visas.[11] Dutch guidance is even clearer: the Netherlands wants your name on a reservation for the trip into and back out of Schengen, and states outright that no purchased ticket is required.[12]
German short-stay files are not tied to a city either; whichever Indian VFS office takes them, the Mumbai consulate makes the call.[10] That is handy if the slots in one city fill up. Timing is set at EU level: apply no earlier than six months and normally at least 15 days before travel, and expect a decision in about 15 days, which can stretch to 45.[15]

Coming in from Himachal, Haryana or rural Punjab?
Chandigarh is the natural hub for Shimla, Solan, Ambala, Yamunanagar and Patiala, but the jurisdiction rules follow your state, not the centre you drive to. The US and German maps both place Himachal Pradesh, Haryana and Punjab with New Delhi.[1][9] For Schengen short stays that rarely matters, since the Dutch list and the German rule let you use any of the Indian centres named.[10][12]
A practical tip for hill-state families: your reservation should still start from the airport you will fly out of, usually Delhi, even if you will reach it by Volvo bus or car. Mention the road leg in your cover letter in one line if you like. Nobody expects a bus ticket in the file.
Which airport should the reservation start from?
The one you will really use. For most long-haul trips from the Tricity, that means Delhi. Air India Express sells Chandigarh to Abu Dhabi on its own site, with Dubai, Doha, Bangkok and others on the same page; whether a given service is nonstop depends on the season, so check the schedule.[16] For Toronto, London or Frankfurt, people typically take a road trip or a domestic hop to Delhi and fly from there.
So which looks better on paper: IXC to Delhi to Toronto, or simply Delhi to Toronto? Either works if it matches your form. If your application says you depart from Delhi, start the reservation there. Example: Mohali parents visiting a son in Brampton
Suppose Gurpreet and Harjit, a retired couple in Mohali's Phase 7, want ten weeks with their son in Brampton next summer. They apply online for visitor visas and attach their son's invitation letter, his Canadian status papers and their pension and bank records. IRCC suggests showing travel plans, so they add a reservation.[7]
We would put both names on one PNR, spelt as in their passports, from Delhi to Toronto and back, with dates that match the invitation. They order a couple of days before giving biometrics at VFS Chandigarh, not weeks ahead. If IRCC takes longer and the summer dates slip, they simply order a fresh reservation for new dates. The real tickets come only after the visas are granted.
Example: a Panchkula couple heading to Barcelona
Take Neha and Rohit from Panchkula's Sector 20, planning eight days in Barcelona and Madrid in April. They book a slot at BLS in Sector 34A and download Spain's tourist checklist for their profile.[13] If the list accepts a reservation, a Delhi to Barcelona outbound with a Madrid to Delhi return reads naturally, because it matches the hotels in both cities.
They apply in late February, comfortably inside the EU's window.[15] The reservation, insurance, hotel confirmations and leave letters all show the same dates. If the checklist wording turns out to require a confirmed ticket, they follow it and buy a refundable fare instead. That is what we would tell anyone.

How do Tricity applicants order one?
- Read your checklist line on flights. Reservation, itinerary, or confirmed ticket? The wording decides what you need.
- Choose the departure city you will really use, usually Delhi for long-haul, on our booking page.
- Type every name from the passport's data page, including children and elderly parents.
- Pay ₹699 per passenger through Razorpay: UPI on your phone, an Indian card, or your bank's netbanking.
- Expect our email roughly 10 minutes later; the promotions or spam folder is the usual hiding place.
- Confirm the booking yourself by entering the reference and last name on the airline's site, as shown in our verification walkthrough.

When should you book it?
In the same week as your appointment. Each hold survives up to 2 weeks; how long exactly is the airline's call, and it is not uniform. A classic slip is ordering on the day a VFS slot three weeks away is confirmed, then finding the hold gone by appointment day. Wait. Should the mission sit on your file and later want an up-to-date plan, a replacement reservation at that stage costs another ₹699 and takes ten minutes.
What should you avoid?
- Paying an agent for a "confirmed" ticket that is really an edited PDF. A reference no carrier recognises can wreck an otherwise strong application.
- Starting the itinerary from IXC when your form says Delhi. Small inconsistencies prompt questions.
- Booking long before the appointment. The hold will lapse.
- Treating VFS or BLS as the decision maker. They collect documents; the embassy decides.
- Calling a reservation a ticket on forms or in cover letters.
Chandigarh FAQ
Is there a US consulate in Chandigarh?
No. The US mission in India places Chandigarh, Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh in the New Delhi consular district, so interviews take place at the embassy in Chanakyapuri. Nobody there will ask you for an itinerary, and official US advice is to buy flights only once approved.
Can I give Canada biometrics in Chandigarh?
VFS Global lists Canada visa application centres in both Chandigarh and Jalandhar, so Tricity and Doaba applicants rarely need to travel to Delhi for biometrics. Appointments are required. The centre only collects biometrics and documents; IRCC makes the decision. A reservation can support the travel-plan part of a visitor file.
Which Schengen countries take applications in Chandigarh?
Official sources we checked confirm three: the Netherlands through VFS in Chandigarh and Jalandhar, Spain through BLS in the same two cities, and Germany, whose short-stay files can go in at any Indian VFS office before Mumbai decides. Other countries may also be available; check each embassy's page for India.
Does a Punjab-based UK visitor file need flights?
Usually not. Britain's visitor guidance places flight bookings, transit cases aside, on its list of documents to leave out, and separately warns against booking travel until the decision arrives. Focus your effort on finances, employment and ties instead.
Can I pay ₹699 by UPI from Chandigarh?
Yes. Our checkout runs through Razorpay, which takes UPI apps such as GPay, PhonePe and Paytm, Indian debit and credit cards, and netbanking. The fee is ₹699 for each person, whether one way or return. A multi-city route is charged at ₹699 per pair of legs. We have no counter, so we cannot take cash.
Should my reservation start from Chandigarh or Delhi?
Start it wherever your application says you will depart. For Canada, the UK and most of Europe, that is usually Delhi. If you want the IXC to Delhi leg shown too, we can add it as part of a multi-city booking, priced per pair of legs.
Can I fly with this reservation?
No. The airline is holding a seat, not selling you one, so there is nothing for check-in staff to accept. Once approved, purchase the real fare on whichever route and dates now suit you.
How long does the reservation last?
Up to 2 weeks, depending on the airline. Ordering it a few days before your VFS or BLS appointment keeps it live while the file is checked. If your dates move, order a new one rather than editing the PDF.
