Auckland is home to a large share of New Zealand's migrants. Nurses from Manila, software engineers from Pune, chefs from Lahore and accountants from Dhaka all end up here, and sooner or later most of them want a holiday in Europe, a work trip to the States or a week in Tokyo. Their passports usually need a visa for those trips even though a Kiwi passport would not. This page is written for them: which office in New Zealand takes each application, what the official checklists actually say about flights, and how a flight reservation from us fits in. We are an online service only; there is no DummyTicketPrice desk in Auckland or anywhere else.

Which office handles an Auckland resident's visa?
That turns on your destination. New Zealand has a quirk: plenty of European embassies are in Wellington, yet the visa centres they use are up in Auckland.
United States. Per the embassy's visa page, you interview in the country where you live or whose passport you carry, and New Zealand bookings are for the U.S. Consulate in Auckland.[1] If you hold a resident or work visa here, that is your post.
Netherlands and other VFS countries. Netherlands Worldwide is explicit: to apply for a Schengen visa in New Zealand, go to the VFS Global centre in Auckland. The same centre takes residents of the Cook Islands, Fiji, Samoa and other Pacific territories.[3] Croatia's foreign ministry announced its own Schengen visa centre in Auckland in January 2024.[7] Other Schengen states use different set-ups, so check the main destination's page.
Germany. The German Embassy in Wellington says visa applications must be lodged there, that its honorary consuls do not handle visas, and that you submit in person unless you qualify for a postal application.[5] For an Aucklander that means a domestic flight or a long drive south.
Japan. Residents of Northland, Auckland, Waikato, Bay of Plenty and the Ruapehu District apply at the Consulate-General of Japan in Auckland, according to the consulate's visa pages.[8]
United Kingdom. UK visitor visas are applied for online and you then give biometrics at a commercial centre. GOV.UK's guidance applies wherever you live, and it is the part that matters for flights (see below).[10]
What do the checklists used in New Zealand say about flights?
The short version: some want a reservation, one asks for something firmer, and two would rather you did not buy anything yet.
| Destination | Where an Auckland resident applies | Official wording on travel | What we would do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Netherlands | VFS Global, Auckland[3] | A booking in your name covering both directions; the Dutch list tells applicants in Auckland: "You do not need a paid travel ticket", full stop[4] | Held reservation |
| Germany | German Embassy, Wellington[5] | Header note: "A confirmed return ticket must be presented"; checklist line: "Flight reservation, rail tickets, others"[5][6] | Ask the embassy, or buy a refundable fare |
| United States | U.S. Consulate, Auckland[1] | Washington says hold off on tickets until approval[2] | Nothing needed |
| United Kingdom | Online, then biometrics | Puts "flight bookings (unless transiting)" on its do-not-send list[10] | Leave it out |
| Japan | Consulate-General, Auckland[8] | Asks for a day-by-day itinerary with dates and accommodation[8] | Reservation helps fix the dates |
On the Dutch route, our held booking is precisely the document the list has in mind. For the US and UK, spending money on flight paperwork rarely helps. Japan sits in between: the consulate wants dated plans, and a reservation is a tidy way to anchor the first and last day of the itinerary.

Germany from Wellington: reservation or confirmed ticket?
This is the one Auckland applicants ask us about most, and the honest answer is that the embassy's own page pulls in two directions. At the top of its tourist and visitor visa pages, the embassy states that a confirmed return ticket must be presented. Lower down, the document list names "Flight reservation, rail tickets, others".[5][6]
We read "confirmed" as the stricter instruction, and we would not tell you to ignore it. A held reservation is a real booking on the airline's system, but no fare has been paid, so it might not count as a confirmed ticket in the embassy's eyes. You have three sensible options:
- Email the visa section before your appointment and ask whether a reservation is acceptable for your case.
- Buy a fully refundable fare if you want certainty, and keep the refund rules on file.
- Use a reservation only if the embassy confirms it, and call it a reservation on every form.
Since you are flying to Wellington for the appointment anyway, it is worth getting this settled in writing first. A wasted trip costs more than our fee.
Why your New Zealand visa matters to a Schengen consulate
For a migrant living in Auckland, the most common problem is not the flight at all. It is the expiry date on your New Zealand visa.
Dutch officials want evidence that you live lawfully in New Zealand, through a permit still valid 3 months beyond your exit from Schengen.[4] The German Embassy asks for your passport including a re-entry visa to New Zealand, again valid for at least 3 months after your scheduled return.[5]
Say your work visa ends on 31 January and you want to be in Europe from 20 December to 10 January. Ten January plus three months is 10 April, so your visa falls short and the file may not even be accepted. Renew first, or move the trip. Your flight dates and your New Zealand visa dates have to work together, which is another reason to fix the reservation only once the rest is settled.
If you are on a short-term status, such as a visitor visa while job-hunting, the Dutch page notes that non-residents must show why they cannot apply in their country of residence.[4] In that situation, applying from home may be simpler.
Which routes from Auckland look natural on a reservation?
Pick the routing you would really fly. Air New Zealand's own route pages offer fares from Auckland to Singapore, Los Angeles, Tokyo Narita, Vancouver, Shanghai and Seoul Incheon.[12] From those gateways, connections run on to Europe and the rest of Asia.
- Europe: a one-stop routing via Singapore or another Asian or Gulf hub is the everyday choice. The return leg should land back in Auckland before your NZ visa runs short.
- United States: Auckland to Los Angeles is a common starting point, though for a US visa you rarely need any flight paperwork.
- Japan: Auckland to Tokyo Narita fits neatly with a dated itinerary for the consulate.

What if your family is flying in to see you?
This is a different question, and the answer is stricter. Parents or siblings who come to New Zealand on a visa waiver must show they intend to leave. Immigration New Zealand says visitors will need to provide their ticket for travel out of the country at the end of the stay, and airlines may ask to see it at check-in.[11]
That is an onward-ticket rule at the border, not a consulate checklist, and a held reservation may not satisfy it. If your relatives are visa-free visitors, have them travel on a real return ticket. Where they must get a visitor visa beforehand, a reservation can support that application instead. Both situations are covered in our New Zealand visa guide and our onward ticket guide for New Zealand.
Example: an Indian nurse in Mt Roskill planning Amsterdam
Imagine Priya, an Indian passport holder working at a hospital in Auckland on a work visa that runs until next August. She wants ten days in the Netherlands and Belgium in late April, with the Netherlands as her main stay. Her appointment at VFS Auckland is on 3 April.
She checks the Dutch tourism checklist first. Her work visa runs well past three months after her return, so the residence condition is met.[4] The checklist says a reservation will do, with no paid ticket needed. We would have her order on 1 April: Auckland to Amsterdam on 22 April, back from Brussels on 2 May, her name exactly as printed in her passport. The hotel bookings, the leave letter from the hospital and the insurance dates all match. After the visa arrives, she buys whatever real fare suits her, on the same dates or new ones.
How do you order from Auckland?
- Read your checklist and confirm a reservation is what it asks for.
- Open our booking page and enter the route, dates and every traveller's passport name.
- Pay $9 per traveller by Visa, Mastercard or another international card through Razorpay.
- Watch your inbox for the PDF, usually around 10 minutes later.
- Test the PNR by opening the airline's Manage booking page, typing your surname and the reference, and confirming the flights appear. Our verification guide shows how.

When should you book it?
Late, not early: two or three days ahead of the appointment suits most Auckland applicants. Held seats last for up to 2 weeks and the exact expiry is the carrier's call, so something booked a month ahead has probably expired before an officer opens your file. If your VFS slot or your Wellington appointment moves, buy a replacement hold dated to the new appointment instead of trusting the first.
What to take to VFS or the embassy
For the travel part of the file, keep it simple. Print the reservation on plain A4, one copy per applicant, and make sure the passenger names match the passports letter for letter. Put the airline name and booking reference in your cover letter so the officer can find it quickly. Take your New Zealand visa label or eVisa printout too, because the residence condition is checked alongside the itinerary.
On the evening before your slot, pull up the booking on the carrier's website once more. Better to spot a retimed flight from your sofa in Auckland than across the counter from a VFS officer.
Mistakes we see from New Zealand applicants
- A NZ visa that expires too soon after the trip, which no flight booking can fix.
- Assuming Germany works through VFS Auckland. Its page says Wellington, in person.
- Treating a reservation as a confirmed ticket where the wording asks for confirmed or paid travel.
- Booking a family on separate files with different dates, so the itineraries do not line up.
- Edited or invented PDFs. A booking reference the airline's own site cannot find damages your credibility badly.
Auckland FAQ
Do you have an office in Auckland?
No. DummyTicketPrice works only online, so there is no counter in Auckland, Wellington or Christchurch. Ordering happens on our site; Razorpay takes the $9 per person card payment, and a PDF of the reservation lands in your inbox roughly 10 minutes afterwards. You can then print it yourself before your appointment.
Can I use a reservation for a Dutch Schengen visa lodged in Auckland?
The Dutch tourism list asks for a booking in your own name covering the journey into Schengen and back out, and says plainly that a paid fare is unnecessary. That matches what we provide. Separately, check that your New Zealand visa outlasts your Schengen exit by three months or more, since that rule stands on its own.
Will the German Embassy in Wellington accept a reservation?
We cannot promise that. Its visa pages say a confirmed return ticket must be presented, while the document list mentions a flight reservation. Ask the embassy before your appointment. If it insists on a confirmed ticket, buy a refundable fare instead of using a held booking.
Should I take a flight booking to my US visa interview in Auckland?
No. Washington's visitor visa guidance warns against purchasing flights before approval, and the DS-160 simply records your planned dates. A few Auckland applicants bring a reservation anyway to show the trip has fixed limits. That is optional, and it should be described as a reservation if anyone asks.
Can I pay in New Zealand dollars?
Our price outside India and the Gulf is $9 in US dollars per passenger. Razorpay charges your Visa or Mastercard, and your New Zealand bank shows the converted NZD figure, sometimes adding an overseas transaction fee of its own. There is no cash option, as we have no physical office.
Can my parents use your reservation to fly into Auckland?
Not to board. Nobody has paid for the seat it holds, so it is useless for actually flying. If your parents enter visa-free, Immigration New Zealand expects them to show a ticket out of the country, and a held booking may not meet that. For a visitor visa application, a reservation can support the file.
How long will the reservation stay live?
As long as two weeks, though the carrier, not DummyTicketPrice, sets the real limit, and some fares drop sooner. So order it only a few days before you visit VFS or the embassy. If your appointment is rescheduled, order a new reservation timed to the new date.
Ready for your Auckland appointment?
$9 per traveller, a live PNR, delivered by email in about 10 minutes.
Please note: what we supply is a held booking, not a purchased fare, and it has no say in the visa decision. Label it honestly, keep it in step with the other documents, and let the mission's checklist overrule this page wherever they disagree.
