If you live in Asansol, Durgapur, Raniganj or anywhere in Paschim Bardhaman, your visa appointment is almost certainly in Kolkata. We could not find a consulate or visa application centre for any major destination in the district on the official pages we checked, so the honest plan is a trip of roughly 213 km down NH19. Kolkata, though, is well served: the US, Germany, France, Italy and Japan all have consulates there, and Canada, the Netherlands, Italy and Spain list centres in the city. This page sets out who handles what, quotes the flight lines on their checklists, covers the local airport and Kolkata's international one, and explains how to order a reservation online for ₹699.
Asansol applicants: quick reference
| Item | Official position (checked October 2026) |
|---|---|
| Local airport | Kazi Nazrul Islam Airport, inside Paschim Bardhaman district[1] |
| Nearest international airport | Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport, Kolkata (CCU)[2] |
| Road distance to Kolkata | 213 km, about 4 hours 35 minutes via NH19 and AH1, per the district website[1] |
| US visas | US Consulate General Kolkata (district includes West Bengal)[3] |
| Germany, France, Japan | Consulates General in Kolkata, each covering West Bengal[4][7][10] |
| Italy | Consulate General Kolkata; VFS centre in Kasba, Kolkata[8] |
| Canada, Netherlands, Spain | VFS Canada and VFS Netherlands in Kolkata; BLS Spain on Sarat Bose Road[11][12][14] |
| Our fee | ₹699 each; pay with UPI, a card or netbanking |
Why do Asansol residents apply in Kolkata?
Because that is where the offices are. West Bengal sits inside the Kolkata district of the US, German, French, Italian and Japanese missions.[3][4][7][8][10] Spain is the odd one: its partner places West Bengal under the Embassy of Spain in New Delhi, yet runs a submission centre in Kolkata.[13][14]
The UK is the one we could not pin down. We tried VFS's UK locations page in October 2026 without success, and the May 2026 premium-centre release names nowhere in West Bengal.[15] Check the VFS UK page for the standard centre nearest to you before you book.
For a German Schengen visa, distance matters less. The German missions say you can file at any VFS centre in India, and every short-stay file is decided in Mumbai.[5] In practice Kolkata is still the closest for most people in Asansol.
Moved to Asansol recently, or living here on a foreign passport?
Your current home address usually decides the office, whatever city printed your passport. Take Italy: its consulates in India want six months of lawful residence inside their area before accepting a file, apart from narrow exceptions for people merely staying there.[23] If you transferred to a plant in Durgapur from another state a few months ago, check that rule before you book a Kolkata slot. Carry proof of your West Bengal address, such as a rent agreement or utility bill, whichever country you apply to.
What do Kolkata's checklists say about flights?
| Country | Office for an Asansol resident | Flight wording, quoted | What fits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Italy | Kolkata consulate, VFS Kasba[8] | Prefers "fully paid and confirmed" tickets[9] | Think refundable fare; a hold may not do |
| Germany | Any Indian VFS; Mumbai decides[5] | "Flight reservation"; a booked ticket brings no priority[6] | Reservation |
| Netherlands | VFS Kolkata[12] | Reservation in your name, no paid fare required[16] | Reservation |
| UK | VFS; see above | "flight bookings (unless transiting)" are on the not-needed list[17] | Leave out |
| USA | Kolkata consulate[3] | Wait for the visa before buying tickets[18] | Optional |
| Canada | VFS Kolkata for biometrics[11] | "flight details" given as an example of travel plans[19] | Reservation helps |
Italy's Kolkata list is the one to watch. It recommends paid, confirmed tickets, and our reservation is neither. If you apply to Italy, we would point you to a refundable fare. For Germany, the Netherlands and Canada, a held reservation matches what the official text asks for.
Kolkata appointment booked?
Order your reservation from Asansol for ₹699 by UPI. It arrives by email in roughly 10 minutes.
Kazi Nazrul Islam or Kolkata: which airport goes on the reservation?
For an overseas trip, almost always Kolkata. The district website notes that Kazi Nazrul Islam Airport, at Andal, lies within Paschim Bardhaman.[1] We found no scheduled international flights from it in October 2026, so a journey abroad would mean a domestic connection first.
The AAI page for Kolkata names it Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport.[2] Airlines publish plenty from there: Emirates has a "flights from Kolkata" page for its Dubai network, and Thai Airways sells Kolkata to Bangkok.[20][21]
Should the reservation begin at Andal? Only if that is how you will truly travel, for example a domestic flight to Delhi or Mumbai and then onward. Most people from Asansol take the train or drive to Kolkata and fly from there, so a CCU start reads naturally. One welcome change: from 3 June 2026 Indian passport holders can change planes in Germany without an airport transit visa, so routing via Frankfurt or Munich is simpler.[4]

Planning the Kolkata visit from Paschim Bardhaman
Treat it as a two-day job, and budget for it. A night in Kolkata, train fares and meals are part of the real cost of applying from Paschim Bardhaman, so it pays to arrive with a complete file and avoid a second trip.
On timing, the district lists Asansol and Durgapur as its two main railway stations, and the road journey alone is over four hours.[1] With a 9am slot at Kasba or Rajdanga, arriving the night before is far less stressful than leaving at dawn.
Carry two printed copies of the reservation and everything else, plus the PDF on your phone. The night before you set off for Kolkata, retrieve the PNR online. Any schedule change can then be sorted at home.
Example: a Durgapur engineer at a trade fair in Germany
Say an engineer at a plant in Durgapur is sent to a trade fair in Hanover in April. His employer's letter and the fair's invitation are ready. He books VFS in Kolkata for 20 March, since any Indian VFS can take a German Schengen file and Mumbai makes the decision.[5]
Germany's business checklist asks for a personal covering letter and "Proof of intended means of transport and itinerary".[22] We would order a reservation on 17 or 18 March, Kolkata to Hanover with one connection, matching the fair dates in the invitation. His company buys the real fare once the visa is issued. Simple and consistent.
Example: Asansol parents and a US graduation
Now imagine parents from Asansol whose son is graduating in Ohio in May. West Bengal is in the US Kolkata district, so the interview is there.[3]
We would not sell them a reservation for this. The DS-160 notes planned dates only, and Washington's own advice is to keep your money until the visa arrives.[18] If they want something in hand to explain a two-week trip, a reservation is harmless, but it is not required and they should describe it truthfully. Better to put that ₹699 towards a changeable fare once approved.
Example: a Raniganj family visiting relatives in Canada
Picture a family of four from Raniganj invited to a cousin's wedding in Ontario in December. They apply online, and the biometric step happens at VFS Canada in Kolkata, which lists its centre on Rajdanga Main Road in Kasba.[11]
Canada's visitor guidance names flight details as one way to show the length and purpose of a visit.[19] We would upload a reservation that runs Kolkata to Toronto with one connection, all four names on a single PNR, with the return after the wedding. Order it a few days before the online submission, not after the biometrics. The invitation, the cousin's status document and the family's bank records should all point at the same dates.
Spain, France and Japan for West Bengal residents
Spain's arrangement surprises people. Its partner lists West Bengal under the Embassy of Spain in New Delhi, not a Kolkata consulate, but the actual submission can happen at BLS on Sarat Bose Road in Kolkata.[13][14] So you travel to Kolkata, and the file is decided elsewhere.
France and Japan both run consulates in Kolkata whose districts include West Bengal.[7][10] France's document list is generated through the France-Visas website for your profile, which we could not load in October 2026, so we cannot quote its flight wording here. Use the list it produces for you.
Does an Asansol applicant always need a reservation?
No. Think of it destination by destination. Germany, the Netherlands and Canada describe something a reservation answers well.[6][16][19] Italy's Kolkata list prefers paid tickets. The UK does not want flight bookings for an ordinary visit, and the US advises against buying tickets before the visa.[17][18] If your list does not mention flights, leave them out; an extra document is not automatically a stronger file.
Packing for a Kolkata appointment
- Two printed copies of the reservation, every name clearly visible.
- The airline and PNR written on your covering letter.
- The same travel dates on the hotel booking, insurance, invitation and leave letter.
- Appointment letter and ID originals, plus a small folder so nothing gets crumpled on the journey.
Business travel from the Asansol-Durgapur belt
If you are travelling for work, to a trade fair, a factory acceptance test or a training course, the employer's letter does most of the work. Germany's business list, for instance, asks for a company covering letter with the purpose, duration and a brief itinerary, plus an invitation from the business partner abroad.[22]
Two practical points. First, the travel dates on the company letter, the invitation and the reservation must agree, so settle the dates before anything is printed. Second, if the trip may slip by a week, do not buy a non-refundable fare; a reservation now and a real ticket after the visa is the cheaper path. If your company's travel desk books refundable fares as a matter of course, use those instead and skip us entirely.
How to order from Asansol
- Find your office in the table above; Kolkata in nearly every case.
- Check the exact flight line in your visa category's list.
- Enter route, dates and travellers on our booking form, copying names from the passport.
- Pay ₹699 for every person by UPI, debit or credit card, or netbanking.
- Look out for the email about 10 minutes later.
- Check the reservation yourself on the airline's website. See how.
Follow an order on the tracking page; full rates sit on the price page.
How far ahead should you order?
Three days or so before you travel to Kolkata. Airlines keep these holds for up to 2 weeks, each setting its own exact period, sometimes less. Ordering a month early because the slot is a month away just risks it lapsing. If the consulate later asks for current travel plans, order a new one at that point.
What to watch out for
- Applying to Italy with only a held booking when the list recommends paid tickets.
- Underestimating the journey and missing a Kolkata slot.
- A booking from Andal when you will really fly from Kolkata.
- Altered or invented PDFs that no airline system can find.
Asansol FAQ
Is there a visa centre in Asansol or Durgapur?
We found none on the official consulate and partner pages we checked in October 2026. US, German, French, Italian and Japanese consulates for West Bengal are in Kolkata, as are the Canadian, Dutch and Italian VFS centres and Spain's BLS centre. Plan for a trip to Kolkata, ideally arriving the evening before your slot.
Which airport should my reservation start from?
Usually Kolkata's Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport. Kazi Nazrul Islam Airport at Andal is in the district, but we found no scheduled international flights from it. Start the booking wherever you will really begin the international journey.
Does a reservation meet Italy's checklist in Kolkata?
Perhaps not. Italy's 2026 tourist list from Kolkata advises applicants to show tickets that are paid and confirmed. Nothing is paid on our hold, so it could be judged insufficient. A refundable fare tracks that advice more closely, and acceptance is up to the consulate.
Where in Kolkata do I submit an Italian visa?
Italy's Kolkata consulate lists a VFS centre in Kasba, on the Eastern Metropolitan Bypass, which takes files Monday to Friday. Its district includes West Bengal, so Asansol and Durgapur residents belong there. Read the 2026 tourist checklist before you go, because it recommends paid and confirmed tickets rather than a held reservation.
Can I pay from Asansol by UPI?
Yes. Razorpay handles our payments, so any UPI app, Indian card or netbanking works. The cost is ₹699 for each traveller, whether one way or return, with the same again for each extra pair of legs on a multi-city plan. We do not have a shop or agent in Asansol, so no cash.
How long will the reservation stay valid?
Up to 2 weeks. The airline decides the exact length, and some hold seats for less. Order a few days before your Kolkata appointment, and replace it if the date moves.
Should I carry flights to my Kolkata US interview?
Not required. The DS-160 asks for planned dates, and US guidance is to buy flights after approval. If you take a reservation along, it is optional, and you must describe it honestly as unpaid.
Can I use the reservation to fly?
No. The seat is only on hold, unpaid, so check-in will refuse it. Buy your real fare after the visa comes through.
Order from Asansol now
₹699 per traveller, entirely online, checkable on the airline's website.
Be clear on forms: this is a flight reservation, not a paid ticket. Keep its dates consistent with your other documents. The consulate alone decides your visa.
