Al Khor sits on Qatar's north-east coast, and plenty of the families living there have a long drive ahead of them on appointment day. The town has no consulate, no visa centre and no airport of its own. So the practical questions are simple: which office in Doha takes your file, how long your Qatar ID (QID) must run, and what the checklist says about flights. This page answers those three things for residents, most of whom hold Indian, Pakistani, Filipino, Bangladeshi or Nigerian passports. We are an online service. There is no DummyTicketPrice desk in Al Khor or Doha; everything happens on our website and by email.

Where does an Al Khor resident hand in a visa application?
In Doha, for nearly every country you are likely to visit. Brussels sets the basic rule: the consulate covering your country of legal residence takes the file.[7] For a Qatar resident that means the Doha embassy of your main destination, or the visa centre it uses.
Two official examples show how this works in practice. The Netherlands sends Qatar applicants to the VFS Global centre in Doha and restricts that centre to people who are resident in Qatar.[3] Germany's embassy in Doha tells applicants it handles trips where Germany, Austria or Slovenia is the main destination, and points them to VFS for appointments.[5] That Austrian and Slovenian detail surprises people. If your holiday is mostly in Vienna, check that page before you hunt for an Austrian slot elsewhere.
Germany also says completed forms can go in six months ahead of travel.[5] Across the EU the window matches: six months ahead at the earliest, with a fortnight-plus margin (15 days) before you fly. Normal processing is 15 days, which can stretch to 45.[7] Plan the drive to Doha around those numbers, especially in May to August, when the German embassy says demand peaks.[5]
What do the lists used in Qatar say about flights?
They differ more than you might expect. Here is what we found on the official pages in October 2026.
| Destination | Where a Qatar resident applies | Flight item, in the official wording | What we would do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Netherlands | VFS Doha[3] | "A reservation in your name for your travel to and from the Schengen area"; "You do not need a paid travel ticket"[4] | Held reservation, round trip |
| Germany (also Austria, Slovenia) | German Embassy Doha via VFS[5] | The tourism list we read asks for confirmed hotel bookings and residence proof; we found no flight line on it[6] | Optional reservation to show dates |
| United Kingdom | UK visa application centre, Doha | "flight bookings (unless transiting)" sit under less useful evidence[10] | Usually leave out |
| United States | US Embassy Doha[8] | Washington tells applicants to wait for the visa before paying for flights[9] | Nothing needed for the interview |
A word on the German list. When we read it in October 2026, it carried no line about flights at all; the travel items were insurance and hotels.[6] Many applicants still add a reservation because the VIDEX form asks for travel dates and it helps the dates on every page agree. That is a judgement call, not a requirement.

Order online, pay QAR 33 per traveller, and receive the reservation PDF by email in roughly 10 minutes.
How long must your Qatar ID be valid?
For Schengen, think "trip plus three months". Germany's Doha list wants your Qatar residence to run on for a minimum of three months past your planned Schengen exit.[6] The Netherlands checklist uses the same three-month idea for a residence permit.[4]
Say your QID expires on 20 January and you want to be in Amsterdam from 10 to 24 December. Three months after 24 December is 24 March, so that QID falls short. Renew it first, then book the appointment. This one check saves more wasted trips down the Al Khor Coastal Road than anything else on this page.
The UK takes a slightly different angle. Its supporting-documents guide wants proof that you live lawfully in the country of application when you are a foreign national there, unless the passport itself already shows that right.[10] For most expats in Qatar that means a copy of the QID.
Do you need a flight booking for a US visa interview in Doha?
No. The US Embassy in Doha tells applicants to schedule interviews where they live or where they hold citizenship, and warns that fees cannot be refunded or moved.[8] It also says every nonimmigrant applicant must attend in person, whatever their age.[8] Nowhere does it ask for a flight booking. Washington's visitor-visa page goes further, warning against paying for travel while the application is still pending.[9]
Qatari citizens are in a different position. The embassy notes that they can now use ESTA for short tourism or business trips instead of a visa.[8] If you are an expat in Al Khor, though, the normal interview route still applies to you.
Which routes from Hamad International make sense on a reservation?
Hamad International is the departure point for almost every Al Khor resident, and Qatar Airways runs its network from there.[2] Because it is a major hub, a direct sector to your Schengen entry city is often available, which keeps a reservation simple: one sector out, one sector back. Where there is no direct flight on your dates, a single connection is perfectly normal.
A few habits help the itinerary read naturally:
- Match the entry point to your main destination. If Germany is the main destination, a Doha to Frankfurt or Munich sector backs that up. If the trip is mostly Dutch, land in Amsterdam.
- Keep the return to DOH. You live in Qatar, so the trip ends there. A one-way itinerary leaves an officer wondering where you go next.
- Book everyone on one PNR. A family of four should show four names on the same booking, spelt as in each passport.

Example: an engineer's family in Al Khor heading to the Netherlands
Picture an Indian engineer who lives in Al Khor with his wife and two children. They want ten days in the Netherlands over the Christmas school break, flying out of Doha on 18 December. Their QIDs run to next September, so the three-month rule is no problem.
They book a VFS slot in Doha for 25 November. For the Dutch file, a booking in all four names covering the journey in and out of Schengen is enough; the checklist spells out that nobody has to pay for a ticket yet.[4] We would order the reservation on 22 or 23 November: Doha to Amsterdam on 18 December, Amsterdam to Doha on 28 December, four passengers on one PNR. The hotel booking, travel insurance and the employer's leave letter all carry the same dates. Before setting off for Doha on appointment morning, one of them retrieves the booking under Manage booking, just to be sure it is still held.
Why not order it in October when they first start planning? Because the reservation might lapse before the officer looks at it. More on that below.
Inviting family to Al Khor: what Qatar asks of them
Sometimes the visa question runs the other way, with parents or siblings coming to stay with you. Visit Qatar's official visa tool sorts visitors by nationality and residence. GCC residents are pointed to an A2 entry visa on the Hayya portal; holders of a valid Schengen, UK, US, Australian, New Zealand or Canadian visa are pointed to A3; others to A1, which needs a hotel reservation during the application.[1]
The same tool shows visa-on-arrival options for some passports, tied to a Discover Qatar hotel booking and a QAR 100 fee, and for some results it adds the line "Confirmed round ticket is required."[1] Where you see that sentence, take it literally. A held reservation may not satisfy an airline or an officer asking for a confirmed round ticket, so buy a real fare for that trip. Visitors' passports also need at least three months of validity from arrival, according to the same page.[1]
How to order from Al Khor, step by step
- Find the right office in Doha for your main destination, using the embassy's own page.
- Check your QID dates against the trip plus three months.
- Find the travel item in the document list for your visa type and note its exact words.
- Enter the route and every passenger on our booking page, with each surname and given name exactly as the passport prints them.
- Pay QAR 33 per traveller by card through Razorpay. UPI or netbanking also go through if you bank in India.
- Open our email, normally about 10 minutes later, and confirm the PNR on the airline's "Manage booking" page. Our verification guide shows how.
Lost the email? Track your order with the details you used at checkout. Every currency we charge in is listed on our pricing page.
When should you order it?
Close to the appointment. Our holds last for up to 2 weeks at most; the carrier sets the precise length, which may be shorter. For a Doha VFS slot on a Thursday, we would order on the Monday or Tuesday of that week. If the embassy keeps your file longer than planned and asks for updated travel details, order a fresh one at that point rather than paying for a long hold in advance.
Notes for the main expat passports in Al Khor
The destination's rules do not change with your passport, but your home country's rules and your visa history can. We cover those in separate guides:
- Indian passport holders: see our guide for Gulf-based Indian expats.
- Pakistani passport holders: our Pakistani travellers guide.
- Filipino passport holders: our Filipino travellers guide.
- Bangladeshi passport holders: our Bangladeshi travellers guide.
- Nigerian passport holders: our Nigerian travellers guide.
One more point for US applicants of any nationality: the embassy page in Doha currently carries notices about entry restrictions for some nationalities under a presidential proclamation.[8] Read those before paying the visa fee.
Mistakes we see from Qatar residents
- A QID that expires too soon after the trip. Renew first.
- Applying at the wrong embassy because the first country on the route is not the main destination.
- A one-way booking that never returns to Doha.
- An edited or invented PDF. A booking nobody can retrieve from the carrier is worse than no booking at all.
- Calling the reservation a ticket on a form or in an interview. It is a reservation; say so.
Al Khor FAQ
Can I apply for a Schengen visa in Al Khor itself?
No. There is no visa centre in Al Khor, so residents travel to Doha. The Netherlands, for example, uses the VFS Global centre in Doha and accepts applications there only from people who live in Qatar. Germany's embassy also routes appointments through VFS in Doha. Allow time for the drive and arrive with every page printed.
Does the Dutch embassy want a paid flight ticket?
No. The Dutch tourism list wants something in your name that shows how you get into and out of Schengen, and it says outright that the fare need not be paid. A held booking with a live PNR fits. Pay for actual seats only after the visa sticker is issued.
How long should my QID be valid for a German visa?
At least three months beyond the day you intend to leave the Schengen area, according to the German Embassy Doha's tourism list. If your QID ends earlier, renew it before booking the appointment. The Dutch checklist uses the same three-month idea for residence permits.
Do I need a flight reservation for my US visa interview in Doha?
No. The embassy wants you in person and booked where you live or hold citizenship, yet it never mentions flights. Washington's guidance is to wait for the visa before committing money to travel. If you want to show your intended dates, the DS-160 already records them.
Can I pay QAR 33 with a Qatari card?
Yes, card payments go through Razorpay's checkout. Each passenger costs QAR 33, single or return alike, while a multi-city route is charged per two sectors. Anyone with an Indian bank account linked to UPI can use that or netbanking instead.
Can my parents use your reservation to get a Qatar visa?
It depends on what Qatar's tool shows for their passport. Some results on Visit Qatar's page state that a confirmed round ticket is required, and a held reservation may not meet that. Others centre on a hotel booking through Discover Qatar or the Hayya portal. Check their exact result first, and buy a real fare where a confirmed ticket is asked for.
Can I board a flight at Hamad International with this booking?
No. The seat is held under a real PNR, but nothing has been paid, so the airline will not check you in. It is for showing your plans to an embassy. After the visa is granted, buy a ticket for dates within the visa's validity.
How quickly does the reservation arrive?
In most cases within ten minutes or so; it comes as a PDF attachment. If it has not arrived, check spam and then use the order tracking page or message us on WhatsApp. Order within a few days of your appointment, since the airline sets how long the hold lasts, up to 2 weeks.
Your Al Khor reservation, ready today
QAR 33 per passenger, checkable on the airline's own site, no office visit needed.
Please note: a reservation is evidence of a travel plan, nothing more. It does not decide your visa. Describe it accurately, keep it consistent with your hotel and leave dates, and follow your embassy's list where it asks for something different.
