Korean Air Dummy Ticket: Find My Trip, Name Rules and the Korea Visa Catch

A Korean Air dummy ticket is a held reservation on KE flights, not a paid ticket, which you can find on koreanair.com with the booking reference, departure date and passenger name. It works where a checklist asks for a reservation. But the South Korea C-3-9 checklist used in India asks for a "confirmed, refundable flight ticket", so for that visa a hold may not be enough.

We want to start with the awkward part, because it saves people money. Most travellers searching for a Korean Air dummy ticket are applying for a South Korean visa, and the checklist many Indian applicants are given asks for something a held reservation is not: a confirmed, refundable ticket. So this guide does two jobs. It explains how Korean Air's own booking, lookup and refund rules work, using koreanair.com pages we read in October 2026. And it is straight with you about when a reservation on Korean Air helps (plenty of visas for other countries) and when you should buy a refundable fare instead.

Pay later on koreanair.com?No. Online bookings must be purchased "at the time of booking"; other bookings follow a separate ticketing deadline shown in My Trips.[1]

Can you use a Korean Air reservation for a South Korea visa?

Often, no. The C-3-9 short-term visit checklist published through VFS Global for applicants in India (effective 16 June 2025) lists, as item 9: "Provide a confirmed, refundable flight ticket (e-ticket)".[7] That is about as clear as checklist wording gets. A held reservation is not confirmed in that sense and is not refundable because nothing was paid. Submitting one where this list applies risks a return or a refusal.

What should you do instead? Buy a fare whose rules allow a refund, keep the fare rules with your papers, and only then submit. Korean Air shows fare rules under "Ticket Restrictions" in the e-ticket itinerary.[2] Read the cancellation charge before you pay, because "refundable" rarely means free.

Don't game the 24-hour rule. Korean Air waives refund penalties on paid Economy international tickets refunded within 24 hours of purchase.[2] That's a consumer protection, not a visa tool. Buying a ticket, printing it and cancelling it the same day would leave you submitting a ticket that no longer exists. Don't do it.

Two caveats. First, checklists differ by consular region and change over time; our South Korea visa guide tracks the current lists and centres. Second, if you are a national who can enter Korea without a visa, there's no visa checklist at all. You apply for K-ETA, which the Ministry of Justice describes as "NOT a visa" and only part of the visa-free entry requirements, valid for three years or until the passport expires.[8]

Where does a Korean Air reservation fit?

Korean Air flies from Seoul Incheon to a wide network, and its route map lists cities in South Asia such as Delhi and Kathmandu alongside Europe, North America and the rest of Asia.[5] That makes it a natural choice whenever your real trip connects through Seoul. A held KE reservation is useful for visas to other countries where the checklist asks for a reservation, an itinerary or flight details. Some examples:

TripWhat the visa asks about flightsDoes a KE reservation fit?
Delhi to Seoul, for a Korean visa from India"Confirmed, refundable flight ticket"[7]May not. Buy a refundable fare.
India to a Schengen country via SeoulMost checklists ask for a reservation or itinerary; see our Schengen guideYes, if Seoul is on your real route
India to Japan via Seoul"Itinerary with the flight/ship number and date of arrival and departure to and from Japan"[9]Yes, if you'd genuinely connect in Seoul
Visa wording summarised from our country guides, each of which cites the official checklist.

Pick the airline you'd really fly. If the cheapest sensible route to Frankfurt from your city doesn't go through Seoul, a Korean Air reservation will look odd next to everything else in your file. Our guides to Schengen visas, Japan visas and US visas quote what each checklist actually says.

How do you look up a Korean Air booking?

Korean Air's Book and Manage page offers two routes: My Trips for members and Find a trip for everyone else.[6] Its booking FAQ says that without logging in, you find your reservation by entering the booking reference number, the departure date and the passenger name.[1]

  1. Open koreanair.com and choose Find a trip under Book and Manage.
  2. Enter the booking reference printed on your PDF.
  3. Pick the departure date of the first flight on the booking.
  4. Enter the passenger name exactly as it appears on the booking.
  5. Compare what appears with your passport and form: names, flights, dates, cities.

Notice the extra field. Most airlines need only the code and surname; Korean Air also wants the departure date. If a lookup fails, check that you picked the date of the first flight on the reservation, not your return.

A practical note on the merger. Korean Air says Asiana flights departing on or after 17 December 2026 will be operated by Korean Air under Korean Air flight numbers, with flight numbers and booking information moved over in phases during November and early December 2026. From 17 December, changes and refunds on those bookings go through Korean Air or your agency.[4] If you hold an Asiana booking for travel after that date, expect the flight number on your papers to change. That's a documented airline change, not a problem with your file, but keep a copy of the notice in case anyone asks.

What does a person checking it actually see? Usually the same things you do: passenger names, flight numbers, dates, cities and the booking's status. That is why the details on your PDF must agree with your form. An officer comparing the two is looking for a match, not for a payment receipt, unless the checklist says otherwise.

What are Korean Air's name rules?

Korean Air's booking process asks for the passenger's name, gender, date of birth, phone number and email at step three.[1] On names, its policy is strict. Changing the passenger named on a ticket "is not permitted after the booking or purchase". A one-time correction is allowed only when the airline confirms it's the same person and one of these applies:[1]

  • A legal name change.
  • Correcting three or fewer letters in the English spelling, in either the surname or given name.
  • Changing an English name to a Korean name.
  • A change linked to a change of gender.

Korean Air waives the reissue fee for these corrections, but warns that for itineraries including other airlines, spelling changes may not be possible.[1] In plain terms: type it right the first time. On Indian passports the usual traps are a missing middle name, a surname printed in the given-name field, or initials that should be spelt out. Our name format guide covers these.

On a reservation from us there's no fee to fix a typo before we issue it. Check the preview, confirm, and we create it exactly as shown.

If your checklist demands a confirmed or refundable ticket, these Korean Air rules are the ones that matter:

When you payWebsite and app bookings are purchased at the time of booking.[1]

Refund penalties, from KoreaVary by how early you cancel; waived in Economy if refunded at least 91 days before departure, for involuntary refunds, or within 24 hours of purchase.[2]

Refund service chargeListed per currency, for example USD 30 or EUR 30 on international flights.[2]
Deadline to claimWithin 30 days of the ticket's expiry date.[2]

Our advice for a Korean visa: buy the cheapest fare whose rules allow a refund, accept that you may lose the penalty plus service charge if the visa is refused, and don't book long-haul onward flights until the visa is through. If you'd rather not risk the money, ask the visa centre whether your consular region will accept a reservation. The checklist that applies to your application is the one that counts.

What if the flight is a Korean Air codeshare?

Some flights sold with a KE number are flown by a partner. Korean Air explains that codeshare flights are operated by other airlines but sold under a Korean Air flight number, and that you can book and change them on the Korean Air website or app. Airport and in-flight services come from the partner, you check in at the operating airline's counter, and baggage rules and check-in times follow the operating airline.[1]

For a visa file this rarely matters, but it can confuse people at the lookup stage. The booking still sits with Korean Air, so Find a trip on koreanair.com is the place to check it. The itinerary will usually say "operated by" with the partner's name next to the flight. Leave that wording alone; it's accurate, and an officer who knows airlines will expect it.

Here's an example of how it fits together. Say you live in Chennai, you're applying for an Italian visa, and your cheapest realistic routing goes via Seoul. Your reservation shows Chennai to Seoul, Seoul to Rome, and Rome back the same way, with dates matching your hotel bookings and insurance. The Italian consulate's Mumbai checklist asks for return flight details or an airline reservation printout (quoted in our Schengen guide), so a held reservation is the right document. It's only the Korean visa, with its "confirmed, refundable" wording, where you'd switch to a paid refundable fare.

Before you submit a Korean Air reservation

  • The checklist really asks for a reservation, not a confirmed or refundable ticket.
  • Find a trip loads it with the code, first departure date and name.
  • Names and order match the passport, including middle names.
  • Seoul is on your genuine route, and the dates fit your hotel and insurance.
  • Asiana numbers on travel after 17 December 2026 are expected to change to KE numbers.[4]
  • Forms say "flight reservation", never "ticket".

Check it once when it arrives and again the day before you submit. See how visa officers verify flight reservations for what they can and can't see.

That's per passenger for one way or return; multi-city is priced per pair of legs. The price page has the details, order tracking shows progress, and a hotel booking can be added. A reservation stays valid for up to 2 weeks, with the exact period set by the airline, so time it close to submission.

Remember: a reservation is not a paid ticket and can't be used to fly. Whether a document is acceptable is decided by the consulate, the airline or immigration, not by us.

Korean Air dummy ticket: common questions

Is a Korean Air reservation accepted for a South Korea visa from India?

The C-3-9 checklist issued through VFS Global in India asks you to "Provide a confirmed, refundable flight ticket (e-ticket)". A held reservation does not meet that wording. Buy a refundable fare, or ask your visa centre in writing whether a reservation is acceptable for your consular region.

How do I check a Korean Air booking without an account?

Use Find a trip on koreanair.com. Korean Air asks for the booking reference number, the departure date and the passenger name. Pick the date of the first flight on the booking. If it fails, check the name order against the passport.

Can I reserve on koreanair.com and pay later?

Not on the website or app. Korean Air says online bookings must be purchased at the time of booking. Bookings made through other channels have their own ticketing deadline, which Korean Air says is given separately or shown in My Trips.

Does Korean Air have a 24-hour free cancellation?

For paid Economy international tickets, refund penalties and fees are waived when an entirely unused ticket is refunded within 24 hours of purchase, excluding reissued tickets. Use it if your plans genuinely change, not as a way to create a document for a visa.

What happens to my Asiana booking after the merger?

Korean Air says Asiana flights departing on or after 17 December 2026 will run under Korean Air flight numbers, with booking information transferred in phases during November and December 2026. After 17 December, changes and refunds go through Korean Air or your agency.

Can I correct a spelling mistake on a Korean Air ticket?

Once, in limited cases: three or fewer letters of the English spelling, a legal name change, English to Korean name, or a gender change. Korean Air waives the reissue fee for these. Itineraries with other airlines may not allow it, so check before travel.

Do visa-exempt nationals need anything from Korean Air for entry?

They need K-ETA approval before boarding, which Korea's Ministry of Justice says is not a visa and only meets part of the visa-free entry requirements. The airline checks your documents at check-in; immigration decides at arrival.
