A job seeker visa sits between a holiday and a move. You go to look for work, not to start a job you already have, and the stay is limited to months. That middle position is why people are unsure about flights. Will the consulate want proof you will come back? Do you need a return ticket for a visa that might turn into a work permit? The answer depends on the country, and the official wording is more specific than most forums suggest. Below we quote the real checklists for Germany's Opportunity Card, Austria's job-seeker visa, Portugal's job-seeker routes and Dubai's visa to explore job opportunities.
Job seeker visa flights: key facts
| Route | Length | Flight wording in the official source |
|---|---|---|
| Germany, Opportunity Card | 6 to 12 months (German Embassy Abu Dhabi)[2] | Funds for the stay "plus sufficient funds for the return flight".[1] |
| Austria, job-seeker visa | 6 months[3] | None; documents are passport, photo, accommodation, health insurance, means of subsistence.[3] |
| Portugal, old job seeker visa | 120 days, extendable by 60[5] | "Return transport ticket" was listed; route closed, replacement pending.[4][5] |
| Dubai, visit visa to explore jobs | 60, 90 or 120 days[6] | Not listed: photo, passport copy, university degree.[6] |
Do you need a flight ticket for a job seeker visa?
In the current official lists we read, no. Germany asks for money, Austria asks for nothing flight-related, and the Dubai page sticks to identity and qualification papers. Portugal was the one route that named a return ticket, and it no longer takes applications in that form.
That does not mean flights are irrelevant. A job-search stay ends on a fixed date unless you find work, so officers want to know you can leave if the search fails. Germany handles that by asking for return-flight money. Others handle it through the funds test in general. A held reservation can still be helpful where a checklist mentions a travel plan, but it is rarely the core document.
Plain advice: on a job seeker file, the parts that decide things are your qualifications, your funds and your motivation letter. Get those right first.
How do the job seeker routes compare?
This table puts the four routes side by side. Swipe sideways on a phone.
| Country | Who qualifies (official summary) | Money and insurance | Flight position | What we'd submit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Germany | Recognised qualification, or a qualification confirmed by ZAB plus German A1 or English B2[1] | Blocked account or other proof; health insurance for the whole stay[1] | Return-flight funds, not a ticket[1] | Funds evidence; reservation optional |
| Austria | At least 70 points as a very highly qualified worker[3] | Means of subsistence; insurance covering all risks[3] | Not mentioned | Nothing flight-related |
| Portugal | New skilled job seeker visa awaiting regulation[4] | Not yet published | Old route: return ticket[5] | Wait for the new checklist |
| UAE (Dubai) | Skill levels 1 to 3, or a recent top-500 university graduate, with a bachelor's degree[6] | Financial guarantee required[6] | Not listed on GDRFA's page | Ask the channel you apply through |
Germany's Opportunity Card: what the checklist asks
The Opportunity Card (Chancenkarte) is a national visa for looking for work in Germany. The German Missions in India publish a full checklist for it. Alongside the passport, forms and photos, it asks for proof of funds, proof of accommodation with a complete address, your degree or vocational qualification, a CV, health insurance for the whole stay and a signed motivation letter.[1]
The qualification part has two paths. Option 1 is a qualification already recognised for Germany, for example through the anabin database or a Statement of Comparability. Option 2 is a degree or at least two years of vocational training recognised in the country where you earned it, confirmed by Germany's Central Office for Foreign Education (ZAB), together with German at level A1 or English at level B2.[1]
The motivation letter has to say what work you are looking for, whether and since when you have been learning German, which companies you have applied to or been invited by, and why you chose Germany rather than another EU country.[1] That letter is worth far more effort than any travel document.
While you search, the card allows limited work: an average of up to 20 hours a week, plus a trial period of no more than two weeks linked to your qualification. Once you find suitable work, the checklist says the visa can be changed to a residence permit for employment.[1]
"Funds for the return flight": what does that mean in practice?
This is the only flight-related line, and it is about money. The India checklist asks for a blocked account "with sufficient funds currently amounting to at least 1,091€/month plus sufficient funds for the return flight", or a formal obligation letter from a sponsor in Germany, or current bank statements.[1] The German Embassy in Abu Dhabi words it the same way but shows 1,027 EUR a month, and says its visas are issued for a minimum of 6 and a maximum of 12 months.[2] The figures differ because each mission page was updated at a different time; use the amount your own mission shows on the day you apply.
How do you show you have enough for the flight home? The simplest honest route is to keep a margin above the monthly total. Say you plan a 12-month search: the blocked account covers the months, and your ordinary bank statement shows extra savings well above the price of a one-way flight home. A flight reservation is not required for this, though some applicants like to include a quote for the return leg to show they have checked the cost. If you do that, label it plainly as a reservation.
Also note the Abu Dhabi page's warning on insurance: it asks for incoming medical insurance or proof of public or private cover, and says "A travel insurance is not sufficient."[2] That trips up people who reuse a holiday policy.
Austria's job-seeker visa: no flight on the list
Austria's official migration portal describes a job-seeker visa for very highly qualified workers, valid for six months, for people who score at least 70 points on its criteria. You apply in person at the Austrian embassy or consulate in your home country or where you legally live.[3]
The documents listed are a valid travel document, a 45x35mm photo not older than six months, proof of local accommodation, health insurance covering all risks, and proof of adequate means of subsistence.[3] There is no flight item. If your particular embassy adds a travel itinerary to its local list, a reservation fits that, but do not add one by default. Our Austria visa guide covers short-stay visits.
Portugal: from a return ticket to a route on hold
Portugal used to be the classic job seeker destination with a ticket requirement. A March 2025 checklist from Portugal's visa centre in the UK listed a "Return transport ticket", meaning proof that you would leave Portugal at the end of the initial 120-day stay. The same document explained that the visa allowed 120 days in Portugal, extendable by 60 days with registration at the national employment institute, IEFP.[5]
That route has changed. Portugal's consular portal now shows a "Skilled Job Seeker Visa" marked "NOT YET AVAILABLE AT PORTUGUESE CONSULAR OFFICES", waiting for the regulation of Article 57-A of the Foreigners' Law.[4] Until that regulation is published, we cannot tell you what the new checklist will say about flights, and nobody else can either. Ignore any website that claims to know. When it opens, read the official list before booking anything. For visits, see our Portugal visa guide.
UAE: the visit visa to explore job opportunities
Dubai's GDRFA offers a visit visa for exploring job opportunities. It comes in 60, 90 or 120-day versions costing AED 200, 300 or 400 respectively, plus 5% VAT. Eligibility requires being a skilled worker at the first, second or third professional level or a graduate of one of the world's top 500 universities, with a bachelor's degree or equivalent, and meeting the required guarantee.[6]
GDRFA's document list is short: a photo, the passport copy (six months' validity minimum) and your university degree.[6] No ticket is listed there. News reports have mentioned a return ticket for this route; no official page we found says so, so check with the service centre or platform you apply through. For other UAE visit visas, see our Dubai and UAE guide.

When is a flight reservation useful for job seekers?
There are a few real uses, and they are smaller than people expect:
- A local checklist adds an itinerary. Some missions add travel-plan lines to national lists. If yours does, a reservation is the natural fit.
- You need a date for insurance or accommodation. A reservation fixes the arrival date that your health cover and first-month housing should start from.
- You visit first for interviews. A short business or visit trip for interviews has its own checklist, often with a flight reservation. Our business visa guide covers that.
- Airline check-in on a one-way. Flying out one way on a search visa? Keep the visa and housing proof handy, and read tips for single-direction trips.
And the limits: a reservation is not a ticket, it is not proof of funds, and it will not replace the return-flight money Germany asks for.
Step by step: the travel part of a job seeker application
- Check the route is open. Portugal's new visa, for example, is not yet accepting applications.
- Download your mission's checklist and note every travel-related word.
- Work out the funds, including any return-flight margin, using the amount your mission currently shows.
- Choose an arrival date that fits insurance and accommodation.
- Only if a reservation is asked for, book it two or three days before the appointment with your passport name exactly.
- Verify the PNR on the airline website; our PNR checking guide covers every screen.
- After approval, buy the real flight and keep the return-funds margin untouched.
What our reservations cost and how long they hold
Where a mission does want a travel plan, we can hold seats in your name and send the live PNR, which the airline website will display. Nothing is paid to the airline and you cannot fly on it. Holds expire within roughly 2 weeks, on a timetable each airline sets, so place the order near your appointment date.
Per person, single and return routes cost the same; multi-city bookings are priced per leg pair. Delivery takes about 10 minutes by email, with UPI, card and netbanking accepted through Razorpay. Check an order's status on this page, see prices in each currency, learn what a visa flight reservation is, or book a hotel for the first nights.
Mission asks for a travel plan?
A live-PNR hold ordered for your appointment week, ₹699 or $9 a head.
Please note: a list that says "return ticket", as Portugal's old one did, may need a bought fare; our booking might not meet it. Officials make that call, not us.
Frequently asked questions
Does the Opportunity Card require a return ticket?
No ticket is listed. The German Missions in India checklist asks for proof of funds for the stay "plus sufficient funds for the return flight", which is a money requirement. Keep savings above the monthly blocked-account total to cover the fare home. A reservation is optional; if you include one, describe it honestly as a reservation.
How much money do I need for the Opportunity Card?
It varies by mission page and date. The India checklist shows at least 1,091 euros a month, while the German Embassy in Abu Dhabi page shows 1,027 euros, both plus return-flight funds. Use the figure your own mission publishes when you apply, and check whether it accepts bank statements or a sponsor letter.
Can I still apply for Portugal's job seeker visa?
Not in its old form. Portugal's consular portal lists a Skilled Job Seeker Visa that is not yet available at consular offices, pending regulation of Article 57-A of the Foreigners' Law. Until the regulation and checklist are published, the document requirements, including anything about flights, are unknown. Check the portal before planning.
Does Austria's job-seeker visa need a flight booking?
The official migration portal does not list one. It asks for a travel document, photo, proof of accommodation, health insurance covering all risks and proof of means of subsistence, and you need at least 70 points. If your embassy's local checklist adds a travel itinerary, follow that list.
Is the UAE job-seeker visa issued without a ticket?
GDRFA Dubai's page lists a photo, passport copy and university degree, with no ticket. Some media reports mention a return ticket, but we could not confirm that on an official source. Ask the channel you apply through, whether the online platform or a service centre, what it needs before you pay.
Can a job seeker visa turn into a work permit?
For Germany, yes: the India checklist says the Opportunity Card will be changed to a residence permit for employment once you find adequate work. Other countries have their own rules. Flights are not part of that switch, so there is no need to hold a return booking for the whole search period.
Should I fly one way on a job seeker visa?
Many people do, because they hope to stay. The visa is your permission to enter, and Germany wants return-flight money rather than a ticket. Carry the visa, insurance and accommodation proof. Nervous about check-in? Our one-way travel note covers what desk staff tend to ask.
