People who land a job abroad often assume the visa file needs a plane ticket, because their last holiday visa did. Work routes are built differently. The deciding papers are the job offer, the sponsor's approval, your qualifications and sometimes a medical. The flight usually comes last, and in most cases your employer books it once the visa is stamped or the permit is approved. Below we go through what six official sources actually say about flights for work visas, quote them, and explain the few situations where a held reservation is genuinely useful. We use Indian applicants as the main example, and say where the rules are wider.
Work visa flights: key facts
| Work visa question | Official answer, in brief |
|---|---|
| UK Skilled Worker: flight needed? | No. The GOV.UK list of what you must provide covers the sponsorship reference, English, passport, job title, salary, occupation code and sponsor licence.[2] |
| Germany employment visa: flight needed? | Not on the checklist we read. It asks for travel health insurance "valid from intended travel date".[3] |
| Ireland employment visa | No flight item, but if your route passes through other countries you must show the visas needed for them.[4] |
| Canada work permit (applied from abroad) | At arrival: passport, visitor visa if needed, medical results if needed, and proof of approval such as the port of entry letter.[5] |
| UAE job-contract entry visa | Documents listed: a photo and a passport copy with six months' validity; the work permit must be endorsed by MOHRE.[7] |
| India, ECR passports | Emigration Clearance is needed for jobs in 19 designated ECR countries.[8] |
Do you need a flight booking for a work visa?
Usually not. None of the work-route document lists we checked for the UK, Germany, Ireland, Canada or the UAE contains a line asking for a ticket or a reservation. That is quite different from short-stay visit visas, where a "flight reservation" line is common.
The reason is simple. A visit visa officer is testing whether you will leave on time, so return dates matter. A work visa officer is testing whether the job is real and you qualify for it. Your departure date is not the point; your start date is. If anything, the date that matters on a work file is the one in your employment contract.
So if an agent tells you a "confirmed air ticket" is compulsory for a Skilled Worker or German employment visa, ask them to show you the line on the official checklist. Sometimes it exists at a particular consulate. Usually it does not.
Our honest view: for most work visas you can save the ₹699. Spend that energy on getting the contract, degree attestation and insurance exactly right.
What do official work visa checklists say about flights?
Here is the side-by-side view. We quote or closely summarise the official page, then say what we would actually put in the file. On a phone, swipe the table sideways.
| Destination | Work route | Official wording on travel | What we'd do |
|---|---|---|---|
| United Kingdom | Skilled Worker visa | No flight in the required list; apply up to 3 months before the job starts.[1][2] | Nothing flight-related |
| Germany | Skilled worker with a degree (Section 18b) | Travel health insurance from the "intended travel date"; no ticket item.[3] | Pick a realistic travel date for the insurance |
| Ireland | Employment visa (employment permit holders) | Visas needed for any countries on your "travel path"; application letter states how long you intend to stay.[4] | A reservation can show the route and transit points |
| Canada | Work permit applied from outside Canada | Passport, visa if needed, medical results if needed, proof of approval.[5] | Nothing flight-related |
| United States | Temporary worker visas (H, L and others) | General State Department advice: buy tickets only after the visa.[6] | Wait for the visa, then book |
| UAE (Dubai) | Entry visa linked with a job contract | Photo and passport copy; MOHRE work permit endorsement.[7] | Employer handles it; nothing flight-related |
UK Skilled Worker visa: is a flight on the list?
No. GOV.UK spells out what you must provide when you apply: the certificate of sponsorship reference number from your employer, proof of English, a valid passport, your job title and annual salary, the occupation code, and the employer's name and sponsor licence number.[2] Depending on your situation you may also need savings evidence, tuberculosis test results or a criminal record certificate. A ticket is not among them.
Timing is the useful part for planning. You can apply up to 3 months before your job start date, and from outside the UK a decision usually arrives within 3 weeks.[1] That means you can usually leave flight shopping until the visa is approved and still have weeks to spare. If you want to pencil in dates for your own planning, do it in a spreadsheet, not on a paid fare.
Germany employment visa: insurance, not tickets
German national visas for work are handled under national rules, so each mission publishes its own checklist. The one we read in full, from the German Embassy in Islamabad for skilled workers holding a university degree (Section 18b of the Residence Act, version 10/24), lists the application form, CV, employer's declaration, signed employment contract, a job description, degree certificates with proof of recognition and, at item 15, travel health insurance "valid from intended travel date" until your regular German health insurance begins.[3] There is no flight item. The visa fee shown is 75 EUR.
That insurance line is the only place your travel date really appears. You need a start date for the policy, which should sit a few days before the contract start. Notice how this differs from Germany's short-stay checklists, such as the business one from India, which list a "Flight reservation".[9] If your file is for work, do not copy the tourist checklist out of habit.
Also note what is missing from the German list: any request to prove a return. You are moving to work, not visiting, so nobody expects a ticket home.
Ireland employment visa: the "travel path" rule
Ireland is worth a closer look because its list does touch on the journey. The Irish Immigration Service document of required papers for all employment visa applications includes this point: if your travel path involves other countries, you must show that you have the necessary visas in your passport for those countries, or explain why not.[4] The same list asks for medical or travel insurance and a signed application letter covering, among other things, how long you intend to stay and where you will live.
This is where a reservation can earn its keep. Say you are flying from Hyderabad to Dublin via London. A held booking showing the London connection makes it obvious which transit rules apply, and you can then show you have checked them. If you route through a Gulf hub instead, the reservation makes that equally clear. It is not a required item, but it answers a question the checklist raises. Our guide to transit and layover rules helps with the connection side, and the Ireland visa guide covers the visit route.
Canada work permit: what the border officer asks
For a work permit applied for from outside Canada, the approval does not put a permit in your hand. IRCC sends a port of entry letter of introduction, and the actual work permit is issued when you arrive. The arrival page tells you to bring your passport, your visitor visa if you need one to travel, and valid immigration medical exam results if you needed a medical. You must show proof that the work permit application was approved; the port of entry letter is one way to do it.[5]
No ticket is mentioned. Bring the job offer, LMIA copy if one applied, and the proofs of experience you used in the application, because the officer at the airport can ask about them. For visit visas to Canada the picture is different, and our Canada visa guide covers that.
US temporary worker visas: petition first, tickets last
For H-1B, L-1 and similar categories the decisive document is the approved petition from US Citizenship and Immigration Services, followed by a consular interview. The State Department, in guidance written for visitors, says to hold off buying flights until a visa is in hand.[6] We apply the same caution to worker visas. Administrative processing after an interview can take time, and a non-refundable fare bought too early is money at risk. Our US visa guide explains the interview stage.
Gulf work visas and India's emigration clearance
For jobs in the Gulf, the employer normally drives the process. Dubai's GDRFA describes its job-contract entry visa as a permit that lets you stay 60 days from entry while the residency is completed. Only two documents appear: your photograph and a copy of a passport with six months or more remaining. The one condition is that the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation has endorsed the work permit.[7] You will not be asked to upload a flight. Most employers book and pay for the joining ticket themselves.
The Indian side matters more than the flight. According to an April 2026 overview from the Ministry of External Affairs, holders of Emigration Check Required (ECR) passports need Emigration Clearance when going abroad for employment to 19 designated ECR countries, including the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Oman, Bahrain, Malaysia and Thailand.[8] The same document says the eMigrate system is linked with the Bureau of Immigration at airports so that clearances can be checked online. If your passport is ECR, get the clearance done through your registered recruiting agent or employer before you fly. A flight reservation cannot replace it and does not help with it.
If you are visiting the UAE for an interview before any job offer, that is a visit, not a work entry. Our Dubai and UAE guide explains those rules.
When does a flight reservation actually help a worker?
There are honest, useful cases. These are the ones we see most:
- The checklist asks for an itinerary. Some missions add "travel itinerary" or "travel plan" to work-related lists. Read your own consulate's version; if the word is there, a reservation fits it.
- Your route crosses other countries. As with Ireland, a booking shows which transit rules apply.
- You travel first for interviews. That trip is a business or visit visa, and those checklists often ask for a reservation. See our business visa guide.
- You are on a job seeker route. Those have their own rules about return travel money; our job seeker visa guide compares them.
- Insurance needs dates. A held booking pins down the date your travel health cover should start.
What a reservation does not do: it does not prove the job, it does not speed up a decision, and it is not a ticket you can fly on.
One-way or return when you move abroad for work?
One way is normal. You hold, or will receive, permission to live and work in the destination, and that permission is your reason to enter. None of the work-route sources above asks to see a return.
The exceptions are practical rather than legal. If your work visa is a single-entry vignette that must be converted after arrival, or a short entry visa while residency is processed, keep the approval letters together with your passport. Airline staff at check-in look for proof that you can enter. A clear permit letter answers that question far better than any return booking would. For the general difference between the two, see onward ticket vs return ticket.

Step by step: handling the flight part of a work visa
- Get the official checklist for your route from the embassy, consulate or visa centre that serves where you live.
- Search it for travel words: ticket, reservation, itinerary, travel plan, travel path, travel date.
- If none appear, leave flights out. Use your contract start date to plan insurance.
- If an itinerary is asked for, reserve close to the appointment, with your name exactly as in the passport.
- Look the booking up yourself on the airline website using the PNR and surname. Our walkthrough on verifying a reservation shows how.
- ECR passport? Arrange Emigration Clearance before the travel date.
- Buy the real ticket (or let the employer do it) once the visa or approval is in hand.
If you do need one: price and timing
What we send is a held booking carrying a live PNR under your name, so an officer can open it on the carrier's website. Nobody has paid the fare, and you could not board with it. A hold survives for up to 2 weeks, but the precise expiry is the airline's choice, so plan to order a few days before the appointment instead of weeks ahead.
Those figures apply per traveller, whichever direction you fly; for multi-city plans we count each pair of legs. It lands in your inbox roughly 10 minutes after payment, which Razorpay takes via UPI, cards or netbanking. Order status sits on our tracking page, every currency is on the pricing page, and the basics of a visa flight reservation are explained separately.
Consulate asking for an itinerary?
Held booking with a live PNR for your chosen route, from ₹699 or $9 each.
Please note: if your consulate's wording says "confirmed ticket" or "paid ticket", our held booking might fall short of it. Do what the checklist says, and keep the label honest: reservation, not purchase.
Frequently asked questions
Can I submit a dummy ticket with my work visa application?
Yes, where your consulate's list mentions a reservation or itinerary; a genuine held booking with a checkable PNR is exactly what such a line means. Where flights are absent, as on the UK Skilled Worker list, an extra booking just adds paper. Call it a reservation in your cover letter, because that is what it is.
Do I need a return ticket to fly out on a work visa?
The official work-route sources we checked do not ask for one. Your permit or visa is the reason you can enter, and airline staff look for that at check-in. Keep approval letters, the visa and any port of entry letter with your passport. A return booking is not a substitute for those.
My employer will buy my ticket. What do I show the consulate?
Usually nothing about flights. Show what the checklist asks for: contract, employer declaration, qualifications, insurance. If the checklist does ask for an itinerary, ask HR for a held booking or use a reservation in your name with dates that fit the contract start. The company can issue the real ticket after approval.
Does a flight reservation make a work visa faster?
No official source we read links flight evidence to processing speed. Work visa decisions turn on the sponsor's approval, qualifications and background checks. If a decision feels slow, the usual cause is a missing document or a pending sponsor step, so chase those instead.
Do ECR passport holders need anything extra at the airport?
Yes, for employment in the ECR countries. India's Ministry of External Affairs says ECR passport holders need Emigration Clearance for jobs in 19 designated countries, and airports can check clearances online. Arrange it through your registered recruiting agent or employer on eMigrate before you travel. Booking flights early does nothing to speed up or replace it.
Is a reservation useful if I travel for a job interview first?
Often, yes. An interview trip is a business or visit trip, and many of those checklists ask for a flight reservation that matches the invitation dates. Book the dates you will really travel, keep the return close to the interview, and explain in the covering letter that you are attending interviews, not starting work.
How early should I reserve if my consulate wants an itinerary?
We would order it about three days ahead of the appointment. Holds expire within a fortnight at the latest, on a date each carrier controls, so a month-old booking could already be dead when an officer checks it. If processing is long and the consulate may check later, ask them how they verify bookings.
