Dummy Ticket for Slovakia Visa: Booking, Paid Ticket and the Vienna Question

For a Slovak Schengen visa, the embassy checklist we could read asks for a round-trip flight booking and says to buy the ticket only after the visa is granted. It also says first-time Schengen tourists must show fully paid tickets. So a held reservation suits repeat travellers; first-timers should check their own centre's list.

Slovakia is a small Schengen application with one large catch in the official wording. The embassy checklist we could read says a flight booking is fine, then adds that first-time Schengen tourists must show fully paid tickets. If you have travelled to Europe before, that line probably doesn't touch you. If this is your first Schengen visa, it matters a lot. This guide explains both cases, how flying into Vienna affects where you apply, and what to put in the file. Official sources are numbered at the end.

Who needs a visa for Slovakia?

Indian passport holders need a Schengen visa. India is on the EU's common visa list, linked from the Commission's page on applying.[5] There is no separate Slovak national visa for short visits; you get the same uniform sticker as any other Schengen state, valid across the area for up to 90 days in 180.

Apply to Slovakia only if Slovakia is your main destination. The Abu Dhabi list is blunt about it: an application "will not be accepted unless the main destination is Slovakia". If your stays are equal across countries, apply to the first country you enter.[2] That rule is where the Vienna question comes in, below.

UK, US, Canadian and other visa-free nationals do not need a visa for short trips. Residents of the UAE or other Gulf states on Indian passports apply in their country of residence. The Abu Dhabi list also wants the UAE residence visa valid at least three months beyond the visa you're requesting.[2]

What does the Slovak checklist say about flights?

We read the short-stay checklist issued by the Embassy of the Slovak Republic in Abu Dhabi and published by VFS Global. Under "Air ticket" it says:[2]

  • Line one: "Round-trip flight ticket booking."
  • Line two: "The ticket should be bought only after granting the visa (first time travellers to Schengen must provide fully paid tickets - tourist)."

So the default is a booking, and the embassy itself tells you not to buy before the decision. The exception is a tourist who has never held a Schengen visa: for them, the same line asks for fully paid tickets. The hotel section follows the same pattern. Bookings must show proof of payment, and first-time travellers must show fully paid accommodation.[2]

We could not find a date on that checklist, and it still mentions Covid-19 cover, so it may be older than it looks. We also couldn't load the New Delhi embassy's own lists in October 2026. Treat the Abu Dhabi wording as a strong signal of how Slovak missions think, and read your own centre's list before deciding.

First Schengen visa? Read this before booking anything

If your passport has no previous Schengen visa and you're applying as a tourist, the Abu Dhabi wording asks for a fully paid ticket. A held reservation does not meet that line, and we wouldn't tell you otherwise. Your options are:

  1. Check your own centre's checklist. If the India list for your city says "flight reservation" or "booking" without the first-timer note, a reservation fits.
  2. If the paid-ticket note is there, buy a fully refundable or changeable fare. Read the airline's refund rules before paying, not after.
  3. Ask by email if unsure. A written answer from the embassy or provider is worth more than any forum post.

Repeat travellers, business visitors and family visitors sit under the default line, "round-trip flight ticket booking". For them a genuine reservation is exactly what the wording describes. Holding older Schengen visas also helps your file generally, so include copies; the Abu Dhabi list asks for them.[2]

Our honest take: a first-time tourist going only to Slovakia should plan on a paid, refundable fare unless their own checklist says otherwise. Everyone else can file a verifiable reservation and buy after approval, which is what the embassy itself recommends.

Flying in via Vienna: which embassy do you apply to?

Bratislava has its own airport, but Vienna's sits just across the Austrian border, and you may find better connections there. That raises a fair question: if you land in Austria, should you apply to Austria? Not if Slovakia is where you will spend your nights. The main-destination rule looks at where you stay longest, not at the airport.[2][5]

Example: you land in Vienna on 9 December, take the road to Bratislava the same afternoon, spend eight nights in Slovakia, and fly home from Vienna on the 17th. Slovakia is your main destination. Apply to Slovakia, and show the Vienna flights on the reservation plus a note on how you get across the border. If instead you spend four nights in Vienna and four in Bratislava, the stays are equal, so the first point of entry decides. Here that is Austria; see our Austria visa guide.

Your entry check happens wherever you first enter Schengen. On a Gulf or Istanbul connection to Vienna, Austrian officers check you at Vienna. Connect in Frankfurt or Munich instead, and you are checked in Germany. Our sample below shows a European-hub routing on an airline's own page.

Two handling rules are worth copying from that list. Every original goes in with a photocopy. And anything not in English must be translated by a certified translator.[2]

Applying from the UAE or another Gulf country

The checklist we've quoted is the Abu Dhabi one, so Gulf residents can follow it closely. A few points in it are specific to residents:[2]

  • Residence visa and Emirates ID still valid three months or more past your Schengen exit date, plus copies.
  • An HR letter with your job title, start date, monthly income and approved leave dates, signed and stamped.
  • Business owners show a valid trade licence, translated into English if the owner's name appears only in Arabic.
  • Bank statements for three months, stamped and signed by the bank, plus the salary account if you use another account.
  • Translations into English by a certified translator for anything in another language.

Your flight reservation should normally start and end in the Gulf city where you live, because that is where you're expected to return. A Dubai to Vienna return, plus the road leg to Bratislava, would be one sensible shape. Gulf-based Indians will find more in dummy tickets for Gulf-based Indian expats.

Slips that hold up Slovak files

  • Applying to Slovakia for a trip that's mostly elsewhere. The embassy says it won't accept the file.
  • Unpaid hotel bookings. The list wants proof of payment; a "pay at property" confirmation may not be enough.
  • A first-time tourist filing an unpaid reservation where the centre's list asks for fully paid tickets.
  • Unsigned insurance. The list asks for a policy signed and stamped by the insurer's representative.
  • Leave dates shorter than the trip. The HR letter's leave period should cover every travel day.
  • Sponsor statements without a notarised letter from the parent or spouse paying for the trip.

Where do Indian applicants apply?

Provider arrangements changed recently. In November 2025, Slovakia's Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs awarded VFS Global a five-year contract covering all visa types from 83 countries, India among them, with the first new centres opening in January 2026.[3] Before that, Indian applicants went through BLS International. Check the Embassy of the Slovak Republic in New Delhi page for the provider and cities that apply on the day you book.[4]

As always, the provider only collects files and biometrics. The decision is made by the embassy. Our separate note, how to get a dummy ticket for a Slovakia visa, is a shorter booking walk-through.

When to apply and when to book the flight

The Commission sets a window running from six months out to a fortnight before departure.[5] The Abu Dhabi list still says no more than 90 days ahead, which reflects older rules, so check what your centre allows.[2]

Book the reservation late. It can last up to 14 days, but each airline chooses the real limit. If your appointment is on a Tuesday, booking on the Saturday or Sunday before is about right. Check it on the airline's "Manage booking" page the night before.

At the border: what changes once you have the visa

After approval, the reservation's job is done. Buy the fare you actually want, ideally on the dates you showed, and carry the paid ticket, the hotel confirmation and your insurance. Whoever checks you at your first Schengen airport, Austrian, German or Slovak, can ask how long you're staying, where, and how you'll get home. Short, consistent answers backed by those papers are all that's needed.

Step by step: the flight part of a Slovakia application

  1. Confirm Slovakia is your main destination. Count nights, not airports.
  2. Find out if you're a first-time Schengen tourist. If yes, check whether your list asks for paid tickets.
  3. Book accommodation with proof of payment, as the list asks.
  4. Reserve or buy the flight on dates that match the hotel and leave letter.
  5. Verify the PNR on the airline's site. Our step-by-step check shows how, and matching hotel and flight dates covers the common mismatch.
  6. Write the cover letter describing it accurately as a "flight reservation" or "booked ticket", whichever it is.
  7. Carry a paid ticket to the border. Schengen entry checks look at money and return plans as well as the visa.[5]

Slovakia visa flight questions

Can I submit a dummy ticket for a Slovakia visa?

For most applicants, yes. The Slovak Embassy checklist we read asks for a "round-trip flight ticket booking" and says to buy the ticket only after the visa is granted. The exception is first-time Schengen tourists, who are asked for fully paid tickets. Check your own centre's list, because wording can differ between missions.

I've never had a Schengen visa. Do I need a paid ticket?

On the Abu Dhabi list, yes: "first time travellers to Schengen must provide fully paid tickets". If your India centre's list has the same note, a reservation won't satisfy it. Choose a fare with free cancellation or changes, and save the payment confirmation for a possible refund claim.

I'm flying into Vienna. Should I apply to Austria or Slovakia?

Count your nights: the country with the biggest share takes your application. If you land in Vienna but stay mostly in Slovakia, apply to Slovakia. If the nights are equal, the first point of entry decides, which on a Vienna arrival would be Austria.

Who processes Slovak visas in India in 2026?

VFS Global was awarded Slovakia's global visa contract in November 2025, covering India, with new centres from January 2026. BLS International handled Indian applications before that. Confirm the current provider on the Slovak Embassy New Delhi page before you book a slot.

How long before the trip should I book the reservation?

Two or three days before your appointment. A hold of ours lasts no more than 14 days and sometimes less, depending on the carrier, so an early booking can expire before anyone looks. If the appointment moves, book a new one.

Does the hotel need to be paid for a Slovak visa?

The Abu Dhabi list asks for a hotel booking "confirmed with proof of payment", and fully paid accommodation for first-time Schengen travellers. Choose a refundable rate so you can cancel if the visa is refused, and keep the payment confirmation for the file.
