Cyprus sits in an odd spot. It is an EU member, it takes part in Schengen cooperation, and yet in October 2026 it still runs its own border checks and issues its own visa. That changes how you plan flights for it. A Cyprus visa does not let you into Greece or Italy, and a Schengen visa only helps you in Cyprus if it is the right kind. This guide sorts out which situation you are in, then covers what the official list asks for on flights and how to build a reservation that fits. Sources are numbered at the end.

Is Cyprus part of the Schengen area yet?
Not fully. The European Commission's Schengen page counts 29 countries in the area and describes Cyprus separately: it participates in Schengen cooperation, but the Council has not yet abolished internal border controls.[1] In practice, that means three things for you:
- Flights between Cyprus and Schengen countries have passport control at both ends.
- A visa issued by Cyprus is a national visa, valid for Cyprus only.
- A Schengen visa does not automatically cover Cyprus. It needs to be the right type (see below).
No date for full membership had been fixed when we checked in October 2026. When it comes, these rules will change, and we'll update this page.
Already hold a Schengen visa? You may not need a Cyprus visa
This is the most useful fact on the page for many Indian travellers. Cyprus recognises certain foreign visas as equal to its own under EU Decision 565/2014. The High Commission's wording is that holders of a valid "double or multiple entry Schengen visa" need no Cyprus short-stay visa for stays up to 90 days in any 180-day period, and the same applies to residence permits issued by Schengen states.[2] Romania's foreign ministry refers to the same decision when explaining which older visas work for Cyprus.[3]
Three practical catches:
- Single-entry visas don't count. The wording says double or multiple entry.
- The visa must be valid for the whole Cyprus stay. If your multiple-entry German visa expires on 20 March, plan to leave Cyprus before then.
- The 90/180 limit still applies. Plan the dates so you stay inside it.
Say you have a two-year multiple-entry Schengen visa from your last trip to France. You could spend a week in Cyprus, flying from Mumbai through a Gulf hub, without any Cyprus application. Your airline's check-in staff will still want to see that visa, so carry it and the passport it's in.
Who needs a Cyprus visa?
If you hold an Indian passport and do not have a qualifying Schengen visa or residence permit, you need a Cyprus visa. Cyprus publishes a list of nationalities that need one, and most non-EU countries are on it, with exemptions for some biometric passports from countries such as Serbia, Ukraine and Georgia.[2] UK, US and EU citizens visit without a visa.
Gulf residents on Indian or other visa-required passports apply where they live. A UAE residence permit on its own does not replace the visa.
What does the Cyprus checklist say about flights?
The list published by the High Commission of Cyprus in London is short and practical: a passport, medical travel insurance of at least €30,000, evidence of funds, a letter from your employer or place of study, proof of accommodation, and a "Travel Itinerary".[2]
It does not say "paid ticket" or "confirmed ticket". An itinerary is a plan of travel, and a genuine flight reservation in your name, showing the outbound and return flights, is a clear way to present it. We could not retrieve the India-specific checklist from the visa centre's site in October 2026, so download your own centre's version before the appointment. If it asks for something stricter, follow it.
Our view: for a Cyprus tourist visa, a verifiable return reservation that lines up with your hotel and insurance is the right document. Don't pay for a fare until the visa sticker is in your passport, unless your centre's list explicitly asks for a paid ticket.
What should a Cyprus "travel itinerary" show?
The list doesn't define the term, so here is what we'd expect a decision-maker to look for, based on how itineraries are used across EU visa files. Think of it as the travel story in one or two pages.
- Every traveller's full name, spelt as in the passport.
- The outbound flight into Cyprus, with date, airports and airline.
- The return or onward flight, showing you leave within the visa period you've asked for.
- Connections, so the routing (and any transit country) is visible.
- A PNR the officer could enter on the airline's own website.
- Dates matching the hotel and insurance to the day.
A short day plan on a separate sheet helps too. Two lines a day is plenty: Larnaca old town on day two, Paphos on day three, and so on. It reads as a real holiday rather than a list of documents.

Money and accommodation: how they connect to the flight
The High Commission's list asks for evidence of funds and proof of accommodation alongside the itinerary.[2] It doesn't publish a daily amount, so we won't invent one. What matters for the flight part is that the three documents tell the same story. If the reservation lands in Larnaca on 12 April and leaves on 20 April, the hotel should run from the 12th to the 20th, and your bank balance should look sensible for eight nights in a holiday destination.

Where do Indian applicants apply?
Applications in India go through VFS Global, which takes in files at its Cyprus visa centres and forwards them to the High Commission of the Republic of Cyprus in New Delhi. Check the VFS Global Cyprus India page for the current list of cities and appointment rules. We could not open it directly in October 2026, so we haven't reproduced it here.
Timing rules follow the familiar pattern: the High Commission in London quotes 15 days for a normal decision, extendable to 45.[2] Apply well before your trip, and book the reservation just before the appointment rather than when you first start planning. Any booking we make is held for two weeks at most, and the carrier can set a shorter hold.
Routes, connections and the transit question
Cyprus has two main international airports, Larnaca (LCA) and Paphos (PFO). From India you'll change planes somewhere, and the connection point affects your paperwork more than for most countries.

Our tip: if you only have a Cyprus visa, a connection through a Gulf hub keeps things simple, because you never touch a Schengen border. What airlines and border officers check
At check-in in India, airline staff look for the document that lets you into Cyprus: a Cyprus visa, or a qualifying Schengen visa or residence permit. If you're relying on a Schengen visa, have it ready and know that it is double or multiple entry. Explaining that at the counter is easier with the High Commission's wording saved on your phone.
At Larnaca or Paphos, the officer can ask about the purpose and length of stay, where you're staying, and how you'll leave. This is the point to show a paid return or onward ticket, not a reservation. Keep the hotel booking and insurance handy as well.
Common slips on Cyprus applications
- Applying for a Cyprus visa you don't need. Check your passport for a valid double- or multiple-entry Schengen visa first.
- Relying on a single-entry Schengen visa. The recognition rule covers double and multiple entry only.
- Booking a Schengen-airport connection without checking transit rules. A cheap fare via Europe can create a transit problem a Gulf routing wouldn't.
- Assuming the Cyprus visa covers a side trip to Greece. It doesn't, while Cyprus remains outside full Schengen.
- Insurance below €30,000, or not covering every day of the stay.
- Itinerary dates that drift from the hotel booking by a night at either end.
Most of these are fixed in ten minutes at home and cost days if spotted at the counter. Read your file once from the officer's side of the desk before you go.

The last row is the awkward one. A Cyprus visa is national, so a separate Schengen visa is needed for Greece. Ask the missions before you build the itinerary, because the order of applications affects the dates on both reservations.
Step by step: the flight part of a Cyprus application
- Check your passport for a Schengen visa. If it is double or multiple entry and valid for the dates, you may not need to apply at all.
- If you do need a Cyprus visa, download your centre's current checklist and read the flight line.
- Book accommodation and choose flight dates that fit it exactly.
- Pick a routing that avoids transit problems, usually through a non-Schengen hub.
- Make the reservation in the last few days before your slot, copying each name letter for letter from the passport.

- After approval, buy the real fare and carry it to the airport.

Is Cyprus a Schengen country in 2026?
Not fully. The European Commission says Cyprus takes part in Schengen cooperation but the Council has not yet abolished its internal border controls, and integration is under way. So Cyprus still issues national visas and checks passports on flights to and from the Schengen area. Check again before you travel, as this could change.
Can I visit Cyprus with my Schengen visa?
Yes, if it is a valid double- or multiple-entry Schengen visa, for stays up to 90 days in any 180, according to the High Commission of Cyprus. Single-entry visas don't qualify, and the rule excludes citizens of Turkey and Azerbaijan. The visa must be valid for your whole stay in Cyprus.
Will a reserved, unpaid flight do for a Cyprus visa?
The official list asks for a "Travel Itinerary", not a paid ticket, so a genuine reservation showing your return trip fits that request. Your visa centre's checklist is the final word for your application. If yours asks for a paid or confirmed ticket, buy a refundable fare instead.
Does a Cyprus visa let me visit Greece?
No. A Cyprus visa is national and covers Cyprus only, because Cyprus is not yet fully inside Schengen. To visit Greece or any other Schengen country you need a Schengen visa. If Greece is your main stop, a Greek multiple-entry visa may cover Cyprus too.
How long does a Cyprus visa take?

Expect questions about why you're visiting, how long you'll stay and where. You should be able to show a paid return or onward ticket, your accommodation and enough money for the stay. Carry your insurance and, if you entered on a Schengen visa, the passport holding it.
