Visa files for older travellers look different from a young professional's. There is often no employer letter, the money may sit in a pension or fixed deposits, and a son or daughter abroad is frequently paying for the trip. None of that is a weakness in itself. Officers see retired parents visiting family every day. What they need is a file that explains the arrangement clearly, with dates that agree across every document, and the flight reservation is the piece that sets those dates. This guide covers the official rules that matter most for senior travellers, the age-related changes worth knowing about, and the practical side of flying later in life.
Key facts for senior travellers
| Topic | Official position |
|---|---|
| Schengen flight evidence (Germany, India) | "Flight reservation" on the checklist; "A booked flight ticket does not result in a preferred processing of the application."[1] |
| Proof for retired applicants (Germany, India) | Pension statements for the last three months and/or proof of regular income from property or business, plus bank statements for the last 3 months stamped by the bank.[1] |
| Schengen travel insurance | Minimum medical cover of €30,000 for the whole stay.[1] |
| US visa interviews | Since 1 October 2025, applicants over 79 generally need an in-person interview like everyone else.[4] |
| Canada for parents and grandparents | The Super Visa allows stays of up to 5 years at a time and requires private health insurance of at least $100,000, valid for one year from entry.[5][6] |
| UK flight evidence | Flight bookings are listed among less useful documents unless you are transiting.[3] |
| Our price | ₹699 in India or $9 worldwide, per passenger. A couple pays for two. |
Do senior travellers need a paid ticket for a visa?
No, not for the main visitor visas. Age does not change what the checklist asks for. In India, the German Schengen tourism list wants a flight reservation and makes clear that paying for a ticket brings no faster decision.[1] The UK treats flight bookings as low-value evidence for visitors.[3] On the American side, the State Department's visitor page says ticket purchases should wait until a visa is issued.[2]
There is a good reason to be extra careful with money here. An older applicant is more likely to have a trip delayed by a medical appointment, a family event or a slow decision. Buying a non-refundable fare early is a needless risk. A held reservation shows the plan; you buy the real ticket once the visa is in the passport.
What does a Schengen file look like for a retired parent?
It swaps the employer letter for pension and asset evidence, and often adds a sponsor. The German missions' tourism checklist for India is a good model because it spells out both routes.[1]
- If you pay for yourself: pension statements for the last three months, or proof of regular income from property or a business, plus your own bank statements for three months, stamped by the bank.
- If a son or daughter pays: a sponsor letter, a copy of the sponsor's passport, the sponsor's bank statements for three months stamped by the bank, and a document proving the relationship, such as a birth certificate.
- In every case: overseas medical cover of €30,000 or more spanning every day of the visit, and the flight reservation.
The insurance point deserves a moment. Before you buy, check whether the policy caps cover by age band and how it treats pre-existing conditions. Read the policy wording, not just the headline. The checklist only states the minimum; it is up to you to find a policy that actually suits an older traveller.
For the general Schengen mechanics see our Schengen visa guide. If a child is inviting you, our family visit guide and sponsorship letter guide cover the host's side.
How should older visitors approach a UK application?
Focus on ties and funds, not flights. Flight bookings sit on GOV.UK's list of weaker visitor evidence.[3] For a retired parent, the persuasive evidence is usually the home you own, your pension, other family who remain at home, and a believable trip length. If a child in the UK is paying, include their letter and financial evidence too.
A reservation still has a quiet use. It forces you to fix dates, which then flow into the cover letter and the sponsor's letter. Say your daughter in Leeds invites you for six weeks over her baby's due date in March. The reservation, the invitation and the planned stay should all describe the same six weeks. What changed for older US visa applicants?
The interview exemption for older applicants has gone. From 1 October 2025, the State Department says all nonimmigrant applicants, including those over the age of 79, will usually have to appear in person; the exceptions are narrow, mainly diplomats and certain renewals within a year of expiry.[4] If your parents last got their visas without attending the consulate, plan for an interview this time.
That has practical knock-on effects. The interview city may be a flight or a long train ride away. Book that domestic journey with the same care as the main trip, and choose a time of day that suits the person attending. The flight reservation for the US trip itself is optional; official US advice is still to wait for the visa before paying a fare.[2] More in our US visa guide.
Is the Canadian Super Visa better than a visitor visa for parents?
For long stays, often yes. IRCC describes the Super Visa as letting parents and grandparents visit children or grandchildren in Canada for up to 5 years at a time, with multiple entries over a period of up to 10 years. For stays of six months or less, IRCC points to the ordinary visitor visa instead.[5]
The Super Visa has requirements a visitor visa does not:[6][7]
- A signed letter of invitation from the child or grandchild, who must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or registered Indian aged 18 or over and living in Canada, and who must meet a minimum income.
- Private health insurance from a Canadian insurer, or an approved foreign insurer, valid for at least one year from entry, with at least $100,000 emergency cover for health care, hospitalisation and repatriation. It can be paid in full or in instalments with a deposit and must be valid for each entry.
- An immigration medical exam.
Neither route lists a paid ticket. A reservation is a reasonable way to show when your parent intends to arrive, especially for a visitor visa where the invitation states the dates. See our Canada visa guide.
Which route suits which older traveller?
| Destination | Typical route for a parent | Flight evidence asked | Age-related point |
|---|---|---|---|
| Schengen (Germany example) | Short-stay visa, tourism or family visit | Flight reservation[1] | Pension or sponsor evidence; €30,000 insurance |
| United Kingdom | Standard visitor | Bookings described as less useful[3] | Ties and funds carry the file |
| United States | B-2 visitor | Do not buy tickets before the visa[2] | Over-79s now generally interviewed[4] |
| Canada | Visitor visa or Super Visa | Not listed as required | Super Visa: $100,000 insurance, medical exam[6] |

How should you choose the dates for an older traveller?
Pick dates the person can comfortably travel on, then make everything else agree. With a working applicant, dates come from leave approval. With a retired parent, they usually come from the family event, the season and medical routine. Here is the order we'd suggest:
- Agree the trip length with the host. Shorter and clearly purposeful reads better than open-ended.
- Check medical commitments: regular check-ups, prescriptions that must be refilled, any procedures.
- Choose flight times with care. A direct flight that lands in daylight is easier than a cheap overnight connection.
- Buy insurance that covers every day of the reservation, with a margin.
- Ask the host to write the same dates in the invitation or sponsor letter.
- Order the reservation a few days before the appointment and check it on the airline's site.
Dates drift easily in a parent's file, because three or four family members often prepare different documents. Our guide on insurance and itinerary dates shows how to line them up.
Can you request wheelchair help on a reservation?
Request it on the real ticket, after the visa. A visa reservation is a temporary hold for your application; special assistance belongs on the booking your parent will actually fly. Emirates, for example, asks passengers to tell it at the time of booking or at least 48 hours before the flight, and accepts requests through Manage a booking. It also says it can arrange a wheelchair at every airport and help from the terminal entrance to the aircraft.[8]
Some medical conditions need clearance before flying. Many airlines, Emirates included, publish a medical information form (MEDIF) for that purpose.[9] If your parent uses oxygen, has had recent surgery or has a serious heart or lung condition, ask the airline before buying the ticket, not at the check-in desk.
A small kindness: when you buy the real ticket, choose an aisle seat near the front and note any assistance in the booking straight away. It costs little and makes a long journey far easier.
What if a carer or relative travels with your parent?
Then put everyone on one reservation and make each person's file stand on its own. A companion, whether a sibling, a hired carer or a grown-up grandchild, needs their own visa and their own documents; the embassy does not treat them as an add-on to the parent's application. What links the files is the shared itinerary. When both names appear on the same reservation, on the same flights, the officer can see straight away that the parent will not be travelling alone.
A few details make this smoother. The sponsor or invitation letter should name every traveller and the purpose of each person's trip. If the companion is going specifically to help the parent, say so plainly in the cover letter. Insurance must cover each traveller separately. And if the companion is employed, their leave letter should give the same dates as the reservation.
Take a simple case. A widowed father of 74 is visiting his son in Frankfurt for three weeks, and his daughter flies with him for the first ten days. Two reservations would be needed here, or one with a separate return for the daughter, because their return dates differ. Each application then shows its own exit date, and nothing in either file contradicts the other.
What mistakes trip up senior applicants?
- Names that differ from the passport, especially initials expanded on one document but not another. See name format on reservations.
- A sponsor letter with different dates from the reservation.
- Insurance that ends before the return flight, or that excludes the traveller's age band.
- Unexplained large deposits in the parent's account shortly before applying.
- Very long stays without a clear reason on a short-stay visa.
- Buying non-refundable fares before the decision, then losing them when a date moves.
A refused application is not the end. Our guide on applying again after a refusal explains how to respond to the reasons given.
How do you order a reservation for your parents?
You can do it on their behalf from anywhere. Enter the route and dates on the booking page, add each traveller with their name exactly as in the passport, then settle the bill through Razorpay with UPI, a card or netbanking. Within roughly 10 minutes the PDF should land by email; follow it at order tracking.
Every traveller is charged once per booking, single or return, so two parents on one booking cost ₹1,398 or $18. Full details are on the price page. It holds for up to two weeks, though the airline sets the exact expiry; if the appointment is several weeks off, wait and book it a few days before. Your parents' PNR and surname will pull the booking up on the airline's website, and our guide on verifying before submission walks through it. For how a reservation differs from a ticket, see flight reservation for visa.
Book your parents' visa reservation
Live PNR, names exactly as entered. ₹699 / $9 per passenger.
Please note: this is a held booking rather than a bought fare, and no one can fly on it. It should match the trip your parents really plan. The embassy decides every application; no document guarantees a visa.
Frequently asked questions
Is there an upper age limit for a visitor visa?
None of the official pages we checked for Schengen, the UK, the US or Canada set an upper age limit for visitors. What changes with age is the evidence: pension instead of payslips, often a sponsor, and insurance suited to an older traveller. Finding suitable insurance can take time, so start that search early.
My parents are retired. What replaces the employer letter?
For Germany's Schengen checklist in India, pension statements for three months or proof of regular income from property or business, plus stamped bank statements. If you are paying, add a sponsor letter, your passport copy, your stamped bank statements and proof of relationship such as a birth certificate.
Do my parents need to attend a US visa interview at 80?
Generally yes. Since 1 October 2025 the State Department expects in-person interviews from nearly all nonimmigrant applicants, including those over 79. Limited exceptions exist, such as certain renewals within 12 months of the previous visa's expiry. Check the current rules on travel.state.gov before booking an appointment.
Should my parents apply for a Canadian Super Visa or a visitor visa?
For visits of six months or less, IRCC points to the visitor visa. For longer stays, the Super Visa allows up to five years at a time but needs a qualifying host, a minimum income, an immigration medical exam and at least $100,000 of private health insurance for a year.
Can I add wheelchair assistance to the reservation?
Add it to the real ticket instead. The visa reservation is only a temporary hold. Once the visa is granted and you buy the ticket, request assistance at booking or through Manage booking. Emirates, for example, asks for at least 48 hours' notice.
How is the price worked out for a couple?
Per passenger. Each parent named on the reservation counts as one passenger, so a couple pays twice the single price: ₹1,398 in India or $18 elsewhere, one way or round trip. Both names go on one reservation, which keeps the dates identical for the two applications.
