The Dominican Republic has one of the clearest flight rules we have seen on any foreign ministry page. Its tourist visa list asks for a "Copia legible de reserva de vuelo (IDA Y VUELTA) actualizada a la fecha de su viaje": a legible copy of a round-trip flight reservation, updated to your travel date. The word used is reserva, reservation. Then the rules tighten at the airport, where airlines must make sure foreign passengers hold a round-trip air ticket. Below we set out who needs the visa, what the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MIREX) asks for, and where a reservation stops being the right document.
Dominican Republic visa: key facts for 2026

Who needs a Dominican Republic visa?
Indian passport holders need a tourist visa unless they fall under one important exemption. MIREX explains that holders of valid permanent residence, or of valid multiple-entry visas, from the United States, the European Union (Schengen), Canada or Great Britain can enter for tourism with just their passport and the tourist card.[1] The Ministry of Tourism's entry page puts it more simply: any person, whatever their nationality, can visit if they are a legal resident of, or hold a valid visa from, one of those four.[2]
Read the MIREX wording carefully, because it is narrower than the tourism summary. It says multiple-entry visas. If your Schengen visa is single entry, or your UK visa has expired, don't assume the exemption covers you. When in doubt, ask the embassy before you book anything non-refundable.
Nationals of countries with a bilateral visa waiver agreement also enter with a passport and tourist card.[1] Carrying a different passport? Check your country on the Ministry of Tourism's visa list linked from its entry page.[2]
Where Indians apply
MIREX says applications are made in person or by email at Dominican embassies and consulates, and that an interview may be required.[1] In India, the Embassy of the Dominican Republic is in Vasant Vihar, New Delhi, and publishes its contact details on its own website.[3] If you live in the Gulf or elsewhere, apply at the Dominican mission that covers your country of residence and include your residence card, which the MIREX list asks for where it applies.[1]
Fees: MIREX's requirements page points to the consular fee schedule rather than listing amounts.[1] We couldn't confirm a current rupee or dollar figure on an official page, so ask the embassy when you book your slot.
The official document list, in plain English
This is the MIREX tourist visa list, translated and grouped.[1] Keep the Spanish originals in mind if your embassy hands you a printed copy.
- Visa application form ("Formulario de Visa").
- One 2 × 2 inch photo, front-facing on a white background.
- Original passport valid for at least six months.
- Copy of your residence card, if you live outside your country of nationality, with valid status.
- Parental or guardian authorisation for a minor.
- Proof of economic means: employment certificate and a bank certificate showing three months of movements.
- A round-trip flight reservation, legible and updated to your travel date.
- A hotel reservation or an invitation letter; invitations come with a notarised guarantee letter from a Dominican guarantor.
Two of those items deserve a closer look. "Updated to your travel date" means the reservation should be current and show the dates you actually plan to fly. A booking made months ago for different dates won't do. And the guarantee letter for invited visitors must contain specific clause wording, so get the template from the embassy rather than drafting your own.
Reservation for the visa, ticket for the flight
The Dominican rules split neatly into two moments, and mixing them up causes most of the confusion.
| Moment | What the official source says | What to hold |
|---|---|---|
| Visa application at the embassy | "reserva de vuelo (IDA Y VUELTA) actualizada a la fecha de su viaje"[1] | A current round-trip flight reservation in your name. |
| Check-in for your flight | Airlines must ensure foreign passengers "have an air ticket to and from the Dominican Republic (roundtrip)"[2] | A paid round-trip ticket, or a paid onward ticket your airline accepts under that rule. |
| Arrival | Ministry of Tourism lists an "Air, maritime or land ticket of entrance and return"[2] | The same paid ticket, plus the QR code from the online form. |
Put plainly: the reservation belongs in the visa file, and only there. With the visa stamped, purchase the round trip for real. If you are visa-exempt because of a US or Schengen visa, you skip the first row entirely, and a held reservation has no real job for the Dominican trip itself.
Our advice: keep your money in your pocket until the embassy says yes. MIREX asks for a reservation, so give it one. Then buy the ticket after approval, before you go anywhere near the airport.
The online entry and exit form
Every passenger flying commercially into or out of the Dominican Republic must fill in a free electronic entry and exit form, which the government calls "E-TICKET", at eticket.migracion.gob.do.[2] Despite the name, it is an immigration and customs form, not an airline document, and it is unrelated to the held booking you gave the embassy.
According to the Ministry of Tourism, the 72-hour deadline has been dropped: you can complete it whenever your flight details are known, as long as you finish before reaching the airline counter. A family of up to seven can use one form and one account, producing one QR code. You can print the confirmation codes or keep a screenshot.[2] Because the form asks for your actual flight, fill it in after you have bought the ticket.
Two other small details from the same page: the US$20 departure tax is already included in the airline fare, and passengers on private flights, ferries or cruise ships use physical customs forms instead.[2]
Routes from India and transit permissions
Plan for a change of plane between India and Santo Domingo or Punta Cana, and check schedules carefully. Which connection you choose affects your paperwork as much as the Dominican visa does.
| Connection | Point to check |
|---|---|
| United States | Check US transit rules on travel.state.gov. A valid multiple-entry US visa also exempts you from the Dominican visa.[1] |
| Canada | IRCC says visa-required nationals need a transit visa when their flight stops in Canada on the way to another country.[5] |
| United Kingdom | GOV.UK sets out when a Direct Airside Transit visa is needed to change flights.[4] |
| Europe (e.g. Madrid, Paris, Amsterdam) | Check the airport transit rules on the relevant Schengen consulate's site for your nationality. |
Here is a worked example. Say you live in Pune, have no US, UK, Canadian or Schengen visa, and want ten days in Punta Cana. You need a Dominican tourist visa from the embassy in New Delhi. Your reservation must route through a hub you are allowed to transit. A route through a European airport may need an airport transit visa for your nationality, depending on the country. Settle that first, then book the reservation on the route you will really fly.
We cover connections in more depth in onward ticket rules for transit and layovers.
What your reservation should show

- Both directions. MIREX writes "IDA Y VUELTA" in capitals. A one-way booking doesn't meet that line.
- Dates you will actually travel, matching the hotel reservation and the dates on your form.
- A stay within the visa you are asking for, which is 60 days for both tourist visa types.[1]
- Every traveller by name, spelt exactly as in their passports.
- A genuine PNR that the consular officer could pull up on the carrier's own site.
Open the PNR yourself before your embassy appointment; our PNR verification walkthrough shows which boxes to fill on the airline site.
Timing the reservation against 10 to 20 working days
The processing window matters here, because MIREX wants the reservation updated to your travel date and a held booking is short-lived.
Employment certificate, three months of bank movements, accommodation or invitation.
A hold survives for 2 weeks at most; its precise expiry is the carrier's decision.
MIREX gives 10 to 20 working days for a decision.
Then complete the online entry and exit form with the real flight.
If the embassy asks for an updated reservation while your file is open, order a fresh one with the same dates. Never alter an older PDF. That's the honest route, and it is also cheaper than it sounds.
Common mistakes in Dominican files
- Assuming any US or Schengen visa exempts you. MIREX refers to multiple-entry visas and valid residence.
- A one-way reservation. The list says round trip.
- Stale dates. The reservation should be current, matching the trip you plan.
- Using the reservation at check-in. Airlines must confirm a round-trip air ticket for foreign passengers.[2]
- Forgetting the online form until the airport. It must be done before the airline counter.
- Describing the reservation as a ticket in a cover letter. Call it a flight reservation.
A verifiable reservation, and what it costs
Our round-trip and multi-city holds sit under a live PNR in your name, on dates you choose, and the carrier's website will show them. Since no fare is paid, the booking carries no right to board.
One traveller, one fee, whether you need a single leg or both directions; multi-city routes add a fee per pair of legs. Expect the PDF roughly 10 minutes after paying through Razorpay (UPI, cards, netbanking), with status updates on the tracking page. Currency-by-currency rates are on the price page; for the mechanics of a held booking, see flight reservation for visa. Need the accommodation side too? See hotel booking for visa.
Round-trip reservation for your Dominican visa
Both directions on one PNR, ready for MIREX's list. ₹699 / $9 each.
To be clear: the embassy decides your visa and immigration decides your entry. A reservation is evidence of a travel plan. It isn't a ticket and can't promise an outcome.
Dominican Republic visa FAQ
Does the Dominican Republic accept a flight reservation for a tourist visa?
The MIREX requirements list asks for a legible copy of a round-trip flight reservation, updated to your travel date. A genuine reservation in your name, showing both directions on your planned dates, matches that wording. The embassy still decides the application, and may ask for more documents or an interview.
Can Indians with a US visa visit without a Dominican visa?
MIREX says holders of valid permanent residence or valid multiple-entry visas from the United States, the Schengen area, Canada or Great Britain can enter for tourism with a passport and tourist card. If your visa is single entry or expired, check with the embassy before travelling, because the wording refers to multiple-entry visas.
Will the airline accept my reservation at check-in?
You shouldn't count on it. The Ministry of Tourism says that since 28 April 2023 airlines must ensure foreign passengers have a round-trip air ticket to and from the Dominican Republic. A held reservation is not a ticket. Buy your real return before flying.
Is the government's E-TICKET the same as my flight ticket?
No. It is a free online entry and exit form run by the immigration authority, which every commercial passenger completes before reaching the airline counter. It asks for your actual flight, so fill it in once your ticket is bought. It is separate from the reservation you submit with a visa application.
How long does a Dominican tourist visa take?
MIREX gives 10 to 20 working days. Order your reservation shortly before you submit, because holds last no more than about 2 weeks and the carrier chooses the exact expiry. If the file runs longer and the embassy asks for an update, order a fresh reservation with the same dates.
How long can I stay on a Dominican tourist visa?
MIREX lists two tourism visas: simple tourism for 60 days with one entry, and multiple tourism for 60 days with two entries. The Ministry of Tourism describes a standard 30-day stay for visa-free visitors, with fees for longer stays. Plan your reservation dates to sit inside whichever limit applies to you.
Do I need a hotel booking as well?
Yes. MIREX asks for a hotel reservation or an invitation letter, and invited visitors also need a notarised guarantee letter from a Dominican guarantor with specific wording. Make sure the hotel dates line up with the flight reservation, because officers compare the two.
