What Malta's own checklist says about flights
- The High Commission of Malta in India tourism checklist, used at VFS, lists "Flight reservations of return or round ticket", plus proof of intra-Schengen flights, train or car hire if you visit several Schengen states. If you also need a hotel booking for the accommodation line of the checklist, that is charged per stay and per traveller rather than per night. How long the seats are held depends on the airline, and you see that hold window on screen before paying.
Reservation versus a refundable fare: the honest maths
Some applicants ask whether it is safer to buy a fully refundable ticket instead. It can be, if your dates are fixed and you are happy to tie up the money. We will not quote fares here because they move daily, but the trade-offs are predictable:

Malta's checklist uses the word "reservations", so a held booking answers that line. The real saving is cash flow: a family does not have to park several full fares with an airline while the High Commission considers the file.
Worked example: a family of three from Bengaluru
Anita, Rohan and their nine-year-old plan a ten-day holiday in Malta, leaving Kempegowda International (BLR) on 14 November and flying home from Malta International (MLA) on 24 November. They book their VFS appointment for 21 October, which leaves more than the 15 clear days the checklist asks for.
- Flight reservation: 3 × ₹699 = ₹2,097 for the round trip, ordered on 19 October so the itinerary is fresh at submission.
- Visa fees: two adults at €90 and one child at €45, so €225 before any VFS service charge.
- Insurance: one policy per person, each covering 14–24 November and at least €30,000.
- Cover letter: it names all three travellers and repeats the flight dates and the PNR shown on the reservation.
Had they bought refundable fares instead, the whole ticket cost would have been paid in October and reclaimed only if something went wrong. With the reservation, they purchase real seats after the passports come back with visas.
Malta reservation price: questions
Is the ₹699 price per family or per person?
Per person. Every traveller named on the Malta application needs their own name on the reservation, so a family of four pays four times the per-passenger fee.
Does a return reservation cost more than one way?
No. One way and round trip are charged at the same flat rate, and the High Commission checklist asks for a return or round-trip reservation.
Why not just buy a refundable ticket for Malta?
You can, but you pay the full fare up front and any refund follows the fare rules, which may include fees and a wait. A reservation keeps that money free until the visa decision.
Is the visa fee included in your price?
